This lens has certainly met my expectations for close-up and macro photography. Well made, good snug fit on my Nikon 7100, tack sharp, fast focus, and very quite. Evidently, the VC technology is quite effective. Very sharp images have been produced with many hand held image captures. I also tend to shoot 2 or 3 images in the continuous exposure mode to help minimize any camera shake effects as well helping not to miss the area of focus with a narrow depth of field situation. The attached images of a small dragonfly and the small banana spider (1 inch body length) wrapping a lunch were hand held exposures. With the Tamron 6 year warranty included, I felt comfortable making this purchase.

Problems:
1. Not sharp wide open, which limits use for dim light shooting and exploiting bokeh: had to stop down to f/4 to get pro-grade sharpness
2. There was enough play in the ring that precise manual focusing for macro shots was frustrating
3. There was a strange open slit built into the casing just inside the mount that would allow dust and moisture to get into the lens, so this model can't be considered weather sealed. I hope this problem is corrected in the new version as it was a deal breaker for this one. Per Tamron "a high standard of Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction has been added to prevent intrusion of dust or moisture." We'll see.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I was not surprised by the high quality of this lens, since it was rated highly by DxO labs in their testing on a Nikon D810. I compared the lens to the Nikon 200mm f/4 Macro and in a side by side on the same subject at f/16, it was as sharp as the Nikon 200mm and actually had slightly better detail after a 100% enlargement in Photoshop. The lack of chromatic aberration was also apparent, so I rank it with the Nikon as at least of equal quality. I could not compare it to a Nikon 105mm Macro, since I don't have that lens, but I am certain that this Tamron will hold its own in a side by side against that lens. All in all, a very useable lens for close up and macro and portrait. Hand holding the lens with VC engaged, f/18 @ 1/30s showed no motion blur in the photo, so I assume the VC works just fine for my purposes. I normally use a tripod, so this feature is not of particular concern to me. Nice to know it works, however.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I like this lens. I bought it to do some portrait work. My other portrait lens is the fabulous Nikon 135mm DC. I like the 90mm Tamron lens because it's a little shorter, so I can get closer to the subject and quite a bit lighter. The VC makes me more comfortable shooting hand-held. The autofocus is pretty good but the manual focus ring is large and precise--very nice. If this lens has a flaw I haven't found it yet. For me, the macro is a bonus. I have been playing with it and will use it in the future.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

            Macro. Some general shooting.

Fast focusing on my Canon 6D, excelent contrast and sharpness with a caveat below. 6 year warrantly is great, as I am using it now after one year.

However, it became clear after some time that the VC is unreliable in the one I own. I had VC off when using a tripod, and images are tack sharp. Using VC was hit and miss on non tripod shots, and a miix of macro and non macro. The VC in many cases caused a loss of sharpness, and the same shot with VC off was super sharp.

Its been returned for repair, so hopefully this will be sorted out. Otherwise love the lens.

Its a great macro lens and super sharp images.

Vibration control works great for some hand help. IF you are new to this like me some shots will get you the hang of Auto- Focus. While experts from Macro world prefer manual focus and tried some shot with that and its great.

Also smooth for Close Up Portarits and getting good results.

Tried with Nikon D600 AND d810. Although I feel the lower MegaPixels of D600/610 series will giver better results than D810. Based on what I saw with my hand-held results.

F16/22 so lot of light needed for your shots.

Got this lens last week and took it out for a spin. It fills out my lens armory perfectly. A great portrait lens and it also gets me in close for those abstract natural landscape forms that I am so fond of. It is light yet seems to be well made. It's not cheap at $ and change but I know I will get a lot of mileage from it. There seems to be a strange frame creep situation going on however when I use focus stacking techniques on manual focus. Not sure what that is about yet.

This is my first Tamaron lens and I love it. Between work and home I have access to 15 Nikon lenses and 2 Tokina wide angle zooms. This lens is easily one of my top lenses. I was going to go wth the Nikon 100 macro until I started reading the reviews. The Tamron 90 is sharp, quick, quiet, and the VC works great. No regrets.

I bought this lens because it was the top rated lens on dxomark less than $. I was surprised to learn that the aperture limit changes according to focus distance, probably becase it's an internal focusing lens? The following are aperture limits for each focusing distance:• 2.8 : inf• 3.0 : 20'• 3.2 : 3'• 3.5 : 2'• 3.8 : 1.5'• 4.5 : 1.2'• 5.0 : 1.05'• 5.6 : 0.98'This isn't an issue for me because macro lens are best at the 9-11 apertures anyway and for protrait work a 3.0 is good enough for bokeh, but this lens really shouldn't be advertised as an F2.8, anymore than a zoom lens (F4-5.6) should be advertised as a F4. Slimy omission by the marketing department at Tamron.

I bought this lens to help analyze product problems. Used on a D300, almost always on a tripod and frequently in locations requiring additional lighting (two Nikon Speedlights, reflectors.) Image authentication is almost always turned on. The results exceeded my expectations. I try to get enough light to shoot @ f/16 and will shoot a series of shots to allow me to get greater dynamic range using software. Shots are also combined for greater depth of field in the final image. Manual focus is used when on the tripod but the auto focus is good when used handheld for larger objects. It appears to be as sharp as the Nikon pro lens I have. I bought this lens @ B&H and have had it long enough to say with certainty it's a great lens.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

This Tamron 90mm f/2.8 is a very sharp lens. Perhaps the sharpest I own. But, macro's are known to be among the sharpest lenses one can buy.I like the auto focus and the vibration reduction. The grab-and-go style of the manual focus ring is nice too. The build quality seems to be as good as most of Nikon's newer offerings. The optics are every bit as good, or better than Nikon glass. The only thing that slightly dissapoints me is that it doesn't open to f/2.8 when you are focusing in macro mode. The lowest you can go is f/5.6. You only get f/2.8 at infinity. I think that should be mentioned in the advertising. It's not a "deal breaker" for me, but I do think the lens should be labeled/named as"90mm f/2.8 - 5.6 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD" and it should be explained.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I did extensive research to find a macro lens in order to attain the highest quality slide copies using my Nikon D800E. I have 40 years of Kodachromes and Ektachomes from my film days. I have paid to have several hundred scanned professionally, but was not completely happy as the high resolution scans are jpegs. At 1:1 I can see JPEG artifacts. I decided to try scanning myself with my Epson 750 scanner, but the time it takes to scan each slide is unacceptable. I needed the quality of scanning with higher speed. After extensive research, I purchased this lens, ran a number of tests to ascertain optimum aperture for the lens and to refine my copy protocol. Briefly, ISO 100, Live View, aperture priority, mirror lock up, and a 2 second shutter delay on a Kaiser copy stand over an Acculight Light Table. Also, copying the slide emulsion side up is slightly sharper than through the film base. I then imported the raw files (at 14-bit) into Lightroom 5. I am very pleased with the camera/sensor/lens lcombination. The copies have no artifact, a long dynamic range, good color and are as sharp as can be. As you can see, I'm pretty much of a perfectionist when it comes to my work. I highly recommend this lens for similar work.

One of my favorite lenses. The auto focus is so quick and silent and so sharp. An incredible lens. It even beats the quality of Nikons macro lens.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon:

I got this lens hoping it would be an affordable alternative to Nikons 105mm micro, which is quite a bit more $$. Sorry to say, the copy I got did not perform up to expectations. On my D7000, its sharpness at 1:1 was, at best, good but not great. I used it for a variety of macro shots, from flowers to wood grain patterns, glass beads, etc. None of the images I got were what I would call "tack sharp." Color was excellent, but DOF was lacking. Know that the sweet spot for this lens (like most macro lenses) is about f11-f16, and beyond that you loose all sharpness within a close up image. Maybe I got a bad copy, but it went back anyway. Think I'll stick with Nikon glass.
