I used to lug half a dozen lenses with me, until I started using a Tamron 18-250, which I changed for a Pentax 18-250, and since last month, upgraded to the Pentax 18-270.

One very good move: I managed to change a very good lens for one even better!

I am an enthusiast, and love travelling, and decided that the best all-rounder is a 18-270 lens, where I am always prepared for whatever surprise I find - a bird far away, requiring the 270mm, or a sunset, demanding 18mm. A close-up, like a flower, or family and friends getting together: whatever your need, it is there for you, without wasting precious time to change a lens, risking to loose the moment or even getting dust on your sensor.

The perfect traveler's companion!

The 18-135 mm lens let you move focus while on automatic focus and if you want the off center point of focus you just switch to manual. Its a quick operation that the 18-270mm lens does not have. And will not have because obviously the motor in the body is not suffient to move the 270 mm lens and thus the motor in the 270 mm lens.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

So far I have only used this lens around my neighborhood and am more than pleased with the results! The photos have all been great for this type of lens. I would not use it for up close photos of insects or other tiny items but overall I am more than satisfied with the results. I have other lenses more suitable for extreme close-ups, which are much better. I see this lens as a perfect fit for scenery while traveling!

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

I take this lens with me when I travel as a replacement for 4 different lenses I used to carry; a wide angle (12-24),a 16-50,a 50-135, and 55-300. The photos are not as sharp or bright as the 16-50 and 50-135; the lens is not as wide as the 12-24. And the reach is not as long as the 55-300. But now when I go on vacation I feel comfortable just carrying one lens with me. In addition to it's versatility, the IQ of the photos is very good. It's not the best in low light, but overall I am very happy with the lens.I noticed that one reviewer complained that the lens does not have the Quick Shift feature to use the focus ring manually while in autofocus mode. I agree that Quick Shift would be a nice feature, but the Nikon version of this lens, the Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR, comes with their quick shift variation, but it does not ship with a lens hood and it cost $. That's almost $ more for a travel lens with 30mm extra reach and no hood.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

The 18-270 works with well on the K20d and K-r, although I use it mostly on my K3. It is good all-around travel lens. It is good for bird shots, but I find it most useful for close in "macro" type shots for small critters such as butterflies, moths, millipedes, etc. I can stand a good distance away (4 to 6 feet) and still get good sharp images. Sometime it seems a bit soft at very long distances, but I suspect that may be more because of dust/mist/particles in the air. I miss the fact that it's not weather resistant. In inclement weather I have to use my 18-135 lens.

This lens was purchased to replace a world weary Sigma 18-200mm zoom. A good lens but starting to show its age. Matched to a K5 II, the lens is very quiet and smooth in auto focus mode with a light manual focus ring. Zoom ring is large and easy to use but feels a bit stiff, will probably get easier with use. Test shots so far look good with no significant problems over the zoom range.

Have used the lens for a couple of month and I am very happy with my purchase. Takes a clearer picture than than the 18-135 lens that came with my K-3. Lens has a solid feel about it as well as a smooth action. Have no hesitation recommending this lens, the joy of not having to constantly switch to my 70-300 lens is worth loosing the distance. Please be aware that I am only a casual photographer and my use of the camera is basic.

Have only had the lens for a little over two weeks and taken 30+ pics. So far the pictures have been great as expected from a Pentax lens. A little hard getting used to the quiet focus motor when other lenses I have had make some noise, I will learn. I noticed the focus ring has less travel than other lenses, and would be more difficult to focus manually. But since we don't use manual much these days I don't see a real problem. The 18 to 270 mm zoom range is a big feature. Love it!

It is quite sharp for a lens with that long a zoom range and fulfills my hopes.

I have used this product on my K3-II for about 2 weeks and have seen fine results. I plan to use it in traveling in the next six months and will know more then. Thus far, I find it very sharp at all stops, stiff focus (which I personally like because it will not drift) and focuses very quickly and quietly. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and would certainly recommend it to others.

I have only had this lens for a couple of weeks, but I am very pleased with it so far. I also have the Pentax DA 18-135, and the 18-270 is definitely an upgrade. It's quiet and seems sharp to me throughout the range that I have used most: I tend to back off from the 270 endpoint a bit. Not a lightweight lens, but you can't heav everything, and I think most people won't find it cumbersome to walk around with. If I ever get a vacation, this will be the lens I take.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

This lens has outperformed both my expectations and many of the on-line reviews. Image quality, flexibility, amazingly quiet autofocus, all came together to satisfy my needs.

I firmly believe this great walking-around lens is the perfect complement to my primes that range from 15 to 35, 50, 77, 100 mm. The only downside, perhaps, is the speed that does limit working in subdued lighting. However, the price of a fast lens with such a focal length range would be prohibitive - I can learn to live with it. I love this piece of glass.

Comments about smc Pentax-DA 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 ED SDM Lens:

After a two-week trip to Alaska, in which I was hiking every day and encountering many (inconvenient) situations that required lens changing, I swore that next time, I'd have a superzoom lens on my K-3. This was the obvious choice, as the Pentax and Tamron 18 - 250 lenses are out of production. The lens focuses quickly and quietly, finds focus easily at all focal lengths, and the image quality is better than I was expecting. No, it's not very fast and it's not as sharp as a prime lens. If you need that for every shot, this lens isn't for you. But for if you're headed for a place where changing lenses constantly is going to be inconvenient, this is a good choice. If it was weather-resistant, I'd give it 5 stars.
