I am a hobbyist coming from a Nikon D40 and I was looking for a camera with more button controls while still remaining affordable and I am happy to say that this Pentax fits the bill nicely. It has two control dials as well as 4 "Direct Key" function buttons on the 4-way controller plus an additional customizeable function button. There is a quick menu called the "Control Panel" that contains the rest of the shooting controls such as metering mode etc.

I found the handling to be good and the camera has a solid, weighty feel to it (it is a bit on the heavy side though). The viewfinder is nice and big and uses a real pentaprism instead of mirrors. The combination of the unique Pentax "Green Button" and the "Hyper-Program" P mode is a very appealing way to work. Rather then a simple program shift in P mode, aperture and shutter speed can be directly changed with the rear and front control dials, which is just like being in Av or Tv mode. Pressing the green button will then return to automatic P mode.

The picture quality has satisfied me so far, it seems very similar to the Canon T5i although the T5i does have more advanced video shooting. There are many options that you can adjust to refine the picture including highlight and shadow correction and customizeable picture styles.

My only complaint about this camera is that I would like more control over the auto ISO setting, such as setting the minimum shutter speed like I could on my Nikon. Also I think that the white balance settings should be arranged in the order of their color temperatures and it would be nice if there was a greater choice of settings for the costomizeable funtion button. These are not big issues though and mostly come down to personal preference.

I would recommend this camera to anyone shopping in this price range and I look forward to getting more familiar with it.

For the first 6 moths I really loved this camera! It is really easy to use and also allows one to do serious photography at a reasonable price.
However, the battery started acting up (on a trip of course) and I bought a back-up that seemed to solve the problem. However, intermittent power behaviour continued so I sent it in for repair. Four weeks later, the repair shop is still waiting for a battery case and even Ricoh USA has no ETA. They told me that 6 weeks was not unreasonable since this camera is still in production (there goes my Thanksgiving pics) and should it take longer than that they would "consider replacing".

So beware of the slow repairs! Especially that this camera is still in production!

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (White):

I have been hearing about this camera for a long time and finally bought it. Upon opening the package I found the camera to be very heavy compared to other brands and did not like how loud the shutter was. I returned it as I did not feel I would be willing to carry it with me as much as I needed to make it worth the price.

Great first camera. Comes with great features that only expensive canon or a nikon dslr would, such as; weatherproof, dual dial and multiple exposures up to 9.

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Finally upgrading my old K1000 film camera to my first digital model. I wanted something lower priced, with a good basic selection of features, and one that would accept my old lenses. What I now have is a camera with MORE features than I will probably ever use! Although they are nice to have if I ever want to experiment with them. I've only had the camera for a few weeks, still reading the allmost 300 page manual, and setting it up to the defaults I like! So basically I'm still becoming familiar with all it has to offer, but in the short time of use, I'm impressed with just about everthing this camers comes with! I'm allready thinking of an additional lens or two.

Finally upgrading to my first digital from my Pentax K1000 film camera. I wanted to start with a somewhat lower priced / simpler model to accept my old K lenses. What I now have is a camera with MORE features than I will probably ever use. Although they are nice to have to experiment with if the time is ever needed! Still reading the almost 300 page manual & setting up the camera to the settings I like. I'm allready thinking of an additional lens for the auto feature which in my opinion is the best part of this model! Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

The K-50 is nice and compact with a good feel. I'm still a novice but it has exceeded my expectations in every way. It has taken some great astro photos with an old Pentax M 28mm lens. Only thing I would have liked included is a hood for the kit lens.

My brother purchased a K-50 for his son, and I saw the results during their visit recently.

I've been "a Nikon guy" so it seemed, well, pedestrian to walk around with a (whisper now -- a Pentax ... shudder) around my neck.

No matter. The results are amazing. This is user friendly (my 1st DSLR, actually), with a lifetime to discover more.

I bought this for my wife. We are novice photographers, but so far she really likes the camera and the picture quality. She is using the pre-set modes until she learns how all of the settings affect the pictures. I like the fact that this camera is weather resistant. Recently had it outside in light drizzle and had no issues with it.

I bought Pentax K-50 for personal using. Camera has the same 16 Mp sensor as in Nikon and in-camera shake reduction system. K-mount and very cheap adapter allows to use a lot of 42mm manual focusing lenses with my Pentax. Old lenses have good quality and very cheap price. I satisfied with my camera.

I traded in my NEX-6 for the K-50 due to my need for a weather and dust sealed travel camera. So far, I am disappointed with the image quality compared to the Sony and even my old Panasonic bridge camera. In good daylight at 1/800 shutter speed the images are not very sharp, even with the 35mm 2.4 prime. I will probably send the camera in to Pentax to be checked under the warranty. In all other respects, the camera is very easy to use, with 2 control wheels and tons of good features.

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (White):

I do a lot of aviation photography at air shows and in the air. I have done so since the early '70's and most of the time with 35 mm film cameras. My Pentax K-1000 has never failed me with a couple great lenses. But I decided to get serious with the digital world and did some homework. I wanted to keep my old lenses in use, some are 25 years old, so I needed a Pentax mount. The K-50 works perfect as I expected.
The format is easy to understand and very user friendly on the fly. Best investment I've made in a long time. AND....B & H can't be beat with their service and speed of shipping!
I have friends who use the "N" and "C" cameras and they like to show off. I let them shoot pics with my K-50, and they are silent ! Blown away with the quality and ease of use. And, sometimes half the price they paid !
My annual trip to Oshkosh for the EAA convention will be so fun this year, thanks to Pentax and B&H! Oh, I forgot. When you have a white camera, people ask you questions, and I "sell" them on Pentax and B&H !
Keep up the great work !!

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I highly recommend this camera. I have used it 1 year now for both photo and video.
Purchased based on reviews and features over similar "big name" brands. Still pleased with my purchase.
Bought the 50mm prime and 18-55mm kit lens. Later added a 55-300mm.
Not the best for video work but I have shot great video. As long as you use a tripod and do not plan on tracking. Even disabling the shake reduction feature will not cure jumping or manual focus causes great disturbance. If you can set the shot on a tripod, focus and stand back then video will be no issue.
Great images even for the novice. I shoot in manual so I cannot attest to the auto features. If you plan on using auto just get a point and shoot as you are greatly missing the boat.

I've read a few books, shoot 35mm film at times and would consider myself a well versed beginner not a pro.

Only con: Poor battery life. I have purchased more for a very good price, $15 for 2 as a solution.

                        See the uploaded examples.

                        Hope this helps,
                        Bryan

Comments about K-50 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black):

I am new to DSLR cameras. I love my Pentax K-50 camera. Really impressed with all its features. Wish I new more about the "hands on" operation. So far have taken many pics using the Auto mode. Works great. Wish there was a simple book on what it can do. I am missing a lot, but hope to learn more as I keep using this great camera. Highly recommend it. I should have ordered the one with the two lenses, but was a little short of the cash at the time. Haven't tried their external flash, but I'm sure it will present no problem. The built in camera flash works fine. Really happy with this camera and the things it can do.
