I'm very happy with this new iteration of the Nikkor 80-400mm. About time, Nikon, but well done! I had the original (non AF-S) 6 years ago--used it once and sold it. The addition of AF-S has turned this into a great carry lens for me for birding. Not too big or heavy and with good reach. My Nikkor 500mm f/4 is a bit heavy to carry around for hours and really needs a solid tripod. And my Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 with 1.7x teleconverter is not as sharp as this lens, IMO, not surprisingly. I still won't sell the 70-200mm though as it's excellent for near-distant subjects.Image quality with this lens is excellent on my D7100 (DX), edge-to-edge and even at 400mm and f/5.6. I did fine-tune the lens focus with my body, as I do with all my telephotos--this can make a noticeable improvement.Focus is fast and accurate enough and the zoom is smooth. VR seems to work as advertised. Some CA is present but easy enough to minimize in Photoshop. I did replace the tripod collar with a Kirk Lens Collar, which supports the lens in 2 places and feels much more solid. If I had to find something to complain about it would be the price--Canon's new 100-400 is ~$ less at this time. Yes this lens isn't cheap, but it's a quality Nikkor and fits my needs very well. I've taken some bird photos that I love with it so far, and look forward to many more.

When I first purchased this lens, I was thrilled. The autofocus was fast, and the focus was nice and sharp. The VR worked well when photographing from a moving boat. After only a few months the focus had degraded and I sent it to Nikon for repair. They claimed that it had been dropped, but it hadn't. The lens did get bounced around a bit -- I shoot racing sailboats from a moving boat, but it was not handled any differently than my 70-200 f2.8 VR. It's also important to note that the lens telescopes when you zoom -- and it sucks a lot of dust. Now, a year after my initial purchase, it's back to the repair shop once again for soft focus and dust inside the elements. Completely unacceptable for a lens of this price. If you treat it very gently, and don't use it in dusty places, this lens will serve you well. But otherwise, expect problems.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I bought this lens for it's reach and clarity. Yeah, it's a bit heavy, but that also helps in keeping the image stabilized. I've only had this a week, and look forward to more time behind the glass ......
The only bummer is the tripod collar, I am currently waiting for my Kirk Collar to arrive, so four stars is all I can do for now.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I just moved up north and am photographing smaller birds that I am accustomed to shooting. Not only are they smaller, they also are faster when coming in to feed. After several weeks using various lenses, TC combinations, etc. I finally received the Nikon answer to my prayers. This lens does it all for me, and it does it beautifully.

It is fast, it can be used in fairly low light (I've been shooting in the rain), it has great reach and the output is consistently excellent.

It may appear to be pricey, but it provides value.

I shoot both stills and video with this lens on my D810. The clarity of the images, even hand-held, are superb. It is not a light lens, but not bad for 400mm.

I did buy the kirk lens collar so that I get 2 points of support for the lens. Wish that had been included.

Purchased for wildlife photography. Lens components are excellent quality and the VR makes hand-holding this somewhat heavy lens possible with great results. It would have made easier if Nikon would have lengthened the tripod collar footing from 1.75 inches to 3 inches to make it easier to hold for shooting and to comfortably carry around.

Got my lens about 2 months ago. Can't say enough good things about it. I use it mostly for wildlife and birds, but have captured some awesome tiny critter images too. (Bugs, bumble bees, butterflies, etc... Although I love my Nikon 2.8 / 70-200mm lens, it just did not have the reach for all my applications so added the 80-400 to my collection. A lot of money but for me it was well worth he investment.

I bought this lens in March 2013. I have taken many images with it and have been very pleased with its sharpness, focus speed and especially its durability. The images taken with this lens can be cropped in very closely and it always retains its maximum sharpness. As far as durability, I dropped the lens on my concrete driveway. I was just sick at the thought of breaking such a great piece of equipment. The filter and the hood were broke. I replaced both and the lens continues to perform as it was brand new. WOW!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Finally decided that my 300mm f/2.8 was just too heavy for me to lug around, so traded it in (at B&H) and bought this updated 80-400mm zoom. I had the prior version of this lens [the 'D' version] years ago but gave it to my son. I debated simply buying another of the 'D' lens, but I'd read about how much better this 'G' version is so I decided to try it despite the higher price. Great decision: this lens focuses quickly and accurately, and its VR seems to simply freeze the entire world while you take your photo. Very, very happy.

Bought this lens for a couple of holidays. One to Morocco and one to Yosemite. Performed well in both situations. Morocco was a combitrip of bright skies and dark walks through the souks and medinas. It performed equally well in both scenarios. Walked around all day with it on a D800 with zero tripod availability. Tripod would have been better but was not disappointed with images. The trip to Yosemite had an equally good performance. I own a 200-400 as well but this lens gave me much more maneuverability. This is a heavy lens no question about it but it is a lightweight in comparison to the 2 to 4. I highly recommend moving forward if you are thinking about it.

This lens is horrible. Sending it back tomorrow. Nothing in it sharp. At infinity useless. I got rid of the old 80-400 for the same reason. Shooting on a tripod with remote release at all f-stop ranges on both manual and auto focus. Simply blurry. Pulled it in to 300 and shot some scenics closer that infinity and same thing. I am putting this on a D7100 cropped sensor camera so edges should be sharp and they are soft. If I could give it a zero I would. I purchased a different bracket to get good stability and that didn't help either. Nikon puts these pieces of junk out there hoping nobody has to zoom in at 100%. I do. This unit is useless.

Received this lens over a week ago and have used it almost every day since then. Got it mainly for wildlife photography and it has worked great. I had previously used a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter with my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens as recommended by a well known Nikon blogger and there is no comparison, the 80-400mm is by far superior. I didn't get the Kirk bracket because so far I have pretty good luck using an arca mount on the bottom of the Nikon mounting bracket. I did learn to leave the VR on while it is mounted on a tripod especially when it is extended to 400mm. I am very pleased with the results.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I think this lens is great, I own the previous version and this one is better. The auto focus is faster, thanks to the motor in the lens. I dont think the barrel is to big as others have stated, but I have good size paws and actually think the lens feels better in my hands. I bought this for a trip I took to Hawaii with my wife to watch the whales. The only lens filter I bought for it is a B&W clear to protect the lens. Looking at the water was a dream, the glass in this is great, the nano coating and ED lenses reduced the glare and no filters needed, I got some great shots of whales with it. In the past trips to Hawaii I had the first version and needed to put on Polarizing filter to reduce glare on water, with the new one it was not needed and the colors in the water came out great also. The build is better than the first version and the layout of the focus ring and zoom ring is much better. The only thing the lens did not have going for it was the tripod collar. But I took care of that and bought an aftermarket one and problem solved. To be honest it bothered me at first but after using the lens I feel the money spent went into the glass and its contruction, so no more worries.

So if you are thinking about getting one just get it. If you have the first version and are taking lanscape pictures in good lighting maybe not, but if you are taking pictures in the dusk and dawn, water pictures, and or action photos then I think you should invest. Plus the lens price has just dropped which was a nice surprise for me because I used the rebate to buy a gopro hero 4.

I am very happy with the investment and have not looked back.

I went to a toy train festival this weekend and the photos were fantastic. I can hardly wait for some wildlife and wedding photos.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I purchased this lens and could not remove the rear lens cap. Even after using many utilities that open stuck jars to a huge plummer wrenched that removes the toughest bolts. Nikon customer care is indifferent to customer problems and thankfully B&H is exchanging the lens. The main concern I have is where has the Nikon quality control?
