A must have lens in the micro 4/3rds bag

About 6 months ago I sold my Canon 5D Mark II and a complement of L glass lenses. Why? Size, weight and the arrival of its replacement--an Olympus OM-D E-M5. I shoot primarily in the outdoors of the upper Midwest, the Lake Superior basin. The weight and features of the Oly OM-D and its complement of lenses made the switch a no brainer.

This Pany zoom replaced my Canon "L" 70-200mm f4.0 lens, and I have not been disappointed. The lens is lightweight and easily fits my small shoulder bag along with the camera and the Oly 12mm and 45mm prime lenses.

I shoot a lot of landscape shots with the 35-100mm zoom range, which may seem an atypical use for a mid-range zoom. However, this zoom range helps to create a great canvas backdrop for isolating the subjects in nature and scenic views.

I have found this zoom lens to be bright and sharp through its entire zoom range. On the Oly OM-D, I turn off the lens image stabilization and rely on the 5-axis OM-D body stabilization (lens and body stabilization are not needed and do not not enhance sharpness). Center sharpness (handheld) throughout its range is fantastic. There is some fall-off at the edges, but nothing excessive.

Autofocusing is very quiet, and manual focusing is smooth and impressive.

In conclusion, this zoom is a micro four-thirds must. Its build quality, zoom range, size and performance have led to my use with a frequency beyond my initial expectations.

Any cons, oh yes, price--but, admittedly worth it for the performance delivered.

Bought this lens to go with the 12-35, which is a very good lens. This was sharp at the center, but never got sharp across the frame at any aperture. Maybe I got a bad sample, but at this price I should not have to do the QC. Returned.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I wanted a high quality professional grade zoom to use on my Olympus OM-D E-M10 and compliment my Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro. Now with just two lenses, I have an MFT focal range of 12mm to 100mm at F/2.8. The Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 is well built and light for a lens this size. The lens does not extend when zooming, so the length remains constant from 35mm to 100mm. Autofocus is fast and accurate and the image quality is first rate with nice Bokeh when wide open. If I had to find one thing to complain about, it would be that the hood is fiddly to put on when reversed for storage.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I've had this lens since it came out almost exactly two years ago. Though its reach is somewhat limited, its sharpness is unexcelled among m4/3s zoom lenses. In quality and function, it reminds me very much of my old Canon 35-100 f4L, which was my favorite tele zoom on my former 7D. The imgage quality is at least one or two notches above any of my other m4/3s zooms and very similar to my Oly 75. The construction is first class. In sum, this is a professional quality lens, easily capable of taking professional quality images. Highly recommend.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

Only had it a few weeks, but getting excellent shots in low light hockey rinks. I have yet to get outside, but I can tell it will be in its element with proper light. Still learning the vastness of the GH4's capabilities, but am extremely satisfied with output of photos & video.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

A beautiful, crisp, lightweight lens. This replaced my very heavy Olympus 35-100. Plus, the addition of the stabilizer makes the handheld shots look that much better. I wish it had a start and stop focus range instead of continuos and a hard case, but for the price and the look, it is fantastic.

Smaller, lighter, cheaper but just as sharp as the famed 70-200 by Nikon/Canon/Tamron/Sigma without the small DOF. Very sharp and great colors. The Oly in body VR/IS/OS /VC is spectacular; no need for the lens IS.

Optical is just as good as the 12-35 brother. However I am not as satisfied as with the 12-35 lens. The main reason is the OIS. When handheld, it produce some weird vibration in the footage. It does not look pleasing in video. I first thought I got a bad copy. But after tried second copy, it produce same effect. Kind disappointed of the OIS. It has no impact on photo side. But for video, it is definitely a drawback. The 12-35 has better OIS. Focus is slower than 12-35, especially at 100mm end. Also note that it is same as 12-35 that it focus by wire, so not good for rack focus in video.Don't get me wrong. It has great optical. Nice build. And it is so small and lightweight. But I feel more satisfied with the 12-35 brother. And the price is higher too. Now it is almost $....

To have a 70-200 f/2.8 equivalent lens that's so small is amazing. Image quality is also very good, although the limits of the 4/3rds sensor does affect the depth of field so it's not likely shooting on a full frame.

I finally broke down and orderd this lens. When it came I was very impressed by it's build quality, and smooth operation. I wanted a small, portable lens that could be used in relatively low light. This lens fits that perfectly.I immediately tested the lens as I always do, and was really impressed by the image quality. This lens is as good as any zoom lens I've ever owned, and that includes the legendary Olympus 50~200.This little jewel takes a back seat to no one. On the pricey side, but it just proves that you get what you pay for I guess.

As with most of the other Lumix lenses that I own, this one does not disappoint. The versatile focal range, fast focus, wide aperture, image stabilization, and quality build make this a must-have lens for any MFT kit. I use it on the GH3 for still photos and video. I have yet to find a weakness in this lens. I keep this one on one GH3 body, and the equally impressive 12-35 f/2.8 on the other GH3 body for nature and landscape work, providing everything I need.

This lens has internal focus and zoom function, which is a plus. As an editorial freelance photographer I have already shot a bit with the new lens and find it superb in sharpness, bokeh and handling. A top pro lens!

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

This fast telephoto zoom offers the highest quality available in M43 for the short to mid telephoto range. It's a pricey lens so you will want a good reason to buy it. If you can leverage the advantages of speed, convenience and superb image quality then the high cost will be worth it. If not, you can buy the Olympus 40-150 or one of the similar Panasonic zooms and spend the other thousand dollars on something else! I own, and use, several lenses within this focal length range but having it all in one lens that is exceptionally sharp and fast allows me to get shots I would otherwise miss. For me, it's a good value.

This lens is excellent wide open and the stabilizer allows it to be handheld for action shots in less light than would otherwise be possible. I use it wide open much of the time. I use this lens on my GH3 and my E-M1 bodies and it performs beautifully on both. In-lens stabilization works well on the GH3 but I find the E-M1's IBIS to be slightly better when I use that body. I always look at lens specs but in the end a really good lens stands out without any need for numbers and this is one of those lenses.

This is a fairly large and heavy lens for M43 but considering the f2.8 aperture, it is actually quite compact. The construction is VERY solid and with its weather sealing it is suitable for demanding professional use. Paired with the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 zoom (or the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 if in-lens IS is not needed) you can cover a lot of photographic situations with a couple of very high quality lenses. I also carry the Lumix 7-14 f4.0 for complete coverage on the wide end. None of these lenses is cheap but they do offer top image quality.

With f/2.8, this lens is an excellent choice for low-level light and expands the range of light conditions for use with this versatile camera. This lens also bridges tht gap between lower focal length lenses and the versatile 100-300 mm lens with its equivalent focal length of 200-600 mm. Great choice as an excellent lens, but rather pricy.

Comments about Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 Lumix G Vario Zoom Lens:

I'm primarily a videographer and I use this lens a lot on concerts, weddings, interviews, and commercial work. It's fast and sharp wide open with nice bokeh. I love the range with the 2x crop factor on my camera (it's an effective 70-200mm lens) The constant aperture is a treat. The construction feels solid. The OIS makes it easy to get sharp, in-focus shots on the go. The sharpness and color on this lens is great. I love the images it makes. I also like that the barrel doesn't extend when I use the zoom. (it's twin, the 12-35mm, which I own, has a barrel that extends when zoomed, but other than that it's nearly identical in quality and usefulness). Just about the only drawback to this lens is it has an infinity focus ring, meaning that the focus ring spins and spins endlessly without any hard stops. This makes it very hard to use with a follow focus for racking focus video shots, or for night sky long exposures (hard to know exactly where infinity focus is when shooting 30 second shutters). However, I knew that going into this deal so it's not a huge disappointment. Overall, it's a valuable lens in my kit and I'd definitely recommend it.
