          • Processing RAW images

Comments about Capture One Pro 7 (Mac/Win):

With the announced demise of Aperture by Apple, I went on the hunt for a replacement. I am reluctant to go down the path of Lightroom/Adobe and find my self tethered to a network-based solution as am amature. It just isn't clear that it is worth the monthly payout when I'm not generating income from it.

After a bit of looking around, I stumbled on Capture One Pro 7. The more I read, the more impressed I was with the quality of the image it produces. I downloaded the trial and made comparisons with images processed in Aperture and in COP7. I was really impressed by the results. Not only were the images showing much clearer detail, The number and intensity of adjustment required is nearly always smaller with COP7.

Although I'm still learning how to really be effective with them, I really like the ability to mask and make local adjustments. This is a big improvement from Aperture.

As an test, I went back several years in my files and found an image with lots of cloudy sky in Bolivia taken with D2xs. When processed with Aperture, the best I could do was to make an image that looked over-processed and over sharpened or one that was dull and uninteresting. With COP7 I was able to very easily produce an image that looked many time better. It was correctly sharpened by default (COP7 knows about the camera), and the HDR adjustment are really fantastic. I can recover highlights and shadows with ease. The detail I can recover continues to amaze me.

As others have pointed out, COP7 is not the tool for organizing photos that Aperture (or Lightroom) is but is it adequate. I have hopes that this will only get better with time.

I am reprocessing recent photos and finding gems I thought were uninspired and drab. I uses a D800E and a Fuji x100s and the software was an excellent job on processing both into undistorted, sharp images by default. I find that I am excited again by the pictures I have taken. I am able to generate a version that now comes much closer to my original vision than I ever could with Aperture.

The transition has been as easy as I could have hoped. Since I store all my images as referenced files inn Aperture, I can connect both Aperture and COP7 to the same hard drive of images at the same time to be able to compare or use the Aperture slide show for older projects without problem.

The major think I find confusing about the cataloging is that Aperture only had what COP& called the her version of the catalogs so that everything was organized from the beginning in the order and way you wanted and you never really had to deal with the physical storage on the hard drive. COP7, on the other hand, lists the disk folders in the system order and you much create the Aperture kind of structure by hand after the fact. This adds work to the process. I'm hoping that with practice, I'll find this settles down to a reasonable process as I bring in one projects at a time and sort it.

Another bit of the learning curve is that it is not compatible with Nik software. I used this extensively with Aperture. I have already found that numerous images that were processed as HDR images in Nik now are simple recovered from one exposure in COP7 and take multiple images for this reason is much less necessary or useful. I'm still learning about the way to use the B&W conversion, but as I gain practice, I find that many images are as good or better than those processed with Silver Effects Pro.

It is slower to process that Aperture but things are slow with a D800E size image. I don't find this to be a major issue.

The other complaint often mentioned is the price. I was able to buy it from B&H on sale for ½ price, so I have no complaint there.

Overall, this is amazing software. I only give 4 stars because of the shortcomings in the cataloging. If you want the best images possible, get this software!

Comments about Capture One Pro 7 (Mac/Win):

Got this while on special as wanted to compare to Lightroom. So far, finding offering very similar features. Although a learning curve after using Lightroom a long time, the overall feel is more intuitive to me.

Tethered shooting seems much better as well.

Catalog features, tagging, other features suvh as books and slide show etc is a bit light compared to Lightroom. If deciding between the two, strongly recommend to trial both and see which meets your needs.

Both RAW conversions are formidable. Overall, I'd say this is poorer value than Lightroom with respect to price and feature.

Comments about Capture One Pro 7 (Mac/Win):

I have been a loyal Lightroom user for years and now believe that C1Pro7 does all I want and way more than LR.

Now that I am doing more studio work I love the tethered shooting capability and with the IOS app your client can review images as they are captured.

Give a trial run and see what you think.
