I've never used the first version of this lens, so I can't compare them, but I did compare this one to the Oly 17mm f1.8 on my Pen E-P3. I only use autofocus, so I much prefer the pancake size of this lens to the Oly (the Oly lets you pull the focus ring toward you to switch to manual focus - a neat trick). I know there have been complaints about the autofocus on version 1 of this lens. What I've discovered on this one is that it has a real problem autofocusing on horizontal contrast. On vertical or multi contrast points the focus quickly snaps into place. This isn't a problem for me; I only use the center focus point, I point at what I want to focus on, focus, and recompose, which is how I've been focusing for 35 years. The Oly definitely focuses a little faster, but not enough to make a difference to my shots. I prefer this focal length for people shots, I prefer the smaller size, it's a little cheaper, and I can't discern any difference in picture quality (but you may be pickier than I). This is the lens that will live on my camera.

This is a great lens for indoor photography. Nice small lens, good field of view, excellent construction and image quality is sharp. Unfortunately this lens focuses very slow. The Olympus Zuiko lenses all have blazing fast and silent focus. Not so with Panasonic. Something about the design, it hunt for focus with every shot. Even if you focus and lock in on the subject. If you refocus again it will bring it out of focus and lock in again. This is not a good lens if there is a lot of action as could occur with many indoor event photography. It is usable, but the 17mm Zuiko is probably a much better lens. I may sell this one to get that.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

I was drawn to this lens mainly because of the fast aperture and the small size. I wanted a lens that I could keep on the body while in my messenger bag, so that I could pull it out and take shots quickly. The kit 14-42mm made it too big for my bag.The image quality is great. Good sharpness and color saturation. The only downside is that the AF is noticeably slow. I only have the kit 14-42mm to compare it to.The Olympus 17mm f1.8 was the only other lens I considered, but I went with the Panasonic mainly for it's slightly smaller size.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

As others have noted, the autofocus is very slow for stills, at least on Olympus bodies. I had on an EM5 but returned for the Olympus 25mm 1.8.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

I bought this lens as one of my start out lenses for my Panasonic GH4. For the price, I found this lens to be a perfect fast prime lens to start out with until I have the money to buy more expensive lenses. It is unbelievably tiny, very fast, and a solid focal length.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

This lens is light and quite bright. However, it is a tiny bit soft in the corners for my taste. Compared with Four-Third lenses 14-54 and 50mm fixed, this lens is somewhat less sharp in the corners. It is quite sharp in the center, even full open. So it is a great lens for portraiture, but not quite for low-light landscape photography.

I use the lens for video with GH4, and I would not mind having the option of image stabilization. Since it is functionally 40mm (2x crop on MFT)it is very useful everyday lens. Very light and small, and you can get very nice shallow depth of field at f 1.7

I bought this lens to use on my omd em-5, specifically for travelling/tourism, replacing my 12-50mm kit lens.
This lens is sharp and compresses well. I used mostly primes back with my D-SLRs and am happy to be back at it with this lens/body combo.

not 5 stars due to it's slightly slow auto-focus. I found a few situations where it hunted a bit and is not too quick in it's search.

Optically, this lens is okay, but not really much different than other m43 prime lens with a similar focal length. However, this lens is very small (not that the others are large).

By current standards, the autofocus on this lens is extremely slow, not unlike a macro lens. If you can live with slow AF this lens is okay. This lens is also noisy during operation.

For general use where focus speed matters, the Olympus 17mm f1.8 and 25mm f1.8 lenses (I own both) are much better lenses.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

This is a first class lens for MFT users. I already own the fine Olympus 17mm F1.8 lens, and needed a second lens in this range for my wife's E-P5. In a back to back comparison using my E-M1 (tripod and self-timer), the Lumix lens is noticeably sharper throughout the range of f-stops, when viewed at 100% on screen. No "chatter" during focusing was noticed on either body. Perhaps the Lumix is a bit slower at focusing, but not significantly so.

Pancake size is appreciated by my wife. Slightly tighter field of view on the Lumix should be considered by all, and its lack of a focusing scale may be an issue for some advanced photographers.

Picked this up at a steep discount when I bought by Lumix GX7 and am really glad I did. The lens seems very sharp with very little distortion. I'm super-please with it, and now understand why so many rave about this lens.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

This is a really nice lens for narrow depth of field which is why I bought it. The f stop goes down to 1.7. Better than the original lens kit I purchased for my Lumix GH2. An added benefit turned out to be that it is very light and small so it is great for whipping out the camera for those quick shots. So, not as cumbersome as the longer 14-140 lens. The downside is of course, it has no zoom. But to get a shallow depth of field for a 4 thirds camera like the Lumix that would have zoom capabilities one would spend $[$]instead of the $[$]that I paid (best price I could find, actually. Thanks B&H!). If you are looking for a zoom lens with a low f stop of .95 for a 4 thirds camera look at this lens at B&H PHOTO: Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Lens for Micro Four Thirds CamerasIt gets AMAZING reviews. .95 f stop is insane! It will be bigger and bulkier than the one I got but it seems like for the price it can't be beat. If I had a grand in the budget I would definitely have gotten the Voigtlander Nokton. I'm very happy with my purchase, though. Shallow depth of field is good for me at this moment for taking pics of my son around the house where I don't want the background in focus. I just have to walk a little closer to the subject because of the lack of zoom. Still, for me it isn't a big deal. It's also great in low light situations!

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

Recently bought a GM1. In many ways the 20mm f1.7 is the perfect lens for it. It keeps the size small and is a very flexible focal length. In most situations, the lens performs really well. However, in very low light, the 20mm f1.7 has a terrible flaw. Black areas of the photo will often show terrible bands/stripes. The issue is thoroughly discussed in many micro 4/3rds forums and can happen with many micro 4/3rds cameras. It doesn't always happen, it may depend on what kind of lighting is around. If you don't shoot in very low light, you may never notice it, but if you do, you'll eventually find many of your dark photos basically ruined by totally unacceptable banding.

I haven't had this lens for long, but so far it's been working great on my E-P3. The camera/lens combo thing is a tidy little package that has done great in poor to marginal to excellent lighting.
