I bought this to replace a similar Sony MP3 player I bought in 2008, which I recently lost. That was a fantastic piece of kit, with unbelievable battery life.

Thinking that since six years had past, I was expecting that Sony would have even better MP3 players today, for even better price. While the price has indeed fallen slightly, this MP3 player is unfortunately inferior to the previous one I had. There is no dedicated hold switch or volume rocker, and the controls aren't very tactile at all. Battery life is not as good as it used to be.

Sound quality is great however, as you'd expect from a Sony product. That, and the ability to drag and drop files directly on the player (no "ITunes" needed) is still the reason why I'd buy a Sony MP3 player over an Apple iPod.

I purchased this MP3 player for my grandfather for his 77th birthday. So this review is geared towards how intuitive and simple it is to use.

Let's start with the good:
1. It is fairly easy to navigate through the songs, as long as you are JUST navigating (explained in the bad...)

2. It is extremely easy to add songs to the device using a computer.

3. It has great audio controls, and it sounds very nice.

4. It's made of plastic, and it definitely feels that way, but it does feel well made, overall.

Here are the problems my grandfather and I have experienced:

1. Because there are no dedicated volume buttons on this model (they are the up and down buttons, also used for navigation), you have to be in the "Now Playing" window to change the volume. So, if you're navigating through your music while listening to songs, and a song comes on and is too loud or quiet, you have to hit the "Option" button, select "Now Playing", adjust the volume, and then back out and re-find the folder you were browsing. Especially frustrating if there are a large number of albums or songs in the list you were going through. IT DOESN'T REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE PREVIOUSLY NAVIGATING.

2. On the same lines as No. 1 - because there is no dedicated pause button (it is the center button, also used for navigation), in order to pause the song you are listening to if you are navigating other folders/song lists, you have to hit the "Option" button, select "Now Playing", pause the song, and then back out and re-find the folder/group of songs you were browsing through. IT DOESN'T REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE PREVIOUSLY NAVIGATING.

3. There is an option on the main screen to shuffle all songs, but I don't believe there is an option to shuffle a single artist's songs, or a single album's songs. If there is a way to do this (I don't think there is...), then it is a hidden option and not intuitive.

4. When the device power saves (by turning off the screen) when you turn it back on, it goes to the last screen you selected something from. i.e.-If you go to the FM tuner and select a radio station, then back out, go to "Music", select "Artist", choose a specific artist, pick an album, and start looking for a song... but then ignore it for a minute (ask the name of a song, take a phone call, etc.) - when you return to it, it will have navigated you back to the FM tuner. It's the same if you select a song by artist A, then navigate through artist B's songs, if it sleeps, it will go back to the "Now Playing" screen of artist A, and you have to re-navigate to the folder you were just browsing. IT DOESN'T REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE PREVIOUSLY NAVIGATING.

      Comments about 8GB NWZ-E384 Series Walkman MP3 Player (Red):

      Pros:

      * Superb sound out of the box
      * Very comfortable earbuds
      * Fast charging (< 2hrs)
      * Long battery life (26+ hours on one charge)
      * Easy file transfer with Windows Explorer - no iTunes or WMP needed
      * Flexible music playback options

      Cons:

      * Playlists can only be created/edited/deleted when connected to a computer and using software - there's no on-device playlist capability
      * Sony MediaGo software is very clumsy
      * Files can only be deleted when connected to a computer - there's no on-device file delete button
      * Album art and on-screen text not sharp
      * Album art sometimes incorrect or does not display at all
      * Very slow single-speed cue function
      * Labor warranty only 90 days

      Even with the cons, and 40+ years of experience with home theater and stereo, I've never heard better sound. Highly recommended.

        Comments about 8GB NWZ-E384 Series Walkman MP3 Player (Black):

        I bought this so that I could listen to music I borrowed from the public library. I rip the CD and drag the files over to the device very easily using a desktop computer.

        I find that the charge lasts very long! It's so environmentally friendly since it doesn't use batteries. It also makes it very lightweight.

        The sound is incredible when I listen with its earbuds or my own headphones. This is very important to me and partly why I chose a Sony device.

        It does take some getting used to but as long as you remember to pause a song first before turning the device off, it's easy to use and to shut off.

        I highly recommend buying from B&H vs. other retailers. It shipped cross-country in two days! Excellent service.

            I use this device when working and exercising. It is tough and can take alot of abuse! It has had my entire weight fall on top of it while running and the only damage was the top is scratched. Very tough. It has an easy to use operating system. Very good sound quality. I wish it has a power button instead of having to hold down the options button to turn it off. Very satisfied.

The battery last longer than an ipod, I like to take it when I go on long road trips or even to the gym because it is small and easy to carry. I sometimes play music to my models, when doing a photo shoot, so I just plug it to some speakers. Very easy to use.

He uses it all the time- in his car, on walks, etc. Definitely worth it and if you're not looking for the internet connection or complicated software, this is the way to go.

                  I have been using the product for the past three weeks or so. The sound quality is great but the screen and the overall design and functionality need much improvement. The screen is already very much scratched and looks much worse than my Samsung Q3, which has been in use for over two years. The battery life is another weak point. There is no way this thing can last 30 hours on a single charge. I doubt if it can last 15 hours. To sum it up, the sound quality is great but everything else sucks. Is it worth it? No! Sorry, Sony. I have always liked your products but not this time.

                      Comments about 8GB NWZ-E384 Series Walkman MP3 Player (Black):

                      It's very compact and the battery life is good. So far I have only used it for listening to audiobooks while driving with it plugged into the car's "Aux" input. It would get 5 stars if Sony had simply made it less annoying to turn on. It takes at least ten seconds to hold down buttons to turn it on which is totally lame, as others have said. Let's hope Sony puts out a software upgrade to fix this awful design. Once it's on it's easy to use or adding new media is also easy.

                        Great product. Well built. Lots of features like an alarm, very good sound quality, etc. I am very satisfied with the product. The only cons is that it is a bit expensive.

                          Great replacement for my broken I pod. Love the size and the ease of adding music and transfering it to my other computer. B&H did the best deal!
