This has got to be one of the best lenses in this price category! I have owned both the 70-200 2.8 II is and now the non-is version and I have been impressed with both on my 5D Mk2. I sold off my IS version a few years ago when careers changed and I felt like it was too much money to have sitting around in a bag hardly being used. Now things have changed and it was time for another long lens, and of course I spent many late nights reading reviews trying to justify the 1000+ bump to IS, or trying to convince myself that this was the way to go. I really feel like this was the right call and I have zero regrets. The key to using this lens, handheld or otherwise, is nothing new, you need to shoot with proper technique. Shutter speeds above 1/320, proper support of the lens while shooting, proper breathing technique, bump your iso if the camera can handle it, and overall common sense, if you can use a set of sticks go for it but it is by no means necessary. Obviously this lens is built like a tank and will take its toll on you lugging it around all day, you can eliminate some of that strain with a proper shoulder strap. I know when I bought the IS version a few years ago I loved it and I think I spent too much time on the internet listing to people tell me its a must have, well its not. Harkin back to the '"olden days" of film and long lens photography, we did not need Photoshop, we did not need IS or VR, we needed good camera technique to lock down a great shot. Buy this lens and practice, it will make you a better photographer. Just my 2 cents.

Just finished using this lens and think it's time to submit my review especially to compare it with it's siblings.

I think this focal-range should be in every photography's case. It's so useful in many scenarios. From portrait to wildlife to event photography. One of the best values for sure.

But this lens in particular feels like the outsider. It has the focal length and build quality. But two big problems: image-sharpness and lens-weight. And really, it's the former.

Even when you've gotten the sharpest image possible this lens is capable of, you're going to need to sharpen in post. I use f2.8 - f5.6 with the lens and I always need to sharpen quite a bit. It's not horrible. But for the money and reputation, you should expect better.

And this thing heavy. If you're hand-holding this lens for a couple of hours or more, your arm will get tired. And I'm a pretty strong guy. Then it's tough to get a clean shot because you're getting fatigued.

If you must get a Canon 70-200mm 'L' lens and could live without f2.8, and you probably can, get the non-stabilized f4 version. Except for the extra stop, I think the f4 version is a superior lens. Much less expensive too.

The 2.8L IS II is the big bad brother and it's sharpness is amazing. Only problem is that it's even heavier than the non-IS 2.8L and 2x the price. But if you're absolutely set on this focal length and aperture, save for this version. Or rent it for paid gigs until you can afford it. It's a lens you can easily keep for 10 years. It's worth the investment if you use it a lot.

I want to like this lens so much. But it's performance and weight issues keep it far behind many great alternatives even outside of Canon.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I just started using this lens and it's my first telephoto/zoom lens. I had to save some money and not get the IS, but this lens is amazing even without it. I'm sure the IS is worth the extra money, but the price jump was too much for me. I use with a tripod and the pictures are just as crisp.

The auto-focus is a little slow but I think it's the way zoom lenses are. The case, caps, and hoods are just what you'd expect from Canon; amazing.

This is the first L series lens that I have bought, this lens wonderful. I have only had this lens for a couple of weeks but I have taken over 1k photos with it. The quality of the pictures have improved from the ones that I have taken with the previous lens that I had. The focus is very fast. The only downside is that this lens does not have image stabilization but not a problem, I just couldn't afford the the 70-200 2.8 with image stabilization. I'm using this lens on the 7D Mark II and the two together are great.

        By Kat

        from Amherst, Va

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

For the weight of this lens, I tend to feel that my EF 70-300 USM can produce almost as good quality. The 70-200 is slightly faster which provides great shots of water (I do swimming sports Photography often), just don't know if it's one I will use regularly. Was hoping for better low light clarity.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I was very particular to get 70-200 to my kit. Since my budget was very less, I went with non-IS version and used it for a low light bday party. I see little bit of shake in all my photos, it could be because of low light , even though I was using speedlite. I have decided return this back and get the IS version, so that I don't give my clients a blurred photo. The range is real good that I did not use my 24-105 this time except for very few wide shots.

I used this lens for gymnastics meets where speed is needed to capture images even at 6400 or 8000 ISO. The f/2.8 allows this for me. Really pleased and don't need the IS L II model of this lens for what I'm shooting at 1/1250 or faster.

Well, I thought about purchasing this lens for a long time and I am so glad I finally did.

I set the lens to 100 mm focal length and took photos of my daughter with it and then took the same photo with my other Canon zoom lens at the same focal length, shutter, etc., and the difference was phenomenal...way more detail, clarity, and natural color rendition with the "L" lens. I didn't pay the extra money for the IS lens because most of my photography is in well-lit scenarios but I have been able to hand hold this lens at 15th of a second and get some awesome images with just a distant light bulb as the light source...my subject movement was more of a problem than the camera movement.

Love this lens, but didn't realize it was not weather resistant until it was too late. Took this out in a drizzle, destroyed my 5d ii body when the water got inside. Don't take this one out in the rain or dusty/sandy conditions. If I would have realized it I would have bought the more expensive version with the weather sealing. My fault, not the lens'.

I have been taking pictures of my sister's softball games for 3 years with the 60D and the EF-S 55-250 IS and got some good shots during the day, but f5.6 was unusable at night. I decided to try out this lens and have been blown away with the sharpness and speed of this lens. No more unusable night shots or slow focus issues for me. Make sure you have a monopod, because this lens gets heavy after a while.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I laugh when I hear comments like you have to have the IS version of this lens. With todays high ISO performance with virtually all DSLR's, I.S. just not needed.

I would recommend this lens to anyone who is serious about photography and make sure you find the light.

Here's a sample of such a photograph with this incredible lens.

Great lens for a reasonable price! Built like a tank. Mainly used for indoor/outdoor sports. No issues so far. Love it!!!

Bought this lens for my husband and he loved it. The quality is great. The lenses are a little long but love how it expands internally so less chances of dirt and dust getting inside it.
