I have been using this lens with the X-E1 (purchased as the kit) for the last month and have taken several hundred shots. All together I feel confident in saying this is a fantastic zoom, with a very useful range (27-82.5mm in 35mm equivalent).

The lens is quite bright for a "kit" lens (though it isn't really a kit lens, not in the traditional sense - the image quality is much higher than that), and I've found that even wide open the lens produces very high quality images - sharp, contrasty, and full of that Fuji color and rendering that I love so much (and which compelled me to get the X-E1 in the first place). The Optical Image Stablization (OIS) on the lens works very well - although I need to note that I can hear the OIS working, at least when the X-E1 is set to have OIS on continuously (rather than just when shooting). The noise is minor, but there, and in a perfectly silent environment could be noticeable. But you can disable it with a switch on the lens itself.

Compared directly with the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 (which I also bought): The 18-55mm is longer and heavier, and does extend when zooming (though not when focusing). The 35mm f/1.4 is sharper from f/2.8 and up, and capable of thinner depth of focus (thanks to the faster aperture), so you can throw more of the background out of focus. But on looking over many shots from a recent trip, I can't easily pick out which I took with the 18-55mm and which I took with the 35mm (except when it was very dark out, at which point I switched to the faster 35mm, despite the lack of OIS). I think this speaks to the quality of the 18-55mm - the image quality it produces is comparable to a very well regarded prime. At 18mm it is especially good; it is only at the max 55mm length that you probably will want to stop down to achieve max sharpness.

All I all I highly recommend this zoom if you are in the market for a versatile lens to add to your X-mount collection. As part of the X-E1 kit this is a no-brainer - get it. On it's own, for the X-Pro 1 or if you got the X-E1 body-only, I still see this as a flexible lens for all those times when you don't have the time or ability to switch out your primes - or if you just want to buy one lens that does most everything in the standard range. Match this with the 35mm f/1.4 and you have a heck of a set.

Bought this zoom with the camera. I'm not impressed by the build, but I wasn't expecting much more for $ or so. It feels a little bit flimsy. The flimsiness wouldn't have bothered me though, considering the price. However, I've got quite disappointed when I took some low ligt pictures on 55mm focal with the diaphragm completely open and the vignetting was just horrendous. I haven't seen such a thing even in old Soviet zoom lenses that came on their Zenit cameras... The first reaction was to check the settings to make sure I didn't activate by mistake some in camera "toy camera" effect... Afterall, what's the use of having a "fast" lens if the performance at open apertures is poor?!

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

First off, I am not a pro photographer and have only used pro equipment a few times. That said;I was buying the Fuji X-M1 camera and decided to buy it with this lens instead of the stock kit lens. This was an excellent choice, and I could possibly get away with never buying a second lens for this camera. The pictures the pair take are excellent. I have not yet had a chance to test with a tripod, but hand-held images are almost always sharp. The low light image stabilization is such that with a careful stance, photos are possible by street lamp. I can get away with 1/20 and 1/17 as long as the subject isn't moving. The size is a nice compromise between the low quality of a compact camera and the overwhelming size and weight of a quality 35mm lens.Several reviews mention slow focusing. Out of the box this is true. After a firmware update (yes, the lens has a firmware), it focuses in under a quarter second. I hear that is not pro grade, but it is much better than I am used to.The bokeh is not as strong as a 35mm lens with the same specs. This is one of the trades for a smaller/lighter camera, sensor, and lens. One limit, there is an odd point between about 1 foot and 2 feet where the lens is between macro and standard mode and cannot focus.Of course, 55mm (~75mm equiv) is not a strong zoom, so a second lens will be needed for telephoto work.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

This lens is a great value when bought as a kit with the E1. It is high quality optically and mechanically and produces great images. The auto focus is fast, and the manual controls are good. Be sure to upgrade the camera and lens firmware as it is out-of-date as shipped. The lens hood is inevitably big, but light weight and offers good protection. The only downside to this lens is that it is big and heavy, making an E1 body look impressive at a distance; for stealth, a small lens like the 27mm would have advantages.

I would prefer a marked aperture ring like on some other Fuji lenses. This one is just an encoder ring, and the aperture must be viewed inside the camera.

Similarly, I would have preferred the Fuji X line to have used marked focusing rings on the lenses (with an "A" position), rather than to have a Manual focusing setting on the camera body.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

18-55mm is the lens many cameras come bundled with and it's usually not their best effort. Not the case here. This is a great lens. In fact I believe every lens Fujinon makes is a winner. They simply don't make 'budget' lenses. They may appear pricey compared to other manufacturers but if you compare them to lenses of the same quality, they are quite reasonable.I got this with an X-Pro1 just before leaving for three weeks in Asia. It was the only lens I took for this camera. The 27-82.5 equivilent was good for most cases. There were times when I wished for a bit wider or a bit closer but I opted for the f2.8 and lighter/shorter lens over the 18-135 3.5 as this was to be my 'walking around camera. (I had a DSLR with two lenses for special events.)As I just got back and I'm still downloading files I can't really say much about sharpness or image quality yet. They do look good on the LCD though.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I really like this Len. Autofocus is nearly silent. The lens is very sharp and has wider aperture than most kit lenses. This really doesn't feel like a kit lens at all. Doesn't feel cheap and has some heft to it. I got this lens to be my all around lens without the intention of ever using another lens with my fuji. So far it has served that purpose and I couldn't be happier with it.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

This "kit" lens for the Fuji line of X mount cameras is anything but a kit lens.

The quality of images it produces on my XE1 are amazing. I rarely have to do much in post on these shots. Contrast is great. Sharpness is great. Colors are usually right on the money.

I can handhold this camera with the optical image stabilization (OIS) turned on and get tack sharp images at 1/27th of a second! (See sunflower image below)

My only complaint is probably a camera issue - the auto focus hunts too much in dim light. It also occasionally misses focus in bright light (though a quick refocus half-press usually gets it right).

Overall - I am really impressed with this lens. For the full price, it's great. As a kit lens add on, it's a no brainer!

I originally planned to just buy a couple primes instead of zoom lenses for my Fuji X-T1. But after reading reviews, it seemed that this lens, which came as a kit for a good price, was the way to go. I'm not disappointed, and fully recommend it. I'll probably buy the 56mm 1.2 prime down the road, but in the meantime this is my go-to lens, particularly for hiking.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I bought this lens with the X-T1 with a little hesitancy as some people were saying this lens is over rated...well either they do not know what they are talking about or they got a bad copy . This lens delivers the goods . Sometimes I may need a little faster lens in low light situations and the 56 1.2 will do in those situations...but this little zoom stays on my camera ...and it focuses very quickly and it tracks accurately as well. Wonderful lens...if you only want one lens...this is it.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I photograph the things in my life - my dogs, my garden, my friends and the rural countryside where I live. I have owned Nikons since the late 70's, and belonged to camera clubs, and even exhibited my work in shows. I have 3 Nikon DSLR's and many lenses, but they are heavy, and I am not getting any younger, so I bought The Fujifilm XT-1 with the 18-55f/2.8-4. I was seriously blown away by this lens! Faster than any other zoom I have had, as sharp as any prime lens I own, and on this body, the most spontaneous combo imaginable. Small, light, beautiful color rendition, beautiful bokeh wide open at 2.8, a macro perfect for the garden flowers and bugs, frogs and other small and beautiful critters. It could only be improved by a bit more range on both ends, but that would involve some compromises on size, weight, and aperture - compromizes I don't think I would be willing to make.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I got this lens with a Fujifilm X-T1 body. I love the overall construction of the lens; it's solidly built. I also liked the aperture range, which is about a stop faster than most kit lenses. Just for fun, I compared this lens against my 24-70mm Nikkor. My first tests were disappointing; fine details were slightly mushy. However, I then disabled OIS, and got blown away. This lens rivals the 24-70mm for sharpness on a 16MP body. OIS is very good at low shutter speeds (think 1/100s or slower), but at least for me I see OIS degrading image quality when shutter speeds are faster than 1/125s.

I understand why this lens has no aperture ring markings (variable aperture), but it would be nice to have some kind of reference marks. This lens is a tremendous performer for me so far.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I use this lens for most of my photography, I also have the 18, 35 and 60mm lenses. I use those lens when I want faster speed or the best resolution I can get but the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom is sharper than I thought it would be. Solid build, smooth action, small and light weight. This lens is as good as my Canon zoom lenses. Wish it had f. stops on the lens like the others but I do understand being a non fixed aperture lens prevents this feature.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

This lens is used on an X-pro 1 body as the single, carry along lens for photojournalism, technical, and scenic photography. It works seamlessly with the camera and has good definition and is well made. Using the manual f-stop and focus requires more turns, and thus more effort, than a lens for a Leica rangefinder.
