This is the best DX format walk-around zoom lens I have used. I have owned it now for 5 months and I have taken over 3000 photos with it. It is a keeper in my book, though at first I was compelled to search for a zoom with range after noticing some images from the D7100 were soft. Some images can be reasonably sharp, too. Better mastery of the camera will produce better results. I will be trying the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM soon, but I still need a zoom with reach. So far, this is the best option I am finding in the DX format.

There is noticeable distortion at 18mm, which should be no surprise. Below are some images. Below is the same photo taken at 18mm. The first image shows the distortion and the second image shows lens corrections (and other adjustments) using Lightroom 5.

Lightroom 5 overcomes the limitations of the lens I have discovered so far.

The image stabilization works as advertised and has saved some images in low-light.

I'm reading very good reviews about this lens and am wondering if I got a bad copy, but found it soft from around 18-50 and from mid 200's to 300. It's also quite heavy and a little slow. Best to use outdoors or in a sunny place if you're not using a speedlight. Consider the weight of this lens vs. the 18-200 VRII if you're planning on carrying it around all day on a trip. I was hoping this would be my "fun lens," but that's not the case. It's the first lens I've ever returned. For now I'll stick with my 18-200, 70-200 and primes.

Very Good All-around Lens

By Mike in Ohio

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I haven't had this lens long, so my impression is an initial one. I purchased this lens to use as a walk-around/travel lens on my D7200 body. I now use the newer 80-400mm zoom on my recently purchased D500 for more serious hand-held and tripod supported wildlife photography. But my first impression of this 18-300mm lens is very favorable. This lens seems to be as good, if not better than the previous 18-200mm lens, which, while also not a pro-quality optic, was nonetheless quite good. I got good results with that lens on a D200, so I expect this 18-300mm/D7200 combo to be even better. It is a solidly built lens, and balances nicely on the D7200, and I do not find it overly heavy (especially after using the 80-400mm lens). So, I would recommend this lens. I gave it 5 stars, because I did not want to penalize it for not being a "pro" lens. I don't expect it to be as good as my better lenses, but I do expect it to produce sharp and richly colored images across the full range. I think it will do that to my satisfaction. I have attached a couple of photos, that have been processed in Lightroom, to support that expectation.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I was juggling two different lenses to take my pictures. I can't tell you the number of pictures I missed because I had the wrong lens on my camera. This lens solves all my problems. It takes great pictures and is very easy to use. It does have some weight to it so be prepared for that but it is well worth it to me.

Excellent travel lens for the photo enthusiast

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Bought this lens hoping it would be a solution to the problem of inevitably not having the "right" lens on the camera at a given time while on vacation and missing some great shots as a result. Is this lens the answer? For me, yes, it is. This lens produces very high-quality photos for just about the whole focal range. I have not experienced any issue with "lens creep" that can sometimes rear its ugly head with zoom lenses. I have it paired with my D7000 and it's all I really need for any travel that I do. Makes packing for vacations much easier.

This lens is built like a tank. It is on the heavy side but I remember dropping it and noticing that it didn't have a scratch. The lens works wide open but when you zoom and use manual focus the pictures will not disappoint.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I read many reviews before purchasing this lens and I had some reservations about clarity and overall IQ, but I'm not disappointed at all. This is a fantastic all-around lens and the IQ is wonderful for the price and the versatility. This is not a professional lens and is not marketed, priced, or intended to be such. For the majority of us hobbyists out there, this is a must have, particularly if you're into general nature photography. I have had equal success with wildlife, sunrises and sunsets, and forest flora shots. It is fantastic to carry only one lens and be able to artistically capture so many different photographs. It is heavy, but that's to be expected for the almost unbelievable focal length span. The smaller apertures are what one should expect from a lens of this price range. The auto-focus is fast and accurate and I love the M-M/A function which allows for fine tuning focusing. The VR functions very well and the zoom and focus rings are solid and conveniently located. The mount is metal and has some weather sealing which is a plus. The front of the lens does not rotate during focusing which permits the use of CP filters. The lens is very well built and is a good balance between solid construction and light weight. I have used this lens for some time now and have nothing negative to say. The negative ratings I have read seem to be asking for a professional f/1.4 superzoom that weighs 1/2 pound and costs $. Get real. For the smart buyer who has realistic expectations, this is a fantastic buy. I highly recommend!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I am enthusiast photographer and this is my second all-in one lens. I'm impressed by the results. I bought the 18-300 VR (B&H) to replace my Nikon 18-200 VR (great also) looking for the additional 100mm at zoom. My body is a Nikon D7200 and I have to say that this lens works better than I expected. The construction with second generation of VR, the 9 rounded diaphragm blades, the three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements and the three aspherical lens elements, makes of this lens an ideal allied for a great range for shoots between wide angle and super telephoto getting amazing pictures. Don't worry about carry many lens. With this 18-300VR you will take all kind of pictures sitting on a chair!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I bought this lens to replace my Nikon 18-200 VR that had begun to get quite a few miles on it. My body is a Nikon D5200. I shoot high school football as well as landscapes. I haven't had a chance to use it for the later much yet, but for football, it's been a great lens. Before this, I had been using a Tamron 70-300, but was limited when the action got too close to the sidelines. This lens lets me shoot wider for those times I need to. It auto focuses quicker than the Tamron and is also sharper. It's a bit on the heavy side, but I got used to that pretty quick. I'm going to be shooting high school hockey soon from the bench, so it'll be interesting to see how high up I'll have to increase the ISO. I can see this being my go-to lens for quite a while.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Ok, I'm impressed. Some wonderful features on this lens and totally worth the $ price tag. I'm loving the sharpness and clearity of this lens. Even at 1600 ISO on a D7200 with out additional lighting and slow shutter speeds on my tripod I see amazing clearity with almost little noise reduction in LightRoom 6. Build is best in class of all super zooms to match price. Never heard any one mention this but second barrel looks and feels like alloy. I feel it colder then the rest of the exterior body. Only very limited play of most other barrel. I have never seen glass so good in this price range and I was a advit Canon user for years. Only certian primes. Love the focus to out of focus blur. So evenly exicuted! The bokeh dose have some onlon going on, but a small amount. focus ring feels lovely but less dampend, with good amount of throw for video work. Zoom ring feels a bit rough, could be because of ultra long zoom range. Expect to break in as time goes by. This is the most underated lens I have tried and tested. Nikon hit a home run here with my d7200. This lens and 17-50 f/2.8 ex dc os lens. Colors are perfect. Contrast is lovely. I have tested over thirty lenses in the past 6 years. Half of them Canon "L" glass. And this guy holds up to "L" glass with all its features at this price range all day long. If you shoot with a Nikon newer 24 mega pixel sensor and want the best all around walk around lens. This is the best the world.....period! AF is fast when in range when out of range takes a bit of time to focus but is totally accurate all the time every time. A excellent trade off. I still have so much more to test, like flare, chromatic aberation, compression factor, clearity and contrast outdoors. But honestly I'm impressed. Full time manual overide is nice, VR of stabilization is great so far, just waiting to test norm/active features. The zoom lens lock is a nice touch and this lens dose have a weather seal at metal rear lens mount. Leading me to suggest possible other sealing. All lenses have some weaknesses , but I know there's not another better suited super zoom for Nikon crop sensor users. After just some enitial testing I would not even consider using another manufacture like Tamron or Sigma super zooms. They just don't match up except possibly on paper. Test this lens for your self, you will not return it, hehehee.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I hope not to make this long winded, but wow! First Build in best in class of all super zooms. Second this lens was produced ahead of its time. I mean, it matches my D7200 sensor perfectly for IQ, Sharpness, contrast, and resolution! Third only on a few test shots taken into LightRoom 6 shows its perfect studio IQ at 100 ISO and lovely performance outdoors at 800 ISO, with little noise reduction in LR6. Forth the lens profile is in LR6, meaning no worries about distortion!! This lens is worh every penny if matched to a newest Nikon body. Like D7200, D5500, D800 series with crop mode of course. This is a DX crop sensor lens and on a Full Frame will auto to crop mode when mounted. Color redition is perfect, but my white balance can be off at times like most systems. Fifth AF or auto-focus is not slow. We are talking about a Super Zoom. Once in range its fast Out of range it focuses more then fast enough. Six of all the AF is totally accurate!! Seventh, getting more accurate shots is more important then any chart! At 2000 ISO, grain is visible and we lose resolution. Eigth This lens matches Canons 70-300L and surpasses it at 18mm for IQ, just not waterproofing. I was a Canon user for years. Just switched up because of price, convenience, IQ and so much more. Nighth, for crop sensors the Nikon D7200 is the best....Period!
Unless you need video and more shots taken, then looking at Canon might work for you, keeping it real. Tenth, I know pro glass, and this is not best in build nor in price, but best in IQ plus build at this price range by any manufacture. So much more to write and see, especially with CA or chromatic aberration. Flares, Bokeh. Surprised at at others rated this lens poorly. Positive They tested on lower IQ sensors.

Its better than the 18-200VR and 70-300VR combined.

If you are looking for a high-quality walk-around lens, prepare to be pleasantly rewarded for your search. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm by Nikon is an excellent lens that produces quality, sharp images throughout the focal spectrum. I understand the common argument that no superzoom can do it all, that it will have weaknesses throughout the focal spectrum. But doesn't every zoom or tele lens fall victim to that same principle when scrutinized closely. If you are a true, full-time pro, who is commonly having images blown up to billboard size, then yeah, maybe you will see some differences between that and your uber expensive fixed focal length lens. But for the rest of us, making money off 'normal size prints' in the artwork category, and occasional book covers, etc. you would be real challenged to discover the 'issues' the 'experts' note about superzooms. One final note, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm is not your daddy's superzoom. The advancements in technology make this lens way better than anything you have seen in the past. It is an amazing lens that will come through for you in ways you couldn't have dreamed in years gone by. But don't take my word for it, head on down to the amazing B&H superstore and discover a Nikon superzoom for yourself - you will be very happy with your choice to do so!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Excellent lens. I'm a novice, but this lens takes great photos. Zoom strength is fantastic. No switching lenses for close up or far away photos. Great speed also even in pretty dark situations.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

This is a sturdy, extremely well made lens. When paired with my Nikon D3300 it is capable of producing tac sharp panoramas and macros, as well as a 300mm zoom of our old home on a ridge over 10 miles away. When blown up in post, this long lens capture showed readily identifiable features of the home.......amazing! You can do anything well with this lens.
