I would consider myself an amateur photographer with Pro ambitions. I did a lot of research before I got into the 'game' and borrowed friends DLSR's to see if I was going to go with Nikon or Canon. Since I didn't have a stable of lenses I wasn't trapped into sticking with a certain brand. Around that time Sony had announced the A77 and without having seen or used the camera I became enamored with it. I purchased that camera the day if came out and absolutely love it.

When the A99 was announced I once again was very interested, but I had two concerns - 1) the price and 2) would it be much of an upgrade over my A77. After having used the A99 now for the past 2 months, I can honestly say 1) it's worth the money and 2) it is a big improvement over the A77.

The image quality is outstanding! The ergonomics are stellar. It's a pretty lightweight Full Frame camera compared to others and it just feels right in my hands. I'm a HUGE fan of the EVF. I don't think I could ever go back to an OVF. I use the focus peaking feature all the time and it really makes for some super sharp shots. Being able to review the images instantly in the viewfinder is a big plus that allows me to keep the shot framed up for the next image. I actually think that the EVF has made me understand aperture/shutter speed/ and ISO much more than a traditional DSLR because I can instantly see the effects of what will happen to my image when i start to adjust those settings - Remarkable! Biggest WOW feature - Dynamic Range!! Sometimes you look at a photo and think that heavy shaded area is just flat black, but then you start playing around with the image in post and realize there's so much detail in the shade or dark areas. You can pull a beauty out of what you might have originally thought was a lost image - unreal.

Price - again I look at it like this. The A99 isn't cheap, but it's less expensive than the D800 and 5D MkIII. Plus there are images that I have been able to get with this camera that I would describe as priceless to me. Without this camera I don't think I would have been able to capture those moments and therefore I'd gladly pay the $$.

I have been a faitfull Sony user for the past 11 years. I have the A100, A550, A55, A77, A850 and the A99. Sony needs to address this camera syncing with studio strobes. Very erratic with shutter speeds above 125. Also the intelligent preview found in the A850 and A900 is essential in studio environment. In live preview mode you cannot trigger your strobes and therefore cannot preview the results. A plus over any other model.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This is a fantastic camera for the money. I upgraded from the A77 crop sensor to this A99 full frame and I am kicking myself for not doing it 2 years ago. The quality of image with the 24-70Z lens is just amazing even in low light. A camera I will be sticking with for many years I think.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This camera is an amazing addition/investment for my business. Although it does take some time to get accommodated to the many capabilities it has, once you learn it will give you limitless capabilities in the images you capture. The full Frame Censor gives my images clear, crisp detail. I was hoping I could push the ISO a bit higher without seeing grain, but nonetheless this is a beautiful camera.

An excellent addition to the Sonly line of DSLRs, the A99 has performed very well so far. My only complaint is the digitial viewfinder has a lag after taking a photo that occasionally makes it difficult to track the action.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

At this point in time I'm still in the learning stage but, so far, I love this camera - my first DSLR. Before the A99 I had a Sony "bridge" camera - the DSC-HX100V.I enhanced my A99 purchase with two CZ lenses and the product specific book by David D. Busch. How one could make do with the instruction manual from Sony is beyond me.My wife and I are retired and we like to travel. Usually we travel independently and I look forward to taking the time to set up really great shots where I can apply what I have learned in my reading. When we travel with groups, falling back on the AUTO mode so as not to hold up the tour is just fine - it is fast and accurate. Perhaps I'll get to the point where shooting in A, S or M just comes natural!Because of dollar considerations I first looked at the A77 V2 but I really love the GPS feature and the A77 V2 did not have it. I also felt that if I was going to take the plunge I wanted a full-frame sensor. So far, I've taken hundreds of shots - most of which are not keepers but simply "compare and learn" examples. But several are just (IMHO) stunning: a butterfly closeup in the back yard, sunset at the beach, wildlife eating my plants, visiting friends and downtown Chicago street scenes. The Sony menu system is almost second hand for me. It is intuitive and easy to learn. I'm to the point where I can use the many controls (drive mode, ISO, exposure) without fumbling around. I love the viewfinder and the LCD is awesome. Perhaps this is true of all DSLR cameras but I love the fact that you can turn the LCD around towards the camera and protect it.In manual mode and manual focus, I like the yellow (my choice of color) highlights of focused areas. A first for me was the ability to compose a shot in manual mode and have it turn out better than what the AUTO mode gave me!95% of the time I am using the CZ 16-35 f/2.8 lens which, at first, surprised me. Like many folks in the point-and-shoot world I used zoom to get in the action. Now I need to get up close and personal for my shots and I'm very pleased with the results - my perspective, how I highlight the subject, my close-ups, etc. are much different and, I think, much better using this lens.Although I have taken some short videos (which are incredibly sharp and crisp) I have not used it extensively. So far, what I have seen is impressive. If there is one "con" that I have found with this camera it is the battery life. That said, I keep the GPS on and I am constantly experimenting. Perhaps when my use of the camera matures battery life will improve. All in all, I think I made a great choice and I'm quite pleased with my selections and purchase. Also, B+H is a great place to do business with and I'll continue to shop here.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Sold myself short and bought an a77 early this spring. I tried it out and it just didn't improve enough over the a700 did justify the cost. So I returned to B&H (very, very smooth return, thank you, B&H, and a couple of weeks later, ordered the a99. This is a phenomenal camera. I love that my Minolta lenses can be used FF, images are sharp, controls are intuitive and much improved after a few generations of Sony DSLR bodies (I know, it's an SLT). Autofocus is very fast and reliable, the body feels great, especially with the included grip (thanks again, B&H!). You can load 3 batteries and shoot forever. I was worried about the battery life. Sure, not as long as the a700, which is absurdly efficient, but this camera is doing so much more. It still has yet to be an issue. I find low light images very usable to about ISO 5k. Turns out, though, if you are printing, you can go further than that for good images. Sometimes I shoot RAW and JPeg, sometimes just JPEG...I've been very pleased with the jpeg engine on this thing. If you're leaning, you'll enjoy this camera a lot. Not cheap, but this is a really well made camera...rugged, smartly laid-out, fun to use, and great images. I'm really have fun now!

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I just purchased sony's SLT A99. What a great upgrade for me. I am an amatuer photographer. Having Sony camera's for years and the most recent in being an SLTA55 this full frame camera is a tremendous up grade. I went into B&H with the idea of purchasing Nikon's D610. It seems Nikon and Cannon have the corner on the market for pro photographers. Well I did not like or understand the Nikon and lioked at the Sony A99. Having been so familiar with a electronic view finder and the SLT format there was no comparrison for me. It had to be the Sony.It takes fabulous pictures and was very easy to use.I would recommend this A99 to all amateur and some pro photographers.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased this camera because it has a higher resolution and ISO than my older cameras, which are becoming less reliable, while using the lenses I own. I am using this camera for a number of photography projects including macro, scenic, artistic, HDR, and long-exposure. I was able to use it right out of the box in P, A, S, and M modes with minimal setup. To do more advanced photography, however, there is a significant learning curve. Many of the functions I need are accessible only through menus, so if a situation changes suddenly I find I miss it fumbling through the menus. My older cameras use dials which I find quicker to access and adjust. That being said, the quality and resolution is great, I am finding I like seeing in the viewfinder the picture I just took. A camera this complex takes a while to get used to.

At the R/C club they figer out, i snap some good pictures with my old point and shooter. So I got to use other peoples DSLR camers there.ps if you think photography is pricey, try R/C helicopters .I got to use this camera.Oh boy did i like it ! Taking pictures of R/C helicopters. they zip around fast in any direction.hard to keep camera pointed at it. let alone getting it in focus. The A99 with Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G was spot on with A/F. i was sold on it. But my genral use of a camera is bugs, birds, trees, flowers, landscapes, you bet and people. To be honest i cant just take one picture. Its set to take 6 on the first user setting . i view my pictures from my pc. on a 55 HDTV i can clearly see how well the focus is.i use the hdmi cable directly some times. 90% of the time i use the view finder.it is sharp and crip . the first time i used it. i closed the rear 3.0" LCD it only open it is when making settings change.or when i dont feel like bending over.come's in handy then . im thinking what i dont like about it? looks at credit card still happy!

          Nice camera

          By Diana

          from New England

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I was looking to upgrade from my very old and outdated Minolta 7D and Sony was my only option unless I wanted to invest in all new lenses. I chose the a99 because i wanted a full frame sensor and would likely use all the capabilities of the camera with the exception of video. it would be nice to see sony put a full frame sensor in say the a77, but i use manual exposure controls 99% of the time so will use all of the features of the a99. the only two things to date that i am disappointed in are thst the a99 does not seem to work with wireless flash control with my minolta 5600HS flashes - but not a major issue since i rarely use flash. the other is that the metadata doesnt record the lens info, but again - expected since my lenses are older. I just need to keep a log like i used to. That being said, I find that the Sony,s exposure is more accurate than my 7D and my first shots ended up being slightly over exposed due to my habit of needing to adjust my 7D up by around 1/3 stop. It's also a bit larger too. Being a petit female with small hands, the body while not uncomfortably large, is a bit of a handful so to speak. The weight is acceptable and does not bother me. The controls are similar to the 7D so very little in the way of a learning curve. I like the adjustable LCD screen on the back as I do a lot of macro shots and the adjustable screen helps so that I have my head on the ground or in the leaves a little less these days looking through a viewfinder. I don't prefer electronic over optical or optical over electronic. Each has its own nuances, positives and negatives and I just accept them for what they are. To date I have only taken around 500 shots. I recharged the battery after about 350 but it wasn't fully exhausted. So far the camera has performed exceptionally with beautiful images. I import them into LR5 and my very old CS2 easily. I'm looking forward to getting back into my hobby with this camera.

          Simply the best

          By Matt

          from Exeter, NH

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

First, like Mattman, I am coming from a 2007 Sony A700. Also, I bought the bundle camera body, grip, flash. The body is rugged but lightweight so on a walkabout you won't have cramps in your right hand or neck. The features for stills and for video are so rich I recommend Gary Friedman's A99 ebook because if you are new to Sony, this is the best starting book (although he assumes someone buying this level camera in Sony has probably experienced Sony menus before). Nonetheless, the control interface really isn't difficult and the fun of learning what this camera can do for you while you focus on the really important points of light and composition is impressive. The flash is Sony's top model and just as feature rich. I do miss a dedicated on-camera popup flash to trigger (via IR) off camera flashes wirelessly. Let's be hens there...popup flash is great for quick snapshots but is really useful for basic off-camera flash sync shooting, so not having one is Sony's way of saying 'we follow Canikon in our pro lines.' Big mistake. The camera finally, at least, uses the industry standard hot shoe interface (along with Sony special contacts for microphones, etc.). This means you could use other brand flashes to trigger the 60 as an off-camera light source. The vertical grip is most important just to carry two more batteries for power. The portrait shooting is certainly its original purpose but the grip is now redesigned from the A700/850/900 era models in that you can keep one battery in the body, giving you a total of 3 batteries in play. Plus, the camera/grip combo is smart enough to drain the grip batteries first! For the combo, at 18-24 months of age, shop widely. If you are starting out, consider the just releases A77M2 or the original A77. If you are trying to conserve space in your camera bag, go with Sony's A7 or A7r. But make no mistake...the A99 is the flagship and perfectly able at 24MP full-frame sensor to help you create WOW

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

It's a been a long journey to get to this camera. I don't have a lot of disposable income, so I first tried upgrading my a700 with an a77, which didn't seem to be enough of a leap. Fortunately, my wife made it clear I should get the camera I want, because I was going to 'have it for a while', so I gulped and hit the purchase key with B&H. Btw, B&H was speedy and took my a77 back with zero hassle, so I didn't hesitate to buy from them again. I love everything about the a77s controls, and the a99s are very similar, yet a like the slightly larger size better. Most importantly, the image quality, the auto ISO and WB rarely let me down in my 1+ week of shooting...and I've shot a lot of frames. Some of my older Minolta lenses do hunt at times, but those full frames made for digital respond to focus at blazing speed and amazing accuracy. The low-light performance is also miles ahead of my a700 and well-ahead of the a77. Best of all, I can use a 50mm lens again for something other than portraits! I've already received a lot of compliments on landscapes and the overall performance of the camera at capturing vivid color and brilliant detail. It's only been a week and I love this camera!

I'm not a professional, but I require sharp, detailed photos to use for my watercolor painting. The combo of Minolta, Sony and Zeiss mounted to the a99 does everything I could hope for. The shots that I get are incredible.
I get stabilization with my old and new lenses and also get the great brokeh that i desire.

I have not used the camera extensively as yet. However so far I like the extended features. The learning curve is fairly steep but manageable. The camera has a good feel and all of the controls are within easy reach and are comfortable. I believe this product will serve my needs well.

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought this camera for it's video capabilities. I work for a local television station and one of our departments bought this camera to produce promos that air on our channel on a regular basis. Another department responsible for producing commercial content for our channel as well as other stations in the market, "borrows" the a99 for their shoots. Knowing this and not being attached to either Canon or Nikon as far as lenses were concerned, I decided to buy the a99.
I'm not a photographer so the evf doesn't bug me. I wanted to shoot some video with this camera, but when it arrived I became very interested in still photography(new Grandson). At this price point: Canon, Nikon, Sony... as a friend of mine put it so well: "They're all just a different type of awesome". So far, I'm riding a huge learning curve (NOT the a99's fault...my own lack of photography and videography knowledge)and loving it every step of the way. So far the stills I've taken look amazing and the limited video I've shot shows a very different look compared to other video-first dedicated cameras. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I'd say this camera is great.

I've have allways used sony cameras they are excelent, but the A99 is absolutly awesom...
I'm a professional photographer and I'm very please with the feel and the weight of the camera, the translucent mirror technology is actualy pretty good, is the evolution of DSRL cameras and we have to adapt!!! Just Love it!!!!

the only thing that I dislike is the Shoulder Strap, it is more like a promotional banner, and not too confortable....

Comments about Sony Alpha a99 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I recently upgraded to the A99 from the A77 and have found some things that I absolutely love about it and some things I'm not thrilled with.
The biggest reason I went to the a99 was for improved high iso performance, which it excells at. I was able to take a picture at iso 26,500 in raw and with a little noise reduction in lightroom, it was very useable. I love the layout of the camera and how it feels in my hand. I love the fact that they finally went with a standard hotshoe which means I no longer have to have adapters for my flash triggers. The video quality is amazing and I love the silent control dial on the front to adjust volume during video capture. I really like that when using the external battery grip, I can put 3 batteries in the camera, which means absolutely no battery changes during a full wedding day of shooting.
As far as things I don't like, even though it claims to have a flash sync speed of 1/250th, it really is only about 1/160th. Anything above that and it starts darkening on the top edge. I was a little bummed to find out that the focus points are so clustered in the middle of the frame. The a77's where somewhat in the center, but the a99 is even more so because of the full frame sensore. When you use an apsc lens, they actually appear larger on the viewfinder because it is cropping part of the sensor to work with those lenses. The shutter seems a little louder than the a77, but I guess that is because it is larger as well. it's still not bad though and way better than a big mirror slapping up and down. I do wish it had a few more trick that it could do, like double exposure and such. I know it can be done in photoshop, but it would be nice to be able to do it in camera. I also wish that the dual autofocus system would work with other lenses that just the few sony lenses. I pretty much shoot with Sigma lenses and it doesn't work with any of them which is a shame.
I am happy with it overall and I'm much more confident using it in low light situations than I ever was with the a77.
