I just got back from an afternoon of shooting in Taipei. For reference, most of my shooting is with a ID-X and L lenses. The appeal of this was the high resolution, small IS lens in the kit, and the EF adapter so that I could use my good lenses. The menus are quite deep but easily understood. It just take a little adapting to find what you want, as they don't follow normal Canon protocol. My favorite feature is the touch-sensitive LCD screen on the back, which not only allows you to pick the focus point but also the metering point, whether evaluative or narrow. The one thing I had to get used to is how small it is and thus how easy it is to touch a control you don't intend to. I have to say that it looks hilarious hooked up to a EOS EF 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS USM! Basically the lens IS your grip. The battery life gets eaten up pretty quickly if you leave continuous auto focus on. Check out this gallery of 19 images, all of which were taken with the camera, and either the 18-55mm kit lens or the 70-200 mentioned above. The two brides were shot at an effective 320mm, handheld. A really amazing camera and I'm surprised it's not double the cost.

At $[$] for the 18-55mm zoom kit, this was a great deal for a step-up from a point-and-shoot for a family member. For me, though, that's all it is. How professionals claim to be using this camera with adapters and "real" Canon lenses is beyond me. I'm an enthusiast (though not a pro), and while the Fuji X100 has been an extraordinary replacement for heavy and bulky DSLRs for me(fixed lens limitations aside), I cannot imagine relying on this Canon M for anything but glorified point-and-shoot. The lack of an OVF (let alone hybrid system) is enough to put a cork in that. Add unimpressive color, annoying interface with no quick access to dials, pretty poor low light/high ISO perofrmance sans flash, etc., and you've got a decent camera for snapshots, but not much more. Also, while the firmware seems to have made focus speed acceptable, it's not fast, so you can forget about using this for running kids or anything. Still, a decent camera for the price during the promotion, and just as good in my opinion as its competitors like the Sony NEX 3 and the 3/4 Olympus and Panasonic systems (and at a cheaper price!)

Just what I was looking for.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

Have used some of the camon SLRs owned by family members. Find them too cumbersome to carry for all day. The m with 18-55 lens is great. Find the picture quality to be great. Take many pictures of sailing and rowing and find the burst to be acceptable. For the most part will use for vacation and family shots. For the price could not be beat.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I bought this camera for my wife to supplement her Canon 7D so she didnt have to carry a backpack for her camera, yet allowed her to take good quality RAW photos. This camera is user friendly, lightweight yet a solid build and my wife loves it. Now that we have children, it is easier for her to continue to shoot with a little one in tow with this camera and we can use our existing canon lens and flashes with this camera as well.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I wanted this camera when it first came out but waited to see the reviews first and changed my mind. However, when the price dropped, I bought and actually really like it. I wanted something small and portable that I could still get good pictures and video with that was inexpensive and small. I have the Canon 7D & C100 which are my primary cameras for video and photos with all L series lenses. I just came back from the Philippines and from San Franciso and took this camera instead. Got some excellent photos and video. Yes the focusing is a bit wonky and struggles a bit with some subjects that don't have clear contracts. However, for what I shoot for training, landscape, and people shots, it works great. It took some getting used to but I actually like touch screen focusing. For a few things I had to switch over to manual focus. It is good for stills but I didn't like using it for close up video shots with moving subjects like my kids playing in the park. Hey it isn't a 7D or C100 (absolutely love both of those cameras!) but it means that I always have a camera with me which I wouldn't always take those everywhere I go. Paired up with a Rode videomic pro I think it does pretty good with video and audio for a small package. I'm looking forward to the next version!

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

This is a really great little camera. The images it takes are nice and sharp and low light performance is very good too. It's pretty easy to operate especially if you have other Canon digital cameras you're familiar with. I have both the 18-55 mm zoom and the 22 mm "pancake" prime lens. I bought a 270 EX II flash to use on it off CL. I like the size and layout of it but it's so small it takes some getting used to. Bokeh is really nice on both lenses. I'm hoping Canon makes some more lenses for it like a 55-250 mm or 18-135 mm. There is also a wide angle 11-22(?) mm zoom available too but not in the US. I bought mine July 2013 and it came with the updated firmware so I cannot comment on the focus speed improvement but I can say I don't find it a problem with the majority of photos I take with it. Sometimes tilting it a little helps it prefocus and you can magnify the live view too. For fast moving subjects I would recommend a DSLR or another camera with faster focus than the EOS M. Video is really good on the M and so is the Audio with it's built in stereo mics. You can manually set the audio levels and it has a stereo audio input too. My other hobby is playing music and I have used the M to video a few gigs. I used a Tascam DP 004 to record the audio and connected it to the M's audio input. The DP 004 has a couple of condenser mics that are really good and the audio sounded great on both. As expected it was better than the camera's built in mics which is why I set it up that way. Love it! Glad I bought one.

It would seem that this camera has gotten some bad press. I couldn't disagree more. This is an outstanding camera. Granted it is a bit slow, but so am I. Usually I drive and then hike rather long distances to get a great shot. I'm a former 4x5 view camera person and don't shoot sports or my kids. Thankfully none of my kids had much interest in sports. And about the flash? Just push the shutter and see what happens.

If your priority is image quality in a small package, this is your camera. The size is really impressively small. It makes very nice photos at high ISO. The camera is built much more solidly than any other camera of this size that I have seen. I also love that I can use it with any of my EF lenses with the adapter (sold seperately.)

This camera really shines when used for video. The STM lenses track the subject very well so that you dont have to manually focus.

Autofocus is just ok, not sufficent to get consistent in-focus shots with kids running around, but sufficient most anything else. I do get some keepers even shooting kids. The autofocus is just slightly faster than an iphone. It is slower with EF lenses.

I cant help but love the camera in spite of the autofocus. The best camera is the one you have with you, and this one is easy to bring anywhere.

I wanted a good general purpose small camera with APS sensor quality Image Quality. The 18-55mm lens is top notch and build quality first class. The LCD screen when turned up to full bright is very useful in direct sun outdoor settings. I have grown to like the touch screen for quick and easy camera setting changes.
Camera focus speed is adequate, but would like to see improvement. The lens adapter allows me to use all canon lenses.

Its been over two years since I've used an actual camera. I figured, why should I buy a camera when I can just simply use my I-Phone? Well, I'm addicted to shooting photos with this camera after only two weeks! My photos are WAY better and I couldn't be any happier with the purchase. Tech talk aside, this camera has made me remember how a good photo can make all the difference. The I-Phone will be used for talking only from this point on.

        Beyond happy!

If you have the updated firmware v.2.02 the auto focus is not as bad as many reviewers say. It is not a pro-camera, and for the price of $[$]it a bargain. Where are you going to find a camera with a APS-C size sensor for this price. The bottom line is the camera take great pictures.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I am not a professional photographer and I got this camera, because I thought it was exactly right for making good photos, and not being very high-priced. I also did not want to take something big like an entry-level SLR with me. This mirror less camera offered something that had the sensor of an SLR, and the compactness of a point and shoot. The EOS m is a camera that is easy to work with right out of the box. The way you navigate around the settings of the camera is really easy, and intuitive with the very responsive touchscreen. If you want to fin out how something works just tap on the screen and try it out. It also easy to navigate through different shooting modes while making pictures. The picture quality is great. It has the 18 megapixel sensor which makes great pictures. I have made some pictures of signs, or cards, and have zoomed in to see the text and it was easy to see the text on it. The aps-c sensor itself is great as well. Instead of carrying around that big bulky SLR, like the canon rebel series, you have a camera with a large sensor the size that it can fit in your pocket. The ISO level is also perfect, because it gives you 12,800 (you can play around with it to get 25,600) with which pictures can easily be made in places with less light. The shooting modes are also like the ones you would get with an SLR, Manual, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Portrait, and so on. The video being 1920x1080 is also more than satisfactory. The auto focus is pretty good. Many people say that taking pictures with the EOS m is slow, but it really does not take that long to make a picture, especially with the new firmware update. Here are some things I do not really like about the camera. I am a person who likes having a lot of zoom, and that is not currently a possibility with the EF-m lenses that the EOS m camera uses. There is an adapter you can buy directly from canon, but that costs almost $[$], although there are some other companies that also make this kind of adapter for less. Even if you got the adapter you would still have to pay for the lens which is not cheap.Overall, this is a great camera. I think the sensor is gigantic for this size of a camera, and so is the sensor quality. If you are looking for something that it is not too high-priced, but still of high quality, then this is the camera for you.

        Great Camera Worth Considering

        By Jerry

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I love this camera more than expected. First off, the reviews regarding focus issues are valid. However the touchscreen option of selecting focus far outweighs the multiple options for selecting focus through an electronic viewfinder or other methods currently surfacing. Would this replace my DSLR? - not yet. But do I prefer to use the EOS M - Definitely!

Will I reach for the EOS M more often? Yes. Size and ease of use are just perfect. Lack of Viewfinder is a miss - But I also have a Fuji X20 and despite it's having an optical viewfinder, still prefer the EOS M.

Sound of shutter is soft and Solid - even so called "Silent Shutter" on higher end cameras are not so silent. Build quality is excellent with a solid feel for body and more than adequate Kit lens. Image quality is VERY high and impressive for something so easy and fun to use. I also like the touchscreen menus and their simplicity to use.

NOTE: Aperture 3.4.5 does not accurately display 18 - 55mm lens Info - reads as 22mm - though actual lens zoom size is accurate. Lightroom and Canon apps read correctly.

For the price alone this is a great deal. But having used the Olympus and Sony mirror-less cameras I was much less satisfied. Only the Fuji X-E1 and 2 beat this one for me - and they are not even fair to compare since the price range is not equal. Canon Lens Mount adapter is great for my existing lenses - my EFS 60mm Macro is really the one that shines. Once you start getting into bigger lenses would probably switch to DSLR anyway. Also be careful with the Larger lenses blocking the Infrared focus sensor - as well as your hand! But this camera is also great to have just as a back-up body in the bag.

Overall - one's preference is hard to predict - but if you are already in the Canon family and want to venture into this segment - please consider the EOS M. Hopefully Canon will start to offer more lenses and the newer Version in the States. If people continue to buy maybe they will reconsider.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

I bought this camera for 2 reasons:

        1. To have something more portable than my 5D Mark II for family/personsal photos. With the 5D, 24-70 f2.8L, and a large flash, I found myself rarely taking my primary camera anywhere for personal use. It was just to bulky.

        2. To use in making 1080p promo videos for a client. The 5D worked okay for this also, but I really needed something lighter with good stabilization (the kit lens is actually very good for this if you have decent light). And there were a few newer features on the EOS M that made it (in my opinion at least) better for video than the 5D.

Originally, I was torn between this camera and the SL1. The technical specs are almost identical with just a few differences (mono mic on the SL1, creative filters work for VIDEO on the SL1, etc). But the major advantages of the SL1 are the built-in flash, viewfinder, and faster follow-up photos. I am so used to double-tapping the shutter on my SLRs when taking pics of my kids or pets... anything that moves too much... to make sure I get the shot. Unless I haven't found the setting, this is not possible on the EOS M. I actually debated on sending the EOS M back and getting the SL1. At the time, the SL1 kit wasn't much more than the EOS M kit with the EF/EF-S adapter. Instead, I bought the other lens... the 22mm f2. If you don't have it, get it. Now I'm glad I stuck with the EOS M.

The EOS M with the 22mm lens is MUCH smaller than any SLR with makes it perfect for my first reason for buying it (to have a good camera with me more often). At f/2, I can get by without a flash in most cases. Problem solved there. I also changed shutter/AE lock settings to match my 5D's settings (separate buttons). I feel this gives me more control and speeds up follow-up photos since the camera doesn't need to focus again. At this point, I'd be giving it 4 stars. But there's more (if I haven't lost you yet).

Last weekend, I used the EOS M to film a quick promo video. I set up indoors near a window and added one daylight-balanced light for fill. Using the adapter (which was deeply discounted when purchased as a bundle), I attached my 50mm f/1.4. The EOS M lets you zoom the image on the screen to fine-tune your focus. This feature is VERY handy. I captured audio through a lav mic, into a tascam recorder, and connected to the EOS M with a line-to-mic level attenuator. This kit is light enough to fit on a smaller/lighter tripod than my previous setup. And it all fits in a smaller, more portable case. After viewing the video on a 46" TV, I couldn't be more pleased with the results.

The EOS M is definitely not for everyone. The focus is a tad slow still and there's no flash or viewfinder. But it's working great for my needs. Hope this helps.

Comments about EOS-M Mirrorless Digital Camera with EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens (Black):

The picture quality of the camera was great just not really user friendly. I have been taking pictures and video's for over 30 years and was really excited to get a mirrorless camera. Since have Canon has been my camera of choice for many years now. This one just missed the boat.

I love that they have packed a dslr sensor into something the size of a point-and-shoot, with the versatility of interchangable lenses.

The camera is my, go everywhere camera, and this is facilitated by it's small size and it's sturdy but light weight construction. Images are better than the ones produced by my Canon T1i, which are very good. Focus is a little slow but that goes along with the way I use the camera. The 22mm lens which is
what most of my pictures are taken with is sharp and compact, it would be hoped that Canon would market an external focus accessory for bright daylight.
