Comments about Tascam DP-006 6-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

Sometimes setting up a protools session and rigging/connecting everything takes just enough time to make a fresh idea evaporate before being able to capture it. That's what makes this little tool so useful ; inside about 45 seconds you are ready to record. The built in condenser mics are very respectable for an acoustic guitar, and they are the default inputs when a new song is set up - so you save even more precious seconds to 'strike while the iron is hot'. I experimented with bouncing and not a speck of sound quality is lost , even with ridiculous layers.
The whole point of this little device is to write songs , and as long as you have a set of headphones you are good to go (the first thing I tried was some goofing around with just my voice, so even an instrument isn't completely necessary). My only complaints are the lack of backlighting for the LCD display, and the fact that it doesn't come with a power supply. I took my chances with a SD card that wasn't on the 'tested media' list on the Tascam website and I've had a couple of crashes that weren't catastrophic ... But with any digital media it's always important to save and save and backup and save again. Exporting songs and individual tracks to a computer seems to work fine ....
This thing is ridiculously small , in a good way, so bringing it to any band practice/party/dashboard of your car is no problem, given that it can be used with 4 AA batteries. The manual is laid out quite well and is easy to follow in those few instances when you actually have to look something up.
      Conclusion: an indispensable songwriting tool
