There are a number of things that I love about this camera. First is the small size, there's certain activities I want to photograph when a small point and shoot form is the best. I also find the new tilt screen to be very handy for low or high angle shots. The images produced are super sharp, some vignetting is visible but its easily correctable in software. The overall color production is very pleasing as well, producing neutral colors that serve me well. The option for showing a level guide in the display is cool too.

There are of course a few things that bug me. The most glaring is the power on/off button. You can quickly turn the camera on, but to get it to power you have to carefully press down perfectly vertically. So about ¾ of the time it doesn't work for my stubby fingers. As I tend to use this camera while engaging in active shooting situations this is a bigger pain for me than for most folks. This 'feature' is helpful I'm sure for those times when you mistake the power off button for the shutter (potentially turning off the camera when you thought you were using the shutter button).

Another small complaint is in regards to the on-screen graphics that 'explain' each mode selected when you turn the shooting mode dial. They can be easily turned off by slightly depressing the shutter, but after awhile even that is annoying. (perhaps this 'feature' can be shut off and I haven't figured it out yet. )

The screen is easy to scratch up, so be careful. Given the rest of the camera is so robust it's a bit of a surprise that some tougher material isn't used. I may invest in one of those stick-on screen protectors that people get for the cell phones and things soon.

Although its not Sony's fault its probably worth mentioning that if you use Adobe Lightroom 4 you're out of luck in using this camera in RAW mode. I was able to update my Photoshop CS5 ACR to accommodate the camera, but there was no upgrade available for LR4. I then downloaded Lightroom 5 and it worked fine. No big deal, but I do hate getting a new camera then find myself having to shell out more bucks for software upgrades because older versions are no longer supported.

The number one question people would likely have about this camera is whether you can use it to replace your DSLR. No, but if I have to forgo the weight, size and intimidation factor of a DSLR this camera is a great choice.

The sensor is fabulous, image quality is fabulous, build quality is great, etc.

I have a few bones to pick, though.

1). It doesn't come supplied with an external charger. You have to either buy a separate charger (which I did), or plug the supplied power cord into the camera itself and charge the batter that way, which means for the duration of the charge cycle, you don't get to use the camera. For a compact camera at this price point, it's ridiculous they didn't include a proper external charger.

2. It's not a super intuitive camera to use. For the sake of comparison, while the Panasonic LX7 suffers from small sensor syndrome, it's an absolute joy to use. I didn't need a manual to figure out how to use it. The buttons are in the right place. It easy to change settings quickly. The Sony is another story. I ended up dropping 10 bucks on a 3rd party user's guide to learn how to use it since the Sony manual was a little annoying.

3. There's no dedicated AEL/AFL button, and the only button you can customize it to is the center button. It's not intuitive.

4. You can't program the ? button to do anything useful as far as I can tell. It's a complete waste of a button.

5. In AF-S, you can't reset the AF point back to the center without without manually doing it. It's annoying.

6. $449 bucks for the optional EVF? Insane! On Sony's website, I see one thing that says they dropped the price but when you click through to order, it shows the original price.

In truth, I'm slightly frustrated with the camera and in all honesty, I haven't really shot enough with it to give it a fair assessment. I find myself reaching for the LX-7 on my way out the door as my everyday shooter, but maybe because it's less than half the price so I won't feel quite as bad if I accidentally drop it and it's far easier to use. Maybe once I get a protective case for the RX100 and take it out of the house more, I'll get used to it.

Best point and shoot on the market

By Klee

from New York City

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I bought this camera for my 25th birthday and although I've only had a few weekends to mess around with it I LOVE it! The picture quality is insane! It's super user friendly, I love how easy the scene selections are, and the moving screen is great when taking pictures on a bright day! I wanted the best point and shoot for taking great quality photos on my trip to patagonia in January so that one day I can blow them up and frame them and I can say confidently that I believe this camera will do the job well. I highly recommend spending the extra money to get this camera! Well worth it!

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

The RX 100 takes good pics. That is not its problem. Its problem is that the menu was deigned for a full size professional camera. But this is a pocket camera. the menu is immensely confusing, even a year later I still struggle with it. And settings seem to change with a mind of their own, leaving you mystified to correct. The "home" button does many things with a will of its own but rarely returns you only to home. The panoramic is inoperative. The lack of a view finder is maddening and in bright sun you cannot see the screen which cannot sufficiently adjusted. Really awful camera. Zoom inadequate.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I had this camera for several months and was moderately happy with it - until I really needed it to work. Then I was refused warranty support while the camera was in warranty, run around for weeks by customer service, and finally gave up. The camera is now a paper weight, not being heavy enough for a doorstop. The Good: The lens is sharp, and in daylight the chip produces some very nice, sharp images. The controls layout may be as good as a photographer will ever find. I shoot a lot of manual shots, purposefully darker, lighter, crazy colors and otherwise difficult shots for a point and shoot to understand. The controls are so good, you can nail any situation, and nail it fast. Just to see if it could be done, I shot the same angle, and view handheld as I was shooting with my Nikon D800 on a tripod for a professional assigment. They only needed web quality work, and I used the Sony shot to save myself time. They were great shots. The Bad: The autofocus in C (Continuous) mode is unusable. Truly a disaster. Hunts like crazy and when it finally takes the image, its off. The S (Single) mode works well. Just don't use the camera for anything that is moving much. The chip is noisy. Granted I use a Nikon D800, and am used to printing up to 22x17 on a regular basis with no further post processing than what is offered by Adobe. That won't be enough with this camera. As soon as it gets dark, or you are in any type of non-natural (non full spectrum) light, you will need extra help. There are great programs out there, and given an extra $ investment you will be good to go.EXCESS HUMIDITY shorts the main processor. Really. I am not making this up. Not kidding. I took this camera to Disney with my kids in August. It was ugly hot and humid. The camera died walking around disney world. Not getting wet. No water rides. No rainstorms. Just walking around in Florida with 95 degrees and high humidity killed the camera. The first and second technical support person, and the Sony Authorized repair center told me "it happens". It also voids the warranty. Water damage via humidity. After that, your out of luck. I called for weeks, but could never get a return call, could never speak to anyone other than the first line people barely able to speak broken English, and was always told that I would receive a call back. After weeks I still never spoke to a customer service agent. Sony went from a customer centered company to the worst customer service I have EVER dealt with. And I had Verizon, and bought an early model Dell computer. It gets no worse than Sony. So, bottom line, great camera, if you don't mind buying a few, and throwing them out as they stop working. Sony will not honor their warranty, and the camera is not reliable. My jaw hit the ground when my wife said, "I guess you should have brought the big camera" after 16 years of telling me to just bring a point an shoot. Never again.

I combined the Sony RX100 II with and Ikelite underwater case, Ikelite AF35 Autoflash and a Saga 10X wet lens. My pictures never looked so good. I originally was using a SeaLife and the difference is astonishing.

The sensor on the RX100 II brings it to the realm of SLR cameras with out the bulk.

I wish I had bought a longer arm for the Ikelite strobe.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I downsized to this camera after realizing that I didn't use my DLSR very much because it was too big and heavy to carry around. The Sony RX100 II takes nice pictures. They aren't quite as good as the photos from my Canon Rebel T2i but they are close, and I don't have to futz about with lenses. You can view photos at 100% and not be disgusted by water-paint looking nastiness.I have played around with some of the different modes but spend most of the time using Shutter or Aperture modes. I do like the High Dynamic Range option which takes 3 shots and combines them. One of the reasons I got this camera was the WIFI options. I mostly don't use them however :). The WIFI transfer of pictures is quite a bit slower then with a USB cable, so I just plug the camera into the computer via USB cable like a caveman. Using a tablet or smartphone to control the camera remotely is neat but offers very limited control options. You are pretty much limited to automatic shooting.I do enjoy being able to connect directly to smart TVs and display pictures on the television.Battery life is good for my uses. I charge it whenever I transfer pictures to my computer. With a 64GB SD card I can take over 4000 photos at the highest 20 MegaPixel setting. One complaint is it takes a second after taking a picture until you can review it, not a deal breaker for me though.Overall I'm happy with the camera and would recommend it for someone who wants good pictures without the various hassles that a DSLR will bring.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

The Sony RX100MII is quite a technological marvel. I have used dSLRs for years, mainly in the Canon-brand camp. But, while getting ready for a vacation, I decided I didn't want to lug around all of the extra weight, lenses, etc. Since I frequently use my dSLRs in manual mode, I was looking for a point and shoot that offered me all of the features I was looking for--manual mode, RAW image capture, low-light sensitivity, fast lens, hotshoe, etc. I honestly thought I was going to have to make some major compromises. That was until I stumbled on this little beauty. It has all of the features I want, plus amazing picture quality. Though it's not a dSLR, it does approach my Canon 60D in image quality, which is saying a lot. The only drawback is the fixed lens. Maxing out at 100mm, it is by no means a super zoom. If that is an issue, Sony's a6000 is highly recommended. And, at this price, the RX100MII is edging into the mirrorless, interchangeable lens territory. But, keep in mind, you're getting one hell of a great camera, at any price. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for the portability of a point and shoot, but all of the prosumer features and quality of a dSLR. You won't be disappointed.

I like it a lot so far. I've only ever had Canon cameras so I was reluctant to stray at first, but in the limited time I've had to play around with it, it seems relatively user friendly, very powerful and capable of doing everything I could ever imagine and more. I am very impressed with the quality and sharpness of the pictures and the range of aperture options/function. Really excited to learn more about this camera!

This is great camera if you want something small enough to fit in a pocket and still take great pictures in almost any setting. Good zoom range but wish it was a little longer (maybe 120mm). The large sensor gives reasonably low noise in low light, although not as good as current DSLRs of course. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

Pictures are clear as my Cannon. It is finally nice that compact point and shoot camera manufacturer gives you the same result and flexibility as a full DSLR .

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

This is a quality camera. I was on the fence about buying a Sony since I have always owned Canons, but am very happy I bought this one. It was a lot more expensive than I usually spend, but it was time for me to move up to stellar images! I am still learning how to use all the features. The manufacturers booklet included is very thin and gives little information. Their online manual in a PDF is larger but not comprehensive enough and too many pages to print out. I recently bought an aftermarket book written by a photographer to learn how to use this camera.

I like the WiFi option AFTER I figured out how to set it all up. I have both an iPad and a PC. If you are not technically savvy, you will have difficulty getting your devices to recognize the Sony. The iPad was easier because you use an App, but the PC setup was very vague. I finally found something online that told you need to register the camera as a device on your PC. Once that was recognized, it works well and transfers pretty quickly even with my slow internet.

Another reason I bought this camera was to shoot and learn how to use RAW files. I was disappointed that Photoshop cannot work with the Sony RAW files directly. I finally saw a very simple paragraph in one of the manuals that said you needed to download the converter software from the Sony site. Once done, you can then see and edit the files within that software, and export to other formats, but still cannot use the RAW format in Photoshop.

I do not like that you have to charge the battery within the camera. So, I purchased the external charger accessory kit with extra battery which means you can charge one battery while using the camera with another.

The camera is a bit heavy and awkward to hold, since I am used to a point and shoot. I am sure I will get used to it eventually, but the addition of the optional Sony Jacket Case give a better grip.

I checked out some reviews and found that the DSC-RX100 II was the highest rated for cameras in the $ and below range. It has not disappointed. It is a great camera and shoots great HD video. Very satisfied

I have the Sony A6000 that I totally love, but this little camera does almost as good but in a smaller package. Yes, it is pricey but it is also a great product.

Absolutely a great camera! I am not going to lie but the zoom was kind of disappointing. I will still give this camera a 5 stars because the picture quality was amazing. I will post up some pictures.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I just purchased this camera and spent two weeks using it on a two week trip to France. I used the camera in a variety of situations and found that it took consistently great sharp photos. I mainly used the automated photo settings but it was also nice to have all the various options available to set as I needed it. Video was also very sharp.

The only concerns / issues I had with the camera were with the flash and gripping the camera. The flash placement makes it easily to accidently hold it down. The flash can get stuck coming out and you have to adjust it to ensure it correctly pops up. The case is very slippery and can come out of your hands easily. I highly recommend adding in the grip and also screen protector for this reason.

Overall and excellent camera that takes great pictures. Multiple other travelers on my tour noticed the camera and the pictures it was taking and asked me about it.
