Yes, the focus can be slow in dim light. Yes, for an XE camera the lens is somewhat large.

But let's get real for a minute. It weighs and is about as big as a Canon 24-105 L, cost 40% less than the 24-105 and is optically better. No one calls the Canon 24-105 a big lens, do they? It's also faster than Canon's cheapo 75-300mm too.

Like all systems and lenses, there are some compromises made. Fuji kept the price extremely reasonable and the quality, especially for the money, extremely high.

Remember, the lens is equivalent to an 84-305mm lens. Hello, it's small for a 305mm lens!! Maybe we've been spoiled by the 18-55mm.

If the whole XE series and this lens focused a bit faster and price was the same, it would be exceptional. As it is it is merely wonderful. And should firmware upgrades make it focus better, then it's a 5 star for sure.

See attached images. Compare that to any lens at the equivalent of 300mm (or even 200mm) which costs 3x as much and is 2x-3x as large.

This lens is phenomenal! It is very compact considering its zoom range, and the metal construction makes it feel robust. It produces very sharp images provided you have adequate shutter speed or use a tripod. Very pleased with this lens.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Since switching to Fuji I mainly use the primes. Got this to add a bit of reach and because I couldn't decide between the 56 f/1.2 and the 50-140 f/2.8. The lack of OIS did briefly scare me off the 56 and I just didn't like the shooting experience of the 50-140(FYI, I did finally end up getting the 56 prime and so far I just love it). This lens is a nice all-arounder and IMHO the bargain of the Fuji line. Focusing is good and IQ is great. I find it does hunt a bit in low light so it's main use for me was outdoors in well lit situations. I'm sure at some point it will be up for sale, but for now it's found a home in my bag.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

It really comes down to how you're using you're mirrorless kit. But with the recent rebate making this lens 499 at the time, I couldn't pass it up. It keeps my mirrorless kit small, which is why I went with it as my second kit to begin with and gives me some really nice reach for long reach landscape and discrete long range street captures. I have plenty of 2.8 and faster lenses on my SLR kits so it really became a non issue for me. If this is your only kit and you have sworn off DSLRs, as many have, then you may want to look at the faster option if you need it.

Fuji seems to me to be making some of the best glass I have seen from a brand in a long time. This lens is no exception. I am not going to delve into pixel peeping aspects as there are plenty of other that will. I will just say that if you need the reach of this lens, 305mm equivalent, then don't be swayed by the variable aperture. You can certainly go with the 50-140 if you need or want the fast constant aperture, but if you are trying to keep your kit smaller, this is the way to go, and you get the extra reach.

If you're worried about the variable aperture, all you need to do is search some comparable zooms to see that most of them are slower starting at F4 at 70 and going up to 5.6 or even 6.3 at 300. The most comparable lens to me is the canon 70-300 L which is a 4-5.6 variable and twice the price. No…it's not WR, but it is a well built lens and given my experience so far, this lens is on par with the image quality I have gotten from that lens when I had it.

I don't want to hear about bokeh, if you really need it then go get a 1.2 or 1.4 lens. I am not one who thinks 2.8 is the end all to be all for bokeh…that's just me. If you can control your subject to background distance you CAN get nice blur with this lens.

I never give five start reviews as I know there is always something to nit pic…but this is a solid 4 and for some will be a 5.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Fuji overdid it a bit with the stiffness of the zoom, IMO. I've tried other copies and they feel similar. So don't expect easy zooming for fast moving objects. Fortunately, the IQ makes up for this. And how. AF can however hunt at times. But all and all, for the price, this is a recommended lens.

Short and simple.... I am very pleased with the sharpness of this lens. Nice rubber focusing grip so feels stable in my hands.Wish it had the rotatable tripod ring but that would add weight that some people wouldn't like I suppose. Still, for the price I am VERY PLEASED. This lens is for my newly purchased Fujifilm X-T1 which I am also very happy I purchased. So much less visual noise than with my Olympus E-M1. I am changing my camera allegiance to Fujifilm.

This is a very reasonable lens to get to pair with the XF18-55mm kit. Add an ultra wide prime or zoom, and you can have all situations covered. It may not have the widest aperture, but OIS is handy for non-moving subjects. Very respectable sharpness, and quality build. For the price, practically unbeatable.

I purchased this lens to round out my collection of lenses for my XPro ! and have used it several times in the past few weeks. I intend to use it extensively on an upcoming motorcycle trip. I think it is excellent that I can just take two lenses ( 18-55mm and 55-200mm ) to cover just about any situation I may encounter on a trip and not have to carry several primes with me. The performance of this lens is very good though the A/F is a little slow but this is not a major concern for me. I take a lot of images through chain-link fences and where I am shooting past other objects and prefer to use focus peaking in manual mode for these occasions. The construction of the lens to me, is extremely sturdy and the fit and finish is impeccable. The image quality is very good and the bokeh is pleasing at wider apertures. Since I bought my XPro 1 in July of this year, I bought four lenses for it and they have all been excellent, and this one is no exception.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I have been using high end 70-200mm lenses for several years. They provide the "reach" I need on many occasions. In moving to the Fuji X system from DSLR I thought my mid-range zoom options would be worse than DSLR lenses. I was really surprised when I started using this lens...the IQ is excellent and a great complement to the Fuji X-E2. Based on many head-to-head comparisons with my equivalent high-end DSLR zoom, the Fuji 55-200 takes better in-camera jpg photos that are tack sharp. I think this is the benefit of the Fuji X-system equipment compatibility, as well as their exceptional optics. Either way, this Fuji lens works better for me than any other equivalent lens...and at less than a third the cost. If you have any doubts, forget about them and buy this lens. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I us a Fujifilm X-trans system for travel and for street photography. All of my other lenses are primes (14mm, 23mm, 35mm) but I often carry this lens to increase the system's versatility by covering longer focal lengths.

Image quality is very good. The lens is solidly constructed and the operational controls are well designed and laid out. For a lens that covers this focal length range it is rather small and light, making it ideal for travel. The image stabilization system is effective and increases the low light usefulness of the lens and, of course, helps a lot when shooting without a tripod. The price is quite good for a lens with its characteristics.

If it has one downside it is that it can hunt for focus with low contrast subjects. While most of the time it does just fine — at the speed we might expect from a mirrorless camera — occasionally (more like rarely, but it happens) the lens can have a very hard time getting focus. When it gets it, the focus is very accurate.
