I picked this up last week and have really fallen in love with this lens. It is very sharp. It is very small and exceptionally light. I also like the optional boyonet hood that Olympus milks its customers for. I like the focul range selector and the fact that the lens is weather/dust sealed.

I have had some trouble focusing in 1:1 mode but thats not the fault of the lens per se. My only real complaint is that the autofocus is slow and results in a bit of hit or miss focus of your subject. This may be the fact it is a macro lens. I usually use the autofocus to get a general focul point then hold my breath and slowly move the camera forward or backwards to get my subject in focus. Occasionally I will fine tune with the manual focus ring. I leave the focus set to S-AF/M on my OMD. The spider shots were taken with one hand on the camera and one hand on a 800 lumen flashlight to light my subject up. Check out some samples below.

This lens is very well thought of, it produces very good quality images but I it has some issues I'd like to see modified in a future version.

The limiter-1:1 button is a fantastic feature it significantly reduces "post focus hunting traumatic stress" specially when you are shooting 1:1 in low light.

The image quality is good, but it could be better. At the moment we have very high standards to compare macro lenses, but it was quite frustrating for me to confirm that the Olympus XZ-1 macro mode delivers better IQ than this lens. It has by far better sharpness and micro contrast.

It is a shame for a macro dedicated lens to be beatten by compact camera macro mode in essencial parameters for macro photography. Of course the XZ-1/2 Olympus has the best optics of the compact point-and-shoot camera's world, but I'd expect that a dedicated macro lens would be at least as sharp, and the 60mm f2.8 isn't...

I hope that olympus produces a MKII version of this lens with better sharpness, or a sharper model in the 75-80mm range.

After Reading a lot of Panasonic 45mm f2.8 macro vs Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro reviews I decided to compare them for myself. After a few dives with the Panasonic I bought one. It is sharper, has better contrast and the difraction is less destructive in small apertures. The larger DOF of the 45mm also helped when shooting 1:1 and the smaller hiperfocal distance makes it a little more usable in close subject conditions.

Another feature I'd like to see adressed is the manual focus... Although a speed sensitive rotating focus may apear a good idea it is not. It actually renders the manual focus completely unusable. On the other hand the manual focus in Panasonic is very usable.

My final word is: this lens is very capable and produces very good images, better than Sigma 70mm f2.8 (I've been using it intensivelly for a vey long time in Nikon bodies), which is a very capable lens, but the problem is the competition (Panasonic) raised the bar one notch in parameters that are significant for macrophotography.

What realy annoyed me with this lens was to confirm that the optics of a compact camera from the same brand performs better in macrofotography. Of course there are more optical chalenges associated to the bigger micro 4/3 sensor size, but, if Olympus manages to surpass these they will turn one average very good lens to a near perfect one.

I still feel divided and I'd recomend this lens to a friend, because it is very good, but if the main purpose photo scope would be completelly within the 45mm capabilities, and the price woudn't matter, I recommended the Panasonic lens instead.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

While I primarily purchased this lens for macro photography, I have discovered (probably, lots of purchasers of this lens have discovered) that it is a great portrait lens. I own the 75mm 1.8 and have used that lens mainly for portrait work. This lens allows for a closer distance between you and your subject and has a wonderful bokeh associated with it. The limiter switch is great for close up work because it positions the focus distance in a 1:1 position. Some individuals have commented that the lens searches too much when placed in auto focus mode. I have not found this to be true. The other lenses I have (pro 12-40mm 2.8/pro 7-14mm 2.8/pro 40-150mm2.8) all allow for manual focus from the lens itself. This lens does not...it has to be set by the camera. Switching this mode is not a convenient feature...which I think should be a feature at the lens level when doing macro photography. The quality of construction is excellent and all features are available because it is an Olympus lens...some other manufacturers provide limited features because they do not integrate with the Olympus system...such as image stabilization (Olympus is camera driven...not lens driven). Overall, I feel that any one purchasing this lens will not be disappointed.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

For over a year I've been using the 60mm along with the 9-18mm, 14-42mm kit, 25mm 1.8, 45mm 1.8, 40-150mm II R, and only recently the 12-40mm PRO. The 60mm is weather resistant like the pro lenses, has image quality like the 25mm and 45mm prime lenses, is great for portraits, and can shoot macro shots. If the focal length were shorter, this lens might be my favorite all around lens. It's not for everyday shooting but will not disappoint when you use it. If you can get enough distance between you and the subject it makes a great portrait lens. I wasn't a big fan of macro shooting but have become much more interested in it since using this lens. The overall image quality is right up there with the prime lenses, the F2.8 aperture provides a good balance of depth of field and shutter speed at this focal length, and the sharpness is comparable to the 45mm and 25mm primes.
The minor issues are with the focus limit switch and the focus ring sensitivity. If the focus limit switch is not set properly the auto focus has issues. Because the depth of field can be so small with close objects the focus ring requires more turning to adjust. This is great for macro shooting but less so for portrait shooting. The good news is that the auto focus works well when set properly so you can use the AF+MF for quick and adjustable focusing.
The must have accessory is the Olympus sliding lens hood. Slide it back to remove/replace the lens cap and keep it back for close up macro shots. Never having to remove the lens hood is more convenient than you'd think.
Overall, another great lens from Olympus. See the attached images for 1:1 crops from this lens on an E-M10.

I am trying to build a complete system for my new Micro 4/3 cameras. I have a Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Macro for my Canon SLRs. So this lens is what I am going to use for my macro photography and portraiture. I really love its tiny size and its light weight, and the fact that it is weather sealed. Although it is made of plastics, I think it is a nice trade off for its light weight. Performance wise, I really prefer this one than my Tamron since it focuses faster under macro mode and gives better depth of field given the nature of m4/3 systems.

I have a bunch of Oly lenses and this one is the most fun. You can use it for general photography, portraits, etc. Great for a trip to the aquarium. Very sharp. Its a really good macro lens, but does suffer from very shallow depth of field (generally true of macros). You have to get fairly close to your subject to get 1:1. It is not a high speed focus demon like the other Oly primes, but it is not bad either. Weather sealing is a bonus.

Perfect match for a Micro 4/3 system. Incredibly sharp, great focus limiter setup, light, excellent contrast. This is a really nice lens for macros, but is also a very useful portrait lens. At f/2.8 it can handle just about any portrait situation. Great bokeh.

Olympus should include the hood with the lens. Their hood is way overpriced. The Vello dedicated hood is a perfect match at a fraction the cost.

This is my first dedicated macro lense and I just love it! I have a Panasonic Lumix G7 and my only "con" about this lense is that I lose my image stabilization by using it with my camera (Panasonic image stabilization is built into their lenses, not the camera, so by using an Oly lense you lose it. The Macro lense by Panasonic was twice the money, plus the Oly lense had such fabulous reviews, so I bought the Oly.). Even so, being a macro lense, it will almost be used exclusively on a tripod, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm very impressed with how lightweight it is. I was expecting something more bulky, and was very happy to find out otherwise. As a photography student, I've not yet been able to explore all this lense can do, but from other reviews I've read, I know I'll continue to be amazed.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This is one of my favorite lenses for the OMD EM5. I bought this specifically for macro use, it was my first (and only) macro lens. But I use it for so much more now! Obviously great for bugs and flowers and other close-ups, but also good for portraits and general shooting. Fast, and sharp, I use it a lot more than I thought I would when I bought it. The dial was a bit tricky to get used to at first; and there is sometimes a bit of hunting in very low light -- but nothing terrible. I found this to be a great lens for a very good price.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

A superb macro lens, sharp at all apertures up to F8 where diffraction begins to take a toll. The focus limiter works very well for macro subjects in particular making auto focus much faster.Coupling this lens with the E-M1's focus bracketing makes for a spending kit for macro. And the small size and light weight of the lens are a bonus. The only thing to complain about is the price of the hood but it isn't an essential for macro work.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This lens provides excellent image quality when used on my Panasonic G5. There is no apparent chromatic aberration or distortion. The lens does tend to hunt a little on focusing but the focus limiting switch does an excellent job of alleviating this minor problem. The lens is light weight and balances well on the camera. I would recommend this lens without hesitation.
