I starting exposing film in 1968, Pentax, Minolta, Alpha, Nikon 35mm film cameras, Mamiya C330s, RB67s MF, 4x5 View Cameras, Toyo, Cambo. Went digital when the Fuji S2 came out, then onto the S5, Nikon D3, D700 , Nikon P7100, AW100 (kayak Fishing dream camera) and Now Fuji X E1 with 18-55. Am I pro level shooter? Yes. Am I an expert in all things photographic? Absolutely not! Do I like camera reviews? Not really, they seem either emotionally riddled or they just repeat the same stuff I can get from the manufacturer. Therefore I will attempt give you my observations from this camera which I have had in my hands since the end of August. Is it a D3, D700 or D800? of course not! It does not claim to be either. Is the image quality as good? YES, YES!.Will it produce a technically equivalent image as the Holy Nikonian Trinity as listed above? YESWill it do it in all shooting environments? NO. Will it do it in most? YES.Will it produce a technically equivalent image as the 3-Ds above without the weight and the obvious HEY LOOK AT ME while I photograph with this huge brick of a system? YES Would I use it to shoot a fast paced event? No. Could I? = Yes.Would I use it to shoot the staged meet and greets and booth shoots at an event? Yes, YES its 16mp full depth Fuji color and dynamic range is great for that. Did I mention it is lite does not weigh much at all. Would I use it to shoot a whole Wedding? NO, Would I use it to shoot parts of a wedding? Absolutely YES! It is a sneaky little thing.Would I use it to shot a portrait session in my studio? YES, Absolutely. Will it produce a pro level, super sharp and colorful image? ABSOLUETLY YES. GOTTA love those FUJI lenses. I use Fuji lenses with my View Cameras and these FX Fuji lenses are sharp. Will it render a pro level image with my Nikon 60mm AFD MICRO and Nikkor 135 AIs lense with the $10 China made adapter, in totally manual mode? OH YEA, creamy skin tones, great bokeh if your into that? Remember totally manual (Exposure, focus) don't ya? The internal meter in manual mode was very responsive. Put the camera in shoot without a lens mode and photograph like a manual maniac. The Old Nikkor 135 AIs gave an appreciably wonderful creamy skin texture. In mounting it to my PB Nikon bellows and 135 Nikkor enlarger lens the package is a lite macro unit with live viewing for focusing. The color is Fuji-ish of course which I feel is great color I Just loved those colors from the S2-S5. NOTE all manufactures ALL OF THEM control color a little different. NIKON is different than Cannon and Cannon is different from Sony, different is not bad it is just different. Learn to control your color use a color checker pass port and Lightroom and you will be the master, as you season your color to your taste. You have control of this color in camera and in RAW. I shoot in sRGB, L-raw + jpeg using a color checker passport and sometimes a sekonic L-758DR external meter in my capture. There is no problem with reading the Fuji raw files with Adobe camera raw, light room the supplied Fuji software, or numerous readers via the e-net. It has 4 B&W modes, numerous color modes and format \ aspect ratio modes all quickly switchable.I am a right eye dominate shooter and in using this camera with the e-viewfinder it covers my right eye and frees my left eye to view the scene and surroundings. One massive cool feature is the auto eye piece thing. The camera is in live view mode until you put your eye to the view finder then it switches. Since I am right eye dominate and can have my left eye free to view the scene I can make up for the slow view finder pickup. I use the view finder as reference for framing but follow the action with my free eye. This has rendered the slow-ish compared to the BIG D's little camera capable of catching the antics of the grandkids. What you DO get with this rig is a pro-level, pro-quality, lite 16mp camera with a very sharp and versatile zoom lens. A camera with auto bracketing and HDR features. HDR video which has impressed me with the two movies I made with this of the grandkids. I am not a filmmaker, no Ingmar Bergman or Hitchcock here. What you DO NOT get is a super fast shoot the fast sports camera, buy the D3-D4 for that. What you DO get is lite rig which will give pro level images for slower subjects, travel , vacation all fitting in a carryon REI 40 liter bag with clothes, tablet and a mefoto road trip tripod. It is so nice not carry 50# of gear on vacation and getting singled out as a "working PRO" with all the collateral hassles. The small package has taken me a bit of getting use to at first in how to wrap my hands around its small frame, it took a day or so of walking about doing a Jay Maisel like photo-walk-about. It is very doable now and is a wonderful thing to shoot. I did buy the Fuji EF-42 Flash and the Fuji remote which works great and I will comment on in another "review". Buy an extra Fuji battery, I know there are third party battery people but I am a real proponent for OEM camera batteries. The mefoto Road trip tri-pod is perfect with this camera. The bottom line this camera is massive cool, and fun to shoot and if you do not need the fastest capture speed, allot of one's pro work could be done with this camera, mine will be. Namaste, and good shootingMichael L. YoungHouston.

I primarily shoot portraits both in studio with strobes and in the field with and without supplemental lights. My style is to catch people in motion or mid expression and with active body language. I currently use a Nikon D700 and loved it but I recently injured my back and now need a lighter Camera/lens combination. The Fuji X-E1 has excellent high ISO performanceand the 18-55mm lens is sharp edge to edge but the view finder jitters so much when you pan to follow your subject that it prevents nailing the instant when that sparkle of personality comes. If I shot stationary subjects or scenics the Fuji would be the answer to my need for a lighter weight high performance camera but unfortunately I had to return it and hope that future iterations will focus quickly enough to do the job.

If you are on the fence wondering if to get this camera or not, my advise is to not wait because with the current discounts and sales it will not last long. This camera was on my wish/want list for a year but when the X-T1 came out I was going to get that instead when my finances and availability of the camera meshed. However B&H had the X-E1 on sale for $[*] with a 16G card and camera case so I immediately ordered it and am glad I did because a few days later it was sold out.The first thing I did when it arrived was to update the firmware for the camera and lenses. (I bought th 35mm 1.4, the 55-200 and the 27mm when they were on sale a couple of months ago in anticipation of getting getting the X-T1 with the 18-55 lens.)I like the camera a lot, the pictures as others have said are gorgeous and with the firmware updates the focus issues and a lot of the other complaints have been addressed by Fuji and are not the problem I had worried about from some of the reviews I read.I still plan on getting the X-T1 at sometime down the road, probably when the next update comes out and the price drops but for now am happy to have saved $1000 by getting the X-E1.

When it comes to mirror less systems, I don't think anyone does it better then Fuji. They are always striving to improve their existing models via firmware and bring out updates to future models by listening to their customer base. Their line of lenses is strong, second only to Olympus and Panasonic... unfortunately for the micro 4/3rds system, their sensor tech is vastly inferior to Fuji's in many regards and most of their bodies don't have all the controls in all the right places... The exception of course is the OMD.

Fujifilm X-E1 with XF 18-55 mm lens

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Black):

So far so good. I'm used to Fuji X100 controls and way of work, so transition to X-E1 wasn't a problem.
Very good IQ, small size, nice design.
Lens very well build, working fine.
Very nice travel camera, not as flashy and big as Nikons I used for cm recital work.
        I can't complain.
        Fantastic price as of now.
Idont know how much more X-E2 is faster and improved but for the current price (with lens) it was the perfect choice for me as a small, great image IQ alternative to bulky DSLR.

This is a camera for the photographer who wants to control the camera, not be controlled by it. Most quality cameras today can be set manually, but few of them have all of those controls at your fingertips. Yes, the camera can also become as automatic as you'd like it to be. Yes, this camera and lens combination are light, smaller than a hi-end DSLR and far easier to carry around. Yes, this camera and lens combination produce superb image quality. But for me, it's the ease of assuming control of the camera that make it special.Another major consideration is the lineup of superb lenses Fuji offers for this series of cameras.

            Great Camera, Great Service!

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Silver):

It took me a year to finally give in to my desire to buy this camera. Not a single business in town carried the kit package or even the camera body.

I shopped around online and decided that B & H was the most practical choice. The kit included a 16GB class 10 memory card and a nice camera bag AND with free shipping, what else could a guy want? Well, after waiting over a year, I didn't want to wait a week longer so I paid the shipping charge and received it within two days by 10:30 am.

The camera is beautiful. The bag is really quite nice, especially being a freebie. I have only had the opportunity to shoot with it a couple of times and I am thoroughly reading the manual so I can make this gem shine brightly.

About 4 days after I ordered the camera, B & H lowered the price by $100. I sent the company an email to see if they might consider refunding the $100. more that I had payed. To my pleasant surprise they offered to do just that! It hasn't posted to my bank account yet but I received an invoice stating that the transaction had gone through on the store's end yesterday. I expect that my account will be credited most likely by tomorrow.

All in all, my experience has been one of excellence with the entire purchase, delivery and customer service from B & H!! I am certain that I will order from them again. Thanks to the entire team for your commitment to excellence and for your generosity!

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Silver):

I just purchased this camera as a supplement for the Fuji X20 I purchased last year, which while being small and quiet, doesn't have the low light/high iso performance I've come to love with a DSLR. This camera will likely replace the X20 for most carry around/every day use, with the X20 going where I really need a compact camera that I wouldn't cry over if it were lost (in my pocket cycling, kayaking etc) or really want a super flexible, small camera.

I haven't had the X-E1 very long, but my first impressions:
                1) nearly as small as the X20, with a small lens mounted I consider it a pocketable camera. With the zoom on it's still a lot smaller and lighter than a full DSLR.
                2) not quite as quiet, to have reasonably priced interchangeable lenses, it had to give up a leaf shutter, so it does make a little sound on shutter release, but nothing compared to the mirror noise of a DSLR. It's only noticeable if it's very quiet.
                3) great image quality - at least as good as the D700 I use for work, and though it has a smaller sensor, it still has a similar file size and ability to produce prints perhaps just a bit larger. It may even be a bit better in low light.
                4) I'm having to readjust - not that it's a bad thing, but this camera uses an old style shutter speed dial and some lenses actually adjust f-stop on the lens.. it's been some time since I've had to do that!
                5) The electronic viewfinder can appear a bit dim to me at times - especially in bright light - it doesn't appear to play that well with my glasses which tint to dark grey in the sun.

Excellent choice for those reluctant to give up their full full frame DSLRs. Offers comparable image quality with lighter size and weight. Great for travel. EVF is excellent, with users choice of shooting data displayed outside of image area. A few minuses: too easy to inadvertently push buttons on back whlle handling camera; poorly written Owner's Manual; no indication in Manual that camera and lens firmwares can be upgraded by downloads from Fuji website; so far, a limited choice of Fuji lenses.

I needed something relatively small and easy to carry but was unwilling to sacrifice too much quality. This little combo is sweet. I took some photos at a wedding this past weekend and the results were excellent! My big gun is a Nikon D800 and while the Fuji doesn't equal the Nikon in terms of image quality (you wouldn't expect it to) it holds it's own rather nicely. There are some very useful features on this little guy and it is certainly quick enough for my use. Image stabilization works well too. Very capable and an easy camera to use. A worthy back up to my D800!

                    AND IT JUST LOOKS COOL!

I've been using (still) Lumix LX-3 and then LX-7 for a couple of years. The Fuji is completely another kind of animal. Physics and optics are top notch (as far as I can touch an see). For logics, it's something else.
Basics like metering and focusing methods have all that it takes to mix you up. Once you've found your way, ...you can be sure you'll loose it again. In the end, the manual focus mode is the easyest one. Unless a fairly good experience at working with cameras, this one is not particularly easy.
Some features work confusingly: you can record your own groups of settings (7) and then call them via the Q menu; once done, going back in the Q menu, the menu item doesn't indicate the choice you have previously made, it's back on the neutral position; so if you don't remember which set up you had choosen (in order, for example, to test another one), you're lost!
Shooting in a hurry? Not sure I will ever succeed with it, never like I do with the Lumix.
Image textures are wonderfully rich and film simulation styles are classy, usable options. Need to work in high ISO? There's probably nothing on the market that comes close ti it!
This camera (with its kit lens) is a serious machine. It's a bit of a challenge but I like it.
Not big compared to full or mid-size cameras but still too big for travel. Quality output of today's high-end point & shot cameras is plenty good enough if you want t bring back beautyfull, memorable picture. The X-E1 is for the Art!

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Black):

I sold all of my Canon 5D Mark iii bodies and lenses to go 100% Fuji. NOT unhappy at all. After using this for a number of jobs and a number of personal uses it is all I was told it was. Easy to use and simple to understand. The camera body just fits my style and attitude when photographing people. It is personable and just works.

There is a learning curve with this system and I cant go into all of them as it is different for each photographer, but learning the subtle differences in focus and and tracking is key to using this. Once that is mastered it is like you are just seeing and not operating a camera. Such a vast difference from the huge DSLRs.

The kit lens is outstanding in sharpness and quality. Any other "kit" lens I have ever used had actually never been used because they were low quality and were just lesser quality. This 18-55mm lens is outstanding. Sharp to the point of (dare I say it) to sharp? It is just silly.

The two negatives I must say is 1) the battery. After about 300 shots I need to change the battery as I do not like shooting on a low battery. I am told you can get about 350-375 shots out of a battery but why chance it. I purchased three more batteries so it is not an issue. 2) The silly function of the flash not working when you disable the "beep" when it is focused. Not sure why that is...but it is.

But all in all the camera is such a welcomed change from the huge DSLRs out there. I feel liberated and feel more like a photographer and less like a guy with a bunch of equipment.

The current pricing makes this a no brainer if you are willing to PP RAW in a few selective programs (CaptureOne, PhotoNinja or Iridient). These give you the most from the X Trans sensor. Handling is very nice and the lenses are top notch, even the kit zoom is more than a kit zoom.

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Silver):

I've been searching for a reasonably small, interchangeable lens camera for casual family photo's. I wanted superior quality, flexibility, outstanding IQ and great low light performance. Who doesn't?? When the Fujifilm XE2 was released, the XE1 with 18-55mm lens was deeply discounted. As I had been eying the Fuji X line, I decided to purchase the EX1 as the bundle with the EX1 and 18-55mm seemed a terrific buy. The EX1 has become my third camera behind my Nikon D800 and D7000. With it's APS C size sensor, it's miles ahead of my Nikon V1 and Coolpix 7000 in both picture quality and low light performance. I wanted something to take really good pictures but be reasonably portable. After a month of use. I have put away my little Nikons for good and relegated the 7000 to the position of "for sports only." The D800 is demonstrably superior camera in virtually every way (less the obvious portability problem) so I'll use that for serious stuff but, for most all else (save rapidly moving targets,) the Fuji has won the day! As a Nikon user, I found the system readily understandable and I like having most critical parameters (less ISO) available without resorting to a menu - ISO is defaulted to the Fn button. The size is great for me as it's small enough for me to want to take it along but, be advised, it WILL NOT fit in your shirt pocket- trench coat - maybe...
The kit lens is very, very good. I have and use the best of the Nikon glass and this lens is an outstanding overall performer. The Image stabilization is the best I've used.
The camera is certainly not a speed demon. Focusing in diminished light with the kit lens can be adventuresome but if you stick with it you are generally rewarded! I got one of the hot shoe flashs to help the lens at the 55mm end and it works exceptionally well with the camera. I should mention that you'll need to update the firmware for both camera and lens first thing. This camera, like most others, has it's share of features that are essentially "me too" marketing - like the DOF indicator bar, dynamic range expansions, film simulation bracketing etc. that don't do much for me but look good in the brochure. Underneath all that there is a superior photo making machine that lends itself well to either letting the machine decide or to complete manual control.
If I continue to be as impressed as I am now, I'll likely get the 55-200mm and the 35mm f/1.4 lenses and use the Fuji as my vacation kit. It certainly isn't a perfect set-up as nothing is, but, I probably won't miss toting the D800, 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200mm plus illumination and supporting gear around cathedrals, museums and other crowded tourist venues.

Comments about X-E1 Digital Camera Kit with XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS Lens (Silver):

This is a great camera. Image quality is excellent, also in very low light. Autofocus is not as slow as some people might make it sound like. It all depends what you plan to shoot and how you do it. If you're into fast action (sports, kids running around, etc) then you might be better off with something else. But for all other uses I find the autofocus to be more than just adequate and very precise.

The only beef I have with it is battery live. It could be better, but I think that's the case with most mirror less cameras.

I'm very happy with this camera.

I needed something in between professional and point and shoot and this is the solution. It has enough professional features that give you control over shutter, aperture, lens, etc to make it useful for a professional, but also has accurate and reliable automation. Highly recommended for anyone looking for that sweet spot but doesn't want to spend over a thousand dollars.
