I've owned a number of Drift cameras over the past several years, and I've always been impressed but they keep getting better. The Drift Ghost has been redesigned to be a much smarter, and much more versatile camera -- it's really an all-in-one package that gives you all you need to shoot action video and to get unique shots that you wouldn't try with a more fragile camera. I know that most people get these for the extreme sports and action shots - and I do use this for things I couldn't get otherwise - but as an amateur videographer and documentarian I find that the Drift cameras are useful for lots of other things. They're easy to mount anywhere on just about anything and with the remote control they are extremely flexible to go places I couldn't with a camera in my hand. I've mounted them on a 12' paint pole and stuck it up and out the window of my car, for example, or raised them high over my house. I've gotten POV shots for documentary, and stuck them on the hood of my car with a suction mount to get a shot of someone driving.

The new Ghost shares a number of features with the Drift HD, which was (rather: is) already an excellent and powerful action camera. It has the same form function, the same replaceable Gorilla Glass lens cover, that can be rotated around so you can mount the camera where you need to and still get the orientation you like. They both come with a wearable wrist remote, that allows you to start and stop recording or shoot photos without needing to touch the camera. Both have an LCD screen that allows you to see what you're shooting to be sure you're getting what you want -- that's a feature that has always made the Drift cameras stand out among action cameras. Both allow you to shoot HD video, various modes; time lapse and photos. Both come with two rear covers, one that works as a secure seal against the elements, and one that allows for a USB input for charging and transferring video and an external microphone input. Both record to a micro SD card. Both come with several different mounting solutions, for securing the camera to a helmet, a motorcycle, a surf board, etc.

Here's what's new:

Better hardware, better lens -- The Ghost has revamped hardware, and a better lens, and as a result it shoots discernibly better -- noticeably sharper -- video, and it now does 960p in addition to 1080p, 720p and WVGA. It shoots 11MP stills and they look quite good. Another thing I really like is that now you can adjust the FOV (the "Field of View" or range of the shot) in each of the modes, from 90 degrees, to 127 or 170 degrees.

Easier firmware updates -- from time to time Drift updates the firmware on their cameras, usually in response to user feedback. They'll announce updates on their webpage or the Drift HD Facebook page, and they've always been easy to access: just drag the updated firmware onto the memory card. In the past, though, you had to go in and select an upgrade from the menu. With the Ghost, it automatically detects updates. When I'd put the new firmware on the card, and I turned it on, the Ghost immediately gave me a message that it was updating the firmware and then shut down when it was done. When I turned it on again, it was ready to go.

Much improved onboard microphone -- The audio, right out of the box, is much improved. With the older drifts the audio tended to be muffled and for decent sound you had to connect an external mike. With this one the audio is already good enough for most purposes even without an auxiliary microphone -- in fact I recorded all of the audio on the attached video using the onboard mike on the Ghost. I'm very happy with this improvement.

Two-way remote! -- The wrist remote is much improved. You can pair it with one or more cameras at once - which would be especially useful for getting multiple points of view on the same action. What's really exciting with the new design is that you can enable the "Remote Pairing" option and you get feedback on the remote itself as to what mode the camera is in (green for video, yellow for photo mode, purple for time-lapse mode, cyan for photo burst mode) and you can change the mode remotely.

Redesigned case, bigger screen, water proof -- The case is the same size as the Drift HD, but it's been redesigned, in a number of significant ways. The buttons have been moved to the side to give more space for an expanded 2" color LCD screen. There's room now to fit the full 1080p image on the screen as well as status and other indicators above and below. Another thing that makes me very happy is that this is waterproof to 3m right out of the box. If you plan to go deep, they sell a case; but for surfing and kiteboarding and kayaking and other surface water sports, this is good to go right out of the box. It also has an indicator light that shows when it's on and ready and what mode it's in and when it's recording (red).

Photoburst and simultaneous photo -- Now you can take photos while you're shooting video. Just press Menu on the camera itself or hit the Action button on the remote. The new photoburst mode is pretty excellent. It's hard to get the perfect action shot, but with this mode you can shoot up to 10 high quality (11MP) images per second, capturing a range of shots from which you can select the perfect one.

Video tagging -- this is an excellent new feature. HD video can be pretty memory intensive, and you don't really want to record everything. At the same time, sometimes something happens that's amazing and you wish you'd been recording. I had this happen a couple of months ago when I was shooting with the Drift HD720 in a waterproof case while I was floating down a river. I'd gotten a lot of underwater footage, of fish and turtles and birds (and of course my kids). But I was running out of memory, so I stopped recording, thinking I'd start up again later. Right then a river otter and its babies started swimming around us and under us, but by the time I got the camera back on and recording, they were gone. Video tagging lets you record continuously (and the battery lasts for about 3 hours of recording, so it would have been fine for that trip), without filling up the memory card. At any given moment, it only saves a specified interval of video that you've selected, between 10 seconds and 5 minutes. When you realize, after the fact, that you've shot something interesting, you can "tag" the video by pressing the "Menu" button on the camera or the "Action" button on the remote. Then the camera keeps the footage recorded just before and just after you tag it. If you had it set for a 10 second interval, the camera would keep the 10 seconds before you tagged it, the current 10 seconds and then ten more seconds for good measure. This would be excellent at, say, an extreme sports event where athletes were performing the same kinds of stunts over and over, and you didn't really want to get it all but then, every once in a while, something astonishing happens and you want to be sure you don't miss it.

Wi-Fi!! -- I'm very excited to try out this new feature, but as of yet I haven't been able to. The wi-fi turns on and I can connect to it from my computer, but I can't do much else. Drift promises a new connectivity app is coming soon for iOS and Android that will allow you to change camera settings, shoot and playback directly from the a mobile device - and will also allow you to download and share content directly. This will give a range of control that's unprecedented for this type of device. I can't wait to try it!

On the whole the new Ghost builds on the strong features of its predecessors but goes much farther to make this an extremely versatile package for a wide range of uses. This isn't just an upgrade but is a significant advance -- and as far as I can tell this one has features that no other action camera on the market shares. It's really a complete package that for many will do all they need right out of the box, without any additional accessories. (Although, I have to say if you buy one accessory the newly redesigned suction mount is pretty amazing and extremely useful.) The new Drift Ghost is an exciting camera whose potential I am just beginning to glimpse and I know I will make good use of it, and can't wait to see what other people do with it.

One minor issue -- the first few times I took this out in the sun, I noticed some condensation on the inside of the LCD screen. It went away as soon as I took the camera in doors, and, after a few times out I haven't noticed it anymore. I assume there was a bit of moisture trapped inside, but, again, the problem seems to have resolved itself now. I don't know if this is a universal problem, but this is just a heads up to new users in case they notice anything similar. I'll contact Drift and update the review if I see it again.

Note: I was given a sample of this product to try, with the understanding that I would post an honest and thorough review.

This is my second DRIFT camera and I use them on my motorcycle helmet. The first was an HD170, poor video quality and the rain killed it. Now let me say first what I love about the HD Ghost.

This camera is compact, offers a low, aerodynamic profile on top of my helmet and is water proof. It has a very convenient remote control I attach onto my handlebar (that is NOT rain proof...) that tells you when the camera is recording or isn't. It has a well designed, easy to acess audio input in its rear that allows to capture good sound despite the speed and wind so long as you hide the microphone in your jacket for instance (you get your engine hum but not the wind). Also the fast slide-in-and-clip base of the camera that you insert in the adhesive base (for instance) is so easy to use that it allows to put on and take off the camera with one hand as you ride (I store the camera in a top zippered pouched on top of my messenger bag in front of me: super convenient ! No other action cam is that convenient. Also the lens is easy to wipe clean of dirt and bugs as you ride (check often or get nasty surprises down the road looking at your footage...) and you can even easily change the lens if damaged.

Now what doesn't cut it with the DRIFTs. First the quality is flimsy, like the cameras were designed for quick planned obsolesence. One day, my Ghost HD simply refused to power on and that was it, after two (very long) trips. The HD170 never stopped working but the colors started turning bad with lots of weird purple hot spots. AND really bad: the exposure flickers like crazy as soon as the light becomes particularly bright, as if the iris couldn't settle for any particular set up. This prevents you from using entire chunks of your footage. On the other hand, picture quality is steady and awesome in low light, including night city lights.

Bottom line: DRIFT: WAKE UP ! You guys have the best action cam features on the market but what's up with the flickering iris and the lack of durability. I need to buy another camera now and I am REALLY debating because no camera out there is perfect. The DRIFT cameras could be...

Can I recommend it to someone else ? Frankly I just don't know what to say...

Very poor performance in low light

Comments about Drift HD Ghost Action Camcorder:

I own a Drift HD and use it for on-car and under water videos (with casing). I was happy with its video quality but not with its battery life which reaches only ca. 30 minutes in summer.

So I decided to buy the Drift Ghost mainly because of its better battery life, assuming its video quality is at least as good as the Drift HD. When I received and tested the Ghost I was shocked to find out that the video in low light is totally unacceptable. There were blue pixels and artifacts everywhere in dark areas of the video. Just like in 20-30 USD car dash-cams. Totally unacceptable for my use (even for youtube videos). Tried the new firmware update (I never understand why producers sell products that need firmware updates, do it right the first time and don't let me pay the price!) and nothing changed.

So I returned the Ghost. B&H was very helpful in this process and I got a new Drift Ghost soon. Tested it out in low light, only 10% better than the previous Ghost, I tried firmware update, it got ca. 10% better, so a total of 20% better than the one I returned but still no where close the quality of the Drift HD I owned. I also noted that the new Ghost's audio was worse than the one I returned (ther emust be a quality control challenge at Drift). The Drift HD is even worse in audio but since I use them in water casing which desn't help the sound, this is not a big issue for me.

I contacted B&H and they were ready to replace it again but having lost my trust for Drift products, I decided not to return. Now I use the camera as a car dash cam, where low light video is not a great issue (since the video will not be used on-line or anywhere else) and the battery life is as required (long).

I was avoiding using GoPros until now, mainly because of the physical build quality of Drift cameras which suited my use better, but now I will try the GoPro because of its better video quality particularly in low light.

Here some additional comments about the overall design of the Ghost: 1-Drift took a larger screen and larger battery (which are both welcome) and tried to fit in a slightly smaller body than the Drift HD. So they had to cut back on the space used for the electronics (I guess), hence the lower video quality. 2-The new LCD is larger but the images (text signs etc) are so small that the larger screen is not much better than the smaller Drift HD screen. Plus, the new screen is pysically protruding, feeling uncomfortable when holding the camera in hand during shoots.3-Due to the location of the battery, Drift had to put the rear cover screw on a latch which holds the battery. A heavy duty water proof threading/screw mounted on a flimsy latch is a bad design concept. It hasn't failed yet but doesn't look assuring. So I woundn't use the Ghost under water without the special UW casing.

Final words: rotating lens (very important for my use), very good battery life (does reach ca. 3 hours) good videos in daylight (haven't tested photo performance) and very bad videos in low light (not usable for my purposes). If I hadn't a Drift HD for comparison, I wouldn't be so firm in my comments. Too bad the HD doesn't have the Ghosts battery life.

Disappointed

Pros

  • Still Looking For One

Cons

  • Complicated To Operate
  • Manual Is Too General

Best Uses

  • Easy Home Movies

Comments about Drift HD Ghost Action Camcorder:

Buttons on the camera should have some color as black on black rubber makes them hard to distinguish.
LED lights are confusing: the manual says that solid red is recording but mine gives only blinking red and I never know if recording started or not.
Trying to get a still shot is also a trial and error process.
Not sure if they are all like that but the unit I got do not pair with remote. The manual does not mention pairing is needed and I found a line about it on the unit small menu. Tried to pair the remote several times and the message is "fail." So for now the remote is useless.
The camcorder seems to be well-built but the little things need some tuning.
I wouldn't buy it again.
No, I cannot recommend it at all.

Great Deal! Could not pass this up....

By Shooter

Comments about Drift HD Ghost Action Camcorder:

Like most I'm getting the B&H specials....this camera came up for $, and after checking it out then checking thru the web to see what it was going for elsewhere, I got it. (this was at least $ less then any other on that day, now it's about $ less, seems the camera has dropped in price from $ I guess it's getting ready to be replaced)ANYWAY, my other POV cam is an SJCam, also from B&H, wanted a cheap but functional GoPro knock off rather then spend $- on a nice GoPro with great specs, but I don't need a lot of the options for what I'm doing. This Drift Ghost HD is really nicely made, I like the form factor (it's going to work fine on the side of my motorcycle helmet), I REALLY like the remote, the bright flashing LED's give 100% feedback that the cam is running and in different modes. The IQ seems fine, it's not like my GH4 or D810, but who cares? It's what it is, and the day I need 4K + high frame rate I'll get a GoPro.The app for Android, forget it, it doesn't really work, Drift has gotten back to me admitting it doesn't work yet. Come on Drift, it's not like there are a hundred platforms out there, just get it working. I'm at 5.0.1, and I have actually gotten it to work a little, but mostly it doesn't. The remote is what saves this, framing on the screen and going thru menu settings on screen is what saves this, and for the most part using a phone to control a POV on a motorcycle or my sailboat is not realistic, the remote is. The optional back covers, one waterproof (I'm not taking this underwater), one weather resistant with port openings for mic & USB is nice, the rotating lens / sensor is nice, the gorrilla glass on the lens is nice (wish there was a nose cap for this though, I'm kinda obsessive about keeping lenses clean and protected)I assume the price on this will drop at some near point as whatever new model replaces this in the Drift line...if you need faster then 1080 / 30p, then this isn't for you.

This is an excellent action camera. The preview screen is great for making sure your video is going to capture what you intend. The WiFi capability is also good expecially in conjunction with the app. The only downside is the app freezes up my phone at times, which is not an issue with the camera but the app. I also wish it would come with more attachments, however that does not take away from the fact that this camera takes wonderful videos and has some very nice features such as playback and view right from the camera. I would definitely recommend it.

What's good:Picture quality in HD mode is very clear. The lens seems to be of high quality. The remote control is convenient and comes with the camera. No external case is needed for weather-proofing or under-water shots. The case is rugged.Colored LED indicates mode.Comes with mounting hardware.Battery is replaceable and lasts for a good amount of time.iOS app is free. Not so good:User interface is clumsy and many functions require numerous button presses. For example, there are four icons to show the camera mode and one icon is enlarged by a little to show the current mode. Unless you toggle between modes, it's not immediately apparent which mode is current because the icon sizes are not substantially different. The device is large compared to a JVC Adixxion, which is also a shock/waterproof action cam.Time lapse feature just takes a bunch of pictures, which you then need to somehow stitch together to make a video. The iOS app crashes and loses connectivity.Slow motion function is just OK.

      Very solid choice

Comments about Drift HD Ghost Action Camcorder:

This camera is a solid choice if you like the form factor which is different from go pro.... Which I do. This mounts very well with standard goggle mount strap for helmet mount applications. The on cam menu is pretty easy to learn. The ipod control app is good. This sends excellent wifi streams to have you start recording from remote ipod. The included remote works well to to activate and turn off recording. The 1080p is crisp and lively. The specs are accurate. The download to your iPod is a little glitchy but pick your video you want to download to tour iPod via wifi download it and quit the program. Restart to do the next video. iOSit takes just a second so worth it otherwise it struggles to start the next task and may quit. Download to computer via cable the ad card shows up as a disk and you download. Simple as that. There are a ton more features I haven't tested yet but I'll get to it. I was skiing and tubing all day and my 12 year operated it on his helmet all day. Figured it out himself. I noticed no fogging on any of the videos unless his brother blew on the lens cover purposely. Brothers!! It cleared in seconds and needed no manual clearing. This thing is as its specs describe and offers wifi link. Pretty good. Very pleased. Only negative is the bug in the iOS software which requires a quit and restart after a download to keep things running smoothly. Really almost a 10 certainly over a 9. Hope that helps

Great little camera. I bought it to use on my sailboat. I will not take my Nikon D7100on my boat. Great buy at $[$]. I also will use when I canoe and kayak.

Comments about Drift HD Ghost Action Camcorder:

The camera performs well, has many useful features (video, stills, burst mode), and the build quality is excellent. Unlike GoPro, it comes with several accessories, and additional ones will not break the bank. Also, battery life is more than three times the GoPro's. The video and still quality is very good. The screen is on the side, or on the top when you turn the camera. Like old twin-lens reflex cameras, that allows you to hold it at waist height and take candid pix unobtrusively. The menu system takes only a few minutes to learn. If there are any negatives, I'd say you have to push the buttons quite firmly, but that's a minor issue. Even with the internal microphone, the sound is pretty good. I have yet to use an external mic.
