I have a zoom H4 already but mounting of the zoom recorder on 5D MKIII is not so good. Using Tascam DR-60D you can mount this right at bottom of your camera or with a camera plate. Moreover, it is 4 channel recording and adjustment of audio level on board/not like Zoom H6. It also has some remarkable function as follow:Pros1. record 4 channels into 2 seperate files2. 40Hz, 80Hz or 120Hz low cut (better perfermance in compare to zoom H4)3. audio delay setting, if needed.4. monitor seperate channel5. audio gain on output to camera or line output6. use USB chager7. slate function for sync.8. can use for multicam outputCons1. no microphone or speaker built in2. 3-4 input not use XLR3. size as big as camera4. comsume battery faster in compare with Zoom H4Finally, it is a good looking professional device and by mounting it with your DSLR it made it look more professional. I have 14 years of experience in audio production. I got the DR-60D to compliment one of my DSLR cams for better audio capture. I have long been a TASCAM fan and figured that this model was going to be a great little gadget for the price.

As soon as I got this product, I put it through a pretty extensive test. First, I used a pair of Neumann TLM 103 mics and recorded some speech, some music played on a classical guitar, and some silence of course. Right away I discovered two huge problems:

1. About every second or so, there were very quiet but notable artifacts inserted into the recordings. The sound resembled creaking of a leather chair. It was very consistent and always the same. Through the headphones, these artifacts would only be audible live once the recording has started, and then of course on the captured audio as well. I find this absolutely unacceptable for any kind of professional or even semi-professional work. Of course, it could be just my copy of the product, but that's TASCAM's problem, not their customers'.

2. I compared the recorded material captured by the DR-60D to an earlier recording I had made with exactly the same mic setup, but using M-Audio's Profire 2626 audio interface. The difference was stunning. Tascam's recording lacked quite substantially in the lower range (and no the low-cut was not on), and the overall quality was very noticeably worse. This made me conclude that the DR-60D's preamps are significantly sub-par even to some of Tascam's very own other products in the same price range. For example, I used to use Tascam's US-122 USB interface to capture field audio using a laptop. I don't know about the current improved US-122MKII version, but the original US-122 had preamps that are far superior to those of the DR-60D, and for less than half the price. I'm a long time fan of TASCAM (or was until now), and frankly I'm puzzled by the low performance of the DR-60D's preamps. It almost makes me think they were engineered by interns as a side project - the sound quality is on such an amateur level that you'd think this was bought in a toy section at Target.

But wait, after this initial test I proceeded to make some recordings using a lavaliere mic, just because I knew I'd be using it a lot for capturing speech while filming interviews with DSLRs. I used an Audio-Technica AT831 mic for this test. Well… I don't know what TASCAM's problem is, but the difference in quality was now four times worse compared to my previous test. Don't get me wrong, AT831 is not the fanciest lavaliere out there, but I've gotten some pretty decent audio with this mic using other pieces of equipment. Coupled with the DR-60D though, the resulting audio recording is unusable. The most noticeable defect is that even with the recording volume knob turned all the way up, and the gain level set to high in the menus (and the VU meters going crazy - more about that later), the levels on the recorded material are still far too low. Plus, the sound quality was now so bad that even my iPhone's mic sounds better in comparison!

Now, concerning the noise floor: when I was monitoring my test recording through the headphones, the noise was pretty thick. When the gain level is selected to medium or high in the menu, it is not only visible on the VU meter, but it's so high that it's scary. But, to my big surprise, when I listened to and analyzed the recording on the computer, the noise was substantially less pronounced, although there was still some high-pitched hiss that was there. The hiss level was pretty low though (more present in Ch-1 than Ch-2 though), and if it weren't for the unit's other problems, I would have probably kept it.

I did not test channels 3/4.

Other less substantial, but still very annoying problems:

1. The VU meter is ridiculously inaccurate. As mentioned earlier, it seems to be showing the noise that you hear live in the headphones, but that's not there in the recording. It is also deceiving and takes some getting used to in order to set the recording volume to the optimum level.

2. Every time the phantom power is switched on for each channel, there is an "Are you sure?" message that appears on the screen that has to be dismissed, thus requiring extra action from the engineer and unnecessarily consuming his attention.

I assume the above two annoyances could be resolved with a firmware update down the road, and so they aren't as critical.

Concerning other users' comments I've seen regarding the unit's lack of built-in microphones. I actually consider that to be a plus, because in my experience built-in mics in all these portable recorders are always a disappointment. Keep in mind that the mics are always going to be cheap in a unit of this price range, and they will always pick up the noise produced by the unit's circuitry and operation. This is not the same about the preamps though, because as I mentioned earlier, I've owned products for less $$ than this one and that produced far better results.

Needless to say, I'm returning the TASCAM DR-60D back to B&H first thing Monday morning. It's too bad, because like I said, until now I was a TASCAM fan. I actually do like the design and the feel of this product, but the bottom line is - the preamps are trash. Coupled with the artifacts that show up on the recording, this product is absolutely unusable for any kind of serious work. If you're an existing user and like this product - that's great, but I would strongly urge you to make some comparison recordings using other gear. You might just be as stunned as I was!

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

This is the perfect solution and balance between quality and price.

You'll find there is very little needed done in post production. The Signal to Noise Ration is fantastic and almost as good as professional level studio equipment.

I like the knobs and controls on the front facing towards me when recording as opposed to the top like other field recorders are when mounted on tripods or rigs. Additionally, it really conserves space by allowing one to mount other device on top or place this device between two other devices.

This is not a complaint but more my personal opinion. I would have liked a version that has four XLR inputs instead of only two plus the mini stereo jack. It's actually great that it is designed this way because it caters to both XLR mics and 3.5" mics.

I use this with the Rode NTG-2, like many others have suggested. The results are better than I expected, just as the reviews say. The DR60D and the NTG-2 gives you about 4-5 hours of running time with the mic running off it's own battery. With the mic running off the phantom power of the DR60D, you'll get about 3-4 at most with good batteries.

Conclusively, this is a perfect choice for great quality recordings and it is, by far, the best field recorder I have used. Once you get it, you won't be disappointed.

I wanted a devise so I can send final audio right into my DSLR. I did not want to post-sync. And this did the job! Sounds great! Its a little heavy and bulky, so if you shoot a lot of hand held, you may get tired. But I shoot off a tripod for most of my stuff, and it works great. Also, you must buy the battery extension pack thing. I ran it with the internal batteries, and I think it only lasted like 3 hours.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

Very powerful preamp and versatile recorder. Allows you to run nearly every type of mic you could want into it while providing phantom (24/48v) to the mics you need it to. Lets you select a few different audio formats as well as bitrate, but will definitely eat up as many batteries as you throw at it. Avoid using the phantom power when you have the option to run a battery on the mic if you're off the AC adapter. Also, get the AC adapter to use when you can.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

That is portable you could also look up a microphone on the wireless transmitter and be almost anywhere and pick up great audio. Like the durability of the product in the fact that is very easy to use and hook up. The product is also good for any situation for example it's good for outdoors if you're interviewing people or if you doing a quick infomercial or type of commercial and good for inside if you want to use a DSL at church or an inside setting. I recommend this to anybody who has a rebel T3 because that cable does not have an audio input output at all and it sucks so estimate was like that this so I suggest you get it so anybody that she is looking to improve the sound quality and pick up great sound like if you want to run it through a mixing console

I 'm taking a college class that is studing audio for film & tv. After borrowing the schools zoom H4s and H 6s I began looking for a better recorder. I liked the tascams ease of use when using it in a bag. All the controls were easy to access and the display is good to see outdoors. Quiet pre's, Mid/Side decoder and dual recording are a big plus for me. Two concerns before buying were reports of XLR connectors not releasing and the unit being battery hungry. Well the XLRs are good and don't jam and I'm using a 30,000 Mw/h portable battery. All is good and this recorder is highly recommended. My only wish would be the addition of time code.

As a fresh out of school individual who has a small small small budget, the DR-60D is awesome! I wish I had it in my time at college. I studied Broadcast and Digital media, so the majority of my classes involved shooting broadcast and recording bits for radio shows. As I said before my budget was very small and I used a Nikon d5000(my personal DSLR) when I was unable to check out school equipment. The d5000 has worse than no audio built in (like most if not all DSLRs) but it also does not have the ability to hook any audio into it, so syncing the DR-60D with the d5000 is tedious but the outcome is the best you can get with low end gear. After Ordering the DR-60D, I realized I needed to get a mic with it to actually use it, so I bought a cheap shotgun of @ for $ . It is a piece of junk but with the built in Phantom Power, I can get a clear and loud recording. aside from the performance, some of the smaller things that I absolutely love is the strap bars on the face of the device. It makes it very convenient when using. I also love the ability to use an outside battery besides the 4 AA batteries. right now I have been using a "Power Bank" which is used for a portable phone charger, but with the USB output, you can plug that sucker into the Tascam and you are good to go. So far I have not come across any negative things about the Tascam. It is exactly what I was looking for at this time of my career. All in all, this Tacam is a great device for any beginners looking for a cheap, easy to use recorder.

I purchased the DR-60D to enhance my capabilities for recording professional level audio when shooting with my Nikon D600. It is very well suited to the task and it is an excellent piece of gear, especially for the price. This unit combines great versatility with ease of use. It's range of recording options (up to 4 channels, multiple mono/stereo options, simultaneous internal/external record, up to 24bit to the internal media cards, etc.) make it a usable option for almost any situation that I might encounter. The compact size and weight are a big plus for DSLR shooting. I have mine rigged to a hand held cage, which I use for almost all situations. It works very well. I can only say positive things, as I have yet to encounter a negative.

This PCM Recorder is a great add-on to my DSLR shooting package. I love the fact you can mount it below the camera, between the tripod and the DSLR. Makes it easy to connect to camera and external mics. And monitor with a headset. Great purchase - I will be using it extensively.

I'm an independent film maker and this works great as part of a mobile boom set up. Just hook up a decent shot gun mic, boom pole, and suspension system and you are set. Some folks have complained about hissing or other some such non-sense but in reality that is because the recorder is a bit too sensitive and is picking up the noise floor. All you have to do is adjust the gain so that the noise floor goes under what is registerable and pow you have super clean audio. Even if you still have some a few clicks in Adobe and everything is gone. Yes the preamps aren't the best but I think most people can figure out how to accurately set the gain for each situation. The added feature of a safety track makes recording worry free for those productions of the horror nature that are plagued by scream distortion. (you go from heavy scared breathing to screaming in the same take). The menus are awesome and easy to figure out if you have worked with any recorder previously. I caught mine on sale for $ but for $ I still consider it a great investment.

I have a few hand held field recorders and of them all this is the most robust compact recorder that I can use both while in the field or studio. I use it with a wireless receiver with 4 remote mics shooting narrative scenes and it does a great job handling the signal. I also like the slate feature that helps me sync the in camera scratch audio with those on the SDCard. Great value for the promotional price I paid for.

Makes a compact unit with only the mic cables to contend with. The audio recorded to the camera works well for most play back devices. When recording to the camera no need to worry about sinking. I do prefer to keep the back light on which cuts into the battery life. The slate tone ramps up and find that when sinking the audio files you can be off a few frames, best to use a slate with the sharp clap to be sure it sinks to the frame. The tripod thread starts too deep, one tripod will not attach the other only has a couple turns to attach. For the price point a good buy.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

I desperately needed another audio recording device but most were just too expensive. Sometimes just needed an audio recording (V/O, etc.) without entire filming system. The DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder by Tascam fits my needs perfectly. I have only had the unit a couple weeks so not much opportunity to check out all its functions -- it was a little confusing at first to understand what the modes were accomplishing.
The DR-60D size and weight make it very flexible and versatile. It has been mounted on a tripod with a Sony HDR-CX240 video camera on top, on a table, on the floor, in my lap -- anywhere to meet project requirements. recordings are clear, rich, and full. Plenty of control with pre-amps and I especially like the "Quick" function. When recording finished, just pop out the SD chip and plug into my laptop and I'm working with the audio and video.
