Great but...

Comments about Oben CT-2391 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

My first impressions with this tripods were great. It is super light, easy to set up and seemed sturdy enough.
But after using it daily for a few weeks one major shortcoming prompted me to return it.
I need my tripods to have a center column to quickly change my setup from room to room. On this tripod the anti rotation groove in the center column is so wide that I would have to constantly reset y shot once fully extended, the whole column and tripod head would be rotated a good 25 degrees from the initial setup to the extended one. Unacceptable to me.

I have since purchased a Really Right Stuff TVC-33 Versa with the center column option and I am completely satisfied with it. It comes at twice the price tag of the CT-2391 but the built quality and finish and functionality is way above it.

I've used the tripod for wildlife and macro photography. With a D810 and Nikon 80-400mm lens, I've experienced great stability.

Comments about Oben CT-2391 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought this tripod from B&H to be used in architectural photography. So far I have taken it through three jobs and it has behaved spectacularly.I first put it through a DIY stability test. I taped a laser pointer on the hotshoe cover and pointed it to a wall about 20 ft away. I leveled the camera and took several series of long exposures (1/2 sec up to 15 seconds). First with mirror lockup and a remote trigger, then without either thing. In all the photos the red dot of the laser pointer was on the same position. Thumbs up!If you are used to four section tripods or else you have always owned shorter ones, the bulk of this one may surprise you. It is not small in size, yet it is fairly light to carry around. I shoot architecture and interiors, so I don't have to lug it around too much. If you are looking into this tripod for hiking, etc... you may be better suited with the 4 section version, the CT-249, since it packs smaller. The leg locks seem sturdy, and the aluminum spider where the legs are mounted is well machined. It also includes a small metal hoop to hang accessories (I use it to hang a CamRanger). The center column can be removed, which is nice if you are weight conscious or else don't use it. With my tripod and head combination the camera sits above my eye level; I am 6'1" and I can't look into the view finder while tip toeing, yet I leave the column on in case I need to put the camera higher up. I just bring a small step-stool along to focus and level the camera ;).The tripod comes also with a set of spikes to replace the rubber feet in case you shoot outside, a set of tools and a carrying case. Overall, it is a steady carbon fiber tripod for under $[*], with lots of goodies included. If you want a tall tripod that is also light and steady, then this is the one for you. Just keep in mind the bulk size (28 inches folded) before you commit to it.

Comments about Oben CT-2391 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I agonized over desiding on a field tripod. The combination of light weight, length and cost led me to the CT 2391. I don't mind the flip open holders on some tripod legs, but like the twist open process better on this CT 2391. The twist legs provide for a smoother surface for carrying or storing. Additionally I desided to give up some overall folded length for a 3 vs. 4 section leg. Four secton legs require 3 times 3 flip operations to open. The three legs with two screw operations on each leg are tolerable.

This tripod is sturdy, I use it with a D800 and tele lenses. I wouldn't want any lighter gear for this application. The carbln fiber is a "no brainer" like cruse control in a car once you have it you will never do without.
