I know this has been the "why did Canon make this particular lens" of the year but here is my experience and take: (shooting on the Canon 5D Mark lll)
I have had a 24-105 F4L since it first came out and have used it for most of my landscape work along with my 17-40L and my longer L series telephotos zooms. It has always been my go to lens for landscapes and my normal walk around lens. I decided to try the 24-70F2.8 ll first . Shot it against the 24-105 and did not find it any sharper in real life tests using the same test subjects I use for all of my new lenses. I also did not like losing the Image stabilization since it would be a go to walk around lens. I also do not need to go to f2.8 for landscapes but it would have been nice for inside low light photos where flash would be a pain or not allowable. But for me I decided I was paying way too much for a stop of light I did not need that much plus losing IS on a go to walk around lens was not that good- especially when the IQ was not any better for me then my 24-105.
So, I decided to give the new 24-70's one more try, sent back the f2.8 and exchanged it for the 24-70 F4. It has now replaced the 24-105 F4 as my primary landscape and walk around lens. It does shoot sharper edge to edge then the 24-105, does not have the barrel distortion at 24mm and shoots a slightly brighter image. It is also a little shorter and lighter. Although I have a dedicated Macro lens, having the "kinda" macro feature is also handy for a close up you were not prepared for. Do I miss the extra stretch from 70- 105 mm sometimes? Yes, but I have plenty of L zooms from 70 + with me at the same time. Just have to change lenses a little more frequently now.
My advice to anyone contemplating the 24-70 F4L over the 24-70 F2.8Lll or the 24-105F4L is this: If you shoot primarily outside and have another good quality zoom that goes over 70mm, get the 24-70 F4L. If you shoot primarily outside but do not have a good zoom over 70mm, go with the 24-105. If you shoot primarily indoors and do not need IS and do not mind spending the extra bucks, then the F2.8

I am pleased with this lens overall, upgrading from old 28-135 lens I've used for over a decade. The 24-70 is sharp and color is brighter and I like the "macro" ability and lens lock-up. The only thing which really frustrates me and makes me gnash my teeth is that the zoom ring is so skinny and ridiculously close to the camera body that it is really hard to zoom. Very awkward and slow to use. Why couldn't the zoom ring be the further out ring and the manual focus ring be closer to the body as in my old 28-135?!?! I can't zoom and support the lens with my hand effectively.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

But that is a good thing in terms of image sharpness. The 24-105L is a pretty old design and doesn't hold up to the higher MP bodies. This lens does. I would have given it a 5 except that I miss the extra 35mm.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens and compared with the Canon 24-70mm f2.8L II that I had. It's at least as sharp as my f2.8, and I have more keepers because of Image stabilization. Since I don't really need f2.8, it was an easy decision to keep this lens and sell the f2.8 on @!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I owned multiple Canon L-series lenses throughout career, and always update and upgrade my equipment to stay current and use the best and reliable tools. That new 24-70mm f/4L is one of the best lenses I've EVER had, no kidding.Lightweight (compared to 85mm 1.2 and some other L-series zooms), super sharp, the quickest autofocus. It is also very compact compared to 24-105 or 24-70 F2.8.But what impressed me THE MOST was the MACRO capability, which allows me to focus as close as about 10 inches away from the subject, when zoomed out all the way to 70mm. That is insanely close for a wide-angle zoom lens.Would definitely recommend for outdoors shooters, who don't necessarily need the F2.8. Even if you're shooting indoors, the optical stabilization will cover you for almost 4 f-stops, when a non-IS F2.8 lens is only 1 stop brighter. At that price, especially if you're lucky to catch it during the Canon's Rebate program timing, it is a real steal! Take one for yourself and one for a friend and run ;)Highly recommend considering that lens. Would have given 6-stars if I could.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens to replace my oversized and overweight 24-70 2.8 v1. As of late I have been traveling more and shooting more film projects with my c100. I needed to fit my gear, be under the carry-on limit and gain IS for walking shots. This lens fits the bill admirably. The weight saving is significant and has excellent performance in both sharpness and low vignetting wide open, something the 24-105 does not offer. It has a very nice build quality and comes with a nice cap and strong hood. I don't miss the 2.8 because with film I am always at f4 for interviews to gain a little depth of field on my subject. The macro mode is much better than the 2.8v1, although it does require that you hit a release switch to push the barrel out to the macro range. The v1 lets you focus as if it were a regular shot, but the minimum focus distance was not that close. This model lets you get a few inches away.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Had I bought this at its original introductory price, I very likely would have returned it, but its current pricing makes it an appealing and viable option for a standard, walkabout lens on FF (I'm using it on a 6D). I would recommend this over the 24-70mm f/2.8 to anyone whose standard use cases do not involve fast moving subjects or low-light conditions that would make the faster non-IS lens the better option over the slower, cheaper IS-equipped f/4.

Firstly, the most talked-about issue: The focus shift. It is real, but can be worked around in the worst-case situations. The shift is worst at the 70mm end with a subject near the minimum focus distance. I did some test shots for this case, and found that a close subject I focused on at f/4 did indeed fall outside of the range of acceptable focus at f/5.6 and f/8. This is not ideal, but there are two workarounds: Putting the lens into macro mode makes the problem go away, as if by magic, with only a slight narrowing of field of view from 70mm in normal mode. I saw no perceptible shifts when pixel-peeping shots taken at the start of the macro range, and also noticed the images were sharper overall than at regular-mode 70mm. The second workaround is one for a more controlled environment, rather than in the field, and involves manually focusing in live view mode while holding down the DoF preview button. Focus at the aperture you're shooting at, and of course WYSIWYG.

Also worth noting, when in macro mode, you lose infinity focus, but the actual maximum focus distance is still far enough away for non-macro use. I haven't formally measured it, but it is at least 4 meters, much greater usable range than I'm used to with extension tubes on lenses in this focal length range.

Pros: Well built, comparable to the 24-105, 16-35 and 24-70/2.8. Better sharpness over the full range than I'm used to from a standard zoom. I used the EF-S 17-55mm for 3.5 years on a 60D, and just accepted that it was poor wide open at 55mm. I'd use my 60/2.8 if I needed a sharp photo at that focal length and had the time to swap. Distortion at 24mm is much less pronounced than with the 24-105L, thank goodness. The 'macro' mode is very useful, but as I mentioned above I find it most useful for getting the best image quality from the lens when shooting close subjects (closer then a few meters). Using it at its actual 0.7x working distance would be hard, as the subject will be just a couple of cm from the front element.

Cons: Apart from the focus shift issue, my biggest wish for this lens would be to have the focus and zoom rings swap places. This is not my go-to lens when I'm working indoors with a tripod, focusing manually. On a walkabout, the zoom ring is more important to me, and I wish it were farther from the camera body and larger. The focus ring is where I naturally want to hold the lens when shooting handheld, which puts me at some risk of making unintentional FTM adjustments. Secondly, I do wish that Canon hand found a way to make this work as a 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II. I would have liked all the optical improvements without the loss of reach, but do understand the loss is likely part of the compromise to improve the quality.

Also the metabones smart adapter helps us utilize more functions on this lens when mounted to our Panasonic GH3. Content comes out great!

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I bought this primarily to provide image stabilization on my Sony a7s in video mode when hand holding or on a monopod. Image quality was also a very high priority. I use a Metabones EF to E adapter which allows the camera to electronically set/read the aperture and provides power for the lens stabilizer. It also allows autofocus, but in most cases would be way, way too slow (but in my experience it does autofocus accurately).

The build, lens sharpness, and image stabilization are all what I hoped for. The stabilization is impressive. I'm older and a little shaky and still it does a very good job. The stabilization also really helps when I use a monopod especially starting and stopping the video where the a7s' record button placement makes it hard to do without shake. Some might think the f/4 of the lens is not good enough, but for me with this cameras sensitivity it's fine. I generally want more depth of field, not less, and the reduced weight compared to it's f/2.8 cousin is welcome especially given the very small size of the a7s. I've used this combo to shoot sunrises and indoor events and I've been very happy with the results.

I'm really enjoying this lens. Prior to a camping trip I rented this lens to test it, and LOVED it. The images are very clean and crisp on my 6D. I opted for the f4 over the f2.8 for a few reasons 1) the f4 costs significantly less money 2) I mostly shoot landscapes and my aperture is usually f8-f13 3) the Canon 6D offers outstanding low light and high ISO performance. I wasn't sure about this focal range until using it, and now it's my go to lens. The 24-70 f4 also complements my other lenses, 16-35 f4 L IS, 70-200 f4 L IS, and the Tamron 150-600mm.

Comments about Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

My new favorite lens. Significantly lighter than the f2.8 version, yet just as good IQ.

The macro range is useless, so don't buy it on that factor. But it doesn't really need it to shine.

I've tried to choose between 24-105 f4 and this lens, since I have already owned Canon 70-300mm,I finally settled on this one.
So far, this is exactly the one that I am looking for, very sharp and quiet.

This is my first L lens and I'm super impressed! I'm not sure if I will ever go back to buying non L lenses. It's fast, sharp, and has a very good build quality. The only downside to this lens is only being an f4 but with the f2.8 version not having IS, this was the better choice for me. Love it!
