To simply put, this Mac mini is "Amazing!"I was reluctant at first when I saw the specs of this machine. This is not my main machine for working on digital content (I have a Mac Pro for that). I wanted a machine that was affordable and which I could use for daily task and a little bit of content creation. I love my Mac pro, but there are times I feel like it's a waste to turn "on" such a powerful machine just for simple task such as web browsing or checking emails. I use a lot of resource intensive software such as Mudbox, After Effects and Adobe Premiere just to name a few (I know, I know I should be using an iMac, a Mac pro or a custom PC workstation). This machine has handled them all wonderfully. At first I was hesitant, and kept telling myself that I would just be wasting my time installing the apps I use on my Mac pro into this Mac mini, but curiosity got the better of me. To my surprise this machine was able to handle every task I threw at it. Yes, it gets a little slow here and there on heavy duty task, but most of that can be solved by adding a little more ram or even installing a SSD in this machine (for those tech savvy people). If you do light editing on videos with Premiere or some photo editing work on Photoshop then this machine is up for the job. If you are a casual gamer then this machine will do, but of course your not going to be able to dial the settings all the way to "Ultra," and since this is a Mac, the selection of games to choose from are rather "small." I'm not much of a gamer, I play video games here and there if I have the time or if I'm bored. I'v played a few games with this machine, with titles such as Team Fortress 2 and COD Black Ops on medium resolution and managed to averaged around 24-30 FPS. I was really impressed by the design of this machine. For a $ computer you can really feel the time and effort Apple has put in designing this product. Also the quality and feel of it is just extraordinary. What I love about this machine the most is how quiet it is, It's practically dead silent. Would I recommend this product? Short answer "YES!!!!"

As a very happy owner of a Mid 2010 Mac Mini and a Late 2009 MacBook it is difficult for me to give any Apple product such a low rating, but the late 2012 Mac Mini has a serious problem with the video, and as of this writing Apple Support is playing dumb about the issue inspite of numerous customer complaints and the remarkable number of posts on the Apple Support Community forum, and MacRumors forum. In the short time of one month since the 2012 Mac Mini was released there are well over 1000 posts regarding this issue and the numbers keep rising.

At this time I do not recommend the new 2012 Mini, or at least not until this problem has been clearly acknowledged and rectified by Apple. In the meantime I would suggest anyone considering a purchase spend a few hours of research time in the forums so you know what you're getting into. Older Mac Minis are still a great choice and the 2011 Mac Minis are still available from B&H.

B&H get 5 Stars for the expediant handling of my return and all the wonderfull service I've received from them over the last 18 years.

For those who would like more specific information regarding this issue I'm attaching the post I put on the Apple Support Community forum below.

Re: Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)
Nov 21, 2012 3:58 PM (in response to .Bunny)

I just received a new late 2012 2.5GHz Mac Mini from B&H Photo. From reading the forum I was aware that some people were experiencing this problem, but decided to order one anyway hoping these were isolated instances. NOT!

With the Mini turned on for less than five minutes I had my first blank screen followed by snow. I wasn't even through set up! It was as if the Mini went to sleep with a black screen. I hit the space bar and the screen came back with snow. Nothing I tried got rid of it so I hit the power button and it reset. Several times after that the screen would black out and then come back without the snow, so I contacted Apple Support and spent one and a half hours troubleshooting. The support tech was very helpful, but as others here have indicated he told me he was not familar with the problem. He spent a lot of time looking into it and talking with his supervisor, but in the end it was clear that Apple is not openly acknowledging they have a problem with the new Mini. He said if it continues to let them know and they could set up an appointment with the genius bar, as if they're going to know something tech support doesn't. Since it is an intermittent problem he indicated they would need to have it for a few days to troubleshoot. Finally, he told me if I was not happy with the Mini for any reason I could return it within 14 days.

That same evening I got the black screen and then snow so I just turned off my monitor and went to bed. This morning when I powered on the monitor the screen was back to normal with an error message telling me I had not properly ejected a disc...what? I saw this message a couple of other times when all I'd done is shut down the monitor or unplugged and replugged the HDMI cable. Don't know if others are seeing this error, but it seems pretty consistant, not that it makes any sense.

By the way, I have been using a mid 2010 mac mini for 2 years and the new one was installed with the same perripherals and cabling; the only thing different in my system was the new Mini.

I am pretty disappointed with Apple letting a new product out without proper testing. Obviously this problem is so pervasive that even in a day or two of testing it would have been easily spotted. What's up with their quality control?

As I write this I'm doing a secure erase of the hard drive and will be reloading OS X. I have already received a prepaid UPS mailer from B&H for the return. Clearly this problem is likely to be much more involved than a simple firmware fix. More likely it will require replacing the logic board once they admitt they have a problem and come up with a solution. Perhaps then I'll consider another one, but for now I'm taking advantage of the 14 day return policy.

Honestly, I am surprised no one else has mentioned returning theirs. Seems to me that's the best way to get Apple's attention.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

It may seem counterintuitive to purchase a 2-year old model when Apple has just state red selling the latest generation Mac Mini. But I needed this unit as a music and movie server, so the CPU performance is not critical (my other server is a 2009 model and it works fine). What I did not like in the 2014 version was the impossibility of upgrading memory. With just 4GB, the entry-level model may get obsolete in a few years as MacOS grows in size. B&H were offering 2012 models cheaper (and free of sales tax) than the entry-level 2014, and I can upgrade memory and disk at will in the future, so this worked great for me. Another feature I was sorry to see go in the 2014 model is the FW800 port. My mix of Apple equipment spans 2009 to 2012 gear, and FW800 is more convenient that Thunderbolt to hook all the pieces together. As usual, B&H were superfast their free delivery got the unit to me (in Texas) 2 working days after purchase.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

I got my late 2012 mac mini a few days ago and it's the one with the sandy bridge I-7 processor with 4 gig ram and a 1 TB hard drive. the day i got it, i went out and bought 2 8gig sticks of ram and it took only a few minutes to make mine a 16 gig machine. i've had almost no experience tearing into a computer, but after watching a couple of youtube videos on replacing ram, it was much easier than i expected. it's now a screamer, and it feels quicker than my 2011 macbook pro which also has the 16gig of ram and a 1TB hybrid drive. this replaces my late 2011 iMac and with the LG 27" mp33 IPS led monitor, it's a great system for me. I'm an old guy at 63 last week, but i still ride my barleys and build hotrods, so i ain't dead yet. i still get a kick out of old fps games like doom, quake, hexxen, heretic, and lately the bio shock stuff. i use my mac mini for surfing the web. it's a great machine, and it defies the fact that it's tiny, but a true powerhouse. i'm really glad to have found it at B&H, and delivery was unbelievably quick.

The late 2012 Mac Mini systems like this one are the latest and last ones that let you upgrade the RAM and easier for replacing the hard drive. Also, with the latest Mac Mini version, the system at the lowest price point in some ways is less powerful than this one.New ones won't be available for long. Buy this while you can.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

I'm pleased with my new Mac mini. It is quiet and has enough power for my needs. Primarily used for photos, music and video. I will be upgrading Ram and replacing hard drive with ssd on Black Friday. I had waited for the upgraded Mini, but for me the 2012 version is a better fit. Excellent purchasing experience with b&h. Package came double boxed in excellent condition.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

This is the best Mac Mini I've had over the years. Very easy to set up and get running. As others have said, a very quiet running machine. A good collection of included software as well. Mine came with Maverick 9.5 so an easy upgrade path to Yosemite. A good intro computer and great for surfing the web, streaming music, or whatever your home usage needs are. I can run Photoshop and Lightroom on it fine but wouldn't want to try anything more intensive such as 3D rendering or processing large video files. My only complaint is I wish Apple had left the DVD drive in it. This model has been discontinued by Apple and no longer on their online store. The new low cost Mac Mini at $ is a 1.4 ghz (though it can turbo boost up to 2.7) and the ram is not user upgradable. This 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core model is a much better buy with a similar feature set and same set of apps.

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

this was an upgrade before my way older computer died so that I could transfer some programs to it. Much speedier and smaller than my old desktop.

Don't care much for Mavericks though, as they have changed things around and fiddled with the way they work, often for the worse.

Aside from that everything works well and faster so pleased about the purchase

Comments about Apple Mac mini Desktop Computer (Late 2012):

I purchased this product as part of a home backup solution. I needed to do wireless Time Machine backups for a couple of MacBook Pros. As with other Apple products, unpacking & setting it up was a simple. Once all all the system updates were in place, I downloaded the server app from the app store & configured it for Time Machine backups. Everything was fairly easy to setup and the MacBooks are now being backed up regularly. As a bonus, I'm also using this server's iTunes application for home sharing – allowing me to stream music & videos that are stored on it to other computers & devices (even an AppleTV) on my home network.

The ordering process at B&H went smooth, I received a tracking number and my order was delivered on time. Overall an A+ online shopping experience!

Bought the Mac mini to replace an old desktop PC with outdated operating system. Only minor issue was hooking up the monitor as I had to purchase a separate HDMI to DVI cable, but the cost was under $. As I've discovered over the last 3 years, Apple knows what they are doing.

I had an older computer which I wanted to retire as a startup drive but keep for data serving. I got this because it allows me to run much faster and still access everything I need to off the older machine.

It's a Mac.. what can I say! $50 cheaper than anywhere else, plus free software included. These computers have plenty of power and can handle general as well as media needs. My only recommendations would be to upgrade the ram to at least 8gb and to use a 7200rpm+ external hard drive for audio or video purposes. The built in card reader is a nice touch as well for media folks.
