Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

I recently purchased one of these as an inexpensive backup to my Canon DSLR bodies. Still patting myself on the back for doing so :)

I use my NEX 5R pretty much exclusively for video; I purchased an inexpensive adapter so I could use all of my EF mount primes. In a lot of ways, the image quality is just as good as on my Canon bodies. In some ways, it is even better.

The low-light performance is surprisingly fantastic. I have shot video with the ISO over 1,000 and gotten lovely results with almost no video noise. I've been able to get some sharper, more defined images with the NEX as well (not overly sharp, of course).

The only real problem I have is with adjusting aperture. If you're shooting with EF lenses, you will need to invest in a more expensive lens adapter that lets you adjust aperture electronically. With the less expensive adapters, you have to first set the aperture of your lens on a Canon body and then transfer to your NEX. Kind of a pain, but not enough to discourage me from using this camera extensively.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a nice backup to their more expensive camera bodies, or to anyone who wants to shoot high quality video on a smaller budget.

    A decent SLR like camera

    By Surya

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

I have been a big fan of the NEX 5 quality for a while now. I always wanted a DSLR quality with a small foot print and easy to carry. I feel camera shouldnt be a burden to carry , without compromising on quality. I bought this body only as it was 350 well in my budget., ordered lens seperately for [$] on [*]. However its better to buy the 5T here with lens for the same price. You will not regret your purchase. Also, dont bother the apps or wifi, they are unresponsive sometimes. However the picture quality is awesome, that is what all you need.

    GREAT camera

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

This camera is great. I use it mainly as a vlogging camera (I make youtube videos) so the flip around screen is great for that purpose. I'm coming from a Canon so the controls were a little different, but very easy to pick up. Highly recommend it.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

The nex-5 series has been the biggest suprise for me. I had the nex-5n and when the nex-5r was released I had to have it. I use my nex-5r for everything outside of the studio and sometimes even in the studio. It packs enough manual controls for me to have fun and the image quality is second to none. I primarily shoot it in manual with manual lenses. Magnified zoom and focus peaking makes it effortless. I haven't been able to find another camera to replace it.

The only issue that I have with the camera is that you can no reassign the controls. For instance while shooting in manual the top dial controls aperture and the back control wheel controls shutter. Well with a manual lense shooting in manual mode, the top dial has no function. The control wheel still controls shutter but I would much rather have the top dial control that. So in order to compensate for this I've been shooting in shutter priority which uses the top dial to adjust the shutter speed. If we could just assign what we wanted the two wheels/dials to do, it would be the best compact mirrorless APS-C size sensor camera.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

Bought this for the size. I have learned I don't tend to carry my reg. sized DSLR in casual settings. Too big. But I do demand quality pics. So this seemed a good solution. Camera IS small. I also opted for the 16-50 collapsable lens, keeping this package nearly "pocketable". Great. All other reviewers are correct in their findings. There is a lot of menu diving, but I forced myself to learn all the settings/options so I can quickly navigate with really no problem. Yes battery life is low. I guess carry a spare. Video is excellent. Screen is hard to read in normal sun. (I hoped those reviews were wrong, but they are not). Image/color quality to me is very good EXCEPT this lens has bad barrel distortion (curved straight lines) at the wide angle end of zoom range. Build quality is good. For those interested, a 16 gig card will give 1 hr plus of video or about 2500 jpeg stills, both at highest quality. I wish Sony offered more lens options. The flip out screen works well for this senior when doing shots down low to ground. I have no use for the wifi feature. One obscure feature I love is the level indicator. In fact there are quite a few features that were pleasant surprises that Sony doesn't reference in their marketing. This may become my main "go to" camera for my casual shooting expeditions.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

This is an excellent camera for novice photographers looking to "step up" to the next level. I researched mirrorless cameras for months and decided on the NEX 5R. This camera has DSLR quality in a small package. Users will need to spend time learning the controls. With the growing list of lenses available plus adapters for other lenses, the options are endless. This is a GREAT VALUE.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

Having studied/compared this mirrorless with NEX-6/7 and other top brands, I believe I made the right decision for all the features I needed and the money I spent. 2 weeks after received it, I have taken a bout 2000 pics under different conditions in attempts to test out the functions/settings available. The pictures look better than what I took with my other $3000 N and C brands. I like the tough screen with user friendly manual and the two dials (top and back)able to adjust exposure parameters separately at the same time. I have not had a chance to try out the movies yet. This is the right gear meets all you need if you are not a pro living on a camera.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

I am still learning how to use this camera as I am a novice. So far I really like the quality of photos. It's easy to handle and feels sturdy. Beats carrying around a dslr camera!
My primary purpose was to use it to take pictures of my child. It's very hard to get a clean picture while she's constantly moving, but when I get that perfect opportunity the shot comes out amazingly great.
As a side note, indoor pictures come out much better when you use the flash.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5R Mirrorless Digital Camera:

I have been shooting with Canon DSLR's for years now, and just bought this Sony Alpha NEX-5R for use by my workgroup to document vehicles and components.
I bought it with the 16mm pancake lens. On Auto, this camera takes very nice pictures at 16MP, and even at high ISO, the noise is very minimal. Especially Chroma noise is almost nonexistent.

On Manual, you get full manual controls, with the upper wheel setting shutter, and the thumb wheel around the menu nav buttons setting aperture. ISO is addressable to one of a few soft keys, so you can quickly change any or all critical settings. WB is also assignable to a soft key.

This camera makes me want to sell my Canon DSLR kit and get one for myself.

Always ready in my everyday pack. Thanks to its aps-c sensor, you get amazing bokeh and very low noise even at high iso. AF is precise and reliable but not quite as fast as on d-slrs. Very good as a second camera with the excellent 50mm F1.8 oss telephoto lens. Great value for this level of quality.
