I purchased this camera as a fun easy carry camera for snapshots and found art shots. I am a professional and my primary camera is a Mamiya 645AFD w/Leaf Aptus back so there is no pretending that the X-E1 is going to be my first string on a job But... It isn't bad!

I got the 35 f1.4 lens with it. So far I like everything about it except the speed of autofocus and the lack of RAW file support. While the X-E1 may not be a full sized full powered DSLR in the near instant focus it hits the mark far better than my Nikon D2x ever did. The D2x often would spin back and forth never choosing anything to focus on. The X-E1 may not focus as fast but it finds a target on the first pass.

The lack of support for RAW is a big issue for a lot of folks that have a set-in-stone routines for file processing. None of the major image application will properly process the Fuji X-Trans sensors files - even though that new sensor is one of the best thing about this little guy. But don't fret they are working on it I'm sure. (That's not anything I've read officially...)

For now the on-board processing is good. However, I do like the power of RAW and for that Fuji provides software (Silkypix) with the camera . It processes the files X-Trans RAW files great. It's just very alien from Adobe Camera RAW that I've always used and will add another step in my RAW file workflow.

I gave the camera a "four" because it isn't the perfect camera. Then again, I have yet to find a perfect camera.

Hope this helps.

I was looking for a hiking/travel replacement for the big DSLR.

Yes, this camera can take incredible images. However, I like to shoot things on the fly, and the auto focus was just not responsive enough for me. The manual focus is useless unless you have PLENTY of time to work with. The body was not as sturdy as I had hoped, felt somewhat toy like.
The auto ISO feature only works up to certain high ISO, especially if shooting in RAW. Video shouldnt have even been included. Im pretty sure an iphone would do a better job.

Pluses... It is light and fun to carry. The images are great and the lenses do a nice job, although they also felt toy-ish.

Not the camera for me, back to the big DSLR.
Granted im used to working with a DSLR and too stuck on the quickness and ease of use that a more expensive and heavier camera has to offer, and shouldnt expect the same type of performance out of a compact APS-C. However I still feel like the overall cost of the body and multiple lenses is too much for the performance that this camera can achieve.
If, however, you are in the market for this type of camera, I suggest looking at the Sony NEX-7 over this model.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

I was interested in trying a Fuji camera because I wanted to explore the film simulation modes. This was a kit with the 18-55mm zoom which really loved. The camera had the latest firmware already installed but it was slow to take a picture. It reminded me of the Canon M that I had for a short period of time. Plus, I kept clicking buttons while holding the camera. Perhaps the grip would have solved that problem. The autofocus in good light was fast but in the end, it was too difficult for me to get good pictures out of it. I have a Sony A6000 which I like better. I like the Fuji menus; it's faster to get in and make changes. In the end, I sent it back. Even though it wasn't for me, it's still a cool camera.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

This is a very comfortable camera to handle and I have large hands. Anything smaller I cannot handle. With the optional handgrip, it is really balanced for me. The only thing that is taking me a while to adjust to is the evf. I would rather have an optical viewfinder. The focusing could be faster, but I can live with it, since I use it mostly for landscape, street photography, and family photos. Overall, I like this camera, and can't wait to get another lens for it.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

I was looking for a great starter camera and tool to start learning about photography. I am very happy with the camera and the XF-18-55. The lens is no ordinary kit lens that was just bundled together with the camera. It's a really nice lens. Both the E-X1 camera and XF lens feel very solid. I feel like a great deal for E-X1 with XF 18-55 lens. Yes, the camera came out in 2012 I believe. But that doesn't keep the camera from taking great pictures.

I wanted to buy the 18-55 lens. The lens alone was [$]. Then lens and camera together were [$]. So I bought the camera for [$]. And it's worth ten times that! All the Fuji cameras with the 16mp x-trans sensor are superb. All I'll ever need.

        A caution for fill-flash photographers

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

This is a wonderful camera - well thought-out, excellent materials and construction.

Immediately upon receiving the camera, I upgraded the firmware. In "Set-Up 3" menu is a feature not documented in the manual, "PREVIEW EXP. IN MANUAL MODE". If you use fill-flash, you want to know about this setting, and you will probably want to turn it OFF. Otherwise, the electronic view finder will go dark on you. I don't know how the original firmware handles this issue.

Now if only Fujifilm will market a very long prime lens or a 2X tele-converter ...

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):

I make good use of my X-T1 but was looking for something more compact for throwing in a backpack. This camera wasn't a fit for me on a few fronts, particularly when compared to the X-T1 (which is a superb camera).

First, as many other reviewers state, the autofocus (esp with the pancake lens) is S L O W and just as bad it's loud. Loudness can be cool, I suppose, but it's a rickety, cheap noise.

Second, going to the theme of cheapness, this camera has a plasticky feel and the dials lack in the high precision tightness you get with the X-T1. That looseness is a big buzzkill.

Lastly, the lack of ISO control on the body of the camera was a bummer for me. I'm not sure what the generally accepted standard is for this, but having a dial for ISO on my X-T1 made me feel lost without it here.

This camera (particularly when set up with the pancake) didn't let me reach my goals of having a compact camera with easy manual control and a high-quality tactile feel. I'm curious to see how it compares to similarly priced options in the market.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

I'd give the X-E1 5 stars if it were not for the fact that it is too easy to turn it on. Thus, I constantly bump the switch and end up draining the battery quicker.

As to use, this is now my go-to camera. My Canon 5D bodies spend most of the time in the bag. This camera is lighter, and in many cases takes better images.

I will note, I've heard a lot of complaints about the x-trans sensor. If only those critics would do a little research and learn how to process the RAW files correctly. I have not experienced any of those issues.

The kit lens is amazing. I also bought the 10-24mm f4. It too is an amazing lens. They are sharp edge-to-edge and have a quality feel.

I'm considering selling some of my Canon bodies and getting another Fujifilm. Perhaps the new X-T1.

I'm advanced hobbyist that used to be a professional wedding/portrait photographer. I use the X-E1 as a blog tool and to build my collection of Pacific Northwest photographs.I love the ergonomic rangefinder style controls that allow me to concentrate on my subject, composition and lighting. I love the low light capabilities that produce usable pictures at 6400 ISO. The Fujinon lenses produce incredibly sharp photographs. The focusing system is quirky, especially in low light. Once you get some experience you can overcome this weakness and create some amazing images. The plusses outweigh the weaknesses of this camera.

Its all manual settings make you think as you shoot. I do wish it had a better grip on the right side. (see recommended accessories)

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought the E1 because I noticed I was using a tiny point and shoot camera and hardly my Nikon D700 with my many nice Nikkor and Zeiss lenses. The D700 is so much bigger than my old Nikon FM2 and F2 bodies, but the P&S is just not enough camera for my styles of photography. The E1 fits the bill nicely, and my joy in photography is back. I don't regret choosing the E1 vs. the E2 to get a better price - with the firmware update the autofocus is great. It is well built, solid, and well deigned, almost everything I would want. I was surprised how effective the manual focusing was through the EVF. I love the Fuji film simulations! The camera, especially with the 18-55 lens, is not tiny, it is like carrying a small 35mm SLR or rangefinder with a noticeable lens. People will notice the camera, it is not unobtrusive. There are only a few things I would prefer different: instead of a "M" focusing setting on the camera, I would prefer a marked focusing scale on the lenses with an "A" setting on the lens. I would prefer a higher-resolution EVF and no LCD panel, to save space and make the camera more rugged (and less expensive). I appreciate the little emergency flash but could also have lived without it. The tripod mount really should have been centered on the lens axis! These are all nitpicks - the camera is great! The main thing is it can produce great images!

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):

I did a lot of research before selecting this camera among the various mirrorless options - the Sony NEX/Alpha series being the runner up. I chose the Fujifilm X-E1 because I liked the blend of manual controls and on-screen menus and the ease of toggling between the two. After comparing images on line, I also found that I preferred Fujifilm's color rendering and the multiple film emulations that it offers. I prefer a more filmic look with more natural colors.

I ordered the body with the kit zoom lens which is extremely capable. When in automatic mode, the camera makes sensible decisions with respect to aperture and ISO to generate pleasing images. Results with manual legacy lenses and adapters have also been gratifying. Post processing editing has been minimal thus far. I have yet to fully explore this camera's many features - I'm sure I will become ever more impressed over time.

Minor drawbacks thus far: 1) battery life seems a bit short but I've been giving the EVF a workout. 2) Autofocus could be faster and more decisive. However, I prefer to focus manually so it has not been a major issue for me. Your mileage may vary.

In sum, this camera gives one the option of being as manual or as automatic as one wishes. The ergonomics are excellent and I feel connected to the photography process in a way that I haven't felt since I knocked about with my dad's old SLR's when I was a teenager. It's fun to use.

Finally, kudos to Fuji, BTW, for continuing to invest in this model in its firmware updates, thereby delaying its eventual obsolescence.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):

I bought this (used) to use as a daily use camera instead of carrying my D800 everywhere. I picked up the 35mm f/1.4 lens because I wanted something faster than the kit lens. I absolutely love it. Granted it can't compete with a monster like the D800, but it is nice having something that I can just grab and not worry about damaging a $ rig. I wish it was a little faster, but I think its a rockin little camera.

This camera makes me want to take it out and shot. It has made photography fun for me again. I got so tired and turned off by carrying my D7100 that at some point I never took it with me anymore. This little guy is light and fun. Not only does it look great, the sensor captures great detail. I keep it set to auto ISO and shoot in aperture priority with beautiful images at ISO 6400. I really enjoy the electronic viewfinder. I find that because of it, I only take one shot with correct exposure instead of several I would take with my DSLR before reaching the right exposure. I wouldn't use this in studio or on a location shoot however. This camera is more for a slow, enjoyable style of shooting. That's why I like it. One thing however, even with all the firmware updates, it does have hard time focusing in low light. But I do not at all mind switching to manual focus and using focus peaking to focus manually. The camera really is a joy to shoot with.

I really like the retro look and lightweight feel. It's really fun to shoot manually but putting it back into auto is a little slow. I shoot at least 300 pictures raw without any battery loss.

Comments about X-E1 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Silver):

Photographically, this camera works the same as my FujiFilm point-and-shoot that I've had for years, and cost three times as much. I absolutely LOVE the ergonomics and bought it because hauling around my full-frame Canon and L-Series lenses around all the time gets to be cumbersome. The dials are intuitive and remind me of working with my original Pentax 35mm film camera. However, the photo quality is around average, and VERY noisy, even during daytime shooting at ISO 200. I love everything about this camera other than the photo quality it produces, and even when using it with an f/1.4 lens, the images are nowhere near tack-sharp. Although I had high hopes for it, I returned it within a week.
