I was looking for a good quality "travel" camera, with a relatively extended zoom. I compared with several available models and eventually selected FujiFilm's latest FinePix 900EWR model (with a 20 x zoom) and, so far, I have been happy with this choice.

The camera has a nice profiled design, with rounded edges all-around, and offers a good grip and handle. The advertised weight is accurate (8.2 Oz/232 gr. with battery and memory card), and, altogether, it proves to be easily portable, including in a jacket or pants pocket.

There are multiple useful modes, plus PSAM controls for manual settings, which I have found easy to use after some learning experience (the camera comes with a small 12 pages printed "Basic Manual", plus with a CD loaded with a 146 pages full "Owner's Manual").

Start-up is very fast, as well as auto-focus.

Image quality is excellent, with bright colors and good reproduction of shades and contrasts.

On the minus side, the (Fujifilm NP 50A) battery drains really fast, and I would recommend having two (2) spare batteries when going out for an half day of relatively frequent shooting.

I made the mistake of thinking this would be a great dual purpose camera. My Video camera takes great still photos, and this camera takes great videos in certain circumstances. But if you zoom in and out it goes out of focus immediately, and takes 3 - 5 seconds to refocus. I could not make it focus on a small image in the foreground. Since I do nature photos, this is a killer. The image stabilization does not work well at all in video, but is great in still mode. Regretfully I had to send it back.

Comments about Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR Digital Camera (Indigo Blue):

As the title says, it's a good little camera that yields nice results.

Positives:

Much better battery life than my previous Fuji P&S (E900).

Better (quicker) autofocus with little if any hunting.

I prefer a camera which provides a RAW image file.

Gripes:

It doesn't have a viewfinder. I find that I have trouble seeing the LCD screen in brightly lit situations and therefore have trouble composing my shots.

It's a bit difficult to grab the SD card when trying to remove it.

The flash can be a little difficult to deploy and activate.

Comments about FinePix F900EXR Digital Camera (Indigo Blue):

I have a large digital SLR (Canon 40D) but was looking for a high quality small camera I could literally put in my pocket. I still wanted creative control but also a quick point and shoot. I wanted a large optical zoom which this camera has. Bonus is wireless transfer which I have enjoyed. Generally easy to use and I am very happy with it. Few quirks (can't force flash if camera in silent mode - huh?) but nothing to detract from camera.

Comments about FinePix F900EXR Digital Camera (Black):

I've been into photography for over 50 years and have used many, many cameras. Digital cameras just keep getting better and better all the time. The F900 is the first Fujifilm I've owned since my F31 died.I've been using the F900EXR for about three weeks now and just returned from a trip to Belgium and Holland where I used the camera extensively for travel snaps. I usually post process every image, though I find the F900EXR images only require a bit of contrast enhancement and maybe some cropping or addition of a vignette. -------------- 'ive been using Kim Letkeman's settings Shoot a FujiFilm EXR Camera ------ . I've only shot a few RAW files - they are huge - and processed them in Silkypix. Silkypix seems more responsive than in the past, which I welcome.I can't comment on the movie functions, as I'm not into video much. Here is a synopsis evaluation.PlusesVery fast AF. Runs rings around most P&S cameras I've used.Image quality is very good. Colors in Standard Mode are pleasing and accurate, perhaps a bit warm overall. Velvia/Vivid seems a bit too strong for my tastes. There are no controls for sharpness, contrast or saturation.Image Stabilization is very good. The lens is sharp edge to edge and in the corners - at least on my copy. The E-Fn menu is unique and customizable. A nice touch in light of the fact that there are no custom settings on the control dial.I like the Auto bracketing feature, though I've found that the metering (I like Center weighted) is very good. -1/3 EV works in most daylight situations. The sweep panorama function is great - one of the best I've ever used.MinusesThere are no custom settings on the control dial. At least one would be welcome.RAW files are huge - 20-25MB.The LCD can be hard to see in bright light, but that's true for most P&S cameras. Note that it is possible to increase screen brightness with a long push of the E-Fn button. The Movie button can be pressed accidentally if you're not careful.

The F900EXR is my 9th digital point & shoot, and it's light years ahead of the previous 8. I like everything about it - size, style, funtion and results. I was also looking at the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7, a very nice camera, but in the end, it was the Fuji's 20x optical zoom that sold me.

Comments about FinePix F900EXR Digital Camera (Black):

I'm an avid olympus person and have one of the E500 digital SLRs but want something a little smaller and portable for ad hoc shooting when I wasn't carrying all my camera gear. Olympus didn't have anything of this size that did raw shooting and with the 20x optical zoom so I searched elsewhere. Initial thoughts...nice size, good feel, nice functionality. Everything shot so far has been clear, crisp, and matched coloration well. Love the startup time. Autofocus is quick. Only issue so far is Lightroom and Paintshop pro x5 do not have updates for the Raw format the camera uses. You have to convert with the included software first which I don't care for. Only giving it 4 stars as I haven't had enough time to put it through all the paces and I'm typically using my digital SLR.

I waited for this camera's release because I needed the lightest camera I could find that still offered advanced features. The 900EXR has exceeded all expectations. An amazingly advanced easy to use intuitive menu camera at under 8 ounces. As a mountain hunter shaving every ounce is crucial. With this camera I achieved that goal without compromising photographic options.
