I got this lens because I was tired of using my old Canon 50mm 1.8 lens and micro four-thirds adapter for my GH4 and needed a compatible lens that would let me adjust my aperture since I was unable to do so with my adapter for my GH4. I must say though, this lens is definitely more than worth getting! What sold me was the speed having an aperture of 1.7 which is slightly faster than my Canon at 1.8 and what makes me love this lens even more is the auto-focus feature that it has. I normally do video work with my camera but I found myself taking more and more pictures once I purchased this lens. It produces great bokeh wide open all while still remaining pretty sharp. I'd recommend this lens to any videographer/photographer who needs a "go to" lens for all of their projects and even professionals who are looking to add a 20mm to their arsenal of glass.

This is a great lens for indoor photography. Nice small lens, good field of view, excellent construction and image quality is sharp. Unfortunately this lens focuses very slow. The Olympus Zuiko lenses all have blazing fast and silent focus. Not so with Panasonic. Something about the design, it hunt for focus with every shot. Even if you focus and lock in on the subject. If you refocus again it will bring it out of focus and lock in again. This is not a good lens if there is a lot of action as could occur with many indoor event photography. It is usable, but the 17mm Zuiko is probably a much better lens. I may sell this one to get that.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

Just used this lens for 1080 video as a stationary angle in a low light church on a GH4 body. Capture of detail and sharpness much better than the main video camera used (Panasonic AGAC90). No focus drifting. Exposure at 1/60 3.5 ISO 2400 and still great sharpness (corner to corner) and shadow detail without much graininess. Semi-wide angle framed entire front of church from 60 feet away. Thought of getting the pricier 15mm Lumix Summilux, but think this is a good call. Once I get into 4K the cropping and sharpness will enhance the value of the 40mm tremendously. Very reasonable price and fast shipping a plus, plus, plus.

    Extremely Sharp

    By Jim

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

I purchased this lens for use with a recent purchase of the black magic micro cinema camera.

I expected the lens to be sharp, just as all of the reviews say, but what I didn't expect was this incredible focus ring.

It's not the distance throw of a true Cine lens, but a far enough throw that you can attach a gear to the ring, and a focus control on your rods, and obtain cinematic focus points.

If you're doing film work with the micro or pocket cinema camera, don't expect this lens to fit all your needs. You'll rarely get a decent shot on a car mount because this lens is just not wide enough at the 2.8 crop.

I use this lens as my default, throw in the bag when space is of the utter importance. For impromptu indoor pics, this is the way to go. The 1.7 aperture focuses in super low light. Bokeh is nice, and images are sharp. 20mm on micro 4/3 is a very useful length. Not too wide, but not too cropped either.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

I am new to the m43 world. I have shot canon for years from film to digital with my main camera and lens combo a 5d3 and 35L. Got a g7 for a smaller family camera and for the video capabilities. This is a perfect camera. Super sharp. Quick. Good color. Oh and super small. If you have a m43 camera, this is a must own lens.

Perfect lens for everyday use and street photography. Very light weight and looks great on my LUMIX G7. The low light capabilities are a little slow in auto focus but when using Manuel focus the lens produce high quality night shots.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Black):

For low light (under forest canopy and evenings) this lens is great. As others have observed, the auto focus is slow. I would say phlegmatic, but it ends up spot on. I really like this all metal lens for indoor use because we are in an era of real time composition the later cropping. This is the lense for you if you have the pixels to work with. I shoot at higher resolution as a result. YMMV.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

I use this lens for mostly video but for casual photography as well.
I'd like to say I only shoot video in controlled environments with proper lighting but I find myself doing "run and gun" video as well (especially for coverage). This is where the F1.7 aperture comes in handy. Everyone knows M 4/3's doesn't handle low light very well and fast lenses are a necessity for those sensors.
Speaking of "run and gun", this lens doesn't have Panasonic's excellent O.I.S. but if you use a tripod and/or stabilization rig then you wont miss it too much for video. As for photography, low light shots with slower shutter speeds might be affected by hand-shakeyness if you aren't steady.
The 20mm (40mm equivalent) is a nice useful focal length and great for indoor shooting but works great for street photography as well.
Which brings me to the biggest con of this lens. The lens is quite slow to focus - especially in low light. This isn't a huge deal for me because I use manual focus for the most part for video. But photographers with fast moving subjects might have some complaints. My last con would be that it's minimum focusing distance is a bit far for this focal length.

Overall This lens is an amazing value. It's made in Japan and has a solid build quality. And of course, being M 4/3's, it is small enough to fit in any camera bag collection... And looks great on the camera too!

Great lens for my filmmaking needs. It's compact and at 1.7, it's fast enough for light challenged locations. It is important that any perspective buyer understands that the auto focus is slow. Very very slow. It's great if you lock your camera down on sticks, but run and gun is a challenge.

I have been taking photographs since I picked up my first camera while serving in the Army back in 1959. I shot weddings, worked for a newspaper and been published in magazines and this is one of the best lens that I have ever owned. A while back I gave my first 20mm lens to a son, but soon realized I had to have that lens. Today I shoot street and its size makes a difference in how I am seen. I don't look like a pro. I also own the 25mm, which is also a tack sharp lens as they both are, but that small size of the 20mm makes the difference for me. I mount this on my Panasonic GX7 and love how the work together. I have owned lens that cost three times as much that were not as good as this 20mm lens.

Comments about LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. Lens (Silver):

I had the same title for my review when I bought the 14-140mm V2 i.e f3.5 - 5.6. At the time, I suggested that the 20mm would be a great complement to that big zoom. I just got mine, and it is.

Yes, it has a few warts. Just as you have read, ad nauseum, the autofocus is a tad slow. So what? I like to shoot in manual mode with this fine little baby, to bring out the best that this lens has to offer.

It is fast optically, sharp, small, light and compact. It is a real pleasure to use for almost everything. It performs well in low light, as a walking around lens, for portraits, lanscapes, you name it.

When I'm tired of dragging around my superzoom, I snap the little pancake on my GF6 and am ready for more.

It may be that other lenses have different benefits, but at the current price the little 20 can't be beat.
