When the HS10 first came out I snatched that up to compliment my DSLR gear. After discovering the convenience and versatility of not having to haul a bulky camera and lenses around I slowly migrated to exclusively using the HS10. We mountain bike, kayak, and hike a lot so the extra gear was a drag. Being able to seamlessly zip from a super macro shot to zooming in 720mm was GREAT! The DSLR was collecting dust.Watched the newer HS line come out with the new features but still waited. When the HS50EXR was announced I thought the updates were worth the leap. I actually sold off my DSLR and Tamron glass to get the $$$ for this. Many delays in release but arrived quick when it did get out.Being proficient in the HS line helped me quickly come up to speed and I could just rant about the differences between the HS10 and the HS50EXR but will keep on track for the HS50EXR comments. First my perspective. There are a bazillion photographers out there from cell phone cameras to thou$ands in gear, but only a handful that actually make a living off it. I don't expect to be one of them. I share photos with friends, share places we go, and capture family events. I don't aspire to make a living with this but I have managed to get shots published in calendars, magazines, advertisements, websites and a few awards. Not to make money, just because I like to know others appreciate them. They're not being made into posters or going to be published in National Geographic so regardless of what people think, photography is more in the eye than in the pocketbook (i.e. great cameras don't make great photographers). I really think too many people look at their camera gear as a status symbol more than an artistic tool. Okay, that out of the way.The HS50EXR was touted as a super fast auto focus and I can attest that it does great. It snaps into focus fast and can adjust on the fly. Even in macro modes (which I use a lot) it flies into focus. The lens is the best feature. From 24-1000mm you can capture the eyes of a dragon fly and within seconds capture the expression on an eagle's face across the lake. The manual zoom lets you control your viewing field quick and quietly. The range is amazing and the stabilization makes hand held held shots crisp and clear. Even has several levels of digital zoom on top of the optical. The rear display is excellent but lacks one element, the ability to tilt up and down while directly against the back of the camera (which the HS10 would do). But flip it out to the side and it still does it, just not as cleanly. But the ability to flip it completely around so the display is facing the camera and the rear of the display is facing out is GREAT! Protects the screen from bumps and scratched when not in use (even though I recommend a screen protector just in case). And flipped out to the side it can be fully articulated. The eyepiece viewer is better than the HS10 but the focus adjustment is a bit too free and bumping it knocks the focus out.Was worried about switch from the HS10 using AA batteries to the dedicated battery pack of the HS50EXR but so far the battery has vastly outlasted my shooting sessions. Have a couple backups to take along just in case. Now for a biggie to me, burst shooting. The HS10 would shoot (I believe) 7fps and if you captured a half dozen you'd sit and wait 20 seconds for them to write to the card. The HS50EXR will capture at 11fps for as long as you hold the shutter and after releasing the shutter button the shots are on the card within a second at the most. What a blessing!Sitting the HS50EXR beside my old HS10 you can see the design changes. The HS50EXR looks and feels like a quality DSLR, fits the hand well and has just enough heft to keep you steady without weighing you down. There are a lot of new settings on the HS50EXR that I am just starting to experiment with but what I know so far has a lot of smiles being cast. Anyone who doesn't want to field change lenses and haul massive gear around but wants the full time versatility of shooting macro to super zoomed should seriously consider the HS50EXR.

The camera handles well, very comfortable in the hands. The user interface is intuitive and very efficient. Image quality is good if you don't enlarge the image too much. Softness is noticeable as well as a fair amount of noise, even at ISO 100. A pleasant surprise is that at the maximum focal length image quality does not deteriorate. Image quality is quite acceptable if you don't compare it to a quality DSLR.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR Digital Camera:

I was undecided between Canon SX50HS ,Panasonic FZ200 And Fuji HS50EXR , After searching online for few days,I bought Fuji and i'm not disappointed. The manual zoom is amazing, anf the electronic viewfinder also, plus have diopter and eye sensor. the auto focus is very fast, and the battery live is very good. Note: i bought another two batteries aftermarket an I took over 1100 pictures with one.I used mostly electronic viewfinder and short continuous shooting.I LOVE THIS CAMERA

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR Digital Camera:

I decided to downsize literally & pricewise from DSLRs. I was attracted to the superzoom type camera for their versitility. I really liked the Fuji for its manual zoom & focus rings. It's a large camera but with a built in lens of 24-1000mm (35equiv)I don't have to tote around multiple lenses to have a wide range of focal lengths and don't have to stop in the middle of a shoot to change lenses.
What I hadn't expected are that there are aspects of the camera like better than my 2009 Sony DSLR. Little things like the control dail on the Fuji I like better than the small adjustment wheel on a Sony. I have been super impressed with Fujis Low Light Pro Mode. Also the Fujis built in flash is well metered and quite useful. Often not on DSLRs.
Will the smaller sensor have the RAW quality of a APS sensor? No, obviously that isn't going to happen. But you will get quality detailed pics. And that happens even at very long focal lengths. I have been pleasantly surprised at how sharp images are at 800+mm hand held using smart modes.
The body is plastic but feels very solid and natural in the hand. The battery is a real champ. I can shoot 3-400 shots and it would still read at 3/4s charge. You will need photo processing software, as Fuji software isn't very complete. I haven't used the video feature yet. Wildlife is one of the favorite uses as shown in Flickr user groups.

I bought this for the times when I wanted to make sure I had a camera if I needed one but did not want to carry a DSLR. I've actually enjoyed this camera, and when I use it within its limits it performs very well. What primarily made me choose this over other bridge cameras was the manual zoom, When I view this camera for what it is and what it does well, I'm very pleased with it.

I researched superzoom cameras at great length before choosing this one. It was not the newest on the market, nor does it have the longest zoom, but I love it so far. I love the manual zoom ring and picture quality is excellent even at full zoom. I would highly recommend it.

Not too heavy, but I will have to read about all of the available settings. That might take a while, but pretty easy to use out of the packaging!

This is my second Fuji camera. The first was an S7000 that I bought from B&H Photo about 7 or 8 years ago. I had excellent service from this machine. The camera started developing problems, I sent for repair, but it was too old and not economical. I then decided to buy this one. I feel for what I paid, I did a great bargain. It does everything that I wanted including the hot shoe. The only problem I found is that is does not have a screw type mechanical remote shutter. You can purchase one as option, but it is an electronic that hooks up in the P/C port via a long cable. Oh well, you can't have it all. This summer, I will use it in Las Vegas, Death Valley and other places I'm planning to travel.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR Digital Camera:

I have done some limited testing in outdoor lighting with the cam, and it performs well within it's class. Above 32X , pics are a little soft when detailed , but up to 8x10 I see no artifacts to the eye. It clearly outperformed my Olympus SP820UZ. I have not tested it indoors or in low light yet, so no comment there. Keep in mind this is not DSLR quality due to the smaller sensor, but for the price it can't be beat. Many options on the camera allow you to be creative. I find the EXR auto and auto mode work well. The performance such as focus, IS, metering, etc works well. The Q button is a great feature allowing quick adjustments. Viewfinder is very bright , and the articulating display is great. Manual Zoom is superb. I bought the Ruggard Commando 25 case here, and the camera fits nicely with my charger , batteries and accessories. Overall am very pleased. Looking forward to taking it with me to Alaska.

I was looking for a better camera but cannot afford a DSLR. I asked my dad (who knows about cameras) do the research for me and he selected the FinePix HS50EXR. I have a lot to learn about the camera and am confident that my dad made a great choice for my budget and the types of photos I desire.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR Digital Camera:

After going through lengthy research on bridge cameras I bought the HS50 over the Panasonic FZ200 and Canon SX50. The Panasonic has a great lens and the Canon is a good all rounder, but speed in shooting is a high priority for me. I shoot a lot of action sports in and outdoors; day and night in poorly lit gymnasiums and high school football fields. The Fuji just does a better job. The 42X is long enough, I seldom go beyond 35X when shooting football games and since light is always a problem I usually use either a Sunpak or Sigma external flash on the shoe. The same ones I use with my bigger, heavier Canon 40D slr. I use the Fuji when I'm shooting out to midfield because a fast F 2.8 long telephoto is a bit out of my price range at the moment. This Fuji had all the features I've been looking for. Admittedly the sensor can't compare to the good Canon and Nikon bodies, but the speed of the Fuji is hard to beat. The daytime continous shooting mode is superb. When I use it to get a player sliding into second base I always come up with a pretty good shot. Isn't modern technology great. My Canon produces sharper pictures that can be blown up to poster size, but the Fuji can easily print to 8 and a half by 11" with sharp results. It works for the newspaper I write and shoot for. The focus is great until you get out to the maximum 42X range. I use a monopod when I know I'm going to be reaching that far out. Whatever works right. I'm just getting into the internal editing features of the camera and tried the camera mode indoors without any extra light and was amazed with the results. This camera is a real powerhouse. If you want to get an idea just download the 120 page manual from Fuji. Don't print it out just scan through it and you'll soon realize just how suffisticated this camera is. What ever you want to do, it can do it, short of those poster size prints. I highly recommend this as a backup camera to a slr or a beginners camera who really wants to learn about digital photography.

upgraded from HS20exr, considerable faster in all respects, focus, processing, writing to SD card, etc.Manual focus with focus assist also much better.Hight built quality.Q menu extremely handy, was worried I would miss the HS20 direct access buttons but was not the case.Swivel screen very good for creative angles and selfies. Battery life also better, battery is smaller and lighter than 4AAsVideo focus is sharp not buggy like with the HS20.Jpeg quality in low light is better, less noise at high ISOs.If you were thinking to upgrade just do it won't regret it, specially now that price dropped !

The features of this camera are many and lots of them are useful. The only Con with this camera for me is quality of the RAW files. They do not come close to the quality of the JPEG files straight from the camera.

I've had this camera since Christmas. Learning to take advantage of its capabilities is proving interesting. Since I live in the northeast I look forward to working with the camera in milder weather.

Having read that a National Geographic photographer had used one was a very convincing testimony for the FUJIFILM HS50EXR.

I look forward to the time when I am proficient with the many functions available.
