Olympus has just announced the new E-P5, the fourth generation of their popular PEN series of interchangeable lens mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera bodies, which features an eye-catching, retro design that’s reminiscent of the original PEN F series from the 1960s and '70s.

Lens selection is a highly personal choice for most photographers. Client base, shooting style and cost all factor in directly when you're deciding how to build a kit intelligently. Wedding photographers need a diverse assortment, given the expectation that they must cover such a broad range of subject matter in one day’s work.

Sony has just released several updates and new models in their lines of photographic equipment. Two interchangeable-lens cameras, new lenses and Cyber-shot point-and-shoots are available. These cameras build upon Sony’s extensive history of making cameras with high imaging performance that are enjoyable to use regularly.

Fujifilm has recently released two more lenses to further round out their expanding lineup of XF lenses for use on the X series interchangeable-lens cameras. These lenses, the XF 14mm f/2.8 R and the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS, complement the existing three prime XF lenses and add more options and functionality to the entire system.

Sony has announced two new Alpha E-mount lenses for their NEX series of digital mirrorless cameras. The first is the Alpha E-mount 20mm f/2.8 prime lens which makes it, along with the 16mm f/2.8 lens, their second wide-angle prime lens for the NEX system. The other lens introduced today is the Alpha E-mount 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 PZ OSS Lens.

As the holidays approach, it’s a good time to get your game on, in terms of all those family photos you will be taking. Getting little Junior to smile and Uncle Harry to pay attention may be the most difficult aspects of creating a shareable family shot, but there are some technical elements surrounding quality holiday photography that we should discuss now.

Tamron has recently introduced a pair of new lenses, both of which are telephoto length and offer wide maximum apertures, Vibration Compensation (VC) and an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) focusing motor. These lenses are improvements over past versions due to the incorporation of new technologies that enable sharper, cleaner imagery.

Sigma has announced a new 35mm f/1.4 prime lens for DSLR cameras. A wide-angle lens with a fast maximum aperture, it’s available for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony and Sigma Autofocus mounts. With this lens, Sigma is inaugurating a new line of interchangeable lenses: the Art line.

As camera technology continues to progress, lenses also continue to evolve. With improved sensor technology and greater resolution cameras, a lens's main progression is to keep up with the amount of data and image quality that can be resolved by an image sensor and processor.

How many lenses do you really need? If you’re Henri Cartier-Bresson, one might be enough. But if you’re shooting a complex event like a wedding, you’re going to need a more generously stocked camera bag. The most important tools for any photographer are cameras and lenses. Deciding which ones are necessary requires some serious thought.

Wedding photography is obviously about the bride and groom, and their special day. While that story is told with photos of the lucky pair, and their guests, their memories of the event can be enhanced with images that might not be so obvious.

Further aligning itself with the needs of independent filmmakers, Zeiss announced at NAB two interchangeable-mount additions to its Compact Prime CP.2 family of cine primes. Joining one end of the lineup is a super-wide Distagon 15/T2.9, and complementing the other end is a Sonnar 135/T2.1 telephoto.

Filling a void in Nikon’s current autofocus FX-format lens lineup, the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G is a general wide-angle lens with a fast maximum aperture. This fixed prime lens is ideal for almost any situation, providing a 75° angle of view (on full-frame sensors) that isn’t too wide or too narrow for most applications.

Sometimes technology gets in the way of quality. For example, the finest wristwatches made today are self-winding units with jewels used as pivot points. They’re mechanical works of art assembled by hand, and you won’t find a battery or quartz crystal inside any of them.

One of the broadest categories of lenses we sell at B&H is wide and extra-wide-angle lenses. As for defining the parameters of wide and ultra wide, the safest definition of a standard wide-angle lens would be a lens with an angle of view between 62° and 84°.
