This head, in general, is rather nice. Tilt action was butter smooth out of the box. Quick release plate and mechanism are nice and easy to use.
However, pan action was horrendously stiff. It would actually shift the whole tripod, or would loosen the attachment plate from column. I popped off the pan screw cover, loosened the bolt, then re-tightened it with less torque. It now pans easily and smoothly.
Another thing is I think the tilt balancing spring is too tight. Tilt it more than 20 degrees either way, even with a DSLR+70-200 f2.8, and you have to struggle to keep it there without tightening the knob. Though gotta say, with video, you rarely need large angle tilts. Still, I will try to find a way to loosen the spring.

This is a great head, but ... and I say but because I expect a little more attention to detail from Manfrotto. The head arrived way too tight on the pan, we had to losen the center screw and that's kind of a cop out way of handling the issue. That did losten it up a little, but it may have backed off on the stability slightly also. I understand it is not "Adjustable drag" on pan, but really it shouldn't cause the tripod to come off it's legs to operate it. WAY too tight ... this should be shipped ready to use.

There is no head lock to the tripod base, there's a set screw in some of the bases but that's a PITA to get too and requires a tool. The head should have a pin you push down to prevent it from twisting on the tripod base. Especially if they are going to ship it so tight on the pan. It kept unscrewing.

That said, once I got it operationally smooth and tightened up the screw from the bottom of the tripod mount things got functional. It's smooth overall and easy to use. I like it and will continue to put hours on it in the field and in the studio.

Manfrotto just needs to pay a little more attention to quality control on this model and perhaps add that little head lock feature.

Great Fluid Head

By Bond... Austin Bond

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I now own three of these because of their decent pricing and great functionality. One for my monopod, one for my tripod, and one to quickly attach to my Edelkrone slider. This fluid head is moderately heavy, and unfortunately only comes with one, non-extendable pan arm. It has a unique top-loading QR system with a very durable twist lock. The biggest disappointment is that it doesn't have tension controls to adjust fluid drag, but at this cost, you learn and adapt.

Ultimately, love this head. It accomplishes everything I need it to.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I will be using this head with a DSLR video camera. I looked at a lot of options before getting this one, in fact I had to send the first head I got back because it wouldn't work with my lighter rig. This isn't as nice as the Manfrotto 502AH I use at work since it doesn't have adjustable drag, but it's really smooth, had the right resistance for a DSLR and the price is right.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

Great for a lightweight alternative. Not as smooth for pan and tilts as a nice fluid head. It's possible to get smooth starts and stops but you have to try a little harder than higher quality tripod heads. Great for travel.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

Ok this head looks nice but the drag tension is soft, soft soft. And the counterbalance is way overstated. I found it struggled with anything over 3 lbs. 11 lbs, C'mon. The video in this listing is ridiculous. They show a full rig with monitor and follow focus with power, probably 18 lbs of gear. That rig would be on the floor in a moment if she let go of the handle for a second.

Great tripod video head with one issue

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I love the fluid feel and video I get from this tripod, but the pan resistance is not adjustable. The tilt resistance can be adjusted, but without being able to adjust the pan, the two end up having different resistances sometimes, making pan and tilt movements a little tricky to do at the same time. Overall this head is great and the quick release slide plate is a really nice feature.

We record the local "Miss_______Scholarship Pageant". Our current tripod head was in need of replacement and I began searching out a suitable new one. I read the previous reviews about the MVH500AH and found that it sounded like just the thing. Even though some reviews complained of it being stiff when panning, I found it to be a non-issue. The panning and tilting were smooth as can be. I want to get a second one for our other tripod!

The long attaching bed makes easy to move my scope back and forth until I locate the balance point, then lock it down and the scope effortlessly moves back and forth, up and down and stays right where I leave it. Absolutely no drifting. This wasn't cheap but the quality and performance is well worth it.

Comments about Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head with Flat Base:

I use the MVH-500AH with a 6.5 pound camera and it works well with that weight. The sliding camera plate is a definite plus and the pan and tilt are smooth. I put this on a 4.5 pound tripod and use it when I want a light and easy to move run & gun system. My only complaint is that the slide plate locking screw looks like it would be easy to bend, break or lose. My 503 head has a small locking lever that does not protrude far from the head. Overall, I give it a 4 star rating keeping in mind why I bought it. If I need something heavier I"ll use my old but reliable Manfrotto 503. head.

Returned the 502 for this one. It is almost half the size of the other which was my biggest complaint. Size for field work is great. Build and component quality compared to the 502 in nowhere near one another! (500 is cast aluminum, 502 is finished/machined with higher quality fasteners) For backpacking and hiking this is perfect due to size and the quick shoe option. For tripod and short distances, I'll order the 502 again due to its better quality and range of adjustability.

Bought this head to install on a Vanguard tripod I have. I also bought a second plate. That way I can use my Canon 70D and a Canon G30 CC with an attached wide angle lens. I had a small problem with attaching the arm to the head so I emailed CS. With in one hour I received a reply. The agent had me send a few pictures of the problem. With in 10 min's I had a phone call and he walked me through the problem. When was the last time such quick response was rendered? Never for me. If they had a rating for CS it would be 5 stars. The head is what Manfrotto calls a intry level head. But it works with both my DSLR and CC. Balance was great after I set the DSLR up in the right area and also the same goes for my CC. I wasn't ready to spend this much money for a video head but now I am glad I did
