I have a zoom H4 already but mounting of the zoom recorder on 5D MKIII is not so good. Using Tascam DR-60D you can mount this right at bottom of your camera or with a camera plate. Moreover, it is 4 channel recording and adjustment of audio level on board/not like Zoom H6. It also has some remarkable function as follow:Pros1. record 4 channels into 2 seperate files2. 40Hz, 80Hz or 120Hz low cut (better perfermance in compare to zoom H4)3. audio delay setting, if needed.4. monitor seperate channel5. audio gain on output to camera or line output6. use USB chager7. slate function for sync.8. can use for multicam outputCons1. no microphone or speaker built in2. 3-4 input not use XLR3. size as big as camera4. comsume battery faster in compare with Zoom H4Finally, it is a good looking professional device and by mounting it with your DSLR it made it look more professional. I have 14 years of experience in audio production. I got the DR-60D to compliment one of my DSLR cams for better audio capture. I have long been a TASCAM fan and figured that this model was going to be a great little gadget for the price.

As soon as I got this product, I put it through a pretty extensive test. First, I used a pair of Neumann TLM 103 mics and recorded some speech, some music played on a classical guitar, and some silence of course. Right away I discovered two huge problems:

1. About every second or so, there were very quiet but notable artifacts inserted into the recordings. The sound resembled creaking of a leather chair. It was very consistent and always the same. Through the headphones, these artifacts would only be audible live once the recording has started, and then of course on the captured audio as well. I find this absolutely unacceptable for any kind of professional or even semi-professional work. Of course, it could be just my copy of the product, but that's TASCAM's problem, not their customers'.

2. I compared the recorded material captured by the DR-60D to an earlier recording I had made with exactly the same mic setup, but using M-Audio's Profire 2626 audio interface. The difference was stunning. Tascam's recording lacked quite substantially in the lower range (and no the low-cut was not on), and the overall quality was very noticeably worse. This made me conclude that the DR-60D's preamps are significantly sub-par even to some of Tascam's very own other products in the same price range. For example, I used to use Tascam's US-122 USB interface to capture field audio using a laptop. I don't know about the current improved US-122MKII version, but the original US-122 had preamps that are far superior to those of the DR-60D, and for less than half the price. I'm a long time fan of TASCAM (or was until now), and frankly I'm puzzled by the low performance of the DR-60D's preamps. It almost makes me think they were engineered by interns as a side project - the sound quality is on such an amateur level that you'd think this was bought in a toy section at Target.

But wait, after this initial test I proceeded to make some recordings using a lavaliere mic, just because I knew I'd be using it a lot for capturing speech while filming interviews with DSLRs. I used an Audio-Technica AT831 mic for this test. Well… I don't know what TASCAM's problem is, but the difference in quality was now four times worse compared to my previous test. Don't get me wrong, AT831 is not the fanciest lavaliere out there, but I've gotten some pretty decent audio with this mic using other pieces of equipment. Coupled with the DR-60D though, the resulting audio recording is unusable. The most noticeable defect is that even with the recording volume knob turned all the way up, and the gain level set to high in the menus (and the VU meters going crazy - more about that later), the levels on the recorded material are still far too low. Plus, the sound quality was now so bad that even my iPhone's mic sounds better in comparison!

Now, concerning the noise floor: when I was monitoring my test recording through the headphones, the noise was pretty thick. When the gain level is selected to medium or high in the menu, it is not only visible on the VU meter, but it's so high that it's scary. But, to my big surprise, when I listened to and analyzed the recording on the computer, the noise was substantially less pronounced, although there was still some high-pitched hiss that was there. The hiss level was pretty low though (more present in Ch-1 than Ch-2 though), and if it weren't for the unit's other problems, I would have probably kept it.

I did not test channels 3/4.

Other less substantial, but still very annoying problems:

1. The VU meter is ridiculously inaccurate. As mentioned earlier, it seems to be showing the noise that you hear live in the headphones, but that's not there in the recording. It is also deceiving and takes some getting used to in order to set the recording volume to the optimum level.

2. Every time the phantom power is switched on for each channel, there is an "Are you sure?" message that appears on the screen that has to be dismissed, thus requiring extra action from the engineer and unnecessarily consuming his attention.

I assume the above two annoyances could be resolved with a firmware update down the road, and so they aren't as critical.

Concerning other users' comments I've seen regarding the unit's lack of built-in microphones. I actually consider that to be a plus, because in my experience built-in mics in all these portable recorders are always a disappointment. Keep in mind that the mics are always going to be cheap in a unit of this price range, and they will always pick up the noise produced by the unit's circuitry and operation. This is not the same about the preamps though, because as I mentioned earlier, I've owned products for less $$ than this one and that produced far better results.

Needless to say, I'm returning the TASCAM DR-60D back to B&H first thing Monday morning. It's too bad, because like I said, until now I was a TASCAM fan. I actually do like the design and the feel of this product, but the bottom line is - the preamps are trash. Coupled with the artifacts that show up on the recording, this product is absolutely unusable for any kind of serious work. If you're an existing user and like this product - that's great, but I would strongly urge you to make some comparison recordings using other gear. You might just be as stunned as I was!

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

My DR-40 was producing noise and squeals with my Sennheiser MKH 416. This shotgun mic is incredible, all I want is a way to link it to a DSLR. Since the DR-40 was no longer reliable, I tried the DR -60. Using rechargeable batteries, I was only able to get 2 hours of battery life out it. At best. I record plays for a theater group and that can go 3 hours. I don't have time to change the batteries after interview, before the first act, and at intermission. Nor do I have 12 rechargeable batteries to waste on just audio. Also, it does produce a significant hiss going direct to the camera, so I will have to sync the recorder's audio (which does sound cleaner). I'm trying the Azden and if that doesn't work I'll just get another DR-40. Personally, I think the DR-60 is just too big. It's nice having a screen to check the levels and the dials are a big improvement order buttons on the DR-40, but they are not analogue, and are not smooth when you turn things up or down.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

While not the most prestine pre-amps in the world, they markedly improve audio compared with direct in to a DSLR. I most appreciate that it is very straightforward to use -- the buttons are logical and making setting changes is straightforward. Just wish the battery life was longer.

Although I'm not all that happy with battery life, considering all the plus it has to offer, it shadows the battery life issue. Besides, I use external battery chargers for my rigs, so it really doesn't make a difference. For the price, the preamps gives JuiceLink a run for their expensive money. I rather buy two of these than one JuiceLink, plus the ability to record to an SD card as a backup.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

We had to return this unit to the manufacturer a week or so after we received. All of the buttons and readings were working fine but it was not recording. Lucky TEAC has a location close by in California so we took it directly to them. They informed us that it appears that the motherboard in the unit was not receiving the signals even though the display screen was showing that all was functioning correctly. They repaired the unit within a couple of days. When using the unit after the repair, during the fourth day of use it was cutting out from recording ever six to eight seconds. It would appear that this type of unit is a pure lemon or the manufacturing quality control is very poor. I have once again contacted my location branch of TEAC to see how they would like to resolve the issue

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

So everything works and it sounds great with my Rode NTG-2. The Tascam DR-40 I had before didn't have strong enough preamps to boost the NTG-2 so the sound was awful. Thankfully the 60D can get a great clean sound from the NTG-2. The NTG-2 is the only mic I've tried on it so far but I'm very pleased with just that. I have not, nor am going to use this as a preamp for the DSLR. I got this over a Juicedlink because I wanted my audio independent from video because I use a Rode Stereo VideoMic on my camera for B-Audio. The only Con I can think of is that this thing is a battery eater, other than that no complaints. Extremely easy to use coming from the DR-40, a lot of the same features and functions, it was an easy adjustment.

This is a good product, good sound quality. The down side is the use of AA batteries, I think such a product should use rechargeable Li-ion batteries, and this must come as a package with the product. Its always easy to work with those kinds of batteries.

I use this unit with Lumix cameras for interviews and documentaries.I'm pleased with the audio quality the DR-60 provides, and the dual recording capability is a huge plus. On the other hand, the build quality is a tad on the flimsy side: I've had to glue the 1/4 20 thumb wheel to the threaded post because it comes loose, and one of the XLR jacks wouldn't release the cable connector. Battery life isn't great, but I've yet to run out of power while on a shoot.Overall the DR-60 is a great value for the price and it works well. Just be aware that it's not as durable as other units on the market.

I use this for narratives, which includes dialogue, foley, etc. and I also record thru a live mixer for events. This recorder is the best recorder under $. Your next best bet is a Zoom H1 matched with the iRig Pre (about $- total)..but even that is awkwardly close to the price of this.Pros: >The most bang for your buck you will ever experience with an audio recorder under $. >Multiple inputs and outputs giving multiple possibilities>Allows external power sources for studio users or long shoots.>Durable and has a button for just about everythingCons: >This eats up AA batteries, so resort to a usb power bank or rechareable AA's.>Monitoring can be tough with the sync features engaged..as they are extremely loud, and I do not see a purpose unless it is connected to a camera.>The menu for adjusting gain, low cut, and other options are split in different sub-menus. Obviously not a huge problem but might slow you down.>Bulky. I wear mine on a sling strap, under the camera (as they advertise), or on it's own tripod.> Some XLR inputs have issues. A few owners (myself included) end up having a cable jammed in one of the inputs. This is probably the only real problem as the rest are more opinion based.

This thing mounts on your tripod, under your DSLR. It's amazing that I haven't seen one before this but this little rig is a great way to record audio when shooting with a DSLR. It also has stereo mini I/O!

Excelente calidad, fácil de usar y montar en el tripod, monopod o shoulder. Es un gran grabador de audio, mejora muchísimo el sonido captado desde los micrófonos. Ampliamente recomendado.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

We upgraded from a H4n to the Tascam DR-60D to use while filming a documentary.
This unit is amazing. The audio clarity was far superior to what we expected, and it was easy to use. We attached both wireless lav's and a shotgun mic and were extremely pleased with the results. Had gotten a recommendation from a fellow indie filmmaker to go with the Tascam and he was right. We only wish it came with the power adapter. We used this unit with a camcorder and a DSLR.

Just set up and tested last night. Sounds great! Recording in stereo with a couple of Sennheisers hooked into channels 1 & 2 via a couple of high quality XLR cables. Nice!

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

This is an impressive piece of portable sound equipment. AA batteries allow me to hook up and finely control (3) inputs (mics or other audio) on the fly.

I bought this "recorder" for it's ability to control sound input with my Nikon D5200 SLR while directly recording video to the camera. The ability to "stack" the DR-60D between the tripod and camera is very convenient.

I am not a professional. The learning curve has been reasonable. I know there is a LOT more that this device can do... for now I appreciate the mobility and ability the DR-60D has for controlling sound level, clarity, background noise reduction and live headphone monitoring.
