There's been a lot of outright gushing about this lens, does it live up to the hype? Let's find out.

BUILD QUALITY: All metal construction, smooth, well damped focus ring. Looks intimidating, proportionately speaking, it looks like the 85L on a Rebel! No distance meter - 9/10

FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: Insanely quick, and pretty darn accurate! The OM-D its mated to, doesn't always have the most accurate focus, regardless of lens. The focus squares tend to find something, but it may be something just to the left or the right or just behind the target. All in though, its really quick, and *mostly accurate* - 9/10

OPTICAL QUALITY: Amazing, breathtaking, unbelievable, the superlatives keep getting justifiably heaped onto this lens, and they're all accurate. I simply cannot believe the detail I pull at 100% and 200% crops. Its amazing....

CONCLUSION: It's so rare that anything ever lives up to the hype, hence my natural skepticism when I heard the borderline gushing about the virtues of this lens... I've heard it all before - or so I thought - I'm a Canon shooter and I heard all about the the Canon 135 or 85L - and those lenses are great.... But this Olympus, rises above them all.

I've been shooting professionally for about 7 years now, and this is hands down the sharpest lens I've ever shot with and that includes some pretty sharp lenses. I would put this up against the leica's any day - really, its that good. Olympus has been on a role, specifically with their relatively new OM-D E-M5 and the lenses that accompany it.

This camera and this lens have made me a believer in the micro 4/3rds system.

BOTTOM LINE:

BUILD QUALITY: Rock solid! 9/10

FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: 9/10 - really fast, not always accurate, but I notice the same issue regardless of lens.

OPTICAL QUALITY: 10/10 - stunning. There's just no other word. Leica? Eat your heart out!

QUALITY OF RESULTS: 10/10 - I've never used a sharper lens, and that includes the likes of the Canon 85L, 135L and 70-200 f/4 IS. All are amazing, but the Olympus rises above them all.

VALUE: 8/10 - steep for a prime on an M/43 camera. But all is forgiven when you see the results. I can see the price point driving people away, but if you're in the market for making a switch from a full sized DSLRs, this lens is a must.

OVERALL: 46/50 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

FINAL WORD: If you've been a non-believer in the M43 system and their lenses, if this one can't win you over, you'll never be a convert....

This is a follow up to an earlier review. On an Olympus OM-D, this lens cannot be used on continuous autofocus either for stills or video. It hunts constantly and cannot hold a subject in focus. It is okay at infinity or in spot autofocus for stills. I don't know if that is a problem with the lens or the camera.

Sharp lens, nice bokah, and very high quality! My only complaint about this lens is the price and the fact that it doesn't come with a lens hood.

In my opinion, this is the best micro-four-thirds lens. The image quality is very high and sharp and the AF is very fast and silent, mechanically - a very high standard with a metal body.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I've only had this lens a few days, but will probably leave this lens on my camera most of the time. It's a little heavier than most M4/3 Olympus prime lenses, but worth the weight for the end result. As others have said, it is very sharp and at 150mm equivalent, allows you to be at a comfortable distance from people, yet fill the frame. I set my camera up for S-AF+MF assist, so all I have to do is touch the focusing ring for it to magnify my subject and enable me to fine tune or double check focus. This appears to be very well made and received one of the highest DxO lens test scores of all M4/3 lenses made. I debated about getting the 40-150mm PRO, but at double the cost and much larger, it would have defeated the purpose of downsizing my equipment from a full frame Canon.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

I have been enjoying the use of zoom lenses on my Olympus OM-D EM-1, but now I have discovered the clean beauty of the prime lens. I have added the 75mm f1.8 to collection of the 17mm f1.8 and 45mm f1.8.lenses. There are gaps in this group that will be filled some day.
I was uncertain as to how often I would reach for the longer focal length lens. My photography is mostly of travel, landscapes, and gardens. When this lens arrived I headed out into the woodlands to see what it could do. Soon I was focusing in on the early spring growth sprouting from the ground or branches. This light weight impressive powerhouse of a lens was far more flexible than I had ever thought. What wonderful bokeh brought simple strength small growth in the woods.
This will be a lens that will get far more use than I ever thought.

Almost everybody rates this 5 stars - me too.

I won't repeat the good stuff, which appears everywhere. The only wish I have is that the focusing ring would be clutch-type like the Pro 12-40 and 40-150 to shift into MF. Not a biggie since I adopted a front button on the OMD-EM1.

This is a special lens. I purchased it for the 150mm equivalent reach, and was influenced by the high marks published on a number of photo testing web-sites. I didn't want a larger lens because I want my u43 system to be small and light. Wow, was I surprised after using this lens a couple times. The lens is optically very efficient and incredibly sharp. The build is solid and it feels very sturdy. This lens is fantastic and will become a classic.

The quality of this Olympus 75mm 1.8 Lens is craftsmanship. The lens focus ring is buttery smooth and feels very solid. The front element screams a thing of beauty. The auto-focus is spot ON and accurate. The 150mm FOV in full frame equivalent is sharp corner to corner. If your on the Fence about this lens get it!

I give this lens a 4.5 star rating!!!I purchased this lens to do Portraits with. I needed the very shallow depth of field that it provides! Shooting this lens at nearly wide open, I get very shallow DOF... and tack sharp images!!I have shot with fast Nikon glass for many years and wanted the same look that I was used too. Being on a M4/3 Olympus OM-D E-M1 body, you must mentally adjust your aperture by almost 2 stops of light to get the same DOF of a Full Frame camera.I have found that using this lens almost wide open, I have found the look that I was after! This lens is built!! It's heavy (as far as M4/3 lens go) but not too heavy! The front element is 58 mm and it feels like its all metal and glass!I hope that if Olympus redesigns this lens, they make it part of their PRO Series lens with full weather and dust sealing... and they MUST include lens hood! Having to purchase a [$] (B&H Photo price) lens hood is outrages... but I did because I believe in Olympus quality!! I own the Olympus 12-80 mm f2.8 PRO lens and the Olympus 80-150 mm f2.8 PRO lens... and both of those come with a lens hood!Olympus are you listening!???So far I have absolutely no complaints, except for the 2 mentioned above, because this lens is fast focusing and a dream to use! Thank you Olympus!

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

When reading the reviews for this lens, people were commenting on how sharp and crisp the images were defined. This is true. I would imagine that this and the 12-40mm 2.8 and the 40-150mm 2.8 are the crowns in the Olympus line of lenses. This lens is sharper and has better characteristics than my Canon L-series lenses. The only lens I would compare it to is the Canon 85mm 1.2. Both are outstanding lenses. This lens is no exception. The focus is quick and accurate and the weight is perfect. I am using this lens on the Olympus OM-D E-M10. They are perfect for each other. The portrait results are stunning and I would highly recommend this lens. I have the 12-40 2.8 Pro lens and the only other lens I would consider is the 40-150mm 2.8. Having a 1.8 lens is perfect for low light situations. Make sure you purchase the lens hood for this lens. It is not the plastic variety supplied with other Olympus lenses. It is all metal construction and fits the lens with a metal banding tightened through a knurled knob. It is very secure and will help with any flare while using the lens in a very sunny situation. The most impressive feature of this lens is the quick focus results and the contrast obtained. You will not be disappointed. I realize it is a more expensive lens than others in the lineup....but, it is worth it.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

The title of this review says it all. This lens is outstanding... It's tack sharp. The color rendering is spectacular. It's M43 so of course the focusing is super fast. Bokeh is rich and creamy. Build is VERY solid (metal construction). The 75mm (150 equiv) focal range will take some getting use to as you'll need to back up a bit for portraits but it's definitely worth it. I thought the price was a little steep, until I started using the lens... ;) Well done Olympus.

You can think of fast primes as two-trick ponies. They can shoot in darker situations if you need to and they can deliver some sort of bokeh if you want it. On the E-M5, this lens does both very, very well. It's neither particularly little nor particularly light. Mounting it to the E-M5 makes a solid feeling but well balanced unit (in m4/3 terms) that reminds me of the OMs I loved to shoot. Color me pleased.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I was looking for a fixed fast lens to go with my E-M1 and 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. I did quite a bit of research and this lens always came up as one the sharpest lens around. So when it was on sale on B&H, I took a chance and purchased it.I know from reading the specs that this lens would be smaller than the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO. But setting the two lenses side by side, the 75mm f/1.8 looks tiny. Like the E-M1 and the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO, it feels very solid and dense. It feels quality and premium. It looks gorgeous on the E-M1. Like most reviewers, I was disappointed that the lens hood was not included. For the price of the lens, I think the hood should be included (like the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO).I am amazed with the performance of this "little" lens. Even though it is much smaller than the 12-40mm, it can take photos farther, sharper, faster, and better in low lights. The bokeh is plenty creamy. I really love the compactness of the E-M1 and these MFT lenses. I feel comfortable bringing the camera with me anywhere I go, unlike the DSLR. And people are not intimidated when they see my camera. The only drawback on the 75mm f/1.8 is its "long" focal length. My intended use for this lens is to take photos of my kids at their school assemblies and concerts. I figured that I need this focal length since most likely I won't be able to get close enough. I have yet to test out this theory since it is summer now and there is no school! But I noticed that I kept having to step back in order to fit my kids inside the frame. For those who use the zoom lenses, this could be quite an adjustment.Overall, I love this lens and I highly recommend it.

I struggled for months on what lens to get - this or the Panasonic 35-100. I know people love this lens but I really wanted something with more reach. I keep hoping Panasonic or Olympus will announce a longer prime telephoto - is a 100mm f2 too much to ask? I couldn't resist the great reviews anymore and bought the 75mm. I'm very happy I did. For me, the magic quality of this lens is that it just seems to capture more detail. I love what it's doing for my E-P3. I also use the Panasonic 20mm and Olympus 45mm.

I bought this to go with my Olympus E-M5. Love the bokeh, sharpness, and colors I get from this lens. Auto-focus has been fast, and accurate for me so far. It fills in a nice mid-range telephoto length in my kit. My only issue, if you can call it that, is that I run into my max shutter speed on the E-M5 (1/4000) pretty easily in any normal light. Easily fixed by adding an ND filter. Very happy with the lens, if I do my part. The 150mm field of view in full frame equivalent terms takes some getting used to, but I don't think it's anything that should keep you from getting this lens if you want an excellent mid-telephoto fast prime. I'd consider it a "must-have" if you like fast glass.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Silver):

So far I have been using the lens for flower and garden photography where the relatively long focal length and large aperture create a short depth of field to separate a flower from the background. The lens is perfectly sharp with a soft clean bokeh. The raw files show no distortion, vignetting, or color aberration.

The large aperture also permits use of a polarizer to control reflections, even on cloudy days.

It is also an excellent portrait lens for most of the same reasons. The long focal length allows a good working distance from the subject.
