I bought this product because Aperture (Apple's competing product) was so slow to offer support for the Nikon D4S. When Lightroom arrived, I had high hopes. Lightroom installation went well. But as soon as I tried to use it, I began experiencing problems. If I didn't have anything to compare Lightroom to, I might like it better. However, having used Aperture for the last decade, I found it very difficult to transition to Lightroom. Specifically, the whole scheme for storing photos is different. Aperature incorporates them all in one master file that's easy to backup. Lightroom stores them as individual photos anywhere you happen to download them. This can get pretty confusing and, I think, makes the system more vulnerable to accidental disruption...for instance if you decided to delete or move an image while at the Finder level.

Another pet peeve. The interface relied heavily on tiny icons which were far from intuitive and difficult to decipher. This was hard on my aging eyes and really slowed me down. Worse, the commands didn't seem to be logically clustered. And many often-used commands were nested within other commands where they were invisible to a novice user. Adobe products are generally powerful and bulletproof, but the learning curve is long, difficult and steep.

About the time I was ready to throw up my hands in frustration, Apple released an Aperture patch for the D4S. After downloading and testing it, it took me about a nanosecond to delete Lightroom and go back to Aperture.

The other thing I worry about with Lightroom is Adobe's forced migration to the Creative Cloud. They have announced that they will no longer upgrade many of the products they SELL. Basically, you can only RENT them on a monthly basis. If you decide you no longer want to rent the product, the product stops working. You could lose access to years of work. Tens of thousands of creative professionals have signed online petitions asking Adobe to reverse course on this policy. So far, they have turned a deaf ear to their users.

Net: I've decided NOT to use Lightroom at all.

It's OK

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (DVD):

It is an improvement over the Photoshop Elements that I had first. Good: one can process in batch and it is nondestructive. Bad: Adobe leaves out stuff that is rather normal to use (eg Merging photos into panoramas) so that you have to purchase another program to be able to do panoramas. Then within a month or two of my burchase thay come out with another version that adds some of the missing options. Monopolies are like that: take it or leave it.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (DVD):

Title says it all; I'd much rather own a product than pay for it on a monthly basis via the creative cloud.

I use this for casual editing and for photoshoots. I have both a Nikon D3100 and Canon 70D, and use it primarily when shooting raw.

Phenomenal tool for maximizing the quality of the photos I take, while not editing anything too drastically!

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (DVD):

Only have had a week or so to play around with Lightroom, but it looks to be just what I'll need to take my photography to the next level! May take awhile to learn all the ins and outs, but think it will be worth it, especially once I start shooting in RAW.

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (DVD):

I have and still use Photoshop but I decided to give LR-5 a try. Like any software there is a learning curve. If you never used LR I strongly suggest you watch the almost two hour video that B&H has on "Getting started with Lightroom 5".
So far the only issue I have with LR-5 is you have to use the program to import your images and it has to catalog ALL your video and images you want to use. The catalog is an important function of LR-5 and you have the option to back up the catalog on exiting.
Overall I like the program and the way you can quickly enhance you images. Watch the videos!

Comments about Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (DVD):

I bought LR 5 after Apple left me & my Aperture software/collection high & dry. Do not get me wrong...I am a die-hard Apple supporter and have been for over 20 years. I have converted my family & friends to Apple. However, I did like the Apple's move to dump Aperture. LR 5 is now installed and these are first impressions. 1) B&H was great to deal with on purchase 2) the software did not install as easily as Apple on Apple. Oh Well. 3) first group of small collection transfers have gone well. The movement of over 6,000 photos is next. 4) the on-line blogs and LR5 groups are impressive. quick searches to find solutions are wonderful. 5) I can manage the collection without a CLOUD in the sky (remember backup discipline!) New LR5 user and pleased so far.

Lightroom 5 takes you deep inside the darkroom atmosphere where you can take your digital negative and make it sing. I am not one to make those drastic changes to my photography but for those who do, this is it. Lightroom 5 makes it easy to organize the shots you take and want to keep and if your like me and don't want to delete anything, you can folder the shots that are not so good.

Have been using LR5 for MAC for 2 yeas now and just added another licensed version to my field laptop. A version 6 is on the horizon, but this program does everything I need very well. Had Aperture, but was won over by this Adobe alternative. Non-destructive development tools are awesome and easy to learn. Interface with Photoshop is flawless. Lots of output and export options. this software really shines. Only complaint is the difficulty in getting any kind of responsive direct phone support from Adobe.

A friend asked why I didn't use Lightroom , I said my pictures look great why should I change.
Long story short He took one of my so called "Great" pictures and made it fantastic!
You can do so much more in Lightroom. I switched and getting great looking pictures.

I decided that I needed Lightroom 5 after watching several B&H videos. These vidoes convinced me that I "needed" the processing capabilities that make LR5 the best tool for digital photographs. They were correct!
The user interface takes getting used to, but the biggest hurdle is learning that Lightroom needs to manage your photos, not you. Once you have climbed that learning mountain, the rest is easy - and worth the effort.

As a serious hobbyist, it was only a matter of time until I stepped up to a capable digital photo processing software program. After attending a weekend photography course, I came away with an exposure to Lightroom and decided it would be an excellent choice. I have not been disappointed. Although I have only been using it for 4 weeks, I completely enjoy the program and continue to learn about all its functions.
