Nikon has announced their latest FX-format DSLR: the D610 DSLR Camera. Using the D600 as its starting point, the D610 provides the stellar features of the D600 and brings with it a handful of upgrades that are certain to pique the interest of those looking for faster performance speeds as well as smoother, quieter operation. Along with the D610 camera body, Nikon is releasing three camera-and-lens kits: the D610 DSLR with 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens, the D610 DSLR with 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G EDVR Lens, and the D610 DSLR with 24-85mm and 70-300mm Lenses.
With a 24.3MP FX-format full-frame CMOS sensor, the D610 offers the utmost in high-resolution capture in a compact DSLR form. With a wide dynamic range and high signal-to-noise ratio, details are sharp and noise is minimal across its sensitivity range, which runs from ISO 100-6400 but is expandable from ISO 50 up to ISO 25600 when shooting in extreme situations. The large sensor provides bright, high-contrast imaging in strong light and remarkable pickup when shooting in low-light conditions. Color reproduction is accurate across the board.
Nikon’s EXPEED 3 Image Processor provides top-of-the-line performance speeds and with the D610's improved shutter mechanism, continuous shooting speed is improved over the D600 to 6 fps. The other notable advancement of the D610 is Continuous Quiet Mode, which enables the camera to silently shoot up to 3 frames without the noise of the camera’s mirror lifting and dropping. This is a great step forward for photographers in a range of disciplines who not only recognize, but absolutely need, the ability to shoot in discreet silence.
In addition to its new features, the D610 provides the same fast and precise 39-point autofocus system housed in the D600. These points fill the AF coverage area, but this advanced AF system allows you to choose from among these 39 points, depending on the shot you are after. Nine center cross-type sensors provide focus accuracy even in dim or tricky lighting, and seven center points function down to f/8 for use with long telephoto lenses, used in conjunction with teleconverters. The ability to choose between 9, 21, or the full 39 autofocus points provides compositional control of the highest order.
In regard to exposure metering, the D610 offers a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor as the main component in its Intelligent Scene Recognition System with 3D Color Matrix Metering II. Within the moment it takes to press the shutter button, the sensor evaluates brightness, contrast, distance, and color and provides not only precise, but consistently accurate image assessment and metering. An updated auto white balance system in the D610 provides improved color reproduction.
The built-in flash on the D610 is an intelligent, powerful illumination system able to light up dark scenes and automatically provide just the right amount of fill-flash. It supports Nikon’s i-TTL flash-metering system and can act as a Commander to two groups of remote flashes across three channels for intricate wireless flash control. Of course, the D610 provides a hot-shoe mount to support external flash with any Nikon Speedlight. Other advanced features include dual SD card slots, a 3.2" LCD monitor, a large optical viewfinder, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body and a highly customizable interface.
Reaching across media, or blending two into one, the D610 offers HD video capture on par with the best available. Full HD 1080p video is supported with frame rates of 30p, 25p, or 24p; MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression and HD 720p video is supported in frame rates of 60p, 50p, or 30p. Professional features in the form of fully manual exposure control, microphone and headphone inputs, and uncompressed external recording capabilities via HDMI make the D610 a great choice for those wanting broadcast-quality capture in a compact form. In addition, multi-area mode Full HD D-Movie gives you the freedom to use both FX or DX formats when shooting video, and compatibility with a huge range of DX and FX NIKKOR lenses provides unmatched versatility and image quality.
Sharing images in an instant is possible when utilizing the optional WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter. With the adapter and Nikon’s free Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility App, instant upload and transfer is simple, and you’re also able to use your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet as the camera’s remote control.
The D610 brings Nikon’s advanced photo- and video-capture systems, including the impressive new Continuous Quiet Mode, and places them in a compact, manageable form factor. And as mentioned, the D610 is available with several varieties of lens kits.
The D610 DSLR with 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens combines the D610 with a versatile wide-angle-to-short-telephoto lens, ideal for day-to-day shooting and able to satisfy most of your shooting needs. With three aspherical lens elements and one extra-low dispersion (ED) element, aberrations are minimized and overall imaging is sharp. Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating improves light transmission and reduces flare. The Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic vibrations to provide fast, smooth, and silent autofocus action, and VR image stabilization compensates for camera shake to provide sharp images even in low light. The lens’s internal focusing system keeps the lens system compact and lightweight without extending the barrel during focus, and a 7-blade diaphragm creates pleasing out-of-focus blur.
With an even wider focal length range, the D610 DSLR with 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is the choice to make. From interiors and landscapes to portraits and, of course, distant subjects magnified, this lens can do almost anything you could ask of one lens. On top of that, it is relatively compact and lightweight and can focus as close as 18”. Three aspherical elements and two ED elements offer sharpness and minimize aberrations, while SIC coating reduces reflections and provides accurate and consistent colors. Internal focusing and the Silent Wave Motor provide fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus, and VR II image stabilization controls the effects of camera shake, which is especially important at the long end of the telephoto range.
For comprehensive shooting potential, the D610 DSLR with 24-85mm and 70-300mm Lenses kit combines the above-mentioned 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens with the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR zoom lens. Providing sharp telephoto imaging with impressive features, the 70-300mm will compress space and bring distant subjects close, with impressive clarity. Internal focusing and SWM autofocus offers fast and quiet AF and Nikon’s Vibration Reduction II keeps images clear even in low light and at telephoto lengths. Two ED elements ensure high sharpness and contrast while minimizing aberrations. The two lenses together provide an imaging package that can bring forth the most from the impressive D610.
