I purchased the RX1 primarily as a compact "carry-around" alternative to my DSLR. The selling point, for me, was the full-frame sensor. This was the first Sony camera product I've owned, so I was going into this experience with my mind wide open.

Image quality is exceptional. Side-by-side, color rendering is on par with my Leica M-E and Summilux 35mm 1.4 attached. Granted, the Sony doesn't give you the "Leica look" (that subtle 3-D characteristic where the subject seems to pop out of a creamy background), but color contrast and minimizing of CA are splendid.

Carrying the camera around is a joy if you're used the relative bulk of a DSLR at your hip. It's not as light as an Olympus OM5, but it also feels sturdier and stronger than micro four-thirds (and most other mirror-less) cameras. You don't get the impression that anything is made of cheap plastic...the camera feels like it was hewn out of a magnificent chunk of magnesium alloy.

I've never met an electronic viewfinder I've liked, so my thoughts on it aren't worth much to anyone who likes using them. To me, I always feel detached from the scene when peering through one. But, nonetheless, as far as EVFs go, this one works seamlessly with the camera body...and it should if it's going to be sold as an accessory.

If I want to hold a camera two feet out in front of my face for composition, I'll use my Iphone, not a nearly 3 grand piece of finely tuned digital optics. Come on Sony, throw the EVF in there with the package. This camera is too good to make the EVF an option.

I've got no complaints with the Zeiss 35mm fixed lens. As stated previously, CA is well corrected, and while there might be some slight vignetting wide-open, it dissipates very quickly stopped down. No significant lens distortion from what I have been able to tell.

Auto-focus is fast enough in situations with ample light to track random people along a city street. As light drops off, so does the speed of the auto focus...rather steeply I may add. In low light, the AF will dance with you...so if you plan on following your 5 year old nephew around indoors, bring your patience with you. Outdoors, it's a piece of cake, although obviously not even close to par with full frame DSLRs. This is not a replacement for sports photography.

Whether you're a pro looking for a high quality reportage camera, a wealthy enthusiast, or a serious hobbyist, the camera is a joy to operate, and once you get a little accustomed to the menus (not a difficult task), walking around with this little guy is just plain fun.

need more time to test out the whole system..
will post another review for it .
Reason why I give 3 star is it take me more time to figure out why things don't work .
However, o ne thing for sure is it produce great color and very good contrast possible because of the good lens .
Pro
1 color and contrast .
2.bulid quality .
Con
1.why at A mode shutter speed stay or stuck at 1/80 most of time .
2.no image stabilization ,very shallow depth of field, i used to other smaller sensor cam.
but that is good for portrait photo not macro.
3 difficult to compose with the LCD in bright day. screen get warm after a continue use.
4.too many options to choose from .not enough custom function buttons (need one more c-button )
else has to go through the menu looking around .
5.focus below other high end compact. Cannot focus if contrast bright say object next to a light. Slow as well compare to rx100.
6.sony really need to improve & update the cam software. The sony-Raw conversion is even slower than the cam to focus even in my icore7 4gb RAM computer.
It will take very long time to process every single thing for every picture!
Wish list
1 sony update this cam software soon
(for faster focus ,release the limit of shutter speed at 1/80)
2 get the wireless flash system to work.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

The sharpness and overall image quality of this camera are astounding - better than my other much more expensive cameras . Because of that it's the camera that I carry with me and use whenever possible. It's great for travel and landscapes.

That said, it's useless for wildlife photography which demands long focal length lenses.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

Truly a sensational shooting experience. The RX-1 packs a one of the finest full-frame sensors yet to hit the market. Couple this factoid with the fact that it is the world's smallest camera with a full-frame sensor and you have the recipe for a game-changer.The RX-1 performs incredibly well in low-light conditions, using only ambient light. Taking into consideration its portability, you will find yourself far more compelled to carry it along on night outings than you would, perhaps, your dSLR kit.Since being released, the RX-1 now has a brother named RX-1r, which is identical to its older brother, sans the AA (anti-aliasing) filter, allowing for sharper images but at the cost of some DoF (depth-of-field). While that can be perceived as an additional plus, to some shooters, it too can be con. No to mention, the fact that the Sony RX-1r lacks an AA filter also lends it a bit of a problem with moire. Sony made a stellar move by making both camera, the RX-1 and the RX-1s the same price. This is something Nikon should adopt, considering they already adopt Sony sensors into a vast majority of their products, including the D800 and it's AA filter-free counterpart. The camera handles incredibly well. As small of an addition it may be, the threaded shutter release button is something I wish Sony had carried into their full-frame mirror line - the A7x series. Some people may have issues with the fact that this camera lacks a built-in view find, but that would've added to the mass of the final product. To be frank, I think Son'y primary objective with this camera was to make it as small as possible. That being said, I personally like that the VF options are optional, considering you may not always want one mounted to it.Another thing some people may not like about this camera is that it sometimes hunts in no-light conditions. Personally, I'm far from surprised that it does hunt, considering nearly any other camera's AF system would respond in a similar fashion. That said, in my own opinion, this issue is moot. Now, what some may love about this camera is its form factor, internal UI (user interface), and the ergonomics. I cannot stress how utterly divine this camera feels in my hands. The focus wheel is fly-by-wire, meaning, that it is not mechanical - it is an electronic focusing system. If you are a Canon user and have used the 85mm 1.2L II, you will not be unfamiliar with this type of manual focus. Having shot with 85mm 1.2L II extensively as well as the RX-1, I can safely say that the RX-1 performs much better. I hardly notice the fact that it is fly-by-wire, to be honest.I'm going touch onto easily the most incredible part of this fixed lens system: the lens itself. The Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 Sonnar with T* coating is by far, the best 35mm lens I have ever used. I say after having used Nikon's 35mm G offering, Canon's 35mm L offering, and the Carl Zeiss 25mm 2.0 for Nikon and Canon mounts. The lens, should it ever be sold standalone, would likely go for $1,800+. It is that good, people.Oh, and the leaf shutter? Utterly ridiculous. Gives this camera true stealth, of course after disabling the audio that occurs upon its actuation. As much as I love this camera, I'm giving it only four stars because Sony has failed to do any firmware updates for the RX series and frankly, that ticks me off. I want this product to be support like the prosumer product it is, considering we paid the prosumer premium for it.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

The RX 1 may seem like a novelty, however, some of the best images I've captured (consistently) have been from this camera in the past year I've owned it. The pure truth is in the product, which ultimately comes down to photo quality. Subjects in frame are crystal clear, sharp, with spot on color. I'm more of a hobbyist, and owning other higher end Canons with premium lenses, I wasn't getting the consistent quality of shots I get from this little handheld. It excels in low light where I can take clear shots without shutter lag and blur. Awesome for what I need, albeit, not perfect, but I feel it was worth the investment.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

Without question, it's the stunning image quality that is the main selling point for this camera, although the size, design and construction are stellar as well. I have a Nikon D700, and the low light capabilities of this Sony RX1 are right up there with it, particularly when using the multi auto ISO feature. In my opinion, the RX1 is too slow for action shots, or spontaneous street photos, but if you have adequate time to compose your images you will love this camera. One main point of concern. Apparently, there is a power issue where the battery drains when the shutter button is pressed even when the camera is turned off! What this means is that if you store your RX1 in a tight bag overnight where the shutter button may be depressed, you will wake up to a fully drained battery. I'm waiting for Sony to address this with a firmware update, assuming it is something that can be addressed with a firmware update. So far, nothing from Sony. Other than that, I absolutely love this camera.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

You already know from other reviews that the RX1is small, expensive and delivers great image quality. What I discovered when I started using it was that it reminds me of the best features of cameras I've used before. It feels like a Leica M4. It is understated and quiet like a Konica Hexar. It's about the same size as a Leica CL. Those parallels make it fun to operate. To that, it adds a host of modern conveniences like focus peeking, a conveniently located exposure compensation dial and a 21st century automation. The fixed lens is a little limiting, but I wasn't looking to replace my DSLR.
This is the camera I take when I want to take pictures just for myself. It is utterly enjoyable to use. Then, when I get back home and see the raw files I realize how lucky I am to have this great little camera.
Buy this if you can live with the fixed lens and steep price - you won't regret it.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

The reason I gave it 4 stars only is lack of wireless flash triggering firmware, similar to Sony a77.
It's imposible to use a single external flash and the electronic viewfinder (FDA-EV1M) at the same time. Actually, I like the external EVF better and I wouldn't mind to use my HVL-F43AM flash attached to a bracket.

These are the reasons I really love this camera:

            1. Compact size

            2. Excellent image quality (see cropped to 568x878 pixels section of 6000x4000 pixels photo - F/2 1/1600s ISO-100 ) - still sharp

            3. Macro mode of the Zeiss lens

            4. Leaf shutter that syncs flash at every speed (great with built in flash as a fill light)

            5. Convenient location of the shutter speed dial

            6. Shutter button accepts a mechanical (threaded) cable release

            7. Perfect location of the battery/memory card cover (it still opens with my tripod's quick release plate attached)

            8. Perfect location of the built in flash (not obstructed by hot shoe devices)

            9. Slim battery, which I can store in the SD card pocket of my bag

            10. USB battery charge inside the camera

            11. Easy to use Quick Navi menu

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

I am by no means a professional photographer but I love photography and this camera provides an incredible amount of enjoyment in that area.

Build Quality is top notch. The camera has a great weight to it in your hands and feels incredibly solid - except for the back navigation wheel. Why sony felt the need to make it a cheap plastic when everything else is metal just blows my mind.

Picture quality is absolutely amazing. The dynamic range this camera is able to produce is just something that I've never experienced in my use of my Canon 5dmk2, mk3, Nikon d80, d600, fuji xpro1.

The carl zeiss lens is spectacular and really shows off it's uniqueness when used close up.

At the end of the day I did end up returning the camera - I have difficulty taking steady shots when using a camera at arms length and not having the ability to hold it up close to my face to add stabilization. Yes the external viewfinders are options but I want something that is an all in one package.

Maybe with the amazing reviews of the new olympus omd-em1 EVF we will get a next generation rx camera with one or something better built in.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

I've been with cameras for a long time, from Minolta (love its 28-70/2.8G lens) to Canon, Nikon D/SLRs and various P&S cameras. The first DSLR I bought was the Canon D30 back in the fall of 2000. Four DSLRs later, I still think the D30 was the "best" because it made me want to take pictures just to find an excuse to play with it. It took 13 years to find that feeling again, this time with a P&S, the Sony RX1.

Here are my summary on the camera: It's amazing as a camera, slightly less so as a video camcorder.

            Pro:
            1) The Zeiss Sonnar lens: I think Sonnar design is a very good compromise between sharpness/flare and contrast/bokeh. Sharp across the frame at all apertures.

            2) The senor: It's very good in dynamic range with raw files. With adjustment brush, filters you'll think that you get an image with HDR. Full frame is a great.

            3) Leaf shutter: When you have to compete with the sun, you just can't do it with planar shutter, you need a leaf shutter. The shutter is also make a very pleasant sound and is very quiet.

            4) Spot metering: The spot meter cycle is well marked and covers the flexible focus point nicely.

            5) Built: The camera is very well built. Feel very solid in hands.

            Cons:
            1) It focuses at whatever aperture you set at. If you want to focus at night with f/5.6 you may run into trouble. Open up to f/2 then it's much better. I wish there's a custom function to open aperture wide for focus (closes down just before taking picture). There's no focus tracking in picture mode.

            2) Focus point selection: There are 3 options; Full auto, center and flexible. With center selection, the focus point is too large so it's hard to know if you focus on the face or on the eye. With flexible, the focus point is about the right size. When you first switch to flexible mode, you can move the selection around with the directional wheel (which is right) but when you are already in that mode, you can't use that wheel again to move the selection. You need to re-select the focus point mode in order to use the wheel.

            3) Flash mode: The slow-sync flash mode is not right. It does not slow-sync the way we typically think what slow-sync means (meter for ambient). For example if the frame needs ISO3200 at f/2, slow –sync will drop the ISO to something like 500 which darken the background. I had to set one of the quick selection modes to limit how low the ISO can go.

            4) Battery: the battery is tiny. Buy some extra.
Over all, I'll get it again in a heartbeat. Even if Canon and Nikon came out with something similar next day, I don't see how Canon/Nikon can compete with Zeiss glass especially at the wide end.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

I am a very serious hobyist photographer, the only profesional cameras I have, have been 35mm film and view cameras. This is my first high-end digital camera, and I have puchased it after many, many months of making a big decision on what I really wanted. I certainly wanted a camera that was easy for travel and had a razor sharp lens and a full sensor. The RXI is just that--a Pocket Rocket.

I own now for a little bit more than three month, and I managed to take a considerable amount of amazing shots with it. Still learning each and every day about digital photography. I love the fact that I can take a picture in any light conditions without the use of a tripod and fiddling around. I took the camera on an amazing trip to China for three weeks and took nearly 3600 photos. The camera is amazing and it is very nice to carry around especially for travel. The lens is razor sharp and the color is wonderful.

I purchased the electronic view finder and additional batteries (3) for my trip and this worked out very well especially on the Great Wall or when photographing the Terracotta Soldiers in Xian.

              Overall superb camera.---

This camera is amazing, the quality of images is perfect. Easy to use, buttons a little to small and battery life is short. Compact to take it every where. LOVE IT.

I purchased this camera and then returned it. The problem is that, if you're shooting a lot, the battery lasts for just about 2 hours and forty-five minutes, or about 200 +/- frames. So, you need to have at least 3 extra batteries. That's another $120+. But the problem here is that there's no external charger. You have to charge the battery in the camera. For me, given the price and quality of the camer, this is an unacceptable flaw. I hope that Sony gets this problem worked out.

I have owned other full frame cameras ( Nikon D4 and Leica M9). This RX1 is my go to camera, super sharp image from an amazing full frame sensor. The image from this little guy is on par or even better than my D4 and M9.
The only complaints will be battery life and focus speed.

This is my first decent digital camera, and I have puchased it because it was similar in philosophy with my favorite film camera (practika super TL with zeiss flektogon lens)

The only thing I would love to have is to have manual focus with focus distances engraved on lens. This way I could manually set the focus without looking at the lcd...

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Full Frame Compact Digital Camera:

We've now had the Rx1 for 3 months and 1400 exposures. We have used it as a tourist camera and for landscape and street photography.
Handled correctly the camera produces excellent picture quality. I've however noticed that I'm shooting it like a compact camera more than a camera. Auto ISO and P mode is where most of the pictures are shot. This is not the right was to use it. I think the reason this happens is that I normally shoot Canon 7D and the Sony user interface is not familiar to me.
Compared to the 7D I get a little bit less keepers. I think this is due to my behaviour mentioned above. Apart from the size, the best thing is the dynamic range in the raw-files. It's possible to bring things out of shadows and highlights like with no other camera I've had.
If you have the money to spend and have use for the size advantage I defently recommend getting the Rx1.

Photography is a hobby for me and this is not my first full frame camera. I have to say that the picture quality is just as good as the Canon 5D3 and Nikon D600. Only negative is the fixed lens if you can call a Zeiss lens a negative. That said it helps you develop your photographic capabilities. Autofocus may not be as quick and there is no EVF but you can work around those things. It definitely is not a sports camera. But otherwise it's compactness, picture quality and portability is definitely worth the purchase. I have no regrets and will be keeping this camera for a very long time.
