Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

Primary use is for nature/wildlife photography. Prior to purchase I considered and tested the EF 400 F2.8 and the EF 400 DO F4 lens. The high versatility of the 200mm to 560mm range offered by this lens was the major decision factor in purchasing this lens. I took delivery just before the peak of the spring warbler migration and have shot ~2000 pictures over the last four weeks. The picture quality is awesome and my ratio of quality shots has significantly improved. Autofocus has been excellent, there is a slight increase in focus time with the 1.4x extender engaged, but it has not limited by ability to capture rapidly moving warblers.

I predominantly shoot handheld (90% of the time) and I'm getting excellent pictures with shutters speeds in the 1/200 - 1/320 range using a 5D MK III. Although not exactly light, I have carried on a 12.2 mile trip using a BlackRapid strap.

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

I use this lens for all sports, and it is ideal. the zoom gives it great range, especially for football and baseball, and the built-in extender just adds to that.

It's easy to operate, with all of the switches being easy to use without looking.

As for the performance, it's the usual top drawer Canon quality.

With this lens and the Canon 70-200, you can cover any field of play and any sport. It's a beast of a price, but if you are serious about your shots, it's worth it.

Even though it is lighter than most long range zooms, you still need a monopod for it.

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

This lens is amazing, delivery quality image as any prime lens, plus the feature that let you work in composition. This lens (200-400 f4) do the job of 200mm,300mm and 400mm primes 2.8mm. The only difference is the aperture (a little more than 1.2mm less of those three). Using late canon model cameras as 1D X or 5D Mark III, that is not problem. I feel this lens is a new generation of photographer's gear.

Took it out immediately and shot with internal and external Extender(784mm-f13-1/1250-ISO1000-5DMkiii), I figured this should stretch the test. If I wasn't pleased it was going back! I kept it and am thrilled with the performance. The sharpness blew me away! If you can swallow the price (Took me a long time) you'll be blown away

Received a couple of weeks ago, have shot two NFL games. Still learning but immediate results are incredible. Moving from a 300 F2.8, I now have a range of 200mm - 560mm. Now I can cover the majority of the football (American) field and capture action in great detail. Paired with a Canon 1DX,it is the most flexible setup and the quality of image and build is incredible. The price is extremely high but if you can justify it, you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

Using this for mostly aviation work, with some sports in the mix. Wow. I was blown away by Nikon's 200-400, and I always wondered when Canon would jump into that zoom range, and they did, with flying colors. This is an incredibly fast focusing, sharp lens, all the way through the zoom range.
Notes-I am currently using this on both a 5D Mark III, and a 1D Mark IV. I am looking forward to trying it on the 1D X.

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

The best lens that I have ever used. I had a hard time justifying the price, but once I received this versatile beauty I love it. I do not see any difference when compared to prime lenses and the loss of 1-stop is insignificant. With the low noise capabilities of current cameras, a 4.0 lens is wonderful indoors as well as outside. I use the lens with both a Canon 5D Mark III as well as a 1D Mark IV. On the Mark IV, the lens becomes a 260-728. Incredible and worth every penny.

Headed to Yellowstone soon and decided this would be a great time to test this lens out. So far I love the ability to go from 200-560mm with the flip of a switch. Should increase the number of keepers when the critters get closer than the 500mm will allow.

The experience of opening up a factory sealed box and unpacking it, the look, the feel, that new smell was amazing! It should be for the price but you get what you pay for and this mega lens is incredibly well built and designed. It is big but does not feel as heavy as I thought it would be.Comes with two support legs. The longer is for tripods and gimbal heads. The shorter leg is for monopods. Very sturdy and comfortable to carry by the support leg.Switching between 1X and 1.4X TC has a smooth and positive feel to it. A lock is incorporated in case you need to lock in the setting.Comes with the lens hood, lens case and keyed lock with key and straps. Case is very strong and strudy. Newer style ballastic nylon lens cap compared to the other older Canon long lenses which had a leather or faux leather cap. It's big. It's heavy. You'll get lots of attention when you take this lens out! It's silky smooth and sharp focus. It'll step up your game many notches! IF you can afford the price of admission then by all means get this lens.

I have found this lens excellent for shooting wildlife. Being able to adjust from the 200 to 400 plus the extender has greatly enhanced getting the right framed shot. Also being able to add another extender is great.
The weight is the only thing of issue but expected with all the lens does.

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

Took delivery 10 days ago. My primary use is birds, wildlife and with the zoom pulled back, even some landscape images.

The versatility of the lens allows me far more use than the prime 600mm I was using. Although, I typically use this lens with a gimbal head on a tripod, I've found it light enough to take 10-20 shots hand-held with no problem, with just 15 seconds or so of rest between series. The stabilization system is stellar! Works great when trying to shoot directly overhead or following something moving through the woods or brush.

The f/4 provides plenty of light for my sunrise shooting and I find the image quality and bokeh to be exceptional. From shooting eagles a couple hundred feet away, to hummingbirds 10 feet away this lens is all I need.

The quality and easy of use is just as you would expect from Canon.

There are no negatives other than you have to dig deep to afford one. I would purchase this lens again in a heartbeat!

Comments about Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Lens with Internal 1.4x Extender:

I took delivery of the new EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X five days ago. First impressions out of the box were exactly as I expected. From the workmanship of the lens to the case and accessories, the quality is Canon's finest. Having worked with the 600mm, the size and weight were as expected. Though I have taken a couple dozen handheld shots resulting in tack sharp images, you will need to use this lens with a tripod or monopod due to the weight.

I am using the 5D Mark III body. From 200-400 the image quality is extraordinary. Even flipping the 1.4x into position any noticeable degradation is extremely minimal. I am impressed with the quickness of the autofocus and have been using the stabilizer in the on position while tripod mounted with excellent results. I find the various control switches to be easy to reach and operate, even without looking. The 1.4 lever is positioned in a natural location for my finger and has a wonderful feel. I can easily flip the lever while tracking an eagle in flight without missing a beat.

The lens produces a beautiful bokeh, similar to the 600mm. Far more pleasing to my eye than the 100-400mm bokeh. My reason for purchasing this lens was the versatility is gives me while shooting birds and wildlife. My one and only disappointment is that the lens does not autofocus with an additional 1.4x extender attached while the internal 1.4x lever is engaged. The only saving grace is it does autofocus with the internal lever in the off position and once focused, you can flip the lever and it remains in focus. As I don't intend to add an extender often, this is not of huge concern, but people should be aware of that.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford this lens, my opinion is you will find it to be an extraordinary tool to add to your gear.
