Well, I have had the new Nikon 80-400mm for a week now and I am impressed, to say the least! Here's some of my experiences so far. The image posted here is of nestling Stellar's Jays, handheld, sitting in a chair, TC1.4, ISO 3200, 1/60sec at f8, VR set to "NORMAL" with the D800. The nest was under the eves of a porch and was dark but did have some reflected light coming in from the windows in front of it, you can see a shadow above and behind the birds. I did nothing to this image, just converted the raw in ACR with no raw presharpening and sized to fit BPN constraints. I don't know how the image stacks up to the products of higher end lenses but I do know that I would not have been able to produce it with ANY OF MY PAST EQUIPMENT!

I have used it exclusively with the TC1.4.

I can tell that it is a little heavier that the old version but not significantly for walking around with handheld (a shoulder strap is recommended though).

Although I haven't really got to use it for much BIF, I can say the the AF with the tc is way faster than the old version (which wouldn't accept a tc) and at least as fast as the Nikon 300f4+tc1.4.

I shot some really low light (in the Sierra deep forest shadows) and had no problem AF'ing. It is really nice to be able to MF while in AF mode to rough in the focus then let the AF take over.

THE VR ROCKS! Compared to the old version, this VR is amazing to me, even with the 1.4 attached. My old version's VR didn't even exist compared to this new version!!! I was able to get sharp images down to 1/60sec handheld, providing the subject didn't flinch!

I shot some small butterflies at close focus and the combo worked well but the lens does "breath" at the close focus, I have read that it losses focal length at CF and it does, but it was still nice to be able to focus on subjects under 5 feet away!

My D800 calculates the focal length with the tc1.4 as 550mm? Should be 560mm, according to my math skills? Oh Well!

I can't wait to get out and do some BIF with and without the tc.

I LOVE THIS LENS (so far)!

I have been waiting for this lens for a long time. I own the previous version, a practical lens but with many limitations. The lens is ergonomically good, although I expected the zoom to be internal rather than external like its predecessor. The focusing is very fast although a bit clunky ̶ it is noisy and it tends to search, although not as bad as its predecessor. My biggest disappointment was the resolution. For a lens of this price, I expected a crisp, sharp picture. I compared some of the shots with others taken with my 300mm F4.0 with the 1.4 teleconverter (a 420mm equivalent) and the latter left the 80-400 in the dust. Maybe I got a bad sample, but I sent the lens back.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

It performs as expected in my preliminary testing and shooting. It doesn't have the feel of my (very heavy) pro lenses but for getting through airports to and from Africa as carry on it'll do the trick. I'll update this review when I get back from Botswana next month if I find out anything that hasn't already been covered in other reviews.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I have used this lens for all sports action coverage: Football, baseball, basketball. golf and volley ball. I disagree with the negative tracking comments. I have had nothing but success in tracking fast action sports. I also love the solid feel and the con comment: of heavy weight. It feels solid and any experienced photographer can handle the weight. Now that I think about it, this is the best I've felt about any lens I've used. I've never had a submitted photograph rejected for news publication. Try it, you'll love it! Thanks, Richard.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Great lens for the zoo. Very nice bokeh. VR is very effective, but keep in mind only short exposure times will stop motion. Easy to get sharp backgrounds and fuzzy critters as the VR tends to make you think you can get away with longer exposure times. Using it on a D3 with a monopod. The combination is a bit heavy by the end of the day. Autofocus has worked well for me.

Heavy lens but worth lugging around. The VR is surprisingly good and AF spot on. I pair this with my D610 with good results.. Still getting used to working with it but very happy so far.

On my Nikon D800, I can handhold and get razor sharp bird pictures(when the little guys sit still long enough).I am an average size 66 yr. old woman and thought the weight might be a bit much to lug around but it is very well balanced. I use a Cotton Carrier harness on hikes. I am using this lens every day and am very happy with it.

I shoot a Nikon D800E, normally with a 28-300mm lens. It was so-so on air shows. I rented the 80-400 AF-S and then bought it from B&H. This is the perfect lens for air shows and birds in flight.

It handholds nicely, and the focus is spot on and fast. My Canon friends are jealous.

          Highly recommended.

I'm thrilled with this lens. I can hand hold with the vibration reduction or use it on a monopod to pan moving objects like birds. I just got the lens and have been impressed with the results right out of the box. On my Nikon D800 with the full-sized sensor, I can crop out over half of the image and have super resolution and sharpness.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Since purchasing this lens a couple of months back, I haven't really had the opportunity to put it through its paces until last week. I was photographing graduations at the Air Force Academy that were, incidently, held inside. Amazed is the only word I can use to describe the images that I was able to capture with this lens (coupled to my D700). Having the ability to utilize this lens to 400mm for my candid images made all the difference in the world. It is incredibly sharp and fast focusing. The VR is great, though I used a monopod most of the time. Let me tell you, I couldn't be happier. After the shoot, I had the opportunity to take it up into the mountains where I captured some really beautiful wildlife images. If you do decide to purchase this lens, buy the Kirk Lens Collar....the factory mount is junk. Other than that, what a great peice of equipment!!!!

This lens fits the bill for me.I need something lightweight in the field that gives a nice zoom range because when your not shooting birds you don't need or want 400mm.80mm is a perfect walk around focal length that I use often. I do have one complaint and that is the fact that this lens breathes dust in a lot more easily than my other zooms. This Flaw is why I knocked it from having a perfect rating. When you receive this lens be sure that you spend some time with it to get to know its idiosyncrasies as it has a few just like any tool. This lens in certain situations does suffer from some lens chatter while autofocusing which can be annoying. To me, when I hit the correct exposure, focus & composition this lens gives amazing contrast and sharp detail! Also the VR works extremely well.

I owned the first version of this lens, and while it was an adequate performer it left something to be desired. I sold it and bought the first version of the 70-200mm f2.8 VR. I used that lens for several years but after upgrading to FX format it just didn't have the reach I wanted. So, I sold that and bought the new 80-400mm VR and am very impressed. It is sharp and focuses very quickly. While it is heavy, I'll bear that burden happily. I highly recommend this lens and while pretty $$$$ it is worth it.

The lens covers prime real estate when in the field and I don't need to worry which body I grab since it covers my FX or DX sensors.

If I were to base the purchase of this lens on photos presented in some reviews, I would never have purchased it. Price is no different than other zooms with nano coating and a strong motor. What's great is the VR which is sadly lacking in the 24-70mm f/2.8.

After having used the Sigma 150-500mm for several years, I wanted to move up the ladder in the quality of my bird and wildlife photography. This lens is a fine piece of optic and blows the Sigma away.

The autofocus is extremely fast and consistent. Color and contrast are excellent as well as sharpness across the frame, with the sweet spot being at f/8 through f/11.

Despite the hefty cost, this is money well spent.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I read many reviews for a lens to take on a photo safari in Kenya. My trip isn't scheduled until this fall (2014) so this will allow me a chance to get more comfortable with this lens. I paired this lens with a Nikon D90. I have been practicing with the local bird population and discovered the lens focuses quite rapidly and provide excellent image quality. The VR mode does a nice job when taking hand held photos. I was surprised to see the results after it seemed my shaking would never allow a good photo. Thank you Nikon.
If there is one thing I think should be improved, it would be the tripod mount. It doesn't appear to provide enough of a solid support when mounted on a solid tripod.

Probably not Nikon's very best but for versatility it can't be beat. This lens on a safari or other such expedition means you can travel with just one. I've taken some very sharp images with it, all hand held. It has a valued place in my bag. Focus is fast and accurate.
