The color accuracy and the sharp detail of the D5200 is stunning. See examples below. I've owned the D70, D60, D5000, and the D5100 (all purchased at B&H) and this is by far the best of them all. The autofocus is quick and changing the various settings is very easy.

A couple of the reviewers have complained that there is no histogram when reviewing the pictures. If you go to the playback menu and chose display options you can select various options to be displayed, one of which is the histogram. To see the histogram press the down arrow on the wheel around the OK button. Each time you press you will see one of the options that you chose.

The only thing that I wish this camera had is a watercolor special effect. The Sony RX100 has it and it creates some spectacular artistic images.

Bottom line, the D5200 is awesome!

This would be a great family camera and backup camera expect for one problem, when making videos the auto focus annoyingly hunts even in shots with little or no motion. The auto focus is also slow to respond to scene changes. The resultant videos continually go in and out of focus. The Nikon D5200 was purchased as a backup body for a D300 and as a primary video camera. It replaced a D5000 which has the same sensor as the D300 and can do 720P video. Since it is designed as a menu-based amateur camera unlike the D300, the D5200 like the D5000 has its limitations when replacing the D300. But, if the D300 quits in the Egyptian desert, the D5200 serves and takes nice still pictures. Like the new D7100, the D5200 has the latest 24 megapixel, higher ISO sensor. At the moment the D5200 is the lowest cost Nikon camera with this sensor. It takes good still pictures and the menu system is minimal making it easy to configure and use but limits camera flexibility. One interesting drawback, there appears to be no way to change how long the display stays on. The D5200 does have the ability to compensate for lens distortion which is a handy feature when using super zoom lenses like the 18-200mm and 18-300mm. Fully automatic point and shoot video is problematic because of the poor autofocus capability of the D5200 in video mode (it works fine taking still pictures). Besides periodic hunting for the right focus point and slow focusing, the D5200 has a hard time maintaining focus when zooming out to telephoto or panning a complex scene. You can get very good video results using manual focus but that limits the kinds of scenes that can be shot in video. Using auto focus in aperture preferred mode (A) also works if the aperture is set to F8 or higher increasing the depth of field. This will reduce or eliminate auto focus hunting but the camera has a slower response to change in light levels with a fixed aperture in video mode making panning problematic. Fortunately, the D5200's high ISO range permits setting small apertures even in relatively low light. Except for auto focus the D5200 video features are impressive. It offers a full video range from standard through full high definition with frame rates up to 60 and it has a built-in stereo microphone, something only found on the D7100. When it stays in focus, the D5200 takes excellent videos with good dynamic range and white balance and nice sound. The videos look as good as the still pictures. The D5200 was a video disappointment but I am keeping it.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I always do a ton of research before buying gear, and I finally decided on the 5200 as an upgrade to the 3100. I've had it for about 10 months now and I have not regretted the purchase. The major upgrades I was looking for were better autofocusing and better IQ in low light situations. This camera delivers much better than the 3100. I've taken it on a New England vacation, done many portrait sessions, and a couple of weddings and it's performed well in all settings. The only con so far has been the relatively short battery life, but no biggie if you have a backup! For the price, it's worth the upgrade.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I purchased the D-5200for a special light weight camera to be used with my existing Nikon lenses for aerial images. I am finding the image quality and color to be excellent. I also love the tilting LCD screen that is missing on my Pro DSLRs.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I use this camera for my advanced photo students in a high school Commercial Photo class. The students quickly figure out the differences between it and the Nikon D3000-3200's causing a high demand for the D5200. It has a higher frame per second rate that is great for getting action shots. Its Bracketing features and higher ISO settings help with indoor lower light images which dominate our rainy winter days in the Northwest. It also allows for higher quality low light images at school events in the gym, night football games and drama performances. This has helped improve the images we collect for the year book. The movable LCD screen helps students compose and view low or odd angle shots with out putting their faces on the wet ground. The Nikon interface and controls are intuitive and easy to teach and learn. I also just purchase the 5200 bodies and then upgrade the lenses to the Nikon 40mm macro or 35mm 1.8, or a 2.8 zoom. We get great images. I would recommend not buying the kit lenses and upgrading right from the start with better glass.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Received as replacement for kit body that had display fail 4 days after receipt. Has worked well over the 2+wks since receiving. Possibly kit body was odd lemon; only time will tell. Camera functions nicely, little disappointed with lag and function of using live display focus/shooting. Possibly just will take time to acclimate to this camera. Mostly happy with purchase.

In the past, I have done everything from macro photography, formation-flight pictures (while taking) and telephoto-style photography from my D100...and this one is far better for all. The only thing that I did not find out that the zoom feature ONLY works on the internal-motor (s or f) lens, not the standard g-lens. I would purchase this camera again in a heartbeat! No questions asked.

Only have it a few weeks, one former Nikon AF lens was not compatible. Did not know that, but with the short lens, lots of cool features and functions, very fast, love the large, moveable screen. Will have more thoughts once my new lens arrives.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This was bought to replace my Pentax K-x (from 2009). After setting it up and taking some test pics I was immediately blown away by the iso performance (and of course the rest of the camera). On my old camera I could see noise at 1600 and greater, and based on recommendations I set my AutoISO top range at 6400. After test images I found that 6400 is in fact stable. This means using a wide open 1.8 aperture I can get excellent pics in low light without having too slow a shutter speed. Aside from this, the camera is a dream. I really enjoy settings like min ISO shutter speed setting, and the bracketing. The auutofocus is great, and overall I love the new camera. I bought the 35 f/1.8 and 18-200 for starters and am very happy with my setup. (I also followed Ken Rockwell's guide for setting it up and would recommend this. He is a bit over the top at times, but this guide was spot on)

Even though it is a bit daunting getting through the instruction manual, the camera takes great pictures. I especially bought this camera for the video aspect as I have 2 additional NIKONS that aren't video capable. I'd recommend this camera to anyone who desires to take still and videos.

A little relearning where things are from the previous camera but have not had one letdown on any of the pictures Ive taken. Enjoy having the EC bracketing.
Nikon makes a great camera, B&H makes shopping for cameras and accessories pleasant. Great service!

I use it for sports photography and it works great! The sports mode is great, and I can use it for portraits as well!

I have a Nikon D3100 and the D5200 is a great step up. The buttons are in better places and the movable LCD screen is great.

Comments about Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I wanted a lighter weight body and did not need all the features of my Pro Nikon body. I am very pleased with the capabilities of this camera. Besides being light weight, it has straight forward features that fit 99 percent of my pro shooting. I do recommend it highly.
