Factory-Refurbished Photo Gear

A Dollar-Wise Way to Build a Your Camera Arsenal

By Allan Weitz

There's an old chestnut about how to tell if you're ready to become a photographer. The test is simple. First, you figure out how much money you'll need for food and shelter for the next month. Once you have that figured out, drive to the nearest ATM and withdraw all remaining money from your account. Get back into your car and drive to the middle of the nearest bridge, stop the car, get out, walk over to the railing and without the slightest bit of reservation, cast your cash to the wind.

(There's a similar test for first-time boat buyers that involves doing all of the above except you add a cold, hard-driving rain into the equation and you have to throw all of your cash over the railing… including your rent and food money.)

The Used Department @ B&H Photo

Everybody loves a deal, especially in this day and age, and in an effort to ease your pain we have enhanced our Used Department's homepage with a special section for Refurbished camera gear. Refurbished cameras and lenses are among the real 'sleepers' of camera deals at B&H, and we get them on a regular basis from many manufacturers including Nikon, Canon, and Olympus. As for the history of these items, they vary. Some are samples used by sales and tech representatives; others are retired samples from tradeshows, while others might have had problems out of the box that have been corrected.

Regardless, all of these items are thoroughly gone over and tested before being re-packaged and sent to select dealers (something you can't say for sure with brand-new items). Cosmetically speaking most all of these items are in like-new condition, and come with a 90-day manufacturer's warranty. And like I said, each piece is pre-tested before heading out the door.

Dollar-wise, 'refurbs' are, depending on the product, somewhere between the price of a new item and its used counterpart minus the wear-and-tear of the used item, and using my own experiences as a guide, as safe as a new purchase.

Some of the refurbished items we have in stock as we go to press include the following;

Nikon D3 body $3699.95
($4599.95 new)

NikonD700 body $2039.95
 ($2999.95 new)

Nikon 18-135/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX $389.95 ($449.95 new)

Olympus Evolt E-520 w/14-42mm
  $229.95 ($329.95 new)

Olympus 8mm/f3.5 Fisheye ED (4/3)  $629.95 ($ 749.95 new)

Profoto CPS ComPact Special 300ws
$339.95 ($654 new)

Epson Stylus Pro 3800 (17" Wide)
$799 ($1295 new)

Other deals currently available include an Olympus Evolt E-420 body for $279.95 (discontinued) and an Olympus Evolt E-420 w/ 14-42mm for $369.95 (also discontinued).

Please note- we receive fresh inventory of refurbished products on a regular basis, and there's a good chance the items described in this article might already be sold. Out of 50 refurbished Nikon D700s we took in, about half were sold the first week, and by the time you read this they might all be gone. Then again we might also get another 50 pieces in before the well runs dry.

While most refurbished items are labeled as such, some manufacturers have marketing agreements that require us not to use the word 'refurbished' when posting these items on our site. We get around this issue by simply saying 'Call for Condition' instead of rating the item on a scale of 1-10. If in doubt, one of our customer support team members will be able to verify as to whether the product you're interested in is available as a refurbished product or not.
