As a professional videographer in local news I use a Panasonic HPX-370 every day. With my style of shooting a lot of people have told me I should look into still photography.

I have a lot of print colleges in the field that shoot on a 5DIII, 1D-x and Nikon D4. They all have expensive Nikkor or L-glass and I definitely see the beauty in what they produce. The more we talk tech, the more I wanted a DSLR, and maybe start doing some side still work.

After much thought, looking at the prices of full frame vs. crop frame sensors, Nikon vs. Canon, I decided that I could afford a crop frame, and save the money for nice glass. A "pro" camera, with low quality glass to me proved a difference.

I was about to buy a 6D when this camera came out, and honestly given the features I was sold on the 70D.

As a video guy, the articulated screen did a lot for me and the notion of pulling focus like on my iphone was neat. I figured with an upgraded sensor from the 7D (too impatient for the mkII) I would be buying a starter camera that would pave the way for me to buy a "pro" rig someday. The Rebel class statistics just didn't impress me.

In video I always go low gain more light. With this camera, getting fast glass and shooting with the highest shutter possible at 100-800 ISO is the key. It produces remarkable image quality to me for the price. The in camera noise reduction is pretty solid and the focus is remarkably fast. (I gave up pulling my own focus, AF is faster.) Know the limitations of your camera, and expect noise if you don't light accordingly.

If you like to do portraits the 50mm f1.4 is the way to go. (remember a budget) The 18-135 STM lens is quiet, and has a nice throw on a crop sensor. It makes me question carrying around the HPX-370. (aside from no pro audio inputs.)

A headphone jack would be awesome.

The camera is good for low ISO long exposure (I want to take it to a stargazer party, (I considered a 60D with the Hydrogen Alpha chip)

I would use it instead of my old Sony Z1U for my next "movie" production. I've realized the DOF is so much better with a DSLR than a video camera. The Dynamic Range with a polarizer astounds me.

Save the money if Full Frame vs. Crop frame is in question, take a few features, and get nice glass with your money.

Remember it's not the camera that makes the photographer, it's the photographer that makes the camera!!

As is the case with many other owners' experience with the 70D, mine is also extremely underexposing my indoor low light bounce/diffuser flash photos. Whether I'm bouncing the 430ex II flash off a white ceiling that's about eight feet high or using a Sto-fen diffuser attached to it.

Whether the lens being used is the Canon 15-85 or the 55-250 STM, all low light indoor photos with the diffuser attached and with the flash head tilted 45 degrees, or 180 degrees, or direct facing are very underexposed. Same results with bouncing the flash.

The photos are even more underexposed when I'm zooming in on the subject.

However, If I use FEL before snapping the photos, they all come out looking great, zooming in or not. Without FEL the same photo is very underexposed.

If I use the same flash setup in manual mode, without using FEL, and adjust the power down to say 1/2 or 1/4 or somewhere in between, the photos seem properly exposed (as long as I dial in the correct flash power adjustment). With a zoom lens that has a variable aperture, it's a hit and miss approach and quite cumbersome.

Also, I tried the same lenses attached to my Canon T3i taking the same photos as I did with the 70D using the same flash and diffuser without using FEL. The photos all came out looking very good with no underexposure whatsoever. Then I tried using FEL with the T3i. There was no difference between using FEL and not using it on my T3i. All photos with and without FEL were properly exposed and looked great.

I use bounce flash indoors a lot on our one year old granddaughter. I never had this problem, or any other issue, with my T3i. I guess I'll have to resort to FEL use, but that amount flashes takes a toll on an infant. She begins to cry after a few photos if I'm using FEL for each one. Plus, it's hard to get candid shots when an FEL pre-flash is being used.

I'm now wondering if this will negatively effect exposures on outside fill flash photos with a diffuser attached.

Apparently, many people are having the same issue with the 70D and have supposedly contacted Canon about it. I sure hope a firmware fix is coming soon.

The EOS 70D packs alot of camera for its price point. The option of Live View with a rotatable viewing screen makes formly impossible shooting angles a breeze. The noise level of the Digic 5 processor is also on the acceptible level.

I LOVE this camera. The images are clean and sharp. this is a great backup camera or one if you are not quite ready for the big time. The wifi makes it easy to share to your phone or ipad. I wish it did a little better in low light, but it's not too terribly bad.

I upgraded from a T1i. The 70D balances much better with my Sigma 18 - 250mm zoom. The camera's built-in wifi and the available smartphone app work brilliantly. Still much to learn but the default auto modes seem very flexible and the auto-focusing is very quick.

In short, don't be. If you've done your research on this camera, you've no doubt read the rumors that the 70d does not focus well at large apertures. This was a huge concern for me as I shoot wide open often. For the first two weeks I tested this extensively mainly with my Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens. I shot photos of any and everything at f/1.8 just to see what the results were. Using Single Point AF, focus was tack sharp. The shots in which the focus wasn't perfect were totally my fault. Definitely not the camera's. There's not much room for error when shooting wide open.I have no regrets in buying this camera. It was a fantastic upgrade from my T3i. I didn't feel that I was ready for a full frame and I'm not even sure I want one as I really enjoy the extra reach I get from my lenses on a crop body. Some miscellaneous observations: The shutter is quieter than the T3i. That shutter is fast! Noise at high ISO's is slightly better but not significantly. The touch screen is quite nice, although I've found that I use the little screen on the top of the camera more. Canon has made core functions very accessible here. I feel this camera is best suited to those already somewhat familiar with a DSLR.Just buy it! You won't regret it!

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I love the features that this camera offers, especially the WIFI and the touchscreen that I can move around while filming. This has a lot of great features, the pictures are pretty crisp, but I am not a fan of the canon photo color. I have used a Nikon for many years and find the colors are a lot more true to life. I do like the ability of focusing while I film, it does not always work as well I would have liked. But overall a great feature. I am very happy with this camera, I was going to get the Canon 7d Mark II. The price was a little too high

After my 60D died with 285,000 shots I moved to the 70D and love the new larger sensor, faster shutter and new focus system. I shoot a lot of birds so the reach is what I am after here and my 100-400 Canon is my go to lens. I live at the Beach so I am there several times a week for sunrise where I use my long lens along with my Canon 24-105 and the 10-22 for the real wide shots.

I just started using this camera and so far I'm loving it. The flip out touchscreen display is a great feature. Very light and easy to tote around. Haven't dropped it yet so I've yet to test its durability. Takes great video too!

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This is another hit for Canon. I replaced my Rebel T4i with the 70D body since it was definitely an upgrade and yet a perfect lightweight travel, walk around camera for me. I'm just beginning to play around with video too and it seemed perfect for that also. The articulating back is great for closeups and also travel photos and the touchscreen is outstanding. I appreciate Canon's commitment to their DSLR line of camera bodies--that's important to me as a long-time Canon user. I can't think of a single negative regarding this camera body--it does what it does very, very well.

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

Both a comment and a short review. An earlier reviewer commented on not being able to easily change exposure compensation. It can be done exactly as he wishes, hold the shutter button down and rotate the main dial in either direction. While you can't see the exposure change - the screen is black - you can easily count the increments. And it is useful as the camera does tend to blow out highlights a bit. Overall the camera is very good, fast focusing, other than the highlight issue (usually easily taken care of post) light and sturdy. My only complaint is that it often has a hard time finding sharp focus, especially pulling a light colored subject out of a confused background. It will pull the subject into focus, but then immediately return to the background. Manually focusing on the subject, then continuing with autofocus will usually but not always fix this. I find multiple exposures of more distant objects, and even relatively close ones, is always the best to get a very sharp focus. I changed to back button focusing, set the diopter setting for my eyes, and can find the sharpest focus by multiple tapping of the button. Not suitable for every shot, but is for most. And when it is sharp, it is very sharp (especially in combo with my Canon 70-300L lens, but also with my Sigma 17-10). I frequently take photos of birds that are completely within the center focus square that when cropped compare in quality to those from a 7D/100-400L combo used by a friend. However, overall I can notice the focus difference with the 70D, and the new Mark II will be even more of a difference. I previoulsy had a 60D, just wasn't that happy with it, and moving up to the 70D made a big difference.
