Photographers may want to remove their earphones for this one. There’s an unlikely reason to use the headphone jack on their iPad, iPod touch or iPhone. By connecting the ioShutter Shutter Release Cable between it and your Canon, Pentax or Hasselblad, among other cameras, you’ll have touch-screen control through a free downloadable app from the Apple App Store for your iOS device.
The app and cable offer multi-function control over your DSLR from up to 3 feet away. Options include shutter timers, bulb setups for long exposures and time-lapse programming. There are also two unusual controls: a ClapTo Snap sound trigger and ShakeToTake movement trigger. The 21MB ioShutter app has been available for downloading since February, but the cables it works with won’t be available from B&H until May.
Depending on the type of connector on your camera, ioShutter is offering two versions of the cable. The ioShutter Shutter Release Cable With E3 Connector is fully compatible with the Canon G10, G11, 450D, EOS Digital Rebel series; Pentax K100D; Samsung GX-10; Hasselblad H2, H4; and Contax 645 (dependent on your back).
The ioShutter Shutter Release Cable With N3 Connector is fully compatible with the Canon 5D Mark II, 5D, 7D, EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS-1Ds Mark III, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1D MARK II, EOS-1D MARK II and EOS-20D.
According to ioShutter, a number of other cameras are compatible with one of the two cables, but the company hasn’t tested them in its labs. It lists these additional models for likely compatibility with the E3 version: Canon G1X, G12, 1000D, 1100D, 600D, 100D, 550D, 500D, 400D, 350D, 300D, Kiss F, X5, X4, X3, X50, XS, Elan II/ IIE, Elan 7/7E, Rebel Ti, T1i, T2i; Pentax K5, K7, Super, D110D, Ds2, DL; Samsung GX-20, GX-1L, GX-1S, Hasselblad H1 and H3.
It lists these additional models for likely compatibility with the N3 version: Canon EOS 1D X, EOS-1D, EOS-1Ds MARK II, EOS-1Ds, EOS-1D, EOS 10D, 30D, 40D, 50D, EOS D30, D60, EOS 3 and EOS 1V.
The company says that cables for Nikon cameras will be available later in 2012.
It has also posted a Pro App version ($9.99) in the Apple App Store that contains such additional functions as being able to schedule the timer using a calendar, run time-lapse capture for days at a time and set the dB level for the sound trigger.
As for Android versions of the apps, ioShutter says it is planning to port them over from the iOS platform this year.
