Video Accessories

The iPhone 4 is a revolutionary device that’s capable of recording impressive looking, high-definition video (especially considering that it’s a telephone). But there’s one thing that the iPhone doesn’t have an app for: providing a way to improve the sound quality of its built-in mono microphone.

Some accessories in video production and HDSLR filmmaking are so essential that they transcend being just add-on gear, and become part of the camera system itself. One such item is an on-camera monitor. Sometimes referred to as a “video-assist monitor,” they’re used to help the camera operator (or assistant) focus the camera.

Shooting video with DSLRs, or HDSLRs to be specific, is gaining popularity with photographers and filmmakers. One reason is that HDSLRs can shoot some pretty amazing video. Many photographers buy an HDSLR to shoot stills and then fall in love with the camera’s video capabilities once they discover them.

This all depends on what type of lighting system you currently own. If you are shooting with tungsten or other form of continuous lighting, you’re in the game. If you’re shooting with electronic flash, the news isn’t as good unless you plan on shooting video one frame at a time. Strobes are simply the wrong tools for capturing video.

Why pay more for quality FireWire cables now that Pearstone has rolled out a full selection of 4-, 6- and 9-pin cables in various lengths? The IEEE 1394 interface has long been favored by video and audio pros for connecting portable equipment like camcorders to computers. But misplacing a cable or not having the right cable with a 4- to 6-pin connection, for instance, can trip up anyone.

It’s impressive how news crews can descend upon a scene and broadcast live video within minutes of their arrival. This is made possible in part by the use of wireless broadcasting equipment that can put you on the air in no time.

I love collecting knives. I have a large collection of them, including some that I’ve had since I was a kid. I collected the bulk of them during the past decade or so, while satisfying my addiction to eBay. But before I bought anything on eBay, I already owned two Leatherman multitools.
