I did a fair amount of research before buying this product. I originally planned to buy a large capacity thunderbolt drive for my retina Macbook Pro, but then I starting reading reviews about this DDR USB 3.0 drive and thought I'd give it a shot. It's been great so far- fast (just as fast or faster than my portable thunderbolt drive), quiet, simple to format and easy to use with time machine on my mac. The price can't be beat either- far less than what I would have spent on a thunderbolt drive of comparable capacity.

I do video production and needed to backup large files. So I read about every HD out and this one kept getting good reviews. I am a long time fan of Buffalo with their wireless routers, but they need to stick to that!I received the drive plugged it into my MacBook Pro and set it up, partitioned it 2tb for mac and 1tb for PC. I have lots of large files in both formats I needed to consolidate. So everything was going fine, I backuped a bunch of files from MacBook that was getting full and then confident (and stupidly) I deleted them off my MacBook. Then I plugged Buffalo into my PC and Nothing! It didn't show up in explorer so I went to manage devices to see if it could find it. I found it and tried to open from there, but nada.Frustrated I went back to my mack and planned to use other HD to import through mackbook USB ports. When I plugged Buffalo back into MacBook it asked if I wanted to set it up and partition!I stopped and called tech support, and they said sorry "I could buy the data recovery" That they sell to get my data back!!I said "Seriously?! I just paid $[$] for your drive that has now lost all my data and you want me to pay another $100 to retrieve it?!" They said "Yup"So long story I bought a 3rd party rescue software, not from them, and rescued my data. Resetup the 3tb and wanted to give it another try. (this time I kept my data and didn't delete it) It worked for about a week, then it just died. Wouldn't power up on mac or pc! So I'm done with them and went and exchanged it for the WD 3TB Mycloud, which so far is doing ok except it doesn't have direct drag and drop via usb3 or at least it didn't come with a data transfer cable. For $[$] they could have included that! So stay away! I wouldn't even recommend this to my worst enemy!Cheers,Matthew Rings

Comments about Buffalo 3TB DriveStation DDR Desktop Hard Drive:

    MBP video and multimedia apps
Storage, speed, etc was great until it died.

Not visible on the desktop. Spins, changed finder settings, plugged into other mbp's, bought a new cable. Just spins.

I cannot recommend this product. I am SOL and you will be too if you take your chance on this drive. I am looking for data recovery tools and wasting hours on this product.

Comments about Buffalo 3TB DriveStation DDR Desktop Hard Drive:

Really easy setup/configure. Very quiet operation. Super fast write. The only minor nits to pick are wall-wart plug; I prefer std plug w/inline transformer for added space at wall outlet. I'd also like a much higher quality case. This unit has very light-duty plastic case compared to my Seagate and WD drives. Of course its much faster than any ext drive from those firms but the premium price should provide a more premium quality case, imo. Still a solid 4-star product based on performance and ease of usage.

Comments about Buffalo 3TB DriveStation DDR Desktop Hard Drive:

Longtime loyalist to @ but recommended to take a look at B&H. Glad that I did, which is where I bought this hd. Did some research on reviews which were either kudos or curses that seemed to be based on possible defects early on. Price was right and I knew what I was getting. Quiet, fast, even though using USB 2.0 for now. Very pleased I bought it. Only minor inconvenience is very short USB cable that comes with hd and plug-in ports are in back of hd. Otherwise, I would have given this hd all 5 stars.

The unit is small, quiet works well. Have it on USB 2.0 so don't see maximum speed.
Still backed up using time machine more that 350 GB of files in about 6 hours.

Unfortunately, I can not recommend this product. After 1 month of use, the unit/drive has failed. Luckily, I never trust my data in one spot and have backups of all my files, in this case video. I don't know if this is a drive failure or the Buffalo enclosure itself but obviously, failure after one month is unacceptable. Reading the other reviews, it seems this drive is either hit or miss so if you buy this device you're gambling with your data.

This is a pretty awesome drive. I bought two for my backup system for all of my wedding photography files and so far it has been super solid. The software installation for the MegaCache Accelerator was iffy & I am still not sure if it worked correctly but the drive is fast and build well.

The cache is the story here. 1 GB of cache speeds up small file operations, but will lose data if it is not flushed with a power failure.

Yes, it is fast, my benchmarks show 170-220 MB/s, roughly double a modern hard drive. It is much slower in extended file copies, though. A 50 GB file slows down to more mortal speeds.

If you have power failure, you're hosed. Really needs a backup PSU.

So, I'm not quite sure the appropriate application for this drive. It's kind of risky and little slow for backup, and not quite fast enough to compete with SSD drives in performance.
