I used Nikon prime lenses on all of my film cameras and remember the sharpness and shallow depth-of-field at wider apertures. Experiencing some of this again with this Nikon 1 prime lens sounded good.

I tested sharpness by taking about 100 comparison shots with this lens and the 10-30 kit zoom set to 18mm. I didn't see much difference in side by side comparisons; 100% views did show a slight edge for the prime. For most of my shooting I don't think this lens will provide noticeably sharper images than my 10-30, 30-110, or 6.7-13 lenses.

I also did some depth-of-field comparisons. The 18.5mm prime wide open does have less depth-of-field than the 10-30mm at 18mm and wide open. But the difference is not significant for subjects that are 10 feet or more distant.

Some reviews mention the f/1.8 maximum aperture is useful for low light photography. The 18.5 is not a VR lens; my Nikon 1 zooms are all VR and gain 2-3 stops "stability" in low light. So, for static subjects in low light, the prime and the 10-30 zoom can be hand held down to the same low light level. The prime will have some advantage when shooting moving subjects (sports, kids, etc.) at low light but the real advantage will be in brighter light where the f/1.8 aperture allows a faster shutter speed to stop action.

Mounting on a tripod puts the lens to best use. The lack of VR is no longer a problem and the apparent sharpness seems to improve.

Nikon makes an unusual lens hood for this lens. The HB-N101 works well for me, costs less, and has a more conventional appearance.

For me, this lens is best suited to taking portraits because the background is pleasantly out of focus. I also use it on a tripod for time lapse and low light photography.

I'm keeping it and I enjoy it.

As far as sharpness goes it is disappointing. My 10-30mm lens is definitaly and noticeably sharper.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (White):

I have had this lens for several weeks and have taken it out several times. It produces very nice images, and the large aperture allows the lens to take images in low light that the other Nikon 1 lens would not allow. Overall it is a really nice addition to anyone regularly using the Nikon 1 line of cameras.

this is a great everyday lens for the Nikon 1 J5 if you need no zoom. it's extremely light and delivers very clear and crisp images. i'm using it with the B+W XS-Pro Clear MRC-Nano 007 lens filter, and the B+W XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano filter. i'm happy to have it added it to my gear.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I wanted a faster lens for the new v3 and after reading the reviews, I settled on this one. It does a very nice job. The distortion is mild and easily corrected either in-camera (jpg) or in the computer. I have been shooting primes on my D800E for several years and find using the kit zoom to be a bit distracting. With this normal prime, I find that it works well for street work.

Because the the added depth of field due to the small sensor, I set it at f/1.8 and leave it for nearly all my shooting and I find that the DoF is more than adequate for all but the closest subjects. The kit 10-30 mm lens starts at f/3.5 so there is isn't much room to adjust the aperture with diffraction setting in past f/5.6. With this lens you have more range of aperture to explore.

A good choice for a walk-about lens. I really wanted it with a larger aperture but this is a good start.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (White):

This is the third lens that I bought for my J1 (also own the VR 10-30 mm f/3.5-5.6 and the VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6).
It expanded the capabilities of my set greatly. Because of it's high apperture you can get really shallow depth of field (compared to what you get with the other lenses) and a lot shorter exposure time in low light conditions without traidin in for higher ISO. Great for filming in super slow motion in conditions other than bright sun light and in low lit scenarios without using flash. Fixed focal length is a fair trade off. You can capture most scenes that would be suitable for a 10-30mm lens

I haven't spent a lot of time with this lens yet, but so far so good. It's a much better low light lens than the kit 10-30mm lens that came with my Nikon J1. For a casual photographer, it's easy to get a nice bokeh effect that makes your portraits pop.

I am used to using zoom lenses, so it's a little more difficult composing shots with this lens. However, overall I think it's a much better lens than the kit lens and if I could only have one, it would be this one.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I'm a believer in prime lenses. Not exclusively, but as much as possible. This is a sharp fast lens. I use it on V1. It ought to be even better on the new V3. While the kit 10-30mm zoom is pretty good the image quality with the 18.5mm is noticeably better on a large monitor or better still if you print at 8x10.

Auto focus is fast as in almost instantaneous. The 1.8 aperture lets you isolate the subject from the background better than the kit zoom.

It isn't small enough to ley you put V1 in a shirt pocket but a jacket pocket works as will the side pockets on cargo pants.

It works very well for photographing quickly in low light. The depth of field is nice and it's really good for photographing people up close.

I'm an amateur and the Lens is working really well for me, people love the photos.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

This is my second lens so I can use them on two Nikon 1 cameras that I own. my main purpose for this lens is digiscopy. The size and weight makes it a perfect choice to use with Swarovski DCBll attachment.Focusing through the scope is easy and fast. I have not used this lens for any other purposes so, I can not comment on that. If you are in to digiscopy and own a Nikon 1 Camera I highly recommend this lens. The only reason I gave a for star is it,s build quality as it feels a bit plasticky but then again that is what makes it so light.

Comments about 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I like using prime lenses sometimes although I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because it eliminates the indecision of what focal length to shoot with that often happens when using a zoom lens. Maybe it's because they're usually faster and optically better than zooms. In addition to the Nikkor 18.5mm 1.8 lens I also have the 10mm 2.8 which I also like very much. As other reviewers have noted the 18.5mm is excellent for shallow focus close up shots. It's also a good fast lens when shooting video. I also think it does very well as a portrait lens and the images could always be cropped down a bit to 70 - 75mm (35mm equivalent) for a good portrait shot without any real sacrifice in image quality at least for general picture taking purposes. Also, the on line purchasing experience from B&H was flawless with quick delivery as usual.

This lens is so light weight it makes the v1 even more portable and with the f1.8 aperture makes the camera much more versatile. This is the lens the v1 should have shipped with.
