I purchased the first version of this lens from B&H in January. While it was still under the return period the version ii was announced.I returned the original and waited "patiently" for the ii.It took a while but when it was finally announced I think that I was probably one of the first to place an order.I did order it early in the morning on the announced sale day. There was absolutely nothing that I could find wrong with the original but the addition of a motor will come in handy for my back-up D40.I usually take my pictures at night and this lens performs beyond my expectations I'll attach a couple of pics that I have taken with this lens. Bear in mind that I am an amature photographer so the image quality would probably be better in more capable hands

I purchased the newer Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 because I was looking for an DX alternative to my Nikkor AF-S 14-24 mm f/2.8 for such occasions where I want to travel lighter or need to attach a filter. It is possible that I expected too much because of the mostly positive reviews I read, and/or that I was too critical in my evaluation of this lens because it is not a Nikon product. Either way, after two exchanges I am still not entirely happy with my third sample but I decided to keep it because it works well for me for landscape and travel photography, which is what I use it for. Also, I know what I've got but don't know what I'll get if I exchange it a third time because every new sample I have had was different from the previous one except for the fact that they all were sharpest at f/5.6-f/9.0 at any focal length.

The first sample was what I would describe as the most "balanced" of the three in terms of resolution. Center sharpness was usable at f/2.8. Border sharpness was not as good as center sharpness at all focal lengths, and very disappointing at 11 mm, especially at f/2.8. The resolution was generally best at f/4 - f/8, particularly at 16 mm. The second sample lacked center sharpness at all apertures and focal lengths, which led me to believe there may have been a focusing problem. My third sample is not usable wide open at any focal length. However, resolution increases remarkably at 4.0, and from f/5.6 - f/11 the lens displays very good to excellent sharpness across the frame at all focal lengths. I am also very pleased with the color rendition.

Even though I am quite satisfied with my lens when I use it in the f/5.6 to f/11 aperture range, I can only give it a 3-star rating because of its underperformance at f/2.8 and - for this product in general - the sample variations.

Excellent lens. She has a very good and with the opening 2.8 sharpness is very easy to take pictures in darker locations.
Great for taking photos of landscapes and arquietetura. I do not regret the purchase.

Great Wide

By Mike

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

This is a great wide lens for the price. Definitely undervalued. They just released the new updated cine version of this lens, but is close to $2k. This is a good alternative. Sharp with minimal distortion. I was looking for the right wide angle for my GH4, and I use this with the Nikon Speedbooster. Gives me exactly what I'm looking for.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

I am very happy with this lens. I purchased it mainly for night sky shots and it does that well with my Nikon D7100.

Auto focus can be a bit loud and slow but for my needs as primarily a landscape photographer, that is not a huge deal for me.

I use this Len for shooting 360 degree interiors and Landscapes. I currently use a Nikon D7000 camera and the images are very sharp. Great Len, good price, I haven't used the Nikon wide angle (I think its the 14-24)but I can't believe it would be that much better then the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. This is the Len to get if you use a DX camera body and have a tight budget.

Been using this lens for the last week on my old D70. After reading many reviews I felt this was the lens to use now and upgrade to the D7100 later. It is a large lens and takes some time to to get adjust to - with the expanded viewing range. This lens recently used capturing live small venue concerts, architecture and nature shots. It will make a big difference photographing interiors for real-estate agents.

I use this particular lens for buildings and architecture. However, I will say that I was extremely impressed with this lens and shooting people.

It is the perfect lens for anyone looking for a wide angle but with the capability to get close to the subject that your shooting as well.

The only "negative" in my opinion would be the zoom ability. It isn't the greatest however, if you're looking for a wide angle lens, most of them won't have a zoom at all, so technically, you still get the best of both worlds which is nice.

The focus selections method is different comparing to Nikon but is not better or worst. It is just different and it does the job well.

I have been using it for interior photos where my 18-140 does not go quite wide enough. Also great for special effects shots where the DOF is great. You do have to be very careful to shoot with the distortion in mind so it can be corrected.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount:

As a cheaper alternative to the hugely expensive Nikon, this lens is awesome. Especially for city photography, and low to mid light situations. The auto focus mechanism does sound a little rough, but considering it focuses to 'infinite' for anything further away than about 15feet (which is most things you would point this lens at), its not an issue. This is by far my favourite lens in my kit, and I would buy another without hesitation.
