I've been a pentax user for about 8 years now.I needed a camera body which was weather sealed, as I worked for Royal Caribbean as an onboard technician, and I knew I would be taking a lot of photos either on the deck of the ship or perhaps a sandy beach every once and a while.I started with a k10d and a single "modern" lens a tamron 18-250, then upgraded to a k20d body and kept that same lens for a few years. Rather than upgrade to the k7, k-r, k-x, k-5,or k-30 when they came out, instead I started investing in better lenses and some flashes. I obtained the DA* 16-50mm 2.8, a D-FA 100mm Macro 2.8 WR, and a 50mm 1.4 Pentax prime for lenses.I also got the AF160 ring flash for the 100mm macro, as well as the pentax 540 and 360 flashes. All of that gear is the reason why I never upgraded from my k20d body, It was good enough for my needs, and it was too expensive to think of upgrading after the money I spent on other pentax items. With that said, I thought the k20d was an excellent camera. It was my workhorse for many years and the only true complaint I had was low light performance was a little lacking, and sometimes auto focus would hunt with the macro lens, which is still screw driven, and has no "travel limiter" to keep it from extending in and out all the way. When the announcement came out for the k5ii and k5iis bodies, I thought, now may be the time to buy a used or even new k-5 classic, because of the price drop. But, after much thinking, i decided I would take the leap of faith and jump straight to the k5iis. I sold my k20d Body, battery grip, and my original tamron lens on [*], and put the money towards the k5iis.After I placed my order with B&H photo, It arrived from the next day with standard UPS shipping! (I'm located in northern NY state), which was a nice surprise! My first impression of it right out of the box and it was an incredible improvement over the k20d, which I had been using almost daily in the weeks before I sold it. (11,676 shutter count on my k20 by the way)The LCD screen was such a huge improvement on the k5iis over the k20d. Even though i didn't have the k20 to compare to the k5iis, there was no need. I had been looking at the k20d screen after taking shots for years, and I had gotten used to it being slightly low res, and knowing that my photos would look better once viewed on a laptop.the K5iis LCD screen, which is supposedly an improvement over the k5, (which i cannot speak for because I never saw in person)...well, it's so sharp i can practically go pixel peeping right on the screen and know for sure if the whole shot was in focus. For iphone owners like me, it was like the difference between an original iphone screen and the iphone with retina display screen... i mean seriously clear. After my amazement of that wore of, I noticed and appreciated the slightly smaller and different body design. I liked the changes made to the SD card slot, which opens easier than the k20d sd card slot did. I liked the dedicated ISO button, and the dedicated live view button, although I rarely use live view for shooting.I am very impressed with the menu system on the k5iis vs the k20d... it's a huge improvement and allows quick changes practically on the fly without having to dig through many menus and sub menus to switch options on and off.One thing I miss, however, is a dedicated "Shake reduction" on off switch. Perhaps there is a way to dedicate a button to that function but... it's something I leave on most of the time except when i tripod shoot, obviously.Picture quality? It goes without saying the k5iis blows the k20d out of the water. Low light performance and focusing is everything I want it to be. I can't imagine it being much better... ESPECIALLY for the money. I spent less than [$] with tax and shipping so, I am very pleased with the performance and Image quality for the money. Colors appear more vivid than the k20, edges sharper, and the over all level of detail is just incredible when viewed at 100% crop. When I shoot macro, I really feel like the k5iis does my macro equipment much better justice than the k20d could do as far as sheer level of detail.I'm not the best person for writing a detailed in depth image quality review, but [*] has test shots for the k5iis out now, and i suggest going there or another professional camera review site. One thing that I wish it had was support for the faster SDXC card speeds. UHS-1. I don't have a specific need for it nor do i feel like my write speed is to slow with a Sandisk extreme 3 30mb/s 4gb card... but... it would have been nice to add that capability to a camera of this cost when others in this range support that feature. Again, when taking videos or shots, it still seems faster than my k20d, and I have nothing else to compare it to, so... look to other review sites for specific details on read/write speeds. I have not had any real world shooting problems with the rumored "moire'" that it's supposed to be prone to, due to the removal of the AA filter....Again, there are other websites dedicated to that type of testing that you should check out if you're worried about it... But it's not been an issue for me.All in all, I'm very glad I spent the extra [$] on a new k5iis than on a new or used k5. Selling my old camera body and some other of my lesser used equipment helped offset the cost, but... I have no regrets about buying it.It's a tool that i'll be using every day for the next several years... and IF pentax comes out with a full frame, i'll consider selling this but... only if they have the glass to go with it.I'm a very happy customer. And I'll be sticking with pentax for a while, rather than "jumping ship" and going to canon or nikon just because pentax isn't full frame with their newest bodies.I'm not just saying that to make myself feel better about a near [$] purchase either... I truly love this camera as an upgrade over the k20d.Thanks for reading!

This is a pretty cool camera. It's a good value for the money, even though the new K-3 has been announced. The K-5 IIs is compact, but solidly built. It's not too small but more like a "baby Nikon."

I bought this because I wanted something a bit lighter and smaller than my Nikon D600, and it's all that.

But I was disappointed with the small selection of lenses offered by Pentax. I just couldn't find a wide, fast prime or zoom that I liked. I got some good shots outside, but none that I liked inside without a flash.

Perhaps I've been spoiled by the great images I get from the D600, but the Pentax photos didn't really come close.

I returned the camera and bought a Nikon D7100, with which I've been thrilled. It's more compact and lighter than the D600, but I get the same image quality I've come to like.

So, if you have Pentax lenses - this is a good value and a good buy. Otherwise, get a D7100!

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I already own this camera and have been using it for nearly 2 years. I purchased a second one due to the discounted price. I cannot recommend a finer APS-C camera. Weather protected body, durable, great ergonomics. The best part about this camera is that it has shake reduction built into the body so you can utilize it on legacy lenses. This not only allows Pentax lenses to sell for much less than their counterparts, but allows you to use 30+ year old lenses with ease. There is nothing negative about this camera, and with the price, there was no way I could pass up buying a second one.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I bought this to replace a stolen K10D, all of whose complexities I still hadn't figured out. Good luck to its new owner in southern Africe! The K-5 IIs seems a little easier to use, and thus far the results are terrific. Had the non-"S" version been available, I would have taken it, but this one seems fine, and I've not had trouble with lighting issues. I've never had a better camera, and it's a bargain to boot.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

There a several reasons I am very Happy with the K5 iis but the most overwhelming one was when I discovered that the finding by other reviewers that this baby focuses in almost total darkness is indeed true. All my old slow autofocus lens have now found new life.
Sharpness and color rendition are simply stunning. My old k5, which is still in repair will most likely never get used again.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

After 20 years as a artist, creative director and producer, I'm currently building a new solo business as a photographer. I specialize in fine art, macro and product photography. My legacy gear is Pentax and it seemed to make sense to leverage those lenses etc some of which are quite decent so I opted for the K5IIs. It's early days but the camera feels great, the images I'm already pulling are excellent and it has all the features I need. The body feels very solid and well made and is comfortable to use.For the current price it's got to be one the best value for money propositions out there if you already have pentax glass. That and the lack of the low pass were the tipping points for me, I just couldn't pass the deal up.All in all I'm very happy with the camera and look forward to getting more and more out of it as I get more familiar with what it can do.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

This is one of the best APS-C cameras on the market, and with current pricing probably the best value there is. Really impressive IQ especially for nature/landscape shots where moire is non-existent. 16MPix is perfect for large prints yet keeps the noise at reasonable level compared to denser sensors. Weather sealing is a great feature that makes me less nervous when shooting outdoors in rain.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I owned a Ricoh KR-S Super from 1989-1998 when I switched to Canon, so I'm already familiar with Ricoh/Pentax. I needed to upgrade lighter than my Canon 50D but still rugged enough for inclement weather, capture actions shots, take an occasional bump and continue working. The Pentax K-5II's fits the bill, extremely light weight, excellent battery life (I charged it six days ago, shot with it for three days and it still has a full charge).Although, you won't find a wide range of lenses for this system, they will have one or two that will fit whatever shots you have in mind. The third party lenses are just as good if not better than some of the Pentax lenses except the weather resistant ones.Extremely good in low light, excellent battery life and lightweight. If you add the battery grip it's still lighter than the competitors with or without the grip.

I use this camera primarily for outdoor landscape and macro photography. Its light weight and weather sealed features make it great for outdoor work in any conditions. Its image processor is much improved over my previous K5 model. Image quality is excellent up to about ISO 800, but gets a bit noisy thereafter, limiting its low light photography capability.

I have been using Pentax DSLR for a few years now for nature, sports and family events. The K-5iis replaces an older K-5 I used and the image quality is even better due to the removal of the AA filter. Low light focus on this version is much better than on the K-5. The features I value most are ergonomics, weather sealing and backward compatibility with old manual lenses as well as the in body shake reduction.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

Having had to sell my old camera some 25yrs ago to make rent, I have been kicking myself ever since. I have been wanting to get back into photography but as an old film guy was apprehensive to the loss of control that the digital world presented. Boy was I wrong! I picked up a used manual focus 50 to learn my way around the controls etc. and the images are amazing. I added an 18-55 to experiment with zoom and autofocus and again I found this camera to live up to everything that I had found in the reviews. Amazing picture quality and sharpness I could only get from very slow film. I could now shoot in light levels that were unheard of in my days of film. As I continue to explore the boundaries of this camera system I find it very much up to the task. From the little things like ergonomics to the ability to make the print big enough that I don't need my readers to see, Pentax did a great job of producing a high end camera system for the regular guy that finds his creative outlet through the lens of a camera. I was tossed between the K-50 and this one but with the price reductions combined with the additional durability it was hard not to go the step up. If your looking for something to shoot the world around you you can't go wrong with this system.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

Coming from K200D, when I first had this camera in my hands, I just felt the serious weight inside the shell of this thing. I think this could take abuse from any pro. This is like a quantum leap for me in terms of improvement from the K200D.The AF is very decisive and the screw drive got plenty of torque in it, I just could feel the kick when it drives the series F lenses I have that got me worried at first, but heck, this is a robust F lens and Pentax engineers for sure considered the power of the screw drive before implementing it in the K5 family or higher.Image wise, again a very huge improvement especially in low light. All the things I like in the K200D is still here with more additions. This camera I think was designed to be used and not to be displayed, a serious tool if you can't afford the K3

Handles very well with easy to use menus many of which are operated by dedicated buttons.Fully weather and cold proof as proven in the recent showers. The neck strap supplied is rather flimsy and has no padding at the neck. Being a relatively newer release and an upgrade to the K-5 it lacks the Focus Peaking utility found in cheaper Pentax cameras and other DSLRs.Finally a tilting LCD design would have added to the versatility of this other wise great camera.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

This camera is hard to beat, especially at B&H's sale price, and quite a step up from my previous camera - a K-7. Much less noise at high ISO ranges, much sharper especially when cropped or when viewing on a computer at 100%. Using the same lenses it seems much faster to focus and low light conditions, such as indoors, are much less likely to confuse the AF. Pentax DLSR cameras have always occupied a peculiar niche between enthusiast and pro level feature sets, and this camera is no exception. The menues may be daughnting to the beginner, but you can safely use the "green" mode until you learn your way around the camera. It took me about 30 sec. to set up a 5 exposure HDR bracket shot the other day, and now I reprogrammed the Raw button so that I can access EV bracketing with one button! Now if the weather would just get out of the single digit temperatures I could get outside an enjoy my new Pentax!

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

THis gear is outstanding, except that I had some annoying hot pixels defect withing the sensor. That is not a big problem as it can be corrected with pixel mapping withing the camera itself.

Comments about Pentax K-5 IIs Digital SLR Camera:

I'm a pro shooter and look at value. In it's price range, I'm convinced this camera is a notch above comparable Canon & Nikon models. The unique "no pass filter" over the sensor renders excellent image quality for an APS, coming real close to a full sensor in sharpness and detail and almost on noise level. The noise lever is great at 1600, good at 3200. The build is solid and coupled with a WR lens...it's water/splash proof! It's FPS is 7.0 and the AF is fast. My only compliant is the slow playback-review time, especially on raw after rattling off a bunch. I have not evaluated the video all that much.

Up graded from a 20D.Haven"t shot a lot with it yet. So far noise reduction is great. Shutter release is so quiet. Feels nice for a smaller body. Pics are tact sharp with lens that were not that great on the 20D. The only things I will have to get used to are no SR or bracketing switches.

I am an amateur photographer. My first new camera was a Pentax ZX-50. My first digital SLR was the Pentax K-10D. I recently replaced it with this lovely camera. The day I got it, I shot comparison shots with the K-10D and the images turned out so much better, I was giddy. It needed far less light to get a crisp picture. I'm still getting used to all the settings and have not had much time to play with it yet, but I am loving it so far. So there is your amateur review!

This camera is amazing. I love everything about it. First off, you cannot beat this price. Second, this camera takes fantastic images and is superb quality. There is nothing I do not like about it. Returned the K-50 I bought and exchanged it for this since I wanted something with a battery grip. Chose this over the K-3 as it seemed like a better buy. Haven't regretted it!
