This is a great camera. It takes top notch pictures, its small size allows it to fit almost anywhere (even some pockets), and it has the best price to performance ratio I've seen. The lens here is really impressive given the cost (better than any SLR kit lens I've used). Also the camera is superb at keeping the noise low into the high ISO range (It's completely acceptable up trough iso 3200 for an 8x10 print although obviously the lower the better). If you don't know what I mean by that essentially this camera takes better pictures in low light than most cameras, even without using a flash.

I would say comfortably that if you currently use a DSLR but are the kind of person that only has 1 or 2 lenses and doesn't spend over $1000 per lens then you should switch to either this or the nex-5t now. There really isn't an advantage to the DSLR anymore unless you just really enjoy viewfinders. Even if you're the kind of person who really makes use of the fine glass Canon and Nikon make available, you might still want to consider switching to a nex and looking into the high-end Carl Zeiss e-mount glass.

Similarly if you currently use a point and shoot (or your phone) and want to step up your photo game then this is an excellent choice.

There are a couple downsides. None are deal breakers and most are fixed if you're willing to upgrade to the nex-5t. The first is it makes a fake shutter noise. The noise isn't even that bad or dumb sounding, but just on principal it's a stupid thing for a camera to do, and there's no way to turn it off. The lack of a touch screen is annoying, mostly because I want the ability to touch to focus (controlling the menu is fine without one). Also Sony please include a wrist strap instead of (or in addition to) the shoulder strap. This camera's so small and light all you need is a wrist strap and the big shoulder strap just gets in the way! (I swiped the wrist cord from a point and shoot I had). Last thing is I wish the screen would swivel more directions, particularly pivoting down would be great for taking pictures from above your head.

One thing that isn't a problem is the screen resolution. I read some expert reviews that cited this as a problem and I think it's only something they notice because they compare cameras all day.

I've mentioned the nex-5t a bunch. I'm very happy I bought the 3n given the price difference, but I have handled the 5 and the wifi is noticeably faster and the touch screen is nice. Also I don't shoot video but I hear the faster focusing is especially nice for video shooting. Plus the 5t has some better video format. Anyways if those things are worth the extra money to you go for it but otherwise the 3n should suit you great. The wifi features of the 5t (or any camera that has similar ones) are a gimmick, annoying to use, and drain your battery. If you want to be able to upload photos without a laptop I recommend a microSD with SD converter for your memory card and then pop the microSD into a tablet or phone (a bunch of android, blackberry, and windows phones/tables accept them) and upload from there.

I hope that helps!

Own this camera for a Year, overall OK camera, I also own Nikon D800 sometimes I am too lazy to take My Nikon to vacation (and always regret it after all) Anyway Sony good performer but this kit lens is very bad, yeah it looks like a good idea one lens from wide to zoom but in practice the lens vignetting horribly at wide angle, especially if you planning to shoot raw at beach or in very bright condition plus good luck to catch that preciouse moments with running kids, lens way to slow to start up. Sony Pancake 16 mm f2.8 lens is much better it fast almost no vignetting. So far nothing can beat or even approach in quality and every other areas of photography to my Nikon D800 with 24-70 mm f 2.8 So better carry some weight and get outstanding results.

Comments about Alpha NEX-3N Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

I bought this camera to upgrade from a point and shoot. It is coat jacket pocketable. The larger sensor allows superior low light photos and picture quality is a step up from a point and shoot. The kit lens is good. I bought a set of filters-uv haze, polarizer and nd filter. The polarizer filter adds a dramatic effect to flower and landscape photos. Get the filter kit-it costs [$]. You may want to add a spare battery and an extra non usb battery charger as this will free the camera from its usb cord. Only cons with this camera is that it sometimes freezes as it writes to memory. Other con is that macro performance is not as good as a point and shoot in that you cannot get as close to subjects like flowers and butterflies. I am not sure but I believe that a foot or a foot and a half is as close as you can get. To do macro photography you may need a set of close up diopter lenses or a macro lens if Sony sells one. For all other types of photography this camera is great.

Comments about Alpha NEX-3N Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

This was a present for my teenage daughter. She has used our point and click for a long time but wanted more. I looked at DSLR's and they were too high priced and advanced for a beginner. This one offered a good middle ground and provides the ability to go to the next level and start changing settings.

She also loves the size of the camera. It is easy to carry and is easy for her to grip.

The screen interface is very intuitive on the surface. One of the challenges we have found is once you find a setting sometimes it is hard to remember where that setting was and to go back to it. This implies that the detailed settings are not as intuitive.

Very good camera for difficult light conditions in auto mode. Love its compact size (in my opinion just the right size) Though in time I am sure it would get smaller, and it may not feel like the right size. Seems to be solidly built. Great value for the investment.

VIDEO - Specific use with FD Lenses

Comments about Alpha NEX-3N Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

I bought this as a secondary camera, specifically to use it with old FD lenses. Though it's a little more difficult to navigate the menu then my main camera (T3i), it's not as tricky as I had anticipated.
In my case, it was a good purchase, since I could use my FD lenses properly, but a word of warning: when handheld the quickest movement might screw your image.
I'm not going to get into the merits of this camera for photography.
Aside from the fact that one can finally use FD lenses as they were meant to be used (although there's still the same crop factor as the DSLRs, because of the APS-C sensor), another great thing about this lens is that it's very small and light, so much that you can hold it by the lens. It's also cheap enough for a camera like this.
A great addition to my kit that will allow me to diversify my shots.
One last thing for those who are looking for this camera for video: though it was easy importing the scenes (through FCP Log and Transfer), the AVCHD compression takes up a lot of space.

I use this camera for capturing moments at fashion shows, on the street, and in a set environment. Whether subjects are moving or staged, this camera provides great images. It is small enough to tote around everywhere, but I appreciate having the lens to work with. The only thing I would like to see improved in the auto setting. Ah, the one thing I don't like about the build of the camera is that there is no pinhole to look through! You can only see images through the screen.

Im an Emmy Nominated Videographer. Shooting on the JVC ProHD700. I realized I needed some kind of DSLR for work that didn't require the kind of massive camera that I shoot with. But I knew it pretty much was going to be a 2nd camera. So I didn't want to spend the bucks, that how I came up with the decision to buy the NEX 3N. It will give 1080p video, a nice shallow depth of field, great looking video and I can carry it in my pocket or get additional lenses for it. I LOVE it. Beautiful image for a crazy low price.

This is my first mirrorless Camera, I am on a tight budget but was looking for something more than a point and shoot but I wasn't ready to make the leap into a DSLR.

I have been using this Camera for two weeks now and I am very happy with it, I am using it mostly for video. The built in microphones was surprisingly good, I shoot racecars and there was no distortion or clipping in the audio.

Overall, it's a great product at a even better price.

I recently purchased this camera as a step up from taking pictures with an iPhone. It certainly is an improvement. It functions much like a point and shoot in terms of ease of use, but with much better results. I haven't delved into the manual settings yet, but it does have a few options. The limitations it has is the ability to connect accessories like an external mic, etc, but that hasn't come up in the way I use the camera. I would definitely look into one of the higher level NEX cameras if you can afford it, but this one is a great introduction to interchangeable lens cameras and, like I said, takes really good photos.

The rx100 was my original choice but it was twice the price of the 3n. The 3n has a larger sensor and interchangeable lenses to boot.Of course it's larger but still easy carry in a jacket pocket (and the 20mm lens in the other pocket!)

Comments about Alpha NEX-3N Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (Black):

Seriously, for this price, you cannot beat the image quality. It doesn't hurt that tons of adapters exist for the NEX mount to slap on legacy glass either. Coupled with focus peaking (which btw Sony does very very well), you have a nifty little package to take advantage of your old arsenal of lenses. My only complaint is that it does not have a hot shoe... I don't think it would have taken too much to put one on there... the on board flash is a little under powered and wont fill an average sized room when bounced unless you go up to at least ISO1600. Still, the images are pretty clean at that ISO so it's not too bad.
