To simply put, this Mac mini is "Amazing!"I was reluctant at first when I saw the specs of this machine. This is not my main machine for working on digital content (I have a Mac Pro for that). I wanted a machine that was affordable and which I could use for daily task and a little bit of content creation. I love my Mac pro, but there are times I feel like it's a waste to turn "on" such a powerful machine just for simple task such as web browsing or checking emails. I use a lot of resource intensive software such as Mudbox, After Effects and Adobe Premiere just to name a few (I know, I know I should be using an iMac, a Mac pro or a custom PC workstation). This machine has handled them all wonderfully. At first I was hesitant, and kept telling myself that I would just be wasting my time installing the apps I use on my Mac pro into this Mac mini, but curiosity got the better of me. To my surprise this machine was able to handle every task I threw at it. Yes, it gets a little slow here and there on heavy duty task, but most of that can be solved by adding a little more ram or even installing a SSD in this machine (for those tech savvy people). If you do light editing on videos with Premiere or some photo editing work on Photoshop then this machine is up for the job. If you are a casual gamer then this machine will do, but of course your not going to be able to dial the settings all the way to "Ultra," and since this is a Mac, the selection of games to choose from are rather "small." I'm not much of a gamer, I play video games here and there if I have the time or if I'm bored. I'v played a few games with this machine, with titles such as Team Fortress 2 and COD Black Ops on medium resolution and managed to averaged around 24-30 FPS. I was really impressed by the design of this machine. For a $ computer you can really feel the time and effort Apple has put in designing this product. Also the quality and feel of it is just extraordinary. What I love about this machine the most is how quiet it is, It's practically dead silent. Would I recommend this product? Short answer "YES!!!!"

As a very happy owner of a Mid 2010 Mac Mini and a Late 2009 MacBook it is difficult for me to give any Apple product such a low rating, but the late 2012 Mac Mini has a serious problem with the video, and as of this writing Apple Support is playing dumb about the issue inspite of numerous customer complaints and the remarkable number of posts on the Apple Support Community forum, and MacRumors forum. In the short time of one month since the 2012 Mac Mini was released there are well over 1000 posts regarding this issue and the numbers keep rising.

At this time I do not recommend the new 2012 Mini, or at least not until this problem has been clearly acknowledged and rectified by Apple. In the meantime I would suggest anyone considering a purchase spend a few hours of research time in the forums so you know what you're getting into. Older Mac Minis are still a great choice and the 2011 Mac Minis are still available from B&H.

B&H get 5 Stars for the expediant handling of my return and all the wonderfull service I've received from them over the last 18 years.

For those who would like more specific information regarding this issue I'm attaching the post I put on the Apple Support Community forum below.

Re: Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)
Nov 21, 2012 3:58 PM (in response to .Bunny)

I just received a new late 2012 2.5GHz Mac Mini from B&H Photo. From reading the forum I was aware that some people were experiencing this problem, but decided to order one anyway hoping these were isolated instances. NOT!

With the Mini turned on for less than five minutes I had my first blank screen followed by snow. I wasn't even through set up! It was as if the Mini went to sleep with a black screen. I hit the space bar and the screen came back with snow. Nothing I tried got rid of it so I hit the power button and it reset. Several times after that the screen would black out and then come back without the snow, so I contacted Apple Support and spent one and a half hours troubleshooting. The support tech was very helpful, but as others here have indicated he told me he was not familar with the problem. He spent a lot of time looking into it and talking with his supervisor, but in the end it was clear that Apple is not openly acknowledging they have a problem with the new Mini. He said if it continues to let them know and they could set up an appointment with the genius bar, as if they're going to know something tech support doesn't. Since it is an intermittent problem he indicated they would need to have it for a few days to troubleshoot. Finally, he told me if I was not happy with the Mini for any reason I could return it within 14 days.

That same evening I got the black screen and then snow so I just turned off my monitor and went to bed. This morning when I powered on the monitor the screen was back to normal with an error message telling me I had not properly ejected a disc...what? I saw this message a couple of other times when all I'd done is shut down the monitor or unplugged and replugged the HDMI cable. Don't know if others are seeing this error, but it seems pretty consistant, not that it makes any sense.

By the way, I have been using a mid 2010 mac mini for 2 years and the new one was installed with the same perripherals and cabling; the only thing different in my system was the new Mini.

I am pretty disappointed with Apple letting a new product out without proper testing. Obviously this problem is so pervasive that even in a day or two of testing it would have been easily spotted. What's up with their quality control?

As I write this I'm doing a secure erase of the hard drive and will be reloading OS X. I have already received a prepaid UPS mailer from B&H for the return. Clearly this problem is likely to be much more involved than a simple firmware fix. More likely it will require replacing the logic board once they admitt they have a problem and come up with a solution. Perhaps then I'll consider another one, but for now I'm taking advantage of the 14 day return policy.

Honestly, I am surprised no one else has mentioned returning theirs. Seems to me that's the best way to get Apple's attention.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

Super slow and it is amazing that it's a "newer" product. My 8-year-old Mac Pro runs circles around it but I'm forced to upgrade for certain programs (evil Adobe). Also, I don't care for the path Apple is taking sadly, and I've been an avid Mac user since the 80's and 90's. One advantage of this model is that it has Firewire 800 and comes with the OS X before Yosemite, so I can still run some older software...this is why I bought it. As for the slowness, I also purchased it with the intent to upgrade the internal hard drive replacing it with TWO SSD (Solid State) drives (SanDisk) with a kit from OWC (Other World Computing)--this is NOT going to be an easy task as I'll have to completely disassemble the computer, and I mean completely. So, I will remove the slow, 5400 rpm internal drive, and replace it with 2 lightning fast SSD drives. I will also max out the RAM which is easy to do. After this, it should be a solid solution for the next 3-5 years.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

Got this to replace an 11-year-old Mac Pro. Yeah, we use our computers a long time. Probably too long. Decided to get the older late 2012 Mac Mini because I wanted to be able to add more memory myself and needed the Firewire 800 port for legacy equipment. Will add a second SSD later. It's plenty quick for our needs and we use Photoshop and Lightroom *a lot.* I was a bit worried that the Intel graphics wouldn't have enough muscle, but it's faster than my iMac (OK, it's getting long in the tooth, too). Paired it with a 24-inch Dell monitor and it's a sweet combination. Too bad Apple didn't keep user upgradeable memory in the new Mac Minis.

I purchased this Mac Mini because I found that it has better features (Firewire ports, upgradeable RAM) than Apple's 2014 Mac Minis. It's a tremendous machine and a great value. It also came with Mac OS 10.9 installed and NOT 10.10 (Yosemite), which is another plus!

I'm a graphic designer using the entire Adobe Creative Suite and Quark along a Wacom tablet and I'm driving two monitors - so I have some pretty demanding requirements, and this computer does not disappoint!

This is my 3rd Mini since 2006 (I used to run a G5 tower, but loved the form factor so much I made the switch) and this is the best by far. Blazingly fast, a little bigger footprint than previous models, but looks like it's from the future. I do miss an optical drive, but I just need time - I said that about floppy disks, too, but it is the best Mac I've ever had - and is such an incredible value.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

The Mini really has no equal when it comes to small desktop computers. The Late 2012 version allows the user to upgrade the Memory and the storage very easily. The newer "Late 2014" version does not have this flexibility. USB 3 and thunderbolt ports give you lots of speed for peripherals. Put a SSD in this and you have a real screamer running OS X or even Windows/Linux.

This is the 3rd 2012 model I've bought or bought for others. Two of them since the 2014 models came out (don't like them at all). Got this one, swapped in a 1TB drive before even setting it up, installed Yosemite, set up the user's account, copied over a bunch of stuff from a failing WinXP machine, and the relative it was purchased for couldn't be happier. Since it was new they even got to download and install all of the iLife and iWork programs (for free).Initially tried using the Migration Assistant to bring the stuff over from the WinXP machine, but that creates an account with the same name as the account on the Windows machine (in this case "PC-OWNER" -- real classy). That's stupid. It should just copy the stuff to the account on the Mac that you are logged into. Ended up just dragging over everything to an external disk and moving it that way. It was mostly just pictures and documents.

Replacing a giant 40 lbs. G5 Powermac tower with this tiny footprint desktop box. Runs everything much faster and I'm able to run the latest versions now. I use Filemaker Pro and Word with no problems. Going to upgrade the slow 5400 rpm hard drive with an SSD drive and expect a further increase in speed, as the hard drive just can't keep up with the all the fast hardware that this Mac Mini has in it. If you aren't doing Photoshop or some power hungry games this is a great little machine for everyday use.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

It may seem counterintuitive to purchase a 2-year old model when Apple has just state red selling the latest generation Mac Mini. But I needed this unit as a music and movie server, so the CPU performance is not critical (my other server is a 2009 model and it works fine). What I did not like in the 2014 version was the impossibility of upgrading memory. With just 4GB, the entry-level model may get obsolete in a few years as MacOS grows in size. B&H were offering 2012 models cheaper (and free of sales tax) than the entry-level 2014, and I can upgrade memory and disk at will in the future, so this worked great for me. Another feature I was sorry to see go in the 2014 model is the FW800 port. My mix of Apple equipment spans 2009 to 2012 gear, and FW800 is more convenient that Thunderbolt to hook all the pieces together. As usual, B&H were superfast their free delivery got the unit to me (in Texas) 2 working days after purchase.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

I got my late 2012 mac mini a few days ago and it's the one with the sandy bridge I-7 processor with 4 gig ram and a 1 TB hard drive. the day i got it, i went out and bought 2 8gig sticks of ram and it took only a few minutes to make mine a 16 gig machine. i've had almost no experience tearing into a computer, but after watching a couple of youtube videos on replacing ram, it was much easier than i expected. it's now a screamer, and it feels quicker than my 2011 macbook pro which also has the 16gig of ram and a 1TB hybrid drive. this replaces my late 2011 iMac and with the LG 27" mp33 IPS led monitor, it's a great system for me. I'm an old guy at 63 last week, but i still ride my barleys and build hotrods, so i ain't dead yet. i still get a kick out of old fps games like doom, quake, hexxen, heretic, and lately the bio shock stuff. i use my mac mini for surfing the web. it's a great machine, and it defies the fact that it's tiny, but a true powerhouse. i'm really glad to have found it at B&H, and delivery was unbelievably quick.

I love this little Mac! I use it for Logix X and other music production software. I am a beginner so I do not put a huge load on it. But it is more than plenty for my needs. It is so quiet I cannot tell it's on!

The late 2012 Mac Mini systems like this one are the latest and last ones that let you upgrade the RAM and easier for replacing the hard drive. Also, with the latest Mac Mini version, the system at the lowest price point in some ways is less powerful than this one.New ones won't be available for long. Buy this while you can.

I'm pleased with my new Mac mini. It is quiet and has enough power for my needs. Primarily used for photos, music and video. I will be upgrading Ram and replacing hard drive with ssd on Black Friday. I had waited for the upgraded Mini, but for me the 2012 version is a better fit. Excellent purchasing experience with b&h. Package came double boxed in excellent condition.
