I purchased this lens specifically to use at the wider apertures not for more light per se, but for the very shallow DOF. I plan to use this mostly for close ups such as still life and food shots, shots where I want a very soft background, candid shots in social gatherings and casual portraits. As bonus, it certainly has given me some "breathing room" in low light conditions.

I checked numerous reviews and this lens seemed to measure sharper from F1.4 through F4 than the AF-S 50mm F1.5G lens, which then measured sharper after F4. I don't plan on using this lens much beyond F4 so I choose the AF-D version.

I am currently using this lens on a D80. So we have full frame lens made for 35mm film cameras being used on a DX-format digital camera. I added the Hoya Pro 1 Digital filter to help eliminate internal reflections that the coatings on the newer design lenses are supposed to eliminate. The field of view is of course more like a 75mm on a film camera so you do get slight image compression you might expect from a telephoto in that range. The slight image compression and effective length of 75mm presents both advantages and challenges.

Personally, I LOVE the color and contrast rendering of the AF-D lenses more so than the modern AF-S lenses. I am sure this will be a minority opinion. At F1.4 I was not expecting razor sharp and it is not, though it is sharp enough for what I wanted. Stopped down a bit it seems as sharp as my other (more modern design) lenses. At wide apertures, the colors are very natural and not overly saturated or contrasty...which is precisely what I wanted.

The bokeh can at times exhibit some "outlines" or appear busy or jagged, though I find this much as the same as on the AF 50mm F1.8D lens that I have tried.

Focus is as fast and accurate as my other lenses. I purchased the Grey Market version. The lens is currently doing everything I had hoped for. Being relatively new to using a DSLR I am looking forward to exploring the world at F1.4!

I usually shy away from primes, but the small size and large aperture made this one appealing since I shoot at crowded club events. After a few weeks of use, I find that the lens is very sharp stopped down to F/2.8, but at 1.4 images are very soft. Focus is accurate and fast, a definite plus, but that's where all the good ends. I'm disappointed with the build quality as the lens just feels too plastic. It just doesn't compare to any of the newer nikkor primes, such as the 60mm AF-S or the 85mm PC-E. Also, the bokeh is a bit harsh due to the 7 bladed design. The lens is prone to CA and flaring, so you have to be careful when shooting in certain conditions. Overall, I'm not too impressed, but the small size and speed of this lens makes it useful for club shoots. Nikon seriously needs to update some of there primes and this lens would be a good start.

I'm using this lens since 2003...& really it had & still a workhorse...about 98% of the time I'm uding this lens either on my D700, D200 or D90...the reason is very logical as 50mm projects a veiw that's equal to the Human eye...yes DX in format it's 75mm due crop fractor...but still; it's the lens which teaches you to compose you scene acuarately...when I started I'd my Nikon F3 with it 50mm 1.4 AI...it was great...when DSLR's arrived I quickly bought this one...a fantastic piece of glass indeed...

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

I have never been a fan of 50 mm lens on 35 mm format cameras and therefore always steered towards other focal lengths in a prime lens. But I wanted medium focal length prime lens for digital and and something that was fast, and not too expensive. for a variety of shoot environments. I also wanted a lens that I could shoot with a film camera if needed. This lens is fast, and I actually have found the focal length to be very usable. (I have 24 mm and 105 mm prime lens among others.) I now leave this lens on my camera as a starter and then change lens if needed. It is a very fast focusing, light, small lens that prove usable for lots of everyday shooting. I like it and think it was a better choice for me than perhaps a 35 mm lens might have been, which was my alternative choice with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

For people who are deciding between the 1.8D and this 1.4D, I say get this one if budget is not an issue. Besides the extra fraction of a stop, which can make a difference in bokeh softness (not really much in low-light shooting ability, since 1.8 is real), you will also get a more consistent manual focus ring that doesn't jitter or move unexpectedly-as compared to the cheaper 1.8d build. This is particularly important when shooting in low light (where AF might not work) since you can get blurred out at a fast apperture with very minor movement of your focus. Great lens for portraits and street photography. Feels sturdy despite plastic construction. Won't get much lighter than this, I think.

Awesome 14 point sunstars that you can't get from rounded aperture blades (or any canon lens). The people at DXO think this lens is better than the g version (if that means anything to you). Made in china is a bummer

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

Nikon's D lenses are fantastic! I find myself loving these over the G series all the time. The 50 1.4D is inexpensive, small, light, has great color/contrast and it's pretty close to the 50 1.4G in quality. For all those reasons this lens deserves 5 stars. However, it's not perfect. The autofocus doesn't seem to be as snappy as the 1.4G. Wide open this lens is really soft in certain lighting conditions such as backlit scenes in bright sunlight (although my wife loves the way sunflares look with this lens). At f2 this lens is almost identical to the 1.4G only I like the color and contrast on this lens better. If you need a 50mm and don't want to spend a great deal of money get this one. Also, it looks great on my df, my other copy of this lens was dropped several times and still has no issues, and it renders beautifully on film.

This lens is as advertised. Fast, great optics, light, well built. The focusing is a bit louder than the newer silent motor lenses (this one uses your camera's built in motor). Particularly good for low light landscapes (places like inside your home or a church).

This is my first prime lens so it took a little getting used to vs. zoom lenses but I have to say it's a great lens. It feels a little cheap but since it WAS relatively cheap I can't complain. It's not a fancy lens by any means but it produces great images. I snapped a couple photos of my wife with it and they turned out to be my favorite photos of her. The Bokeh is pretty nice as well as tones especially skin tones. It's ultra small and light and I've already used it for a couple small social gatherings and family events as it's so easy to carry (you can fit it in a loose pocket). Overall a great little lens to have.

This is my go to lens for video. With this 50mm prime I use it for interviews and getting a nice shallow depth of field when shooting b-roll. I love having the ability of shooting with a f/1.4 lens for those specail artistic shots.

Including a f/1.4 shot of Maestro The Cat, shot with my D200 in 2007. Sure, it's a D lens from my film days, but it works great on my D200, D700 and D300s. It's still holding up well, so why replace it? I shoot a lot of available light photos of my pooch, and she absolutely does NOT like flash! So, I shoot wide-open a lot with WB set to incandescent - and D700 at IS0 6400 (looks great!). I focus on her eye (she's usually laying down), and I don't care if the rest of her Husky fur is soft! I guess I'm just not an "everything has to be tack-sharp" and "absolutely no noise" kind of person. Since it's a D lens, you've also got a DOF scale, so you can shoot in manual focus mode at f/16, focus at a bit less than 20', and shoot NON-tack-sharp pics all day from about 10' to infinity. It's really fun! Great lens.
