I've been a pentax user for about 8 years now.I needed a camera body which was weather sealed, as I worked for Royal Caribbean as an onboard technician, and I knew I would be taking a lot of photos either on the deck of the ship or perhaps a sandy beach every once and a while.I started with a k10d and a single "modern" lens a tamron 18-250, then upgraded to a k20d body and kept that same lens for a few years. Rather than upgrade to the k7, k-r, k-x, k-5,or k-30 when they came out, instead I started investing in better lenses and some flashes. I obtained the DA* 16-50mm 2.8, a D-FA 100mm Macro 2.8 WR, and a 50mm 1.4 Pentax prime for lenses.I also got the AF160 ring flash for the 100mm macro, as well as the pentax 540 and 360 flashes. All of that gear is the reason why I never upgraded from my k20d body, It was good enough for my needs, and it was too expensive to think of upgrading after the money I spent on other pentax items. With that said, I thought the k20d was an excellent camera. It was my workhorse for many years and the only true complaint I had was low light performance was a little lacking, and sometimes auto focus would hunt with the macro lens, which is still screw driven, and has no "travel limiter" to keep it from extending in and out all the way. When the announcement came out for the k5ii and k5iis bodies, I thought, now may be the time to buy a used or even new k-5 classic, because of the price drop. But, after much thinking, i decided I would take the leap of faith and jump straight to the k5iis. I sold my k20d Body, battery grip, and my original tamron lens on [*], and put the money towards the k5iis.After I placed my order with B&H photo, It arrived from the next day with standard UPS shipping! (I'm located in northern NY state), which was a nice surprise! My first impression of it right out of the box and it was an incredible improvement over the k20d, which I had been using almost daily in the weeks before I sold it. (11,676 shutter count on my k20 by the way)The LCD screen was such a huge improvement on the k5iis over the k20d. Even though i didn't have the k20 to compare to the k5iis, there was no need. I had been looking at the k20d screen after taking shots for years, and I had gotten used to it being slightly low res, and knowing that my photos would look better once viewed on a laptop.the K5iis LCD screen, which is supposedly an improvement over the k5, (which i cannot speak for because I never saw in person)...well, it's so sharp i can practically go pixel peeping right on the screen and know for sure if the whole shot was in focus. For iphone owners like me, it was like the difference between an original iphone screen and the iphone with retina display screen... i mean seriously clear. After my amazement of that wore of, I noticed and appreciated the slightly smaller and different body design. I liked the changes made to the SD card slot, which opens easier than the k20d sd card slot did. I liked the dedicated ISO button, and the dedicated live view button, although I rarely use live view for shooting.I am very impressed with the menu system on the k5iis vs the k20d... it's a huge improvement and allows quick changes practically on the fly without having to dig through many menus and sub menus to switch options on and off.One thing I miss, however, is a dedicated "Shake reduction" on off switch. Perhaps there is a way to dedicate a button to that function but... it's something I leave on most of the time except when i tripod shoot, obviously.Picture quality? It goes without saying the k5iis blows the k20d out of the water. Low light performance and focusing is everything I want it to be. I can't imagine it being much better... ESPECIALLY for the money. I spent less than [$] with tax and shipping so, I am very pleased with the performance and Image quality for the money. Colors appear more vivid than the k20, edges sharper, and the over all level of detail is just incredible when viewed at 100% crop. When I shoot macro, I really feel like the k5iis does my macro equipment much better justice than the k20d could do as far as sheer level of detail.I'm not the best person for writing a detailed in depth image quality review, but [*] has test shots for the k5iis out now, and i suggest going there or another professional camera review site. One thing that I wish it had was support for the faster SDXC card speeds. UHS-1. I don't have a specific need for it nor do i feel like my write speed is to slow with a Sandisk extreme 3 30mb/s 4gb card... but... it would have been nice to add that capability to a camera of this cost when others in this range support that feature. Again, when taking videos or shots, it still seems faster than my k20d, and I have nothing else to compare it to, so... look to other review sites for specific details on read/write speeds. I have not had any real world shooting problems with the rumored "moire'" that it's supposed to be prone to, due to the removal of the AA filter....Again, there are other websites dedicated to that type of testing that you should check out if you're worried about it... But it's not been an issue for me.All in all, I'm very glad I spent the extra [$] on a new k5iis than on a new or used k5. Selling my old camera body and some other of my lesser used equipment helped offset the cost, but... I have no regrets about buying it.It's a tool that i'll be using every day for the next several years... and IF pentax comes out with a full frame, i'll consider selling this but... only if they have the glass to go with it.I'm a very happy customer. And I'll be sticking with pentax for a while, rather than "jumping ship" and going to canon or nikon just because pentax isn't full frame with their newest bodies.I'm not just saying that to make myself feel better about a near [$] purchase either... I truly love this camera as an upgrade over the k20d.Thanks for reading!

This is a pretty cool camera. It's a good value for the money, even though the new K-3 has been announced. The K-5 IIs is compact, but solidly built. It's not too small but more like a "baby Nikon."

I bought this because I wanted something a bit lighter and smaller than my Nikon D600, and it's all that.

But I was disappointed with the small selection of lenses offered by Pentax. I just couldn't find a wide, fast prime or zoom that I liked. I got some good shots outside, but none that I liked inside without a flash.

Perhaps I've been spoiled by the great images I get from the D600, but the Pentax photos didn't really come close.

I returned the camera and bought a Nikon D7100, with which I've been thrilled. It's more compact and lighter than the D600, but I get the same image quality I've come to like.

So, if you have Pentax lenses - this is a good value and a good buy. Otherwise, get a D7100!

Up graded from a 20D.Haven"t shot a lot with it yet. So far noise reduction is great. Shutter release is so quiet. Feels nice for a smaller body. Pics are tact sharp with lens that were not that great on the 20D. The only things I will have to get used to are no SR or bracketing switches.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I am an amateur photographer. My first new camera was a Pentax ZX-50. My first digital SLR was the Pentax K-10D. I recently replaced it with this lovely camera. The day I got it, I shot comparison shots with the K-10D and the images turned out so much better, I was giddy. It needed far less light to get a crisp picture. I'm still getting used to all the settings and have not had much time to play with it yet, but I am loving it so far. So there is your amateur review!

This camera is amazing. I love everything about it. First off, you cannot beat this price. Second, this camera takes fantastic images and is superb quality. There is nothing I do not like about it. Returned the K-50 I bought and exchanged it for this since I wanted something with a battery grip. Chose this over the K-3 as it seemed like a better buy. Haven't regretted it!

Is an excellent camera and cheap compared other semi pro aps-c brands. Has an excellent image quality, and very usefull controls. A camera you may consideer (or the K-3)if you want a excellent camera and don't want to spend a lot of money. On the downside, the Auto-Focus is not the fastest on its class and a few more focus points would be better. However 11 focus point are enough for many users. With $, i think you can not buy an Aps-C Nikon/Canon camera better than the K-5 IIs at this moment.

I have iven my K10 to my son who loves it, and bought this as an upgrade to pixels. What surpirsed me was the better menus and a couple more buttons with features I had come to want most. I shoot in SV which controls the Film Speed and Shutter speed with the auto correct going to F-stop. Fast from out of the bag to getting a road side shot. After buying it I don't really long for the K-3 anymore. This one does it

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I purchased this Camera to upgrade my old K200D.
Recently tested with a Tamron 18-200 lense and it was grate. I will need to take a few pictures to edit the review and compare to my old mate.
Most of it I will use it to take sport photos (Rugby).

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

Bottom line first: This is a great camera for a novice like me, but it seems as though a "power-user" without the dough for a K3 might also be happy with it.

I've used this camera to take low-light indoor photos and outdoors on a hike and for a little close-range goose/duck photography. The low-light performance is excellent, especially after post-processing of the RAW image. Even before post-processing, however, ISO 3200 shots were surprisingly low in noise.

The camera takes very sharp, highly-detailed images, even with a cheapie 18-55mm kit (non-weather resistant) lens and "only" 16 megapixels (Perhaps the lack of a moire filter has something to do with that.). Still, the coupling of the camera with the lens benefits a lot from lens corrections in terms of sharpness-- the "need" for sharpening is most likely a function of the lens, rather than the camera. In-camera image stabilization is perhaps the "killer" feature for this camera, as you can use budget legacy lenses with it and save a little lens weight, too.

The camera is a joy to use, with buttons for the frequently-used functions and easily-navigated menus. You can customize the menus, too, in case you want quick access to certain functions. It has great grip and feels very solid. If I had one complaint, it would be that the camera lacks a tilt/swivel LCD, but at this price point, that's probably asking a lot.

Let me put it this way: my wife was reluctant to splurge on a camera above the entry-level, but once she saw the detail and sharpness of the pictures, she became as enthused as I was about it. This camera will encourage you to get out their and take some photos, just as a good-quality guitar will lead you to practice more than a plywood one.

I've read about the high ISO performance and improved AF but was blown away when i experienced first hand. I've enjoyed other Pentax DSLRs, having owned the ist DS, K20D and K100D Super prior to the K-5 iis, and while they were all great cameras, they left something to be desired when it came to AF spped/accuracy in low light and high ISO IQ. K-5 iis sets the new benchmark. And the shutter is surprisingly quiet.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I moved up from a K20-- the K5iis is better in everyway except build quality. I prefered the card slot door latch on the K20, and my fingers are to big/fat to easily remove card from K5iis. The K5iis is lighter than the K20,it has more dedicated buttons and it seems a better control layout. The K5iis is, obviously, faster in everyway than the K20.
Auto focus is fine with my Sigma 17-50 and I have not encountered any moire issues.
Could not justify the extra expense of the K3 -- some reviews have stated the through the viewfinder auto focus is not better on the K3 and the extra resolution of the K3 would not have made me any better.
I shoot landscapes, street and products -- the K5iis does a fine job.
I am glad to have moved into a semi-modern camera.

I bought this K-5IIs because my Kr had no way to lock on my blub function for night and low light shots. I got a bonus with the weather sealed body we shot in the rain and had no problems. The Raw images came out great also.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I purchased the K5iis a few weeks ago and have been very impressed so far. The OS takes a little while to get used to, but once you get the buttons figured out it is very comprehensive and user friendly. After reading many articles about the risk of moire appearing in textured areas or man made patterns I was unsure, however the user reviews were glowing and did not seem to express the same concern, so I took the plunge. After intentionally trying to create moire in several shots of patterned fabric and finding little to none at 100% crop, I've stopped worrying about it. The images from this camera are beyond excellent.

I've owned and used the original Pentax K-5 for some time now and in all respects have been extremely happy with it, but most notably with its durability and weather sealing. To that point, I just recently took a dunk from my kayak while harnessed to the K-5. The camera was completely submerged twice, under at least one-foot of water. The lens (Pentax 18-135, WR also) did not come through the event well and I've had to replace it. However, K-5 survived!

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

This has to be the best Pentax camera yet. The image quality is the greatest. The features are better than the competetion. The Canikons do not have weather resistant features, now do they?

I purchased this Pentax KIIs about 2 weeks ago, and I cant begin to tell you what a move up it was from my previous K30. The resolution without the low pass filter (denoted by the s ) has made a huge improvement in clarity and sharpness. The ISO noise is noticeably less and the colors are true and bright. This thing is built like a tank by the way. I purchased this with the DA 55-300 telephoto lens, and they are a great pair for those on a budget. B&H kicked everyone's behind on the price as well. Improvements across the board on this camera not to mention intuitive and easy to use and both the camera and lens I purchased are weather resistant models. Very very happy with this camera

I have been a long time Sony Alpha shooter. I loved the Sony for it's speed and being able to use Minolta glass that you could buy cheaply. The problem with Sony is that images are soft, but still appealing. You would always need to spend time in PP to extract the details of the image. I much rather spend time shooting versus spending hours in photoshop. I have found with the 5iis that shooting Raw+ a lot of the JPG are just stunning right out of the camera giving me that look that I seek, hard to put into words but their is something magical about shooting a picture that is that close to what I see with my eye. I am telling you that you will have some pictures that will come from your camera that will raise your heart rate and you will become lost in them. I highly recommend the old Pentax glass, my first purchase was a great copy of the Pentax-a 50 1.4 (cheap)....it is part of the magic!
