A decent lens that covers a lot of ground. I got this for travel and backpacking.

PROS: good image quality across the zoom range, small, light, compact, no lens creep, metal mount, 5yr warranty, manual focus override, easy 1 finger focus, low CA, and good VR system. This lens works well for just about any situation and makes a great travel lens. Not superior in any aspect, but very good in all areas.

CONS: Zoom ring is tight, perhaps to avoid lens creep. Not ideal for video, like all all-in-one lens' it has a lot of distortion on both ends. But it's easily corrected in camera and LR5. Harder to correct in video software. Also, no lens hood.

Only regret is, I didn't get it as a kit with the D7100. Below is a panning shot using the VR at 70mm 1/20 sec, ISO 100, f/27. ND filter was used. Also, a Panorama of the Strip shot from the edge town about 15 mils away at 140mm, ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/2 sec on a tripod.

This isn't a bad lens, but it's not the best lens in my kit. It's nice and light compared to most of my other lenses, and the telephoto range is hard to beat especially if you want to travel relatively light. Sharp enough, especially in the middle, fast enough and nice and bright. A little soft in the corners, some noticeable CA in certain conditions (purple fringes on bare trees against a burned-out winter sky), and loads of distortion. Some flare shooting right into the sun, but not necessarily unattractive, although it loses contrast. As of right now my D7100 doesn't correct the distortion in-camera (I'm sure there will be a firmware upgrade) but DxO Optics Pro software corrects it. The distortion doesn't bother me since it is easily correctable. Hasn't yet been calibrated by PT Lens, but the author will calibrate it if somebody sends him the images. I haven't gotten around to it yet. As part of a package deal, this lens was inexpensive, and I knew what I was looking for - a good enough lens as a casual walking-around lens. In my opinion, that's what this is. If you are looking for the best lens for your 24mp DX format camera, this isn't it, but to replicate the range with the best image quality you need a collection lenses, and much higher cost. I would not recommend this lens as your primary option for the best image quality from a 24mp camera, but I would recommend it as a convenient lens option in a kit that includes some higher quality lenses for your most important pictures. As long as you know what you are getting and you are OK with it (I am), then it's fine, especially if it is heavily discounted like mine was.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I was looking for a good, all-in-one, walk-around lens for my D7100. I have a D700 with lots of big, heavy, fast, sharp, expensive lenses, but needed a lens for the lighter D7100 when distance and conditions dictate only a single body and lens. After perhaps a hundred exposures over a range of conditions and subjects I think this is an adequate but much less than wonderful lens.

GOOD: Reasonably compact and light for its range of focal length and aperture. 18 to 140mm is very good for almost all general walk-around scenes. The vibration reduction is quite good and the on/off switch is conveniently located. Vignetting is acceptable at all focal lengths and apertures with only a single filter attached. Foreground focus(in front of the focus spot) is quite good and surprisingly deep. Construction seem substantial.

LACKING: The optics. Practically speaking, this is a 24 to 140, f/8 to f/16 lens. Most of the time you will be disappointed outside this range. The focus near the edges of all frames is very soft. This is true at all focal lengths and apertures and is awful at 18mm. There is a noticeable improvement to "almost acceptable" at 22mm and to "adequate" at 24mm. Stopping the lens down to f/8 makes a huge improvement in overall sharpness at all focal lengths. On the flip side diffraction is quite pronounced at apertures smaller than f/22 and is really only eliminated at f/16. Given the good foreground focus, I have discovered that overall focus is improved by focusing slightly beyond a centered subject. Edge softness is visibly improved by such fudging.

I recommend this lens with reservations. It's a good lens if you can live with the consumer-level optics.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Nice image quality, not too bulky (for the very useful range). Sure, there are even longer ranges available, but then you really have to start thinking about how big a lens /camera combo you really want to be carrying around. Thought about the 18-105, but that really wasn't a noticeable weight or size savings over this lens. Only real downside is this is a "plasticy" lens- not the silky smooth zoom and focus of a classic Nikor. OTOH, if it gets damaged by moisture/dust in the field, it is less expensive than some rain jackets! Distortion is corrected with one click in Lightroom.

Nice lens, quite versatile. DX crop factor make it about 27-210mm zoom. Smooth operation, crisp and sharp. Needs a bit more light than say a constant 2.8 but it's a fraction of the cost. Well worth the money.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

My first forey into digital cameras was a D80 package with two lenses: 18-55 and 55-200. Shooting nature mostly, wild animals and landscapes, I purchased a 70-300 and 10-24 lens to compliment my original setup. Unfortunately, I found myself having to carry all four lens to cover the shooting spectrum. I spent a lot of time changing lenses and exposing the camera internals to dust. The 18-140 covers ninety-five percent of my shooting needs and replaces two lenses with one. It works great and remains on the camera as my primary lens. It was worth the expense to supercede the original two lenses with my D80.

I got this lens with my Nikon D7000. Initially, I hated this lens as I wasn't able to get proper pictures. But I much later found out it was the fault in my technique, specially that I was using the Auto mode.
I am using this lens in all manual modes, now it gives much better quality. Someone mentioned it does not perform in low light, I have attached a picture taken in total dark with just a candlelight, at its low end of the maximum aperture which is f/5.6. It does a pretty good job of low light capture. The Autofocus is fast, no problems there. A versatile lens for everything.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

A great, versatile lens that I've been using for everything from Passport photos to wildlife to street photography. Going from 27mm (equiv.) to 210mm is all I need. The short throw between wide angle and telephoto is nice and the resistance is just right. The lens will not change zoom (creep) when held up or down and the wide hand grip is easy to hold. I really like the ability to manually override the focus even when Auto Focus is selected. The VR feature really does add at least 4 stops to what can be hand held at slow shutter speeds. I shot the recent lunar eclipse at 1/30th of a second, hand held, at the 210mm telephoto setting and the result was so sharp that I could see the craters on the moon. I'm very happy Nikon bundled this lens with my new D7200. They seem made for each other. I also like that at the telephoto setting the lens will still focus as close (18") as it does at the other focal lengths.

I recently bought the new Nikon D7200 with this lens 18-140. It is really awesome. I used for many different scenes: landscape, people, portrait, night time,,. It really gives me sharp images. I also used for taking long time exposure and time-lapse . It is really perfect for different kind of settings. I do recommend it to everyone.

I bought this lens to use it around for street photography, photojournalism and travel. Its not the fastest lens but its very sharp across most of the focal length. Here where I live (Puerto Rico) we have tropical weather and sunny days most of the time so light is not really an issue. I do recommend it to that student/semi-pro photographer to have it in your camera all the time. Construction is very solid typical of the Nikon brand. For me it actually balances the weight in my Nikon D7100, I'm 5'8" 150pds and it feels great even after carrying it around in strikes and the such for several hours.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I've had this lens for almost a year and have used it in many different situations including beach sunsets, landscapes, city walking, and cars. I bought it used and for the price it has served its purpose well, to capture moments. BUT I would not recommend it for much else. It is very soft, especially when zoomed in. I have noticed on several occasions it completely missed the zoom, perhaps that is my fault but it just seems to happen to often. All in all it is a good lens, but I plan on upgrading to much better soon.
