This is a considerable improvement over the M9. I've had M camera's since my film days. The most improved elements of the M are; incorporation of Maestro processor, battery, ISO range, usable display, rangefinder and optional M grip. Many will greatly appreciate the live view, focus peeking, video capabilities and ability to use R lenses.

Let me first say that I own a leica x2 and love it. I received the Leica m and the 50mm f2.0 cron yesterday1/30/14. I waited 10 months on the B&H site. What a let down. It is to heavy for me. and the few shots where nice, but not that much better the the X2 for the price.

Let me say that Leica m is a thing to behold. But it was not for me. It pains me to send this back.

Also the seal on both the m and the lens box where broken. I did a sensor test and it was loaded with dust. This could have been open stock.

It is a great camera but not for me. I am 77 years old and been into photography since I was 14. I have A SpeadGrafic,4by5, Rolli 6x6, Pentax 645 Nikon f100. I love to take pictures.

I always Buy from B&H. there a great store.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

Perfect for travel, although it is heavier and thicker than the M9. The image quality is extremely high, even at the higher ISO's. The noise is acceptable at 3200 which is great when shooting after dark on the street. I am very pleased with the color rendering which is important even though I always shoot RAW. It is slower on start up than the M9 which affects reviewing pictures more than shooting pictures.
I have not used the video and probably will not.
Leica is expensive but you get great pictures and great reliability in a light weight package.
I think the battery life is excellent.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I have saved and waited a long time for this superb camera and it excedes my expectations and probably my ability. Have taken only about a thousand shots, and as I improve I intend to grow with the Camera. It is heavier than my Vario X, but with the M series I can play to my hearts content. Shooting a cron 50 and Sumi 35 and 90. All so far wonderful. For old tired eyes like mine I reccomend an evf. I have both the Olympus, works fine, but I confess to springing for the Leica, just for bragging rights and to make the outfit look well, Leica like. One thing is don't lose your hot shoe protector. Leica wants $[*] for a $.05 piece of plastic. A fine camera, best I have ever owned.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I've used film-based Leica M cameras for quite some time, and this is my first forray into the digital M. Excluding the M Monochrom for the moment, I am glad I waited for this model, as I feel it represents a big improvement over the earlier versions. Even if you do not use some of the new features, such as the movie mode, or Live View on the rear monitor, the other improvements add a great deal of value to this camera. For instance, the physical design and construction of the camera body have been improved, making for a solid, weather resistant body that feels like a (slightly) larger version of my MP. The new battery is more powerful than in previous models, and easily lasts a full day, especially if you are careful in adjusting the camera settings. The optical rangefinder was redesigned (internally--no visible changes) and offers a very bright, easy to use field of view, and the LED framelines are always highly visible. Although I mostly rely on the rangefinder, the optional EVF2 allows you to take advantage of the new focus peaking feature, that helps you nail the focus with great precision. The EVF (and the monitor) also shows you not only the exact view through the lens, but also the depth of field as well as the effect of exposure compensation before you take the photo. This camera lets you "feel" the amount of engineering and software development that preceded it. It feels like, and is, a solid, reliable professional tool, that now also offers the choice of using Leica R (and non-Leica) primes and zoom lenses. It can also be set-up as a studio camera, through the addition of the multi-function handgrip. It's simply a great camera, and demonstrates that the Leica M series has a great future ahead of it.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I am a professional photographer and have been shooting Canon all my life. This is my first Leica and camera and I love it. I started off shooting film and the Leica M reminds me of the old Canon rangefinder I used many years ago.

The simplicity of the camera's controls allows me to concentrate on the creating the photo instead of having to worry about the camera.

I have been spoiled by the 5D MkIII autofocus, so it's taken a little time to re-learn how to use the split image viewfinder. But it's a minor issue and it's a pleasure to actually control the camera.

Compared to the 5DMkIII the Leica is tiny. So I find myself taking it with me a lot more often. Plus, it is small and discrete so people don't notice that you have a camera with you. Great for street photography.

The image quality is as good if not better than my 5D MkIII. It's hard to compare directly because the Leica lenses are so good, it's not a fair comparison.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera Body (Silver):

Let me first tell you this is absolutely gorgeous camera with awesome capability of taking stunning pictures. I owned 2 SLRs for last 12 years and found I am carrying my camera (the M) more frequently and more comfortably than ever; that explains a lot. If you have a great camera but if it is difficult to carry around - the whole meaning is gone. Also these days walking with a big camera is sort of sight pollution; every Tom, Dick and Harry has an SLR and the meaningless clicking at everything and everyone made carrying around a large camera looking cheap. Leica is in rescue - giving an absolute capable lightweight small camera without getting noticed much or better only get noticed by knowledgeable folks and of course it does not pollute the sight as much the consumer SLRs do.

I bought Summilux 50mm/1.4 ASPH newest lens which is an absolutely gorgeous piece of glass. I would recommend this to anybody who wants to do street photography as well as some portraits. I never used a 50mm before but I am using this all the time as a general purpose lens which is extremely capable. Specially it sees almost in the same way our naked eyes see around which is really great. My new love for 50 mm is probably due to Leica for its great smallish Summilux as well as gorgeous small camera which allows me to carry it around easily compare to bulky SLRs. I taste in photography has changed too. My photography was more object oriented before and now more subject oriented. I used to find an object to capture and use all the technique to amplify it; now I see the whole subject that goes beyond an object and try to capture that with its context around and with that I inclined more towards the street photography style. I believe thats a good transition for me and thank Leica M to facilitate that.

Lets get to the Leica M features that matter to me. Can't talk much about its design and ergonomics as it is a legend in that department which is known to the world. The features I noticed first and liked them are:
                1) Focus peaking - thats awesome addition to a rangefinder and focusing a range finder is not easy all the time - when done right it is dead on but there are time when it is not very easy to do. The people like me coming from long SLR background may find it difficult to focus using 2 overlapping images; though I'm comfortable doing it most of the times but not always. Eye strain is another factor in focusing any camera and specially rangefinder in low light situation. Focus peaking on live view is really the saver in this.
                2) The classic look - can't say enough about it :)
                3) The black-chrome finish when couple with chrome colored lens - its just something absolutely beautiful
                4) The easy navigation. Specially the ISO change, even though I desire a dedicated button for ISO change but what it is today is great too. Keep the ISO button depressed the push up/down arrow button.
                5) Ease of taking along - most important feature is this to me. I am carrying this camera virtually everywhere unlike my SLRs. It easy to carry around due to its size and shape including the lens size and also it has that love factor - I love to carry it around.
                6) The dead accurate range-finder focusing - I am not comfortable using it in every light situation but when it can used - its is dead accurate.

                The things I didn't like:
                1) Length of Camera strap; and hey I am just 5'6". When I put the camera in my messenger bag with open flap it does not go fully in the bag due to the short length of the strap even when fully extended. Too bad.
                2) The base plate - quick access of the SD card is pain in the butt. So the battery.
                3) Recycle time - I missed few shots due to that. Sometimes the click just doesn't work even after 1 minute or 2. Is that only me?
                4) Magnification while reviewing the pictures through "play" button. It responds slow at times- very annoying.
                5) Battery life - not very long sorry can't agree with people claiming it has long enough battery life

                Debatable desire:
                1) I know Leica purist may not like it but I think a dedicated ISO knob would be useful, placement of that could be challenging but hey thats why the expensive design engineers are for right!
                2) The battery is quite large compare to the camera and it takes between 1/3rd to 1/4th of them camera body. Leica could be made slimmer with the battery in a projected enclosure acting as embedded grip. Width wise battery could be half inside and half project (enclosed).

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

It's a rangefinder so you know what the shortcomings are going in. This is a very nice camera. I have far too many cameras right now and something will have to go, but it won't be this. Fit and finish is amazing, latest firmware so none of the early issues. Paired with a 50 f2 Summicron, and its very nice. Zero issues so far.

Color is great, focusing is pretty easy except in low light, but with Live View, no issue really. High ISO performance is great. Very tight and pleasing luminance grain; I don't surpress this at all, just chrominance.

The camera is HEAVY. Freakishly so. And it's not really comfortable to hold, but hey, I knew that coming in.

Let's face it, they don't really have any competition and the handcrafted quality and precision can't be found elsewhere. This is as simple as it gets, and it's special. Yes, my D800 runs rings around in most areas, but it's also void of any real personality.

                  Battery life is stunning.

B&H service as always is amazing.

This is my second Leica M240. I got the first one the day it was released and have been writing extensively about it as well as the previous models. This time I wanted a chrome to go with the black one, and BH had it in stock so I could have it the next day by airmail.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I have a few digital Leicas (M240 and Monochrom) that I shoot with along side an extensive Fuji X system. I will compare these cameras in this review. If your on a budget the Fuji X is another good choice. The Fuji-X's image will rival the Leica M240. But when it comes to the Monochrom, the Fuji -X image is not as sharp. Now, the Monochrom is not worth the premium in price over the Fuji for sharpness. But you can still see a big difference on large prints. Maybe the Monochrom is 20% sharper. The M240 is pretty much on par with the Fuji for sharpness. Fuji has a really amazing sensor in the X cams. If Fuji made a FF 24mp sensor it woul probably equal or out-do the Nikon D800.What led me to both of systems was the option of manual controls. If Fuji had not put a shutter dial on the X cams I never would have bought one. I do a lot of zone focus shooting in dim light as well as fast street shots. In dim light or fast shooting, the Fuji AF does not work well. I don't have time to figure out the push button controls on the new school cameras created by the young gun, camera fondling engineers. The engineers keep making things more complex with more buttons and menus to screw with. By the time you screw with the buttons, the shot is gone. I am an old time film photographer and I like old school controls. Shutter speed dial, aperture ring and a focus scale on a lens. Is that asking for too much?? What I like about the M240 is the manual controls and small size body. The M240 is not as small as the Fuji, but they are close in size. The M240 is very heavy. The batteries are near $200 each. If you lose the neck strap it is $50. Everything about the Leica is crazy priced. But, if you want a manual cam rangefinder the only choice out there is the Leica…so pay up.I've lost a few shots with the slow Leica buffering on the M240. But I've also lost shots with the Fuji X and all their screwy buttons and controls. To improve the Leica use fast cards and no instant review. Fuji seems to be trending to taking manual controls away from the photographer. They removed the focus scale from their new super wide zoom. The aperture rings have been redesigned into a useless unmarked ring. And the 'focus by wire' is one of the worst inventions any camera company has come up with. The Fuji lenses that do have a marked aperture ring are poorly designed. They are such a loose goose affair that I have to use gaffers tape on mine to keep them from constantly moving. Fuji's AF is terrible for low light and problem conditions. The Leica is a joy to shoot with. The focus is positive and the manual controls straight forward. Simplicity is the hallmark of the Leica. I don't have to use gaffers tape on my Leicas. The Fuji has a quieter shutter than the Leica. The Monochrom does have the drop on the M240 with shutter sound. You can set the shutter for 'discreet' on the Monochrom and it allows the noisy cocking of the shutter to be done when you release the shutter button. What needs to be done to make things right on the rangefinder world is this… Fuji needs to make an affordable [$] 24mp FF rangefinder that takes Leica lenses. They need to copy the Leica and drop one of their superb sensors in it. BUT… Fuji must refrain from trying to reinvent the wheel into a square as they have done with their X system. Leica perfected eons ago what is needed in a good documentary camera. Fuji, Canon or Nikon could only improve on a Leica by making their Leica rangefinder copy affordable to more people and putting a better sensor in it. While the sensors in the Leica's are good, they are not stupendous. And if this never happens...we can still all be grateful that 'for a price' one can buy such a beautiful camera as a Leica.

Where shall I start... This is a phenomenal camera equipped with R or M lenses the package is superb. Sold all my Canon stuff except 70-200 mm IS II lens which I can still use on Leica M with an adapter (no control over aperture so you will have to shoot with f2.8). Love it, very secrete, perfect for any job.

Have had the camera for 3 weeks now and it is a gem. The build quality is as I expected after reading about Leicas for so many years but never owning one. I am so used to Auto Focus DSLR's that it took me some time to get used to and I still have a way to go. Th picture quality is excellent and the fun factor is even better.
Nobody really needs a Leica. My Nikon D4 does everything I need and then some but it is nice to travel light for once. If your looking for a change and have the $ to burn it's an amazing camera. As always B&H is was a pleasure to deal with.

i bought this product to upgrade from the Leica M8.2 and let me just say, that wow, the improvements that leica made over the previous camera are staggering, the picture quality, low light and shutter sound are all significantly improved. the rangefinder focusing is also significantly easier and the battery lasts for ages longer. all in all i am very happy with the product

This is as much as Leica as any of my film Leica's in the experience. I may shoot a few more images than my M6/7 but basically the same. Slow shooting is what I am after. The feel is all there. The shutter is glorious. The image files are wonderful. My conversions to BW are really fantastic files to work with.

Great to be back shooting an M on as my daily machine - its like coming home to a happy place.

The quality of images exceeds the ones taken with my Sony NEX 7 and Sony RSX 100 II. This will be my go to camera for the foreseeable future!

I've used several M series cameras for street photography. One camera-one lens, zone focused, and my feet know where to take me. I get into a creative zone using them where I'm creating images with a felt sense as opposed to carefully crafting the frame. My big gripe wiuth the Leica is the large red dot. It's like waving a flag in front of thieves. I'm in a zone shooting photos and they can easily slip up on me. I'm sick of spending thousands for a Leica M and then slapping black tape over the red dot. Anyone more than casually familiar with Leica rangefinders, who gets out on the street and uses them as the tool they are meant to be, not the bling so many buy it for, knows what I'm talking about.

I currently shoot with a Canon 5D MkIII and have previously owned a MkII and Nikon D100. I travel a great deal and typically bring the Canon along with 2-3 lenses. Over time, its become too burdensome to carry the Canon and lenses while traveling or even when I'm home. I have always considered buying a Leica rangefinder but balked at the cost and shooting with a manual camera and no AF or IS lenses. However, when the M240 came out I decided to finally take the plunge and buy my first Leica. It took 7 months before I received the M but the wait has been worth it. I've been using the M for almost a month now and it's a beautiful camera. The M and Leica lenses makes for great pictures. Using a Leica definitely makes you think about technique since the camera is completely manual. I love the camera's smaller profile compared to the 5D. I find myself taking more pictures in big crowds without feeling invasive. I am using a Leica 50mm f/2.8 Summicron ASPH and a Leica 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit ASPH (coupled with EVF2).

I have used a Leica M6 for 15 years. This is my first Digital Leica, and I found it very easy to use. To me the picture quality is excellent. I am very pleased to have a full frame digital Leica to use with my M mount lenses.

I found the rangefinder easy to focus. Live View is a nice feature. Menu options are well organized. LCD is clear.

I have just received the Leica digital M. I have waited six months for this to come in. I've been experimenting with it, my first range finder. My initial impressions: Incredible build quality. Very solid feel. Initial images with a 50mm Summilux are gorgeous!

After a long wait to receive this latest rendition of the M camera from Leica, I am not disappointed. Once the M to R adapter is available I look forward to again using the assortment of R lenses that I possess with the digital format of this M series camera. The first to offer both live view and a video option.
