Perfect Sound - Through a Mixer

By Spud

from Walnut, Southern California

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • No Hiss
  • Records Internally

Cons

  • Sound Is Slightly Muted

Best Uses

  • Fully Adjustable
  • Live - Run And Gun
  • No Recorder Need

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

Use this for my live Man-On-The-Street type of Video Gigs. The sound is strong. When used by itself it can be slightly Boomy unless you set the Gain as needed.

I do no Post because I feed my Mics - Shure / AKG / Azden - into a Behringer 1002B Mixer. This Mic is very good and very smooth. Best of all - NO HISS! Really and truly.

If you offload the 24bit/96k WAV you get a pure sound. This mic allows me to set the SL1 / 5D / 6D / RF400 to very low levels. About a setting of (8). This means no cheap pre-amp hissy sounds.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I have used this mic before as well as a few other types of shotgun mics for dslr's. This is comparable in quality of sound and construction to the Rode VideoMic Pro. Both are great mics and will make a huge difference in your audio capture. This one is slightly less expensive!

    Great In A Pinch

    By Greg the Steam guy

    from Batavia, Ohio

    Verified Buyer

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

This mic was purchased a few days before a trip out of town to shoot video for my business. My old mic seemed to have a problem and I could not longer consider it reliable. The folks at B&H recommended the Shure VP 83,
and owning a VP 88 from the good-old-days of pro equipment I knew the Shure name was good. I only had a day to play with it before the trip, and quickly figured out which of the 3 settings were going to work best for me.
The 3 settings give the user the flexibility of changing ranges, and that will b useful for me in the future, although mostly I will use the -20db setting.
The mic also fits further forward on my camera versus the larger ones that have more length, thus it is out of my way, and more ergonomic for me.
Seems like a great mic for a smaller camera, and the service at B&H was second to none. Thanks for the prompt help and shipment. I would have given it a 5 rating but I have only used it for 2 days in the field.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I have read review I found from googles etc and decide that rather go with Rode unit. I always has been using Shure products and have suggested others so why not.

I'm very please with results. I have not yet to use outside as it has been raining every other day but I have done some in-house test with fan blowing with different setting also using Olympus SEMA-1 since I'm using VP83 with my Olympus OMD EM-5.

Quality of the products is good and far as voice quality it also surpass to me.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I have used the Rhode before - it was great as well
Except changing the battery was a bit of a hassle for me.
Spoke to BH sales and they recommended the Shure. Much easier to use and it also sounds great. I use it only as a scratch track on DSLR - but at close range it could be used for primary audio as a backup.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I needed mics for my dslr cameras, and had previously gotten microphones at about half the price that weren't cutting it. I was getting a lot of hissing due to the weak pre-amp on those cameras and I needed something more powerful. Immediately when I got the VP83 I was shocked by the high gain and high quality. At +0 db on the microphone and with the gain on the camera as low as possible I got a good volume. Also, the quality is the best on any microphone I've ever used, including one that I got specifically for recording voice. Everything is clear and most importantly I have no hissing on my videos. Maybe a bit expensive for an amateur, but totally worth it in the end. Will be using these to film my documentary.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

This microphone is well built and the brand is known by everybody who works with audio gear. You can think that is small but the sound is just as good as bigger Rode's. The metal construction assures a better mic life than others made of plastic.

Highly Sensitive Mic in A good way

      By MDC11

      from New York

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I recently lost my previous microphone a Rode VideoMic, I had had it for 4 years and it had great sound pickup. The only downside was that the rubber bands that the first model came with would eventually have to be be replaced and the suspension system wasn't good at all, and it was also extremely long. This Shure VP83 fixes all these issues I'd been having with my previous microphone, it's shorter, more compact, and has a much better lyre system. Plus the sound is still fantastic although it has slightly less substance than my old Rode VideoMic, but picks up very minute details. I find this to be a very very good microphone and even better it was on sale too. I've only used this about 5-6 times but for what I need, and can't wait to use it more

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I paired this with my Sony CX900 camcorder after it was suggested to me by a very helpful B&H associate. The sound is excellent. Love how lightweight it is and always produces great quality. Not an audio expert so I can't go into any terminology but this microphone has greatly enhanced my production quality! It also arrived promptly and well packaged. Thanks for the spot on recommendation and customer service B&H!

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I use the LensHopper on my second Pocket Camera. The first is set up with a pre-amp, but I decided I needed something smaller as a "nose mic" for the other.

As everyone knows by now, the Pocket is notorious for thin audio. This mic at +20, with the mic input on the camera set at 20% delivers very useable ambient audio, and in a pinch, I've even recorded dialog with it - as long as the subject isn't more than 5 or 6 feet from the camera. The Rycote suspension is excellent, and the Mic with the fur (I don't like "dead cat") is surprisingly useable in medium wind. I tested it along side my Sennheiser 416 on the other camera, and although not as robust, this little thing stands up pretty well.

The angled plug can create a problem for cable clamps on some cages. I filed the side of the clamp on mine - a short extension would be another solution.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

Awesome product and easy to use. I think that there is a MASSIVE difference between stock audio and this device. I should have upgraded to the model with the storage capacity internal. I could have used that in many different ways... Overall excellent product, it mounts nicely and the cord stays tucked away well.Big fan

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I was between the Rode video mic pro and the Sennh MKE400, I tested both and then I saw this Shure and gave it a try. It has a much better build quality than the others, a great rycote shock mount and is very very sensitive. The levels on my GH3 are always at 1 with it. It also has a LED to warn you about battery life and an extra +20db setting. Great microphone for the price. delivering great audio.

I picked this mic for $[*] after a $[*] rebate at B&H.It works great with my Canon 5d mark III and with my vixia hf G30. It is well built, uses one double A battery, the vibration mount is well designed and the +20db allows me to record clear sound directly in to the camera.

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

So far, this microphone has been a great companion to my Canon t3i. I have used both the LensHopper and the Rode VideoMic Pro, and I have to say that both of them have the same audio quality. But the LensHopper is stronger and will not fall from its shock mount. Plus, you can use a single battery for weeks. The only downsides are that you can't monitor your audio levels (no headphone plugin) or your battery life until it is drained, but for the price you can't complain about that.

Solid mic for what it is

        By Fa

        from New York City

Comments about Shure VP83 LensHopper Shotgun Microphone:

I returned a rode mic video pro which was extremely problematic to remove and replace the battery cover and also felt flimsy and rubber banded on basically. This is a sure fire upgrade from that as this is a sturdier more solid mic which also fictions on a cheaper battery. I have only used it once so far but it's far superior . I'm using it for a mark iii and solid and sturdy. Sound is great and gives you several options x

I also use it off the camera near the subjet to help eliminate camera noise. I purchased the Shure mic, because the company has been around a long time. Thanks B&H for fast shipping.
