Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Except for when I'm shooting the formal family portraits, this lens has quickly become surprisingly my second most used lens throughout the day when I'm photographing a wedding. I've formerly used five different lenses during the many parts of a wedding day, and this new addition has quickly moved to the #2, second only to my 70-200 f/2.8. Extremely versatile in so many situations!

How you use the product: Used primarily for street shooting and landscapes.
Things that are great about it: 1) Light weight, 2) Quality construction, 3) Great image quality when stopped down.
Things that aren't so great about it: 1) Edge sharpness suffers when wide open.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

This is my daytime landscape and wide-walkaround lens for lightweight travel, paired with my Nikon D610.

It's pretty darn sharp wide open, has your standard nice Nikkor color rendition, and is oh so much lighter than the 16-35mm f4 VR (not to mention considerably less expensive!).

Construction is plastic, but it still feels well built and balances well on a D610. Not everything has to be made of metal!

77mm filter threads are nice, as all my filters are 77mm (no step up rings!).

I could deal with this lens being a straight f4, but it's not a dealbreaker. Just stop it down to f4.5 during daylight hours if you plan on zooming quite a bit (in good light, of course).

This lens' minor distortion and vignetting don't bother me. Every wide angle has distortion! Deal with it.

If you need the absolute best Nikon wide-angle, go with the 14-24mm f2.8 of course. But if you don't fancy lugging that expensive monster around, the 18-35mm f3.5-4.5G ED should be on your short list.

              Recommended!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

I bought this for my D800 after being unsatisfied with the quality of the Nikkor AFD20mm f2.8. That 20mm had been OK on a D700 camera, but on the D800 it showed enormous field curvature at any focus distance less than infinity as well as massive CA towards the edges of the frame. I had resisted trying the 18-35G because most respectable testing sites online didn't show much difference in ranking of the 2 lenses. However, in real world use, the 18-35G shows vast improvements in those areas as well as more vibrant color rendition. I wish now that I hadn't waited so long for this purchase. That a variable aperture zoom can provide such a noticeable overall improvement in image quality over an older-design fixed focal length lens is a testament to modern design techniques. The only downside to the zoom from a landscape-shooter's perspective is that it has slightly more barrel distortion, but Photoshop cleans it up nicely for natural scenes (not sure it that's true about architecture, haven't tried yet). I also did a comparison with Nikon's 24-70 f2.8 at 31mm (tripod mounted, mirror up, manual focus, etc.) and found that the 18-35 had slightly lower contrast, but with some unsharp mask applied to bring out the details there is very little difference. Not really a fair test anyway as it's comparing the weaker end of the 18-35 with the stronger end of the 24-70 optically. As a landscape shooter who uses tripods, I am glad Nikon produced this lens without VR, an unwanted expense and increase in bulk that dissuaded me from their 16-35. This 18-35 is compact and lightweight enough for even the most rugged hikes. Build quality looks good enough to last a long time if you take care of this lens, and it mounted on my D800 with a reassuring smoothness.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Overall I am very pleased with this lens, which I use on my D800E for street photography, interiors and some architecture. The zoom range is more versatile than I would have thought. It is rapidly becoming my favorite lens. The lens is quite sharp but suffers from vignette and barrel distortion when used at the wide end of the zoom range and/or maximum aperture. Close focus (less than 10 inches at 18mm!) further exaggerate these effects. Distortion is very well corrected by the in-camera firmware under all conditions. The new user should insure that Nikon's latest distortion correction firmware is installed and activated in the camera – this is version L.009. On the D800, these functions are activated on the "Shooting Menu"; I set the vignette control to "High". JPEG images are corrected for both vignette and barrel distortion. RAW images are only corrected for barrel distortion. Vignette is easily corrected manually in ACR. ACR does not have this lens in its distortion correction data base, which is another reason to use the in-camera firmware. DxO Optics does have the correction module available and it corrects both vignette and barrel distortion in RAW images.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

I use it on my D600 when I need an ultra-wide zoom lens. It is relatively small, lightweight, and performs well. It does not have VR and its a trifle slow. However, I can always crank up the D600's ISO to compensate for the lens's relatively small maximum apertures. The lens is adequately sharp and distortion is relatively small. On the whole, I do not regret buying this lens rather than the 16-35mm - its less expensive and more compact than the 16-35mm.

I tried this lens as I desperately want a lighter and smaller option. The 14-24 is just awe-inspiring, but it is 2 lbs and its huge glass attracts attention. I love it. The 16-35 is almost as good (not quite!), less expensive and 1/2 lb lighter; it is still big and heavy. I take it sometimes when I can't stomach dragging all that weight around. I tested the 18-35, and even at optimal f 5.6 and f 8 conditions, it does not take a lot of pixel peeping to see that this lens is not quite as sharp as the other two. If you don't consider your d800 to be a medium format camera, you may be happy, it is a good lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Very, very sharp lens, throughout the image range I care about (I don't check obscurely far edges; I check the primary subject, where the focus is applied--only makes sense).

Combined with the D800's ability to tune auto-focus to each specific lens in the bag, this lens comes out as sharp as anything, with just a very minor sku of the body's auto-focus in my case. I was able to optimize for both congerging from too near and from too far, and sharpness was identical. And focusing manually can even improve on that, if the hand is steady enough.

And it does all that while weighing nothing, which I love. Considering the light materials (which I have no doubt are still quite strong), I almost get the feeling the design target was to create a kit lens, but that the combination of excellent ED glass and the impressive sharpness surprised everyone. Probably not, but the end result is a VERY light lens that is absolutely pro-worthy.

They say the best lens is useless if you don't have it with you; this lens will never convince me it's too heavy to include in the bag on long, arduous treks, and it will never disappoint me in sharpness or image quality. The only way I'd ever set it aside is if I were to drop the thing. :)

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

After reading lens reviews,it was a choice between the 18-35mm or the Nikon 16-35mm VR lens.
I chose the 18-35mm over the 16-35mm mainly because of the price and although VR is good for hand holding, this lens will be used with my Nikon D3s and since the D3s has excellent high iso performance, I didn't think not having a VR would be a handicap when hand holding, anyway you can always use a tripod.
One of the reasons for purchasing it was to use it for astro-photography and the initial results were very good with the with the lens set to 18mm
                              f/3.5 iso 1000. I didn't try it at 35mm though.
I did test it against light colored house siding for any distortions, barrel, vignetting ect and regarding barrel it was easily fixed in CS-5. The was a little vignetting in the cornors wide open but by f/8 it was ok and again fixable in CS-5, you can also set the vignetting amount in the D3s menus. Note this was a quick test just to get an idea of its performance.
One thing to note, this lens is very light, has a plastic barrel but the lens mount is metal. You must be very carefull using it any bumps, bangs ect will porbably break it.
I also liked the Nikon warrentry 5 years and my experences with having work done at NIkon's Melville facitity are very positive.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Very clear and sharp lens. There is slight distortion at 18 especially in the corners. Focus is reasonablely fast. Yes, the lens is light and mostly plastic, you get what you pay for. If you want a good walk around wide angle lens and don't want to pay over 1000 dollars, this is a excellent choice.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Using this on D800. Wanted something lighter than 14-24 that could use ND and polarizing filters for landscape work. Fits the bill perfectly. Outstanding color rendition, contrast, center and edge sharpness. Since I can go up to ISO 1600 on the D800 if needed, the lack of VR and 2.8 aperture isn't an issue. Also, avoids the heinous reflections from shooting the 14-24 anywhere near the sun. The 18 low end on the 18-35 isn't anywhere close to reach of the 14-24 at 14, but that is the main trade-off here. Image quality is awfully close to the 14-24 and probably equal in the center. It looks like the 14-24 is going to be a secondary lens I will use when I need the widest reach and when light is low and I'm hand holding and need the 2.8 aperture. Otherwise I'm going with this one due to size, weight, and ability to use filters.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Use this for cramped spaces or wide landscapes (or seascapes/skyscapes). Use it with a high resolution camera sensor when you simply don't want the weight of something more general purpose (great image quality). The light weight makes it easy to handle, but, other than landscapes, you will want to get close to your subjects for the best shots.

Pair it with a nice long zoom lens (like the 28-300) to cover everything you might want to take pictures of with only two lenses. Great price and light weight make this an excellent addition for travel setups.

Don't bother with this lens for DX cameras.

very sharp when stopped down to f 11 or greater on a Nikon D 800 if careful technique ( hyper focal focusing or live view focus used ) is employed. Given the alternatives represents good value for the money.

Just looked at the shots today and was very pleased.
